The Study of India's Air Navigation Services, the project i was involved in appears to have caught the world's attention.

The Study which is aimed at looking at the options to corportize Air Navigation Services in India as NAVCanada seperately has the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), United States Government and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University involved to give our air route system a complete overhaul and also transition our air traffic controllers to handle more traffic in addition to implementing newer technology as Air Traffic Flow Managment, CPDLC and seed base systems that would later make 'free-flight' a reality.

With an aviation sector that's growing at 34 %, I feel proud to be part of an initiative that would make India's airspace safer and skies cleaner thanks to shorter SID and STAR's which will lower fuel burn or aircraft.

In this article published by Aviation Week and Space TEchnology in February 2008, I am quoted on this recent development.

These are the immigration lines in New Delhi, India. Were they long? This is just one. They were incredibly long. I almost thought that there were some union organizers from the U.S. who had come to India and were working with the Indian Immigration Officer's Union in an attempt to raise union membership by slowing down the work so that the government will hire more people. Sorta' like they do in the United States. Luckily, they opened up another line to the right of me and I jumped at the chance, getting to be the third person in line. Two little Jewish ladies from New York in track shoes beat me to it. I remember waiting with our driver outside of the gate for someone else going to the hotel that the driver was supposed to pick up off the same flight. The next day I met the guy for which the driver had been waiting at the hotel and he said it took him more than an hour to get through immigration.

Red-Tailed Hawk In Flight

The other day I was out back and heard a commotion in the trees about 25 yards away, it was Black Crows and I've come to know when they are acting like that there is probably a Hawk around. Sure enough this Red Tailed Hawk was sitting on a branch relaxing. After a while the Crows left which is unusual as they usually stay at the Hawk until it flies away. I grabbed my Camera and got some in the tree shots and since the hawk was facing me I figured when he flew there was a good chance he was coming my way. Three hours later here come a pair of Bluejays that began to taunt the Hawk as the crows were, it was back and forth and at times the hawk would yell back and ruffle it's feathers. Finally the hawk gave in and flew, yelling like mad, I jumped from my seat sore from sitting 3 hours and began to fire my 6fps and hope for the best. Got some decent shots, none better then this.

Red-tailed Hawks are large hawks with typical Buteo proportions: very broad, rounded wings and a short, wide tail. Large females seen from a distance might fool you into thinking you’re seeing an eagle. (Until an actual eagle comes along.)

Most Red-tailed Hawks are rich brown above and pale below, with a streaked belly and, on the wing underside, a dark bar between shoulder and wrist. The tail is usually pale below and cinnamon-red above, though in young birds it’s brown and banded. “Dark-phase” birds are all chocolate-brown with a warm red tail. “Rufous-phase” birds are reddish-brown on the chest with a dark belly.

You’ll most likely see Red-tailed Hawks soaring in wide circles high over a field. When flapping, their wingbeats are heavy. In high winds they may face into the wind and hover without flapping, eyes fixed on the ground. They attack in a slow, controlled dive with legs outstretched – much different from a falcon’s stoop.

Habitat

The Red-tailed Hawk is a bird of open country. Look for it along fields and perched on telephones poles, fenceposts, or trees standing alone or along edges of fields.

Facts:
* The Red-tailed Hawk has a thrilling, raspy scream that sounds exactly like a raptor should sound. At least, that’s what Hollywood directors seem to think. Whenever a hawk or eagle appears onscreen, no matter what species, the shrill cry on the soundtrack is almost always a Red-tailed Hawk.
* Birds are amazingly adapted for life in the air. The Red-tailed Hawk is one of the largest birds you’ll see in North America, yet even the biggest females weigh in at only about 3 pounds. A similar-sized small dog might weigh 10 times that.
* The "Harlan's Hawk" breeds in Alaska and northwestern Canada, and winters on the southern Great Plains. This very dark form of the Red-tailed Hawk has a marbled white, brown, and gray tail instead of a red one. It’s so distinctive that it was once considered a separate species, until ornithologists discovered many individuals that were intermediate between Harlan's and more typical Red-tailed Hawks.
* Courting Red-tailed Hawks put on a display in which they soar in wide circles at a great height. The male dives steeply, then shoots up again at an angle nearly as steep. After several of these swoops he approaches the female from above, extends his legs, and touches her briefly. Sometimes, the pair grab onto one other, clasp talons, and plummet in spirals toward the ground before pulling away.
* Red-tailed Hawks have been seen hunting as a pair, guarding opposite sides of the same tree to catch tree squirrels.
* The oldest known Red-tailed Hawk was 28 years 10 months old.

