True Stories of Crime Straight From the DA's Office (True Crime)

True Stories of Crime Straight From the DA's Office (True Crime)

The scenes recorded here are not literature but history, and the characters who figure in them are not puppets of the imagination, but men and women who lived and schemed, laughed, sinned and suffered, and paid the price when the time came, most of them, without flinching.

A few of those who read these pages may profit perhaps by their example; others may gain somewhat in their knowledge of life and human nature; but all will agree that there are books in the running brooks, even if the streams be turbid, and sermons in stones, though these be the hearts of men.

If in some instances the narratives savor in treatment more of fiction than of fact, the writer must plead guilty to having fallen under the spell of the romance of his subject, and he proffers the excuse that, whereas such tales have lost nothing in accuracy, they may have gained in the truth of their final impression.

This informative and interesting ebook contains cases such as:

The Woman in the Case
Five Hundred Million Dollars
A Murder Conspiracy
A Flight into Texas
A Case of Circumstantial Evidence

And More!

NIKE Air Jordan 11 Retro Low Black New Shoes Womens 9

Not exactly a throwback, but not entirely new to the world, the Nike Air Jordan 11 Retro Low men's retro shoes are a "throwsideways." Taking influence from the OG Jordans and mixing in a heavy dose of fresh style and technology, the Nike Air Jordan 11 Retro Low men's retro shoes give you the opportunity to bridge basketball's generational gap, equally impressing 80s Jordan-era fans as well as post-retirement followers. The Nike Air Jordan 11 Retro Low men's retro shoes feature the Nike-exclusive Air-Sole Unit in the heel, which sucks up the shock and maximizes your energy return on every take-off. We say "take-off" because if you're sporting Jordans on the court, you better have some serious hang time. Six-inch verts need not apply. We wouldn't want to upset the Nike Air Jordan 11 Retro Low men's retro shoes. These kicks are sensitive about their rep.

The Tourist General and the President of Cuba

The Tourist General and the President of Cuba

On a spring morning in April '94, I retired from my college teaching post of eight-years, The Art Institute of Seattle. That same afternoon I emptied my brokerage account, purchased a ticket on British Airways and by 6 PM I began a five year adventure travelling the world.

It was during the Fall of 1996 that I entered Cuba on a journalist visa. The truth of the matter I was there on a "walkabout", visiting Cuban cigar factories. Day after day, one at a time I sought solace in the cigar factories and by night I sat on my hotel balcony, in hotel bars and verandas drinking Mojitos in Cuban sunsets lost in the aroma and clouds of fat Cubans (cigars) and Hemingway-esque thoughts.

It was into my first week in Havana, at the Cohiba factory when I met Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, President of Cuba. At first I thought as armed soldiers entered the Cohiba factory lobby, that maybe as an American I was in for an anti-American ass-kicking. I was pushed aside, and held against the wall as the factory representative calmly explained my presence to the armed entourage. I was not calm though, I am no Bruce Willis "super-action-hero-guy".

President Castro entered the Cohiba factory lobby and I was not expecting the man to have the stature that he did, he was like a living statue, tall and solid and bigger than life. Castro was aware of my presence. In all truth, I do not recall what he asked me or how I responded, my God I was standing toe-to-toe with the FIDEL CASTRO! Then he was gone, as quickly as he had entered, - I was still being held against that wall by two of the President's armed guards.

I asked if I could complete my cigar purchase and be on my way. There was no answer, just the gleam off of two polished AK-47s was enough of a hint to keep me from asking anymore questions.

Another soldier came back into the lobby from inside the factory from where I had seen the President disappear to. The aide asked if I would join the President in a cigar - I HAD NOW DIED AND GONE TO CUBAN CIGAR HEAVEN!!! Fidel through his aide-interpreter asked me questions about my education, my "walkabout", if I was married, etc. ... , Fidel spoke English occasionally and at his whim. It was more about two cigar aficionados enjoying a love for a Cohiba in quiet air and a little "dawdle time".

The day before I was to leave Cuba and head back to London the concierge from my hotel gave me a note informing me that there would be a photo-op with President Castro. Yeah like I would turn that invitation down! I was led to a room lit by large windows, on the only chair was a field dress shirt in my size with my name on it (?!) and two boxes of Cohiba Esplendidos - what a gift! On the dresser were two shoulder epaulettes-military insignias and a large square set of campaign ribbons. I recalled laughing with President Castro, joking with me during our smoke, so I thought why not?

The photo session was fast, a bit tense I thought. We shook hands and I thanked Fidel Castro and his aides for the cigars and shirt, his aide told me to remove the other items though. The President of Cuba was gone after 3 clicks of the shutter and a day later I was back in London with my souvenirs and a once in a life time memory of Cuba.

To the Lighthouse ...

To the Lighthouse ...

"Darling," he said, staring deeply into his new wife's sparkling eyes, "You'll never know how much today means to me. I have dreamed of this for so many years and now it has finally come true ..."

He left the comment hanging in the air of the crowded reception room, said loudly enough to elicit noises of approval from those guests around them, but also said only to her. She smiled. She too had waited for this day, had weathered the endless objections of her over-protective mother.

"You're too young ... "
"He's not good enough for you ... "
"What would your father have thought ... "
"Think of your future ..."

Such had been the comments which had filled the long phone calls with her mother for more than six months now, but she had ignored them. She knew that he was the one. They liked the same things, they thought the same thoughts, they held the same views - well, most of the time anyway. And she did not mind that it meant moving away from her family and friends, because they would be together. So many new experiences, adventures in a new world - well, new to her.

And she didn't care that they would not be living the life of luxury she had become accustomed to. A small house in the north of England would be just as much fun. So it didn't have the six bedrooms her mother enjoyed, and it wasn't in the Surrey commuter belt, and yes, London would be a long way away, but what did that matter? They would be together.

They finally said their farewells and got into the car, 'Just Married' plastered to the rear windscreen and an assortment of cans and plastic bottles tied to the back of it. She was so full of anticipation and excitement that she couldn't wait a moment longer.

"Darling," she purred, "Where are we going on our honeymoon?"

