  • An airline ticket is a document, created by an airline or a travel agency, to confirm that an individual has purchased a seat on a flight on an aircraft. This document is then used to obtain a boarding pass, at the airport.

Lukla, Nepal

Lukla, Nepal

Lukla is a town in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal where most people visiting the Himalayas near Mount Everest start their journey. Lukla, at 2,860 metres (9,380 ft.), contains a small airport where most people begin and end their adventure in the region. Although Lukla means place with many goats and sheep, one is not likely to see many roaming around these days.

Looking across the township of Lukla, with the air strip of Lukla Airport in the foreground.Somewhere between 90-95% of the foreign nationals who reach Lukla will arrive by a ? hour flight from Kathmandu. The remainder will mainly trek in from Jiri, about a seven to eight day walk. On organized treks, most of the Nepalese guides and kitchen staff will also walk from Jiri to Lukla, albeit in about half the time unless clients are also with them. When Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary made the famous first ascent of Mt. Everest in 1953, that expedition also walked in from Jiri.

Lukla has a variety of shops and lodges where one can have basic western style meals and pick up any last minute items for the trekking or climbing ahead. If one cannot find required items in Lukla, better luck can be had in Namche Bazaar. There are a couple of good climbing shops (e.g. Mountain Madness) in Namche where one can rent carabiners, helmets, ice axes, jumars and harnesses. However, plastic mountaineering boots and crampons are best rented in Kathmandu if they are needed.

From Lukla, most trekking groups will take two days to reach Namche Bazaar, a nice easy pace to help in altitude acclimatization. Distance wise, this segment is doable in one long day (~8 to 10 hours) but not advised due to increased risk of altitude sickness. If not in a formal trekking group, one should double-check tickets with the airline before leaving Lukla. Empty seats on flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are a rarity during the prime seasons and people being bumped off their flights is not uncommon.

Snacks on board IT-152/30sep'07

A fairly wet cake which should have been heavy but was light; cheese balls which should have been light but were very heavy since they were soaked in something and pau-bhajee with paneer tikka on the side. The catering guys got the colours all wrong, too much brown, actually everything brown. They got the contents all wrong, too, this was the kind of food I got on the old Alliance Air flight from Delhi to Pune in the good old days when there was nobody else on this route.

Another thing - the juice from the paneer tikka leaked from below the bhaje container into the teeny weeny bread roll, which then dripped on to my shirt. I expected to pop a dry piece of bread in my mouth, what emerged was a very wet crumb which disintegrated on realising it was going in.

This is where I miss the cloth napkin from 9W. With Jet Airways, the napkin is free, but the ticket costs a lot more. Should I pilfer a few napkins from 9W and wear them on IT till they get the message, you think?

I just chose the airline I will use til I have a collection of napkins with buttonholes in them for use on all flights. I certainly like to eat my food with abandon, stopped wearing ties for that reason, and enjoy dribbling on to napkins. I challenge anybody to dribble on to a small square of tissue paper, though.

I was lucky that I stuffed myself in the Kingfisher Lounge before departure, and burped as well as dozed my way through to Pune.

It was from here that Intrepid launched the propeller-driven planes which helped to defeat Japan, the jets which supported US ground forces in Vietnam, and the helicopters which recovered NASA astronauts in the 1960s. It was here that Japanese Kamikaze suicide planes hit, exacting their terrible toll upon Intrepid’s crew. Aircraft were launched from two catapults located at the bow (front) of the ship and were recovered at the aft (rear) where their tail-hooks caught on cables laid across the deck. Intrepid’s anti-aircraft defenses were located in “gun tubs” positioned along the edge of the flight deck. Today, the flight deck holds the majority of the Intrepid’s aircraft collection, including several aircraft such as the A-6F Intruder and the FJ-3 Fury which once actually flew off of Intrepid as part of her air group.

Cloudy Skies

This shot pretty much summarizes the weather for our entire honeymoon, only from a different angle/perspective from the flight into Costa Rica. Lots of clouds with intermittent light.

We were told by a guide on our first full day in Costa Rica that the week we were there had been declared the first official week of the rainy season. This had its pros and cons. On the one hand, we had to contend with rain potentially dampening every activity we had planned (all were outdoors/adventure type things). On the other, the prices for for lodging and such were much cheaper and there were fewer tourists, which was nice.

After making a quick stop in Puerto Jimenez, we took off for the 10 minute flight to Golfito. Only Charlotte, Adam, Roberta and I were left on the plane. Oh, did I forget the flight crew.... In the foreground you can see the American Zone, old United Fruit Company houses. To the left is El Deposito, the place where Costa Ricans can get cheaper imported goods and straight ahead is the tarmac. Planes used to approach from the north, twisting and turning through jungle valleys. Guess they've become conservative....