OK, for the ultimate, but interesting, timewaster on the web, there is Chatroulette. So one recent evening, I took Gigantor (that’s Tetsujin-28 for those of you in Japan) out on the site to see what sort of reaction I’d get from people joining in video chat to find a 4 inch high toy robot. Let’s just say he’s not the strangest thing to be seen on the site! This image is a sampling of some of those images (Gigantor is “You” in the center—that’s what they saw from me)….

Today's picture had a topical slant to it.
This morning's copy of the Metro newspaper had an advertisement for cheap holidays in Tunisia. As soon as I got into work, news of the unrest, called the 'Jasmine Revolution' by some, had dominated all sources. By midday, the Government had advised against 'all but essential travel' and British citizens were being evacuated from the country, with all flights in being cancelled until further notice.
I saved the newspaper until my return home and switched the TV to a news channel showing the latest pictures of the unrest. After all, who can resist a luxury holiday in a danger zone?

Private Cecil Rahn (In Their Footsteps)

This is my Grandfather and he was part of the 'Carmichael's thousand".

In the history books a Captain Ambrose Carmichael MC of the 36 Battalion AIF raised 1000 recruits for the AIF in 1915.
My Grandfather was apparently underage when he tried to join the A.I.F so he went to the gym to bulk up and joined the Leichhardt Rifle Club this then enabled him to join the A.I.F but records say he was 18 years 4 months at time of enlistment.

There was fierce fighting in the trenches in Bullecourt, France 1917. While in the trench a german grenade landed between him and two of his Australian mates. He promptly picked up the grenade and threw it out of the trench saving his mates but in the process was wounded with shrapnel to his face and eyes as the grenade exploded mid flight.
Was reported to have been admitted to Bethnal Green Military Hospital, London 15 May 1917 suffering from a Gunshot wound to his right leg, arm, face and ankle. Later transferred to Harefield Australian Hospital (Ward 3).
He spent over 2 years in Hospital before returning home to Sydney on T.S.S Ulysses.

When I was 9 years of age when pop said to mum but directed to my brother and I "Never let the boys go to war"

These words he said are memories of my grandfather which have always stayed with me.

The Second Battle of Bullecourt, fought between 3 and 15 May 1917, was a continuation of the British 1917 spring offensive north and south of Arras. The aim of these operations was to support a major attack further south by the French under General Robert Nivelle. As the British had at the opening of the Somme in 1916, Nivelle sought a breakthrough of the German lines followed by swift defeat of the enemy on French soil. The French attacked on 15 April 1917 but failed. However, both British and French leaders agreed to continue operations, one of which was a combined British and Australian attack on the Hindenburg Line around Bullecourt where the previous attempt to capture and hold sections of the German line had failed so disastrously on 11 April 1917.

The Australian infantry of the Second Division advanced east of Bullecourt village at 3.45 am on 3 May 1917. The left flank, close to Bullecourt, was pinned in the wire but the right and centre, partly sheltered by a half-sunken road, seized and cleared the first two lines of enemy trench. These Australians now advanced towards their second objective, the railway embankment near Riencourt village. Other Australians, further right, were stopped entering the Hindenburg Line trenches by deadly machine-gun fire at the wire entanglements. British forces also failed in their attempt to take Bullecourt itself though some troops seized part of the Hindenburg Line west of the village.