"To the most romantic place I could think of. Somewhere I have always wanted to go to ..." Her mind raced ahead of him - what a sweetheart he was. He knew that she had always said that the Maldives were the most romantic place she had ever visited, "... a place where we will be totally on our own, with no-one around to disturb us," he continued, "with endless views over a wide blue sea, passing boats our only company." He smiled quietly to himself at the giggle that escaped from her lips - a giggle created by her vision of the small dug-out fishing boats slowly making their way past their palm-filled private island, as she lay in the heat of the sun watching the waves and listening to the soft breeze in the trees.

"And the good thing is," he continued,"we'll be there in less than four hours - none of those boring long-haul flights to sit through."

She felt uncomfortably surprised.

It would take much longer than four hours to reach the Maldives.

Maybe he had decided that a Greek island would be romantic? Yes, that was it - they would be going to Greece, that was less than four hours away. That would do. So maybe it wasn't as unusual as Hermione Babistock's cruise of the Antarctic, but it would be wonderful ... she was with him. The most handsome, perfect, caring, understanding man she had ever met - with the exception of her father of course ... and Rodney Willoughby, her first love ... and her brothers Tarquin and Torquil. But then no-one could ever be like
T n T, they were dynamite as she always jokingly told her friends - Hermione had been so lucky when Torquil asked her to marry him ...

He was still talking, but she was no longer listening, wondering how she could persude Hermione that Greece was the place to be seen these days. She suddenly noticed that they had missed the exit to Heathrow - just like him, so intent on what he was saying and making sure that she was happy, that he had forgotten to leave the motorway.

"Darling, you've missed the turning, you silly old thing!"

"No, no," came the reply, "We stay on this motorway for a while before we head north."

North.

NORTH! The word rang in her head like daddy's old alarm clock. They were flying from a northern airport? Why? Was it because the flights were cheaper for people up there? Yes, that must be it - he had decided to fly from Manchester because it would be cheaper. Just like him, always wanting to save the pennies when he could. Which would be sensible after all, now that she would no longer have mummy's allowance.

She calmed herself again and smiled happily as she looked out of the window watching the world flash by. Car travel always made her feel sleepy, and she was sure that if she really tried she would find the seats of the little Ford just as comfortable as mummy's Bentley.

He listened to her gentle snoring as the journey continued, pleased that she was so happy and relaxed. They were nearly there now and he was so excited at the thought of waking up in the morning with her, the whole week stretching out in front of them with no

internal compass

internal compass

My internal compass sucks. I like directions with the words Left and Right, not East and West. And once I know a path I'm good, but don't ask me to explain it to you.

For five years I lived in the same house and worked at the same job and picked up the kids from the same day care. I drove the same route every day. And I liked it that way. It's called auto pilot and for me it's a good thing because I have enough stuff on my mind. I don't want to have to think about where I'm going and how to get there.

So now I'm in a new house and the kids (two of them anyway) are at different schools. And the auto pilot apparently has not been programmed appropriately yet. Or maybe I have too much on my mind. Either way, in the last week I've - can I say it? - fucked up. All I need to do is take 94 to 35 to 92. It seems easy. It is easy! But one day I failed to make the first switch over and then less than a week later I made the first one and missed the second one. And the saddest part is that I don't even notice until many miles down the road when suddenly things aren't quite looking familiar anymore!

I figured it out and over the two days I drove over 26 miles out of my way.

I was on auto pilot, but apparently the new route hasn't been fully downloaded to the system yet.

Pedre Men's Aviator All Steel Flight Computer Alarm Chronograph Internal Slide Rule Bracelet Watch, # 0124SX

The Pedre Aviator timepiece has all the power and functionality of any world class digital alarm chronograph and a whole lot more. One hundredth of a second digital stopwatch with 24 hour time keeping. Twenty four hour digital alarm. Perpetual Calendar with day, date, month and year functions. A key feature is the unique double digital window that can be set with two different time zones, allowing the pilot to keep one window set for GMT (Zulu time) and the second window for local or destination time. The analog watch can be independently set for a third time zone for maximum functionality. The EB6 Pilot's slide rule bezel is housed inside the watch, beneath the scratch resistant crystal and precision controlled by a large crown at the two o'clock position. This provides a degree of control, accuracy and precision not found on most other pilot's watches. Plus, by housing the slide rule under the crystal, it isn't subject to the wear, fading or marring that can affect an external bezel. The alarm function is simple to set and use, too. And the 1/100th of a second chronograph/stopwatch is easy to use for lap times as well as total times. This watch also features a 360 degree compass style exterior bezel. The Aviator has every feature a pilot might want. This watch is extremely tough and durable, able to withstand the wear and abuse of the most demanding professional. The crystal is scratch resistant hardened mineral glass. The case is solid stainless steel and is water resistant to 50 meters below sea level (165 feet). Their critical analyses of nine individual icons explore the photographs themselves and their subsequent circulation through an astonishing array of media, including stamps, posters, billboards, editorial cartoons, TV shows, Web pages, tattoos, and more. Iconic images are revealed as models of visual eloquence, signposts for collective memory, means of persuasion across the political spectrum, and a crucial resource for critical reflection.
Arguing against the conventional belief that visual images short-circuit rational deliberation and radical critique, Hariman and Lucaites make a bold case for the value of visual imagery in a liberal-democratic society. No Caption Needed is a compelling demonstration of photojournalism’s vital contribution to public life.

Two Gentlemen at Rest (Thanks Ronald)

Two Gentlemen at Rest (Thanks Ronald)

Okay, so we cut that one far too close.

We have arrived in France, and we are to visit Paris today. We were up early, and we sat like dutiful cows as the ship’s personnel snowed us about why we had to come to a meet-up and stand around for an hour and a half when the ship hadn’t even docked yet.

In essence, the boat docked late due to heavy port traffic, the customs officials took their sweet time about getting onboard, and our tour ended up being late. So . . .

We hit the ground running. Literally. Our guide pointed us to a Metro station, gave us a map, and sent us on our way, with an advisory that we had to be back by 4 PM. It was already nearly noon.

But even tight timelines don’t stand in the way of your very first banana and chocolate crepe in Paris. Oh my goodness, I enjoyed it for all the ladies. And then I rushed to the Metro.

We entered the underground and ran into our first obstacle. We knew the number of the line we were to take, but hadn’t a clue which way to take it. David finally relented and asked for directions. (Parisians are very nice about helping confused tourists, by the way.)

Once we got turned around and headed in the right direction, the rest was fairly easy.