A Europe of the Air?: The Airline Industry and European Integration (Governance in Europe Series)

A Europe of the Air?: The Airline Industry and European Integration (Governance in Europe Series)

This definitive book offers the first full study of the development of the European Union's air-transport policy. Crucial to both globalization and regional integration, commercial aviation, along with other transport industries, provides the logistics for business activities, political life, and contact between cultures. Paradoxically, however, the airline industry was one of the last to be liberalized in the process of European integration, and the creation of a single market in air transport was attended by sharp political disputes, unreconstructed nationalism, and persistent foot-dragging. Exploring the long struggle to create a 'Europe of the air' through both regulatory change and airline strategizing, Martin Staniland examines the political bargains that have shaped a highly fragmented industry and its regulation. He argues that, rather than focusing on directives and regulations issuing from Brussels, students of integration should examine the ways in which the contentious interaction between leaders of an industry and relevant politicians and officials creates distinctive 'market orders.' Such market orders enable firms to minimize the risks inherent in business, while allowing regulators to pursue the mandates of their organizations and to realize their notions of public interest. Economic integration is therefore an often-painful struggle to create a market order defined both by regulatory jurisdiction and by competition among firms. An invaluable case-study in industrial policy, this book will be essential reading for students of aviation, as well as for scholars interested in regulatory change and European integration.

Globalization and Regional Integration: The origins, development and impact of the single European aviation market (Routledge Studies in the Modern World Economy)

How was the European airline industry transformed from national fragmentation in 1957 to a point in 2006 where the European Commission could negotiate with the US for an Open Aviation Area on behalf of all twenty five members of the European Union? What can explain the change in mindset that saw conservatism and the tight regulation of the airline industry replaced with increased competitiveness and the subsequent rise of the low cost no-frills airline? In his new book, Alan P. Dobson draws from a mass of European documentation, including interviews with officials and airline executives and a unique collection of personal papers, to answer these questions.
Dobson traces the liberalization of the airline industry from the 1970s right through to the present day, illustrating how integration came about and which forces were driving it. The approach is comprehensive, focusing on the work of the Commission, market forces, the voices of airline industry interests and on key individuals in the policy making process. The story concludes with an overview of the attempts by the EU and the US to create an Open Aviation Area that would embrace their respective airline industries allowing free operation of services throughout their territories and mutual ownership and control of each others airlines.
This book is a key resource for students and researchers interested in aviation and international policy, as well as academics engaged with European integration, globalism and economic history.

Europe - Roumanie Romania România Románia

Europe - Roumanie Romania România Románia

Romania (pronounced /ro??me?ni?/ roe-MAY-nee-?; dated: Rumania; Romanian: Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe, north of the Balkan Peninsula, on the Lower Danube, within and outside the Carpathian arch, bordering on the Black Sea.Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south.

At 238,391 square kilometers (92,043 sq mi), Romania is the ninth largest country of the European Union by area, and has the seventh largest population of the European Union with 21.5 million people. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest (Romanian: Bucuresti, the sixth largest city in the EU with about two million people.

The Kingdom of Romania emerged when the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia were united under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza in 1859 under the Hohenzollern monarchy. The independence from the Ottoman Empire was declared on May 9, 1877, and was internationally recognized the following year. At the end of the World War I, Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia united with the Kingdom of Romania. Greater Romania emerged into an era of progression and prosperity that would continue until World War II. By the end of the War, many north-eastern areas of Romania's territories were occupied by the Soviet Union, and Romania became a socialist republic and member of the Warsaw Pact.

With the fall of the Iron Curtain and the 1989 Revolution, Romania started a series of political and economic reforms. After a decade of post-revolution economic problems, Romania made economic reforms and joined the European Union on January 1, 2007. Romania is now an upper-middle income country with high human development, although within the European Union, Romania's income level remains one of the lowest.

Romania also joined NATO on March 29, 2004, and is also a member of the Latin Union, of the Francophonie, of the OSCE and of the United Nations, as well as an associate member of the CPLP. Today, Romania is a unitary parliamentary republic.

Water.
The water deficit from the beginning of january is around 500 liters pro square meter in Europe. That's to say, half a meter water ! The worst dryness since centuries.
The last and very seldom atlantic stream has brough 5-6 cm water. Doubtless a good thing, but it should continue so, for weeks to compensate the deficit.

