Christmas morning

Christmas morning

Mrs W hung eight stockings (appropriately cat-sized) from the pan rack on the stove.
But where, I hear you ask, are the rest of the pans? No, we haven't got the sprouts on early (for Flickrites outside UK, there is a joke about the English way of cooking sprouts: that is that they're not properly cooked if you can still count them).
The morning was generally a bit confused: when I went up to unlock the church first thing, I was going to hoist the flag, which is customary on the great holidays. As this meant going out on to the roof of the tower, I thought I'd take the opportunity to try to find the fault in the illuminated star, which had failed the night before (large electric thing on a board, which we lash to the south face of the turret with umpteen feet of rope - it can be seen for miles, even, on a clear night, from Honiton). So I took my multimeter and a tin of spare fuses, a pocket full of assorted screwdrivers, several plastic bags and a reel of tape to reseal the whole thing afterwards, plus a large can of WD40; and started climbing. There are 72 steps, and my ropey knee felt every one of them quite sorely. To cut a long story short, a fuse had blown where damp had got into the cable joint (for next year, I think I'll do a proper 'potted' joint to a longer cable, like we used for borehole pumps), and this had also tripped the breaker in the main fuse box downstairs. It was working again by the time it got dark.

We learned alot about "water points" or wells and the various costs of hand dug wells, borehole drilling,m hand and electric pumps. Clean water - the key to development, health, sanitation.