The Australians who had managed to get into the Hindenburg Line now seemed to be in untenable positions which projected out on a narrow front and were being attacked on both flanks. But they held on. Part of the Australian objective was captured after furious grenade battles in which trenches changed hands several times. The men in more isolated positions, however, were forced back. The half-sunken road provided some shelter between the old front line and the captured trenches, allowing reinforcements and vitally needed supplies to come forward. At dusk on 3 May, the Second Australian Division held most of its first objective.

On 3 May, only the Canadians in the north and the Australians in the south made any progress. On 4 May the French troops were unfit for their planned offensive but the British pushed on.

The Australians extended their narrow foothold in the Hindenburg Line until it was like a mushroom on its stalk, with the head deep in enemy territory connected by a single long communication track. At dawn on 6 May, after 18 hours of bombardment, the Germans launched their sixth general counter-attack. The Germans had almost reached the central road when Corporal George Julian Howell made an astonishing run along the top of the trenches bombarding the enemy with hand grenades as he ran. This, and the stubborn support of other Australians, caused the Germans to move back farther than their starting point. Howell survived to receive the Victoria Cross in person from King George V.

A full duration test, while remaining clamped to the launch pad is possible because SpaceX uses a hold-before-release system — a capability required by commercial airplanes but rarely implemented on launch vehicles. (photo from today below)

After the first stage engine ignites, the Falcon 9 is held down and not released for flight until all propulsion and vehicle systems are confirmed to be operating nominally.

This week’s launch will be the first attempt by a commercial company to recover a spacecraft reentering from low-Earth orbit. It is a feat performed by only six governmental agencies so far: the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, India, and the European Space Agency.

IDF delegation to Haiti landed this morning in Israel in a special flight from the capital city Port-au-Prince.
The delegation commander thanked personally the pilots that landed at the airport in the city against all odds.

I'm not really sure why this particular piece is called a yoke, but that is what "yugo" translates to, and that is what this was called.

These were put in burials, but I don't know how they were associated with the body, whether put on or next to it.

This piece was made in the Classic Period around 100 - 800 years ago. It was made by artists of the period who came from the Central Gulf Coast of Veracruz. The creation of this piece is unique, as there are no others like it among the Mesoamerican cultures. However, some of the cultures along the Gulf Coast tried to copy these yokes.

The yokes were of great importance, both for its beauty and the extraordinary manner in which the stone was made to represent relationships with certain religious concepts associated with life. Since the yokes were placed in the burials with the bodies in order to protect them.

The yokes have representations at its center and outside, sometimes inside, and also at the two ends of each side that represent part of the body, either: the head, mouth, legs, and arms of people and certain animals. The outer center portion is commonly represented with the open mouth of a frog or a tiger with a human head placed inside. There are also human heads at the end of each of the limbs of the yoke.

Other smaller yokes are closed and have a different type of animal, such as an owl, a night bird, which is associated with the dark and death.

os Angeles, Thursday, June 6--Senator Robert F. Kennedy,
the brother of a murdered President, died at 1:44 A.M. today of an
assassin's shots.

The New York Senator was
wounded more than 20 hours earlier, moments after he had made his
victory statement in the California primary.

At his side when he died
today in Good Samaritan Hospital were his wife Ethel; his sisters, Mrs.
Stephen Smith and Mrs. Patricia Lawford; his bother-in-law, Stephen
Smith; and his sister-in-law, Mrs. John F. Kennedy, whose husband was
assassinated 4 1/2 years ago in Dallas.

In Washington, President
Johnson issued a statement calling the death a tragedy. He proclaimed
next Sunday a national day of mourning.

The Final Report

Hopes had risen slightly when
more than eight hours went by without a new medical bulletin on the
stricken Senator, but the grimness of the final announcement was
signaled when Frank Mankiewicz, Mr. Kennedy's press secretary, walked
slowly down the street in front of the hospital toward the littered
gymnasium that served as press headquarters.

Mr. Mankiewicz bit his lip.
His shoulders slumped.

He stepped to a lectern in
front of a green-tinted chalkboard and bowed his head for a moment
while the television lights snapped on.

Then, at one minute before 2
A.M., he told of the death of Mr. Kennedy.