Wekusta: Luftwaffe Weather Reconnaissance Units in World War Two

This book lifts the curtain on a largely unknown or forgotten World War II activity involving highly educated German atmospheric scientists and pilots in the so-called Wetter-Erkundungs Staffeln (Wekusta - Meteorological Reconnaissance Squadrons). The two authors - one, Franz Selinger, a well-known German writer and aerospace engineer, the other, John Kington, a highly competent British writer and meteorologist - are uniquely qualified to describe this important story as seen from both sides of the warring countries. In doing so they make a remarkable contribution to the history of aviation and meteorology, but also - and that is perhaps their main concern - to the sacrifices and accomplishments of the young scientists and pilots involved in these daring and dangerous missions.

At the height of the war the Wekustas included about a dozen individual squadrons, totalling several hundred aircraft and over 1,000 flight crews. Encounters with enemy aircraft were frequent and of an erratic nature, ranging from generous life-saving efforts to attacks on downed crew members. After the secret 'Zenit' code of the German aircraft reports was broken by British intelligence, the RAF sometimes let German weather aircraft pass without attack because their radio messages were considered more valuable than shooting down the reporting aircraft.

The authors have gone to the admirable effort to list almost 1,000 names of flight crew members and their assignments. In this way they honour their memory, their courage, and their contributions to atmospheric sciences.

The book fills a long-existing gap in the history of atmospheric science and military aviation. Above all, it makes fascinating reading.

Trip Day 2: Where we got to Dublin, got lost, and went to church

Trip Day 2: Where we got to Dublin, got lost, and went to church

(I've said it before, I'll say it again. I am constantly amazed at the picture quality of my cameraphone. That alone was worth what I paid for it.) :-)

Our flight from Philly to Dublin actually got in early due to some gnarly tailwinds (which also gave us some crazy turbulence... but I'm weird enough to enjoy that!) We got to the airport and proceeded to wait long enough for our bags that I was starting to panic that they'd never made it out of Philadelphia. They were the last ones off the conveyor belt... better late than never!

Then it was time to figure out how to find a bus to our hotel. Bus maps are oddly hard to come by, and after a couple of false starts, we got headed toward city center, where we'd catch another bus to closer m the hotel. Again, this proved easier said than done, and we may have gotten lost, or at least misdirected, at least once. Maybe twice. We were off the plane at about 8, had our luggage and were through customs by around 9, and finally got to the level at... 11:30. Ugh. Did I mention it was raining the entire time we wandered around lost, er, exploring? It is Ireland, after all, and I suppose to get the full experience one needs to wander in the rain lugging a large backpack. At least that's what John and I kept trying to convince ourselves.

We got to the hotel damp and exhausted, only to discover that check-in was at 1, not 12. Thankfully, they let us leave our bags there, so we did, I grabbed my camera bag, and we headed down the street to check out a church we'd passed on the way in. We got there about ten minutes after mass had begun, so we snuck down a side aisle and grabbed a seat. The church, St. Peter's (Catholic, of course -- did this really need to be specified?), is built in the nineteenth century Gothic revival style. It's absolutely
gorgeous, and it was a total treat to catch a service there! Sometime while we were there, John suggested that we try to catch a church service in every country we're in -- I think that's a great idea. :-)

After the service ended, we wandered around the church a bit before heading back to our hotel. Our room wasn't ready yet, so we hung out and dozed in some comfy chairs. I have to say, for €29/night, this is a REALLY nice place. We even get our own bathroom! Oh the luxury. :-) So we're going to enjoy it while we can, since I know we've got plenty of hostels in our future over the next two months. Not that I'm complaining -- honest. :-)

Ok, time for a bit of a nap... neither of us slept much on the plane, and jet lag is kicking in.

PENGUINS IN DUBLIN ZOO

PENGUINS IN DUBLIN ZOO

Penguins are superbly adapted to an aquatic life. Their wings have become flippers, useless for flight in the air. In the water, however, penguins are astonishingly agile. Within the smooth plumage a layer of air is preserved, ensuring buoyancy. The air layer also helps insulate the birds in cold waters. On land, penguins use their tails and wings to maintain balance for their upright stance.

All penguins are countershaded - that is, they have a white underside and a dark (mostly black) upperside. This is for camouflage. A predator looking up from below (such as an orca or a leopard seal) has difficulty distinguishing between a white penguin belly and the reflective water surface. The dark plumage on their backs camouflages them from above.