My Flickr friend, Ronald (Humandecoy), has been a great asset to us on this trip. He came through with a couple of great suggestions for things we should do in Paris. And we chose a couple: the ugly skyscraper, the Tour Montparnasse, that you can get a 360 view of the Parisian landscape, and the old cemetery that houses the remains of the late Doors rocker, Jim Morrison, Cimetiere Pere Lachaisse.

Tip: When visiting the Tour Montparnasse building, don’t hang around in the glassed-in area. Go directly to the roof access door. Expect to walk up a few flights of stairs, but it’s well worth the climb.

We finished shooting on the rooftop, and made our way back down into the Metro. Confused again, but yet again, another Parisian we approached helped us out very quickly, and happily.

Rode the subway for a fair distance, transferred at “Nation” and rode some more. Finally, we arrived at the cemetery stop.

We clambered back into the light and beheld a massive stonewall that seemed to extend endlessly down the street. A sign told us we had to walk all the way down the block to gain entrance.
We bought a guide map, and began our search for the late great Jim Morrison’s grave.

#16 the map said, but Cimetiere Pere Lachaisse is like no other cemetery you have been to. It’s filled with many lanes and winding paths. You can get lost here, and that was something we couldn’t risk.

The light was beautiful, Ronald. Truly. Thanks for the tip. It proved to be a great place to shoot. Anyway on with my story.

We finally found the tomb. I am not a fan of Jim's, so much as, I am a fan of fans. I like to see the lengths fans will go to for their adored dead idols. I was not disappointed.

Graffiti, a picture, an empty liquor bottle, and a few sorrowful souls is what you will find at Jim’s tomb.

Advice: Don’t set up your tripod or monopod because the grumpy old guy hired by the city of Paris to guard Jim’s tomb, will scold you. Heck if I know why my monopod was such a concern. But he was certainly miffed. “Nyet, Nyet,” he kept repeating as he jabbed a finger in the direction of the monopod attached to my camera.

Sure buddy, I thought. Don’t have a hissy fit -- no monopod it is. Sheesh.

Time was ticking down but the gorgeous play of light across the tombs, and the captivating textures of the gravestones kept calling to me. Snap here, snap there, and the time ticked down.

David and I kept encouraging each other to keep moving. We had one hour to get back to our tour bus, and we had no idea how we were going to get there. But the beauty of the place continued to call me.

David turned, and said, “Sheree, don’t look up. Just keep your head down, and keep on walking.

We made it back to the Metro. And once again confusion. Which train? The time ticked down. Lost and confused, and slightly tense, we flagged down a likely looking gent. This nice Parisian actually walked us to our train, and indicated the color and number of the next train we would need: Train #6 to Train #1 to the Concord stop. He smiled and sent us on our way. Phew, we were on our way.

I bet you think the story ends there. But it doesn’t.

When we emerged in the square, we congratulated ourselves with a high five; we actually had 20 minutes to spare. Enough time for a parting chocolate and banana crepe. Yum.

Five minutes to four. Time to cross the busy Concord Square and get back to our bus. We reached the other side and stared, aghast. No bus.

David began to amble a little quicker in search of our lost bus.

“I don’t think we were this close to these buildings,” I offered.

One minute to four.

Panic had set in. We did not want to be left behind in Paris. The cost of cabbing it back to the po

Col Greg "Pappy" Boyington

Col Greg

Colonel Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, USMC

"Pappy" was born in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho on December 4, 1912 and grew up in Tacoma, Washington. In his early school years he became recognized for his aggressiveness and skill in sports and became intercollegiate wrestling champion while attending college in Washington. His interest in flying and competitive spirit caused him to join the Marine Corps where he became a flight instructor. His desire to fly combat and need to pay off some old debts led him to volunteer for the "Flying Tigers" AVG group in China where the pilots were promised $675 a month plus $500 for every enemy plane they downed. Fighting bugs, scorpions, injuries, P-40 engine problems, bad weather and general Chenault's incompetent staff as well as the Japanese, Boyington claimed to have shot down six Japanese fighters, which would have made him one of the first American aces of the war. From AVG records, which were loosely kept, the most kills that can be confirmed is 3.5. He maintained until his death in 1988 that he did, in fact, have six kills, and the Marine Corps officially credits him with those kills.

He returned to the United States following the disbanding of AVG. When the United States entered the war, he rejoined the Marine Corps in early 1942 and was assigned to the Solomon Islands in the Pacific, and also served in the Bougainville campaign.

Colonel Boyington led one of the most successful squadrons in all of World War II. During his combat career with the Flying Tigers, and the Black Sheep Squadron, he successfully shot down 28 Japanese aircraft. VMF-214, the Black Sheep Squadron, flying the F4U Corsair, shot down 94 enemy fighters and had a total of 203 enemy aircraft either destroyed, probably destroyed, or damaged in only 12 weeks of combat.

The constant stress of the tropical climate and combat took its toll however, and suffering from exhaustion and skin disease Boyington flew his last combat mission on 3 January 1944 during a mission in which he and his wingman, George Ashmun, attacked a flight of 10 Japanese Zero's. After shooting 3 down, the Marine pilots were attacked by 20 more zeros from above. Boyington managed to down another zero trying to defend his wingman but Ashmun crashed and "Pappy" bailed out of his burning F4U with just inches to spare. Four Zeros strafed Boyington in the water for almost 20 minutes before a Japanese submarine picked him up. He was subsequently captured and spent the duration of World War II (over 20 months) as a prisoner of war in Japanese prison camps.

The Black Sheep scoured the skies seeking vengeance for their fallen leader, strafing barges and land targets and checking out any rumors about downed airmen sighted at sea. Nothing turned up, however, and on January 6, the Black Sheep carried out their final mission as a unit. In two six-week combat tours, VMF-214 accumulated a stellar squadron record of 1,776 missions and 168 planes destroyed or damaged, earning eight pilots ace status and the squadron a Presidential Unit Citation.

A few days after the cease fire in 1945 some of his POW mates painted "PAPPY BOYINGTON HERE!" on top of the little tin shack that they were living in. Boyington was rediscovered and in a few days on his way back to the states. Even after enduring near starvation, beatings and dysentary at the hands of his captors he gave the Japanese credit for keeping him sober for 20 months.