Following is the text of the
statement from Mr. Mankiewicz:

"I have a short announcement
to read which I will read at this time. Senator Robert Francis Kennedy
died at 1:44 A.M. today, June 6, 1968. With Senator Kennedy at the time
of his death was his wife, Ethel; his sisters, Mrs. Patricia Lawford
and Mrs. Stephen Smith, his brother-in-law, Stephen Smith and his
sister-in-law, Mrs. John F. Kennedy.

"He was 42 years old."

Senator Kennedy's body will
be taken to New York this morning and then to Washington.

The man accused of shooting
Mr. Kennedy early yesterday in a pantry of the Ambassador Hotel was
identified as Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, 24 years old, who was born in
Palestinian Jerusalem of Arab parentage and had lived in the Los
Angeles area since 1957. Sirhan had been a clerk.

$250,000 Bail

Yesterday, he was hurried
through an early-morning court arraignment and held in lieu of $250,000
bail.

Sirhan was charged with six
counts of assault with intent to murder, an offense involving a prison
term of 1 to 14 years.

Five other persons in
addition to the 42-year-old Senator were wounded by the eight bullets
from a .22-caliber revolver fired at almost point-blank range into a
throng of Democratic rally celebrants surging between ballrooms in the
hotel. The shots came moments after Senator Kennedy had made a speech
celebrating his victory in yesterday's Democratic Presidential primary
in California.

The defendant, seized moments
after the shooting, refused to give the police any information about
himself. He was arraigned as "John Doe."

Three hours later, Mayor
Samuel W. Yorty announced at a news conference at police headquarters
that the defendant had been identified as Sirhan. He said the identity
had been confirmed by Sirhan's brother and a second individual.

Senator Kennedy, accompanied
by his wife, Ethel, was wheeled into the Good Samaritan Hospital
shortly after 1 A.M. yesterday after a brief stop at the Central
Receiving Hospital. A score of the Senator's campaign aides swarmed
around the scene.

Less than five years back
many of them had experienced the similar tragedy that ended the life of
President John F. Kennedy.

The birth of a movement? I will steal this line from a local Glasgow newspaper that was reporting on the upcoming show Rudimentary Perfection. I know this is and will be a controversial subject, and also one that will be debated for some time to come. Not only will it be debated by the artists involved in the show, but also those observers of our culture and art. Before I get into all the great and amazing times and people that were involved in the show, I would like to address the issue of Graffuturism as a movement. I know this is a long post but it is important for me to make all these points as clear as possible before moving on.

Graffuturism is a blog, yet it is also something more than that. I am an artist first utilizing the tool of a blog. I am not a blogger documenting art. I have my biases, and I don’t always act as an observer. I interact with the documentation at times. I think this point needs to be understood first in order to give some perspective on the site. Is Graffuturism a movement, is it a style, does it represent abstract graffiti, does it have an agenda as a whole? Yes, and No. The duality of postmodernism has taught us this. There are no right answers only actions that need to be taken first. Actions in my opinion are the only things that deserve any merit when talking about this subject. Actions are what brought this blog into existence. Actions are what brought 10 artists from around the world to Glasgow without any major sponsorship. Organic is a word that comes to mind. When I am asked about Graffuturism’s relevancy as a movement I myself never know what I will answer. It depends upon the day I am asked I guess. Today I will say not yet, but we definitely have a direction now. Graffuturism is definitely a direction. How far it travels is up to the artists and the observers that will attempt to understand and define it. If anything else I hope it is the start of a dialogue about graffiti’s evolution as an art form amongst artists and its followers. I only hope that those that have the ability to articulate and understand what we are doing step up and join this dialogue sooner, rather than later. Without proper discourse, critique, and documentation, movement or not it will lose its direction and be swallowed by larger entities like Pop Art, Pop Surrealism, and Street Art.

