Helicopter Flights

helicopter flights

    helicopter
  • A helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by one or more engine driven rotors. In contrast with fixed-wing aircraft, this allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forwards, backwards and laterally.

  • an aircraft without wings that obtains its lift from the rotation of overhead blades

  • A type of aircraft that derives both lift and propulsion from one or two sets of horizontally revolving overhead rotors. It is capable of moving vertically and horizontally, the direction of motion being controlled by the pitch of the rotor blades

  • HElicopTEr is the ninth studio album by the post-industrial electronic band Download. HElicopTEr strays away the group's two previous albums FiXer and Effector in that it is less ambient and more experimental.

    flights
  • (flight) an instance of traveling by air; "flying was still an exciting adventure for him"

  • Shoot (wildfowl) in flight

  • (in soccer, cricket, etc.) Deliver (a ball) with well-judged trajectory and pace

  • (flight) shoot a bird in flight

  • (flight) fly in a flock; "flighting wild geese"

Flight Theory and Aerodynamics: A Practical Guide for Operational Safety, 2nd Edition

Flight Theory and Aerodynamics: A Practical Guide for Operational Safety, 2nd Edition

The classic text for pilots on flight theory and aerodynamics now in an updated Second Edition

Flight Theory and Aerodynamics, the basic aeronautics text used by the United States Air Force in their Flying Safety Officer course, is the book that brings the science of flight into the cockpit. Designed for the student with little engineering or mathematical background, the book outlines the basic principles of aerodynamics and physics, using only a minimal amount of high school level algebra and trigonometry necessary to illustrate key concepts.

This expanded seventeen chapter Second Edition reflects the cutting edge of aeronautic theory and practice, and has been revised, reorganized, and updated with 30% new information including a new chapter on helicopter flight. Central to the book s structure is a clear description of aeronautic basics what lifts and drives an aircraft, and what forces work for and against it all detailed in the context of the design and analysis of today s aircraft systems:
* Atmosphere and airspeed measurement
* Airfoils and aerodynamic forces
* Lift and drag
* Jet aircraft basic and applied performance
* Prop aircraft basic and applied performance
* Slow and high-speed flight
* Takeoff, landing, and maneuvering performance

The book s practical, self-study format includes problems at the end of each chapter, with answers at the back of the book, as well as chapter-end summaries of symbols and equations. An ideal text for the USN Aviation Safety Officer and the USAAA s Aviation Safety Officer courses, as well as for professional pilots, student pilots, and flying safety personnel, Flight Theory and Aerodynamics is a complete and accessible guide to the subject, updated for the new millennium.

Sunset Over Helicopter Island

Sunset Over Helicopter Island

The island in the background is where I completed Rescue Dive training.

(Dilumacad Island)
This island has a beautiful white sand beach stretching to some 300 meters that is ideal for picnic lunches. There is an underwater tunnel at its northern side and a fringing reef on its southern end. The island is called Helicopter Island because its limestone cliffs resemble that of a helicopter when it is viewed from a considerable distance.

Black Hawk: The Story of a World Class Helicopter (Library of Flight Series)

"This story tells, in clear detail, how Sikorsky Aircraft developed, tested, modified, and produced one of the most successful helicopters in the world. Written by the man considered to be the father of the Black Hawk, Ray Leoni explains how Sikorsky used innovative designs with the right advanced technologies to meet the ArmyAs stringent specifications for aircraft performance, survivability and reliability. With its creative Black Hawk design, Sikorsky won an uphill, highly-contested battle for one of the worldAs largest helicopter programs which reestablished the company as a leader in the world community of helicopter producers. Black Hawk variants have been put in service by every branch of the US Military and by over 24 countries around the world accumulating over 5 million flight hours. Through its combat service in the campaigns of Granada, Panama, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq, the Black Hawk has demonstrated unprecedented mission versatility and survivability and proven itself to be an outstanding war-fighting machine that will serve for a half century or longer. In the best tradition and vision of Igor Sikorsky, Black Hawks are performing world-wide rescue and humanitarian missions saving countless lives and providing relief from natural and manmade disasters to thousands of people across the globe.

The Army program began in 1972 with the issuance of Requests for Proposals for the Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System to the U.S. helicopter industry. Both Boeing Vertol and Sikorsky were awarded contracts to design and build prototype Black Hawks for Army side-by-side evaluation. Those awards set off an intense 4-year competition between the two companies that culminated in the final production selection in 1976. That competition focused on developing the best possible helicopter to offer for production selection by the Army following a 7-month fly off evaluation. During this critical evaluation, a night-time crash occurred of one of SikorskyAs three prototypes with 14 Army personnel aboard. This book shows the cause and results of that crash and describes how its consequences actually strengthened SikorskyAs competitive position. It also describes in considerable technical detail the problems encountered by Sikorsky during prototype development in vibration, speed performance, maneuverability and handling qualities and how they were solved in time for the production award. Many of the key people responsible for the success of the Black Hawk program are identified throughout this book.

Readers will benefit from the unique insights into the challenges of helicopter development as well as successful management strategies presented in this book."