Life in the states was not always easy for him as the press frequently criticized him for his excess drinking-but press writers never had to fly 7 tons of metal, fuel and explosives at 400 mph with people shooting real bullets at them and then have to write letters to the families of the pilots who would not return home by the dim light of a kerosene latern. When asked how he accomplished putting together such a good fighting squadron in a short time he commented that he was just a good coach. "My BlackSheep taught me that you get along fine with the American boy if you lead him and show him and do not try to order him or drive him". Something that corporate CEO's and bureaucrats should take to heart. When asked how he felt about being a hero he said " Just name a hero and I'll prove he's a bum".

At the end of the war in August of 1945, after Boyington's release, he was presented the Medal of Honor by President Truman. The MOH had been awarded to him by President Roosevelt while he was listed as MIA. He was promoted to Colonel upon his retirement from the Corps in 1947.

Pappy died January 11, 1988 and is burried in Section 7-A of Arlington National Cemetery.

  • (direct flight) a flight with one or more intermediate stops but no change of aircraft

  • Travelers often confuse direct flights with nonstop flights but there is a big difference. A direct flight means your plane will stop somewhere enroute to your final destination. These stops can last anywhere from 1/2 hour to 2 hours.

  • (Direct Flight) Where the plane goes directly from the departure city to the arrival city and the traveler does not need to change planes.

The Eared Dove, Zenaida auriculata, is a New World tropical dove. It is a resident breeder throughout South America from Colombia to southern Argentina and Chile, and on the offshore islands from the Grenadines southwards. It may be a relatively recent colonist of Tobago and Trinidad. It appears to be partially migratory, but details are little known, although migration may be driven by food supplies.

The Eared Dove is common to abundant in savannahs and other open areas, including cultivation, and it readily adapts to human habitation, being seen on wires and telephone posts near towns in Trinidad and Venezuela, almost in all public spaces of large urban areas such as Bogota, Colombia and feeding near beach resorts in Tobago.

Eared Doves feed mainly on seed taken from the ground, but will take other items such as soaked bread. They can be agricultural pests. This is a gregarious bird when not feeding, and forms flocks especially at migration time or at communal roosts.

Its flight is high, fast and direct, with the regular beats and an occasional sharp flick of the wings which are characteristic of pigeons in general. It also has a breeding display with a steep climb and semi-circular glide down to its original perch. It builds a small stick nest several meters up in a tree[2] and lays two white eggs. These hatch in 12–14 days with another 9 days to fledging. There appears to be no fixed breeding season in most of their range, and provided with plentiful food and habitat birds will breed almost continuously.

THE HISTORY OF TITANIC

The Royal Mail Ship TITANIC was the last grand dream of the Gilded Age. It was designed to be the greatest achievement of an era of prosperity, confidence and propriety. Although no one knew it, the world was about to change drastically. Radio had been invented in 1901. The Wright Brothers' first successful flight was in 1903. The old presumptions about class, morals, and gender-roles were about to be shattered. If the concept of Titanic was the climax of the age, then perhaps its sinking was the curtain that marked the end of the old drama, and the start of a new one.

The intensely competitive transatlantic steamship business had seen recent major advances in ship design, size and speed. White Star Line, one of the leaders, determined to focus on size and elegance rather than pure speed. In 1907, White Star Line's managing director J. Bruce Ismay and Lord James Pirrie, a partner in Harland & Wolff (White Star Line's ship-builder since its founding in 1869) conceived of three magnificent steam ships which would set a new standard for comfort, elegance, and safety. The first two were to be named Olympic and Titanic, the latter name chosen by Ismay to convey a sense of overwhelming size and strength.
It took a year to design the two ships. Construction of Olympic started in December, 1908, followed by Titanic in March 1909. The Belfast shipyards of Harland & Wolff had to be re-designed to accommodate the immense projects while White Star's pier in New York had to be lengthened to enable the ships to dock. During the two years it took to complete Titanic's hull, the press was primed with publicity about the ship's magnificence, making Titanic virtually a legend before her launch. The "launch" of the completed steel in May, 1911, was a heavily publicized spectacle. Tickets were sold to benefit a local children's hospital.

She was then taken for "fitting out" which involved the construction of the ship's many facilities and systems, her elaborate woodwork and fine decor. As the date of her maiden voyage approached, the completed Olympic suffered a collision and required extensive repairs, increasing the workload at Harland & Wolff, which was already struggling to complete Titanic on schedule. Titanic's maiden voyage was delayed from March 20 to April 10.

Titanic was 883 feet long (1/6 of a mile), 92 feet wide and weighed 46,328 tons. She was 104 feet tall from keel to bridge, almost 35 feet of which were below the waterline... even so, she stood taller above the water than most urban buildings of the time. There were three real smoke-stacks; a fourth, dummy stack was added largely to increase the impression of her gargantuan size and power and to vent smoke from her numerous kitchens and galleys. She was the largest movable object ever made by man. The ship's immense size and complexity is illustrated by an incident recalled by Second Officer Lightoller. There was a gangway door on the starboard side aft "large enough to drive a horse and cart through." Yet three officers who joined the ship during her preparations spent a whole day simply trying to find their way to it.

Moreover, she was designed to be a marvel of modern safety technology. She had a double-hull of 1-inch thick steel plates and a (heavily publicized) system of 16 water-tight compartments, sealed by massive doors which could be instantly triggered by a single electric switch on the bridge, or even automatically by electric water-sensors. The press began to call her "unsinkable."

Her accommodations were the most modern and luxurious on any ocean, and included electric light and heat in every room, electric elevators, a swimming pool, a squash court (considered terribly modern), a Turkish Bath, a gymnasium with a mechanical horse and mechanical camel to keep riders fit, and staterooms and first class facilities to rival the best hotels on the Continent. First class passengers would glide down a six-story, glass-domed grand staircase to enjoy haute cuisine in the sumptuous first class dining saloon that filled the width of the ship on D Deck. For those who desired a more intimate atmosphere, Titanic also offered a stately a la carte restaurant, the chic Palm Court and Verandah restaurant, and the festive Cafe Parisien. She offered two musical ensembles (rather than the standard one) of the best musicians on the Atlantic, many of them lured from rival liners. There were two libraries, first- and second-class. Even the third class (steerage) cabins were more luxurious than the first class cabins on some lesser steamships, and boasted amenities (like indoor toilet facilities) that some of Titanic's emigrant passengers had not enjoyed in their own homes.