Post-Graffiti, Post Pop Art, Graffiti Art, Style Writing,Gothic Futurism, Urban Art, Graffiti, Street Art etc. etc. These are the labels that someone has already posted on the artists involved in the show, and most of the artists that are our peers. The problem with this is that besides Gothic Futurism not one artist or group of artists have defined their own identity. When I started this blog there never was an intention to define anything, only loosely relate certain aesthetics and ideas together. Graffuturism might be a blog in internet terminology, but in my eyes it is so much more. When Mark Lyken first came to me and asked me to be part of the show Rudimentary Perfection, I was excited. When he explained to me the intention of the show would loosely be based off the idea of graffuturism and some of the artists that it showcased. I was on board. Personally I had already felt Graffuturism was defining itself organically, and the idea of a certain type of art had already taken place in my mind. Behind the scenes I have had numerous daily talks with our cultures legendary artists, and contemporary artists. We are continually discussing what is taking place in today’s art scene, and our culture’s role in it. We are grossly misrepresented, and a lot of that fault lies within ourselves. So when Mark asked me about the idea I saw it as an opportunity. I felt it was a natural progression for me to correlate the two, Graffuturism as a starting point.

This brings us to the Rudimentary Perfection show, which was not curated by myself or the blog. It was curated and put together by Mark Lyken and Recoat Gallery. I had featured Recoat Gallery shows on the site in the past, and I had known of Mark’s work for some time. What was most important to me was that Mark understood and honestly embraced what was happening with the site, and its artists. Being that the show would be taking place in Glasgow, and that Recoat Gallery would be the first gallery to attempt to pull together the idea of this show. This made it that much more special. After arriving in Glasgow and being able to take in the city and its people, I was excited that this would be the place that we would make history. The show regardless of the label you want to place on it. The roster of artists was impressive. To think that all 10 artists would be able to be in the same city painting side by side drinking and talking together. I knew then that this was going to be something monumental. The ironic part, and to myself the best part of the whole experience was that this was not happening in New York, London, Paris or taking place at some major Art Gallery. Th

Concorde Close Encounter

Circa 1987 and taken with my Nikon F301 SLR - scanned in 2010.

One of the 7 famous British Airways operated Concordes which paid Exeter Airport a series of visits virtually every year from 1986 up until it ceased flying in October 2003. 'Special Flights' were laid on allowing 'ordinary' 'Joe Public' the chance to fly on this amazing aircraft - either on a hour and 30 minute 'MACH 2' dash around the Bay of Biscay; or a 30 minute sub-sonic flight either to; or from London Heathrow. Naturally, there was a price difference, but only a fraction of the approx ?5000 ticket price for a business person crossing between London and new York.

A number of UK regional airports hosted Concorde during the summer months for these flights and they proved very popular, drawing huge crowds of spectators to see it, as can be seen in the shot above.

This is a sight that definitely would not be allowed under the very strict and enhanced Security requirements of present day airports. Note the very close proximity of the crowd line, and some of the individuals virtually on th edge of the taxiway. Although using a zoom lens, I was still only a few yards away from the edge of the taxiway myself. Even though I had ear defenders on, the noise was incredible.

Seen on a dull Summer's day taxying along the then 'Western Taxiway' (Taxiway A(lpha) now) towards the Apron on it's second ever visit in 1987. On this occasion it night-stopped.

Train Chartering - The Puget Sound private rail car dome lounge plan

Train Chartering's Private Rail Cars offers the Puget Sound for charter / hire.
By day, the Puget Sound accommodates up to 16; by night, there is onboard sleeping space for eight adults. The car has two large drawing rooms each with sleeping space for two (or two adults and one child). Two smaller sitting room compartments offer sleeping space for two people each. All rooms feature private enclosed toilet/shower, TV/DVD players, and an electronic porter calling system.
Up a short flight of stairs is the climate-controlled dome/lounge with two large and two small tables, four swivel captain’s chairs, and wet bar. The galley is equipped to facilitate preparation of meals and snacks.

Europa Cup Final, Dublin Airport

To cater for the thousands of travelling supporters for the Europa Cup final, the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) made special arrangements for the parking of visiting aircraft for the day.

Seen here are just some of the supporters specially chartered aircraft lined up on Dublins disused runway 11/29 while the passengers enjoy the game at the "Dublin Arena"