Diving penguins reach 6 to 12 km/h (3.7 to 7.5 mph), though there are reports of velocities of 27 km/h (17 mph) (which are more realistic in the case of startled flight). The small penguins do not usually dive deep; they catch their prey near the surface in dives that normally last only one or two minutes. Larger penguins can dive deep in case of need. Dives of the large Emperor Penguin have been recorded which reach a depth of 565 m (1870 ft) and last up to 20 minutes.

Penguins either waddle on their feet or slide on their bellies across the snow, a movement called "tobogganing", which allows them to conserve energy and move relatively fast at the same time.

Penguins have an excellent sense of hearing. Their eyes are adapted for underwater vision, and are their primary means of locating prey and avoiding predators; in air, conversely, they are nearsighted. Their sense of smell has not been researched so far.

They are able to drink salt water safely because their supraorbital gland filters excess salt from the bloodstream. [1][2][3] The salt is excreted in a concentrated fluid from the nasal passages.

Robert Aldrich's tense, 1965 drama about a plane crash in the Sahara is a unique psychological study of men in desperate circumstances. In this somewhat revisionist view of classic heroism, every character within the mixed lot is stretched to his limit, and individual efforts to brave the elements and hostile nomads are duly punished. What is left is collective will and ingenuity. One could call this an allegory for transcending Cold War madness, perhaps, but Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly) makes this such a gritty, immediate experience that you can feel the desert sand in your teeth. Superb performances by James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Hardy Kruger, Peter Finch, and the rest. --Tom Keogh

My Project 365 #40: "Dad's Flight Log"

My Project 365 #40:

Today is February 9th (a significant date in aviation history). The Boeing 727 made it's first flight in 1963 and the Boeing 747 made hers on this date in 1969. As that was happening my dad was aboard a Continental Airlines 707 training as a Director of Passenger Service.

A DPS was a member of management on board Continental flights. They could get passengers a hotel room, a rental car, call ahead to help make a tight connection or rewrite a ticket for a Continental flight and steal them away from another airline.

This position is long gone but because my dad had this job (and others) with Continental, I've been in love with aviation from the time I saw my first airplane.

Today's photo is from my dad's flight log of 2.9.1969. I wasn't here yet, but when he tells me stories about these flights and his years with Continental, it's like was there.

Thanks, Dad!

My flight to Arizona was wonderful. The first part from Norfolk to Atlanta was delayed and then we had to sit on the plane to allow for a deceased soldier and his chaperon to get off of the plane first and my layover in Atlanta wasn't that long to begin with. So, I had to haul ass from my gate to the boarding gate, which luckily was in the same terminal. So I got off of one plane and then jumped right on another without too much time to spare. And I did it. All high and stuff. Proving that I can do it. If only to myself.

Athens Airport

Believe or not... our flights for Istanbul - Athens - Santorini were all delayed.

First it was Istanbul - Athens on Olympic Airlines. The plane was on the tarmac for ages before the pilot announced that they need to go back to the terminal to refuel... which means by the time we reach Athens, we were two hours late and completely missed the Aegean flight to Santorini.

As luck would have it, the next flight available to Santorini on Aegean was the next day, and we had no choice but to fork out another EUR100+ for another Olympic Airlines flight which was the same night, six hour later...

... only that this Athens - Santorini flight that night was also delayed for two hours. Like, WTF right? So by the time we eventually touched down at Santorini, it was close to midnight. One whole day wasted.

I am not happy, Olympic Airlines!

I booked the hotel room from the internet and was very happy with the condition and the location of the hotel. I have a room with the view to the Aegean Sea and it just 2 minutes away to view the legendary Caldera View and the Volcano Island.

Santorini gives good impression and I hope I can explore more.

(Moraima Rowey)

January 18, 2010 ... ... that day, ...... I saw the sunset through the window of an airplane flying over the Caribbean Sea on a flight from Miami to Puerto Rico .......... ... with the smile painted on my face, enjoy the miracle of what life have to see these things ...... With a heart that beat even stronger ... I do not know if it was still so looked through the window of the plane, or so I thought at that time ......... moments, moments of life are the living today, now, that second exploits you smile or makes you mind blank, but you know you life and you like what you're experiencing ... Moments, there are moments, some good and some not so much, but I remember that I am here, that I have life, still breathing ....... and in my life after so much grandeur and taking you forever in my soul Nothing will ever be anything when I remember the smile because after an airplane window, watching the sun goodbye ..................!!! THE HM.14 POU DU CIEL LA CURARACHA CROSLEY FLYING FLEA

THE HM.14 POU DU CIEL LA CURARACHA CROSLEY FLYING FLEA

Frenchman Henri Mignet designed the HM.14 Pou du Ciel (Flying Flea) in 1933. He envisioned a simple aircraft that amateurs could build and even teach themselves to fly. In an attempt to render the aircraft stall-proof and safe for amateur pilots to fly, Mignet staggered the two main wings. The HM.14 enjoyed a period of intense popularity in France and England but a series of accidents in 1935-36 permanently blackened the airplane's reputation.