The original design called for 32 lifeboats. However, White Star management felt that the boat-deck would look cluttered, and reduced the number to 20, for a total life-boat capacity of 1178. This actually exceeded the reg

    helicopter
  • an aircraft without wings that obtains its lift from the rotation of overhead blades

  • A helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by one or more engine driven rotors. In contrast with fixed-wing aircraft, this allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forwards, backwards and laterally.

  • A type of aircraft that derives both lift and propulsion from one or two sets of horizontally revolving overhead rotors. It is capable of moving vertically and horizontally, the direction of motion being controlled by the pitch of the rotor blades

  • HElicopTEr is the ninth studio album by the post-industrial electronic band Download. HElicopTEr strays away the group's two previous albums FiXer and Effector in that it is less ambient and more experimental.

    forward
  • at or near or directed toward the front; "the forward section of the aircraft"; "a forward plunge down the stairs"; "forward motion"

  • the person who plays the position of forward in certain games, such as basketball, soccer, or hockey

  • Directed or facing toward the front or the direction that one is facing or traveling

  • (in sports) Moving toward the opponents' goal

  • at or to or toward the front; "he faced forward"; "step forward"; "she practiced sewing backward as well as frontward on her new sewing machine"; (`forrad' and `forrard' are dialectal variations)

  • Positioned near the enemy lines

Investigation of Increased Forward Flight Velocities of Helicopters Using Second Harmonic Control and Reverse Velocity Rotor Concept

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A946024. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Described is the behavior of a rotorcraft equipped with Higher Harmonic Stall Control (HHSC) and a Reverse Velocity Rotor (RVR). Current rotorcraft are limited in forward flight speed by retreating blade stall and compressibility effects on the advancing blade. Stall occurs as the blade encounters increasingly severe reverse flow. HHSC enables conventional rotor systems to fly on the forward and aft sections of the rotor disk, greatly reducing reliance on the mixed flow regions defined by the advancing and retreating blades. Employment of the RVR allows lift generation while the rotor is experiencing reverse flow. A similar type of two per revolution (2/rev) input can be tailored to deliver maximum benefit to RVR equipped rotorcrafi. Modification of the Joint Army Navy Rotorcraft Analysis and Design (JANRAD) computer program allows 2/rev cyclic input, use of the RVR, and analysis using high fidelity graphical output to examine angle of attack, coefficient of lift, and air load. Computational results show performance gains in conventional helicopters and high speed flight potential for RVR equipped aircraft. The RVR is applied to the Joint Heavy Vertical Lift (JVHL) aircraft conceptual design for preliminary analysis. This conceptual design can be used as an indicator of the performance% of a high speed RVR equipped aircraft.

Helicopter

Helicopter

A helicopter is an aircraft which is lifted and propelled by one or more horizontal rotors, each rotor consisting of two or more rotor blades. Helicopters are classified as rotorcraft or rotary-wing aircraft to distinguish them from fixed-wing aircraft because the helicopter derives its source of lift from the rotor blades rotating around a mast. The word 'HELICOPTER' is adapted from the French helicoptere, coined by Gustave de Ponton d'Amecourt in 1861.

As an aircraft, the primary advantages of the helicopter are due to the rotor blades that revolve through the air, providing lift without requiring the aircraft to move forward the way an airplane does. This creates the ability for the helicopter to take off and land vertically without the need for runways. For this reason, helicopters are often used to operate in congested or isolated areas where airplanes are generally not able to take off or land. The lift from the rotor also allows the helicopter to hover in one area for extended periods of time, and to do so more efficiently than other forms of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, making it useful in accomplishing tasks that airplanes are not able to perform.

Although helicopters were developed and built during the first half century of flight, some even reaching limited production, it wasn't until 1942 that a helicopter designed by Igor Sikorsky became the first helicopter to enter full-scale production, totaling over 400 copies. Even though most previous designs utilized more than one main rotor, it was the single main rotor with antitorque tail rotor configuration of this design that would come to be recognized worldwide as the helicopter

The 2011 Import and Export Market for Transistors with a Dissipation Rate of Less Than 1 Watt Excluding Photosensitive Transistors in Belgium

The 2011 Import and Export Market for Transistors with a Dissipation Rate of Less Than 1 Watt Excluding Photosensitive Transistors in Belgium

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on transistors with a dissipation rate of less than 1 watt excluding photosensitive transistors in Belgium face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying transistors with a dissipation rate of less than 1 watt excluding photosensitive transistors to Belgium? How important is Belgium compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of transistors with a dissipation rate of less than 1 watt excluding photosensitive transistors vary from one country of origin to another in Belgium? On the supply side, Belgium also exports transistors with a dissipation rate of less than 1 watt excluding photosensitive transistors. Which countries receive the most exports from Belgium? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for transistors with a dissipation rate of less than 1 watt excluding photosensitive transistors in Belgium. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for transistors with a dissipation rate of less than 1 watt excluding photosensitive transistors for those countries serving Belgium via exports, or supplying from Belgium via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Belgium fits into the world market for imported and exported transistors with a dissipation rate of less than 1 watt excluding photosensitive

REPUBLIC P-47D-30-RA THUNDERBOLT

REPUBLIC P-47D-30-RA THUNDERBOLT

Thunderbolt: the dictionary defines it as "a flash of lightning accompanied by thunder" and it aptly describes the P-47 during World War II. Thunderbolt pilots flew into battle with the thundering roar of a 2000-horsepower radial engine and the deadly flash of eight .50 caliber machine guns. This combination of a robust, reliable engine and heavy armament made the Thunderbolt successful. U. S. Army Forces (AAF) commanders considered it one of the three premier American fighter aircraft, alongside the North American P-51 Mustang and the Lockheed P-38 Lightning (see NASM collection for both aircraft). In the history of aviation, Americans built more P-47s than any other American fighter airplane.

A design history of the Thunderbolt begins in 1935, when the predecessor to Republic Aviation, the Seversky Aircraft Corporation, won an Army Air Corps fighter design competition with an airplane designated the P-35. Alexander Kartveli, Seversky chief designer, used a distinctive semi-elliptical wing plan-form on the P-35 and all the models that followed including the P-47. Kartveli improved on the P-35 with incrementally more powerful engines equipped with superchargers and these airplanes were designated the XP-41 and the P-43 Lancer. The XP-47A was to have been another modest evolutionary step, but aerial combat reports coming back from Europe in 1940 indicated the need for a breakthrough design.

Republic proposed a fighter never seen before nor hardly imagined. It was to be the largest single-engine fighter airplane built and flown by any nation during World War II and Kartveli armed it with the heaviest armament of any fighter yet built, eight .50 caliber machine guns. The designer also proposed using the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, the largest air-cooled radial available. To make the airplane as fast as possible at high altitude, Kartveli designed a turbo-supercharger system that fit inside the aft fuselage of the big fighter. This was a particularly complex design challenge. Because of the importance of smooth airflow inside several hundred feet of ducting that connected the supercharger, near the tail, with the engine in the nose, the turbo air duct system was designed first, and then the rest of the aircraft was made to fit around it. Ducting filled nearly the entire belly of the XP-47B. After the aircraft became operational and several crashes occurred, post-crash analysis revealed that these ducts formed a safety cushion between the pilot and the ground.

The Army was impressed with the new design and ordered 171 P-47Bs. On May 6, 1941, the XP-47B made its first flight but Republic needed nearly two more years of testing and refining before the Thunderbolt was ready for combat. Upon arrival in England in December 1942, pilots greeted the P-47 with mixed emotions. Many fighter pilots were accustomed to more nimble and lightweight fighters such as the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane. Pilots of the 4th Fighter Group, Eighth Air Force, first took the Thunderbolt into combat. The fighter weighed more than twice as much as the Spitfires many men had flown previously, so someone nicknamed the aircraft 'Juggernaut,' a fitting moniker that was soon shortened simply to the Jug.

Early combat sorties, first flown in April 1943, revealed that the Thunderbolt could out-dive all opposing fighters-a definite advantage in aerial combat. The P-47 could also absorb tremendous battle damage and continue to fly, and the eight .50 caliber machine guns that Kartveli installed gave it the greatest projectile throw-weight of any U. S. fighter that served in World War II, except for the Northrop P-61 Black Widow night fighter. However, initial operational experience revealed problems with the engine, radio, landing gear, range and rate of climb. The first three difficulties were soon sorted out but rate of climb was not dramatically improved until December when new broad-chord "paddle-blade" propellers. Range limitations plagued the P-47 as long as it served in the European Theater. In the Pacific, Republic solved the range problem when the firm introduced the P-47N in April 1945 with a completely redesigned wing that held more fuel. The 'N model could fly more than 3,220 km (2,000 miles) and escort Boeing B-29 Superfortresses (see NASM collection) attacking the Japanese home islands.

During the war, the P-47 underwent many other modifications to improve its combat efficiency. The P-47D model featured water injection to boost engine power, more powerful versions of the R-2800 engine, increased fuel capacity, and a "bubble" canopy for less-restricted visibility from the cockpit. Through Lend-Lease, 247 Jugs went to the British and 103 to the Soviet Union. The Brazilians flew the type in combat in the Italian Theater and in the Pacific, the Mexican 201st Fighter Squadron flies Thunderbolts in the Philippines.

Of the 15,683 P-47s built, about two-thirds reached overseas commands. A tota

UNHCR reaches 200 indigenous Colombians displaced by violence

BOGOTA, Colombia, February 13, 2009 (UNHCR) – UNHCR and other humanitarian agencies have reached some 200 indigenous people who are sheltering in remote villages in south-west Colombia's Narino region after fleeing violence on their collective territory.

On Tuesday, UNHCR called for a full investigation into the reported killings of 17 Awa indigenous people in Telembi Tortugana, located in one of the most isolated and conflict-ridden parts of the country. Two humanitarian teams, including UNHCR, other UN agencies and non-governmental organizations, arrived on Thursday in the villages of Samaniego and Buenavista, where around 200 Awa people have managed to take refuge.

The 114 Awa people who reached Buenavista are in very poor health after making the long and hazardous journey from their territory – many of the children show signs of chronic malnutrition. Another threat is the presence of anti-personnel land mines, while there is very limited infrastructure in the village to support the new arrivals.

Officials from the state body responsible for helping displaced people have arrived in the area and will start coordinating delivery of humanitarian supplies. Humanitarian assistance is in place in Samaniego, where 68 Awa had arrived by Thursday afternoon.

The Awa authorities have requested that all the displaced be moved out of the area as soon as possible and taken to a safer location further south, where the local Awa community is organizing itself to receive them.

Despite the efforts of the authorities to reach the site of the reported massacre, so far no civilian state institutions have managed to enter the area, and the bodies of the 17 presumed dead have not been found. On Wednesday, there were local reports that up to 13 more people had been killed on another collective territory known as El Sandal.

UNHCR on Friday reiterated its Tuesday call for a full judicial investigation into the reported murders. "It again asks all parties to respect international humanitarian law and urges the Colombian government to fulfill its obligations to protect civilians," a spokeswoman said.

Located on the Pacific Coast along the border with Ecuador, the department of Narino is one of the regions of Colombia most affected by the civil conflict. For the past two years, it has had the highest rate of forced displacement in the country. The Awa, with 21,000 people, are the largest indigenous group in that part of Colombia and are suffering from harassment, threats, murders and forced displacement as a result of the presence of armed groups on their territory.

The UNHCR field office in Narino has been working closely with the Awa people, who like many Colombian indigenous groups have been struggling for years to keep out of the country's internal conflict.

The Awa are one of 87 indigenous groups in Colombia. More than a third of these groups are at risk of extinction, largely as a result of armed conflict and forced displacement. More than 300,000 people were displaced in Colombia in 2007 and preliminary 2008 figures show a similar trend, bringing the total number of registered internally displaced people to more than 2.8 million.

Perry Young, Airline Captain, Aviation Trailblazer

Perry Young, Airline Captain, Aviation Trailblazer

Perry H. Young Jr., an aviator whose career spanned more than 50 years and who was the first African-American pilot for a commercial airline in the United States, died on Nov. 8 at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown, N.Y. He was 79.

Mr. Young, who lived in Pine Bush, N.Y., had cancer, said his wife, Shakeh Young.