Thise Mignet-Crosley Pou du Ciel is the first HM.14 made and flown in the United States. Edward Nirmaier and two other men built the airplane in November 1935 for his boss, Powell Crosley, Junior. Crosley was president of the Crosley Radio Corporation. He believed that the Flea might become a popular aircraft in the United States. After several flights, a crash at the Miami Air Races in December 1935 grounded the Crosley HM.14 for good. In 1960 Patrick H. "Pat" Packard donated this Pou du Ciel to the Smithsonian. In 1987 Packard and Patti Koppa finished restoring the aircraft. The original ABC Scorpion engine was missing, so these two artisans fabricated a wooden replica.

sky day 164

my brother asked me to play some new songs for him today
so i played two new ones cause that is the length of his attention span even though i probably have about ten new songs i want to play for someone, for anyone who would listen and wouldn't make me feel like they were doing me a favor
but he listened and he said they were nice, clever, and even pretty during that one part, maureen
it's weird that he cares about that stuff now cause he never used to, he used to come into my room when i'd be playing or writing and say really rude things
either i'm improving or he's getting nicer
probably both
he is not the kind of person who cares about those sorts of things
he cares about photo opportunities and about expensive shoes
things like that
he is tired a lot he is working in an office this summer
he is leaving soon
right now it feels like i won't miss him when he goes, he's so rude sometimes and so rigid and judgemental but i know deep down he's all i really have forever
so i better love him as much as possible
it's easier for me to love strangers than my own family sometimes and i'm worried about what that means about me, about my heart
it's not always true though
in fact often it is not but these specific cases are worrying me
i guess what i am saying is that in order for me to truly dislike someone i have to know them very, very well
and only then is it possible for me to not like you, truly
such a rare occurance though, how often do i not like someone
i can only think of one or two people i've ever known that i really did not like, i like everyone a little, some people a lot

i remember earlier this summer, sitting on matthew's carpet, when he said, i can't help it and i feel like a creep but i fall in love with everyone just a little
i say yeah, it's hard, and i tell him i feel the same way
but really in that moment i just feel good knowing i'm not the only one
and i don't care if people think i love them too much or if i am in love with them or something
because people don't feel loved enough and people don't feel attractive enough or smart enough or enough good things about themselves, truly, deep down, in my opinion
and they certainly don't think enough good things about other people, which also depresses me a lot, especially when people judge the things that other people make, it breaks my heart, all i want to do is say to the person with a rude music blog or with a pretentious look on their face at shows with their arms folded or whatever, i want to say to them, at least they are making things, there are too many people who aren't and it makes me really really sad
so i hope everyone i know thinks i am in love with them for their sake

No Summer Hat

No Summer Hat

This photo was actually taken at the Denver airport awaiting my flight to Dallas. The man in the black cowboy hat walked up to his two friends (both in creme colored hats) and said, "Sorry guys, I don't own a summer hat."

Needless to say, that meant the photo had to be taken and this moment documented.

I have noticed the dark and the light colored hats in the past, but I never thought that they were seasonal like women's shoes. Does this mean men are more aware of colors and the seasons for wearing them? Are they more aware of fashion "rules"? Or, is Brokeback Mountain really what cowboys are all about?

It's worth pointing out just how much of a city-slicker cowboy this man is. Notice his friends with the right colored hats on are both wearing boots while the "no summer hat" man is in tennis shoes!

Last Shuttle Atlantis & Me

Last Shuttle Atlantis & Me

Had the opportunity last week to stand at the base of the shuttle - the last one - as final preparations were made.

We did a survey of the ponds around the launch site to remove gators etc that might have fallen into the retaining ponds.....none found.....they will check again tomorrow.

I do realize why they are shutting down this flight system - but I am stunned at the number of people being laid off and the accumulated knowledge being lost....a private company can not do the same mission for cheaper and could never support the 'pure brain power' and advances we have seen.....at least that is my take as a professional scientist (and yes I realize my view might be a minority view) ....but I've done science for 35 years as a professional and I'm truly stunned by what we are losing in expertise as we shut this program down without any firm idea of where we are going.....to think I watched the first moon landing as a kid and after this week, the USA will not have a vehicle capable of lifting a man into orbit......