His historic flight occurred on Feb. 5, 1957. With Mr. Young as the copilot, a 12-passenger New York Airways helicopter rose three feet, hovered gently for a moment, then soared straight up from La Guardia Airport. Nine minutes later, the snub-nose helicopter landed at Idlewild Airport, ending the racist notion ''that blacks could not fly,'' said Perry Jones, the former chairman of the Organization of Black Airline Pilots.

Up to that point, commercial airlines had refused to hire blacks in any on-board capacity, even though African-Americans had distinguished themselves as capable aviators during World War II.

During the war, Mr. Young had also been one of the first black flight instructors in the United States Army Air Corps. Assigned to the 99th Pursuit Squadron, a black unit, he taught more than 150 pilots, many of whom saw action during the war. The squadron was highly decorated and went on to become part of the Tuskegee Airmen.

''Very few of us knew anything about flying -- few blacks did -- and we thought our instructors were going to be white,'' said Lee A. Archer, 77, an African-American fighter pilot who destroyed more enemy planes than any other in the squadron. ''When I saw men like Perry Young, I was surprised and proud. They were like minor gods to me.''

After the war, when the commercial industry was unwilling to open its doors, Mr. Young went to the Caribbean to fly. Over the next 10 years, he was in Haiti, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, working in various capacities: the owner and operator of his own commercial flight service, a contract pilot and a flight mechanic. During that time he earned his helicopter pilot's license.

In December 1956, 17 years after he had earned his first pilot's license, Mr. Young was hired by New York Airways in an aggressive campaign to break the color barrier in the commercial airline business. Within months, he rose to captain and flew with the company for 23 years until it declared bankruptcy in 1979.

''He was both an airplane and helicopter pilot,'' said Mr. Jones, 63. ''He would have preferred to fly planes. But at that time, if your skin was dark, so were your chances of becoming a pilot of any kind.''

After Mr. Young was hired by New York Airways, other men became emboldened to challenge the status quo. Marlon Green, a former Air Force captain, took Continental Airlines all the way to the Supreme Court in 1963, winning a landmark judgment that opened interstate commercial airlines to black pilots.

Mr. Young took his first airplane ride in July 1937 in his hometown of Oberlin, Ohio, just days after Amelia Earhart had disappeared while trying to fly around the globe.

After that first ride, Mr. Young began taking flying lessons. He worked odd jobs while attending courses at Oberlin College, earning $9 a week to pay for flying lessons that cost $5.25 for 20 minutes. He earned his private pilot's license in 1939 and dropped out of college a year later to pursue a career in aviation.

''It was not easy,'' Mrs. Young said. ''There was a lot of hurt but he never wore it on his sleeve.''

Besides his wife, Mr. Young is survived by a son, Perry H. Young 3d of New York City; a daughter, Linda Young Ribeiro of Accra, Ghana, and three grandchildren.

"When you see a hot-air balloon going by, you immediately turn and look in awe. No matter what you're doing, you just want to look at them. Balloons have always been a great attraction" ~

~Frank Ferraro ~

Flying hot air balloons at the Balloon Fest at the airport in New Smyrna Beach ~

HotAirBalloons

Wekipedia~

In the United States, a pilot of a hot air balloon must have a pilot certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and it must carry the rating of "Lighter-than-air free balloon", and unless the pilot is also qualified to fly gas balloons, will also carry this limitation: "Limited to hot air balloons with airborne heater". A pilot does not need a license to fly an ultralight aircraft, but training is highly advised, and some hot air balloons meet the criteria.

To carry paying passengers for hire (and attend some balloon festivals), a pilot must have a commercial pilot certificate. Commercial hot air balloon pilots may also act as hot air balloon flight instructors. While most balloon pilots fly for the pure joy of floating through the air, many are able to make a living as a professional balloon pilot. Some professional pilots fly commercial passenger sightseeing flights, while others fly corporate advertising balloons.

In the UK, the person in command must hold a valid Private Pilot's License issued by the Civil Aviation Authority specifically for ballooning; this is known as the PPL(B). There are two types of commercial balloon licences: CPL(B) Restricted and CPL(B) (Full). The CPL(B) Restricted is required if the pilot is undertaking work for a sponsor or being paid by an external agent to operate a balloon. The pilot can fly a sponsored balloon with everything paid for with a PPL unless asked to attend any event. Then a CPL(B) Restricted is required. The CPL(B) is required if the pilot is flying passengers for money. The balloon then needs a transport category C of A (certificate of air worthiness). If the pilot is only flying sponsor's guests, and not charging money for flying other passengers, then the pilot is exempted from holding an AOC (air operator's certificate) though a copy of it is required. For passenger flying, the balloon also requires a maintenance log.

In Australia, a commercial operation must operate with a nominated Chief Pilot and under an Air Operators Certificate from the Australian Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA). Pilots must have different levels of experience before they are allowed to progress to larger balloons. Hot air balloons must be registered aircraft with the CASA and are subject to regular airworthiness checks by authorised personnel.

My Dream of Stars: From Daughter of Iran to Space Pioneer

In her heartwarming and empowering memoir, space pioneer Anousheh Ansari tells the story of her childhood in Iran and her family's exodus to America after the Islamic Revolution. After settling down in Texas, Anousheh built a computer technology firm from the ground up, which eventually realized a net worth of $750 million and ultimately allowed her to achieve her childhood dream of spaceflight. In her groundbreaking role as the first-ever female commercial spaceflight participant, her story became politicized and fraught with the prejudices and obstacles she had to overcome as an Iranian woman, culminating in a debate over whether she would be allowed to display both the American and Iranian flags on the sleeve of her spacesuit.

After her return to Earth, Anousheh started The Ansari Foundation, a quickly growing nonprofit which supports social entrepreneurship, and is especially committed to ensuring the freedom of women around the world and supporting female entrepreneurs. Ultimately, this evocative story shows the triumph of a woman who has become a role model to people around the globe struggling to overcome economic and cultural barriers, as well as those dreamers who look upon the stars and wish to soar among them.

NASA Astronaut Mae Carol Jemison

NASA Astronaut Mae Carol Jemison

Mae Carol Jemison, M.D. (born 17 October 1956) is an American physician and a former NASA astronaut. She became the first Black woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.

Mae Carol Jemison was born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, the youngest child of Charlie Jemison, a maintenance supervisor for a charity organization, and Dorothy (Green) Jemison, an elementary school teacher of English and math The family moved to Chicago, Illinois, when Jemison was 3 to take advantage of better educational opportunities there. Jemison says that as a young girl growing up in Chicago she always assumed she would get into space "I thought, by now, we'd be going into space like you were going to work She said it was easier to apply to be a shuttle astronaut, "rather than waiting around in a cornfield, waiting for ET to pick me up or something.

As a child growing up, Jemison learned to make connections to the world by studying nature "It sounds a little gross, but I was fascinated with pus," Jemison said. Once when a splinter infected her thumb as a little girl, Jemison's mother turned it into a learning experience "I ran and showed it to my mother and she was telling me it was pus. I was like, ‘'Well, what is that?' And I ended up doing this whole project, reading about pus. My mother always told me to go find out the information myself. She was very directive, in the sense of ‘'it's your responsibility,' sort of like those people who tell you to go look up a word in the dictionary when you don’t know how to spell it."[3] Jemison wouldn't let anyone dissaude her from pursuing a career in science "In kindergarten, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I told her a scientist," Jemison says. "She said, 'Don't you mean a nurse?' Now, there's nothing wrong with being a nurse, but that's not what I wanted to be."

Jemison loved science growing up but she also loved the arts.[5] Jemison began dancing at the age of 9. "I love dancing! I took all kinds of dance — African dancing, ballet, jazz, modern — even Japanese dancing. I wanted to become a professional dancer," said Jemison During high school she auditioned for the leading role of "Maria" in West Side Story. She didn't get the part but Jemison's dancing skills did get her into the line up as a background dancer. "I had a problem with the singing but I danced and acted pretty well enough for them to choose me. I think that people sometimes limit themselves and so rob themselves of the opportunity to realise their dreams. For me, I love the sciences and I also love the arts," says Jemison. "I saw the theatre as an outlet for this passion and so I decided to pursue this dream." Later during her senior year in college, she was trying to decide whether to go to New York to medical school or become a professional dancer. Her mother told her, "You can always dance if you're a doctor, but you can't doctor if you're a dancer."

Jemsion graduated from Chicago's Morgan Park High School in 1973 and entered Stanford University at age 16. "I was naive and stubborn enough that it didn’t faze me," Jemsion said . "It’s not until recently that I realized that 16 was particularly young or that there were even any issues associated with my parents having enough confidence in me to [allow me to] go that far away from home." Jemison graduated from Stanford in 1977, receiving a B.S. in chemical engineering and fulfilling the requirements for a B.A. in African and Afro-American Studies . Jemison said that majoring in engineering as a black woman was difficult because race is always an issue in the United States. "Some professors would just pretend I wasn't there. I would ask a question and a professor would act as if it was just so dumb, the dumbest question he had ever heard. Then, when a white guy would ask the same question, the professor would say, "That's a very astute observation.'"

Jemison obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1981 from Cornell Medical College (now Weill Medical College of Cornell University). She interned at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and later worked as a general practitioner.During medical school Jemison traveled to Cuba, Kenya and Thailand, to provide primary medical care to people living there. During her years at Cornell Medical College, Jemison took lessons in modern dance at the Alvin Ailey school Jemison later built a dance studio in her home and has choreographed and produced several shows of modern jazz and African dance.

After completing her medical internship, Jemison joined the staff of the Peace Corps and served as a Peace Corps Medical Officer from 1983 to 1985 responsible for the health of Peace Corps Volunteers serving in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Jemison's work in the Peace Corps included

BEACHCRAFT 35 BONANZA (WAIKIKI BEACH)

BEACHCRAFT 35 BONANZA (WAIKIKI BEACH)

The Beechcraft Bonanza is one of general aviation's great success stories. This classic airplane first flew in 1947 and is still in continuous production with a conventional tail rather than the distinctive V-tail with which it first flew. In addition to a generous acceptance within the aviation world, where it is regarded as the Cadillac of the single-engine light-plane field, the Bonanza also rated high marks in the industrial design field. In a survey of 100 leading designers, design teachers, and architects, published in Fortune magazine, April 1959, the Bonanza was rated as one of the 100 best designs of mass-produced products.

The Bonanza's fine performance encouraged a number of people to select it for record-breaking flights. Probably the best known of these is the Waikiki Beech, in which William P. "Bill" Odom set two distance records. Beech Aircraft Corporation sponsored both of these record-breaking flights to demonstrate the efficiency and dependability of its airplane.

On January 12, 1949, Odom established a record for light-plane flights from Hawaii to the continental United States. The Bonanza was the first light plane to make this flight, a great circle distance of 2,406.9 miles, though Odom actually flew 2,900 miles. Severe weather over Nevada forced Odom to abandon his ultimate goal of flying the entire continent and return to Oakland 22 hours and 6 minutes after takeoff.

In the log book of the Waikiki Beech, under the dates of March 6, 7, and 8, 1949, is the following entry: "X-country record-breaking flight: 36 hours 01 minutes, Honolulu to Teterboro, New Jersey. Signed Wm. P. Odom." This brief entry summed up the flight, which covered 4,957.24 officially accredited great circle miles (5,273 actual miles). Of this distance, 2,474 miles were over the waters of the Pacific Ocean and 2,799 were over the North American continent. The flight was completed at a total cost of less than $75 for fuel and oil. The average fuel consumption was 19.37 miles per gallon and average speed was 146.3 miles per hour.

A smooth takeoff from Hickam Field, Honolulu, began this record-making flight. It was uneventful, proceeding as planned except for two detours to avoid bad weather enroute. As he passed over Ohio, Odom changed his shirt and used his electric razor. When he stepped out of the Bonanza at Teterboro, he was clean-shaven and neatly dressed, as any young executive might be on arrival for a business conference.

Following the Honolulu-to-Teterboro flight, Odom made a national tour with the Bonanza, after which it was turned over to the National Air Museum. In 1951 the plane was returned to Beech Aircraft to be refurbished and lent to Congressman Peter F. Mack, Jr., for a worldwide goodwill flight. Leaving Springfield, Illinois, on October 7, 1951, the plane, rechristened Friendship Flame, visited forty-five major cities in thirty-five countries. On April 19, 1952, 113 days and 33,000 miles later, the plane returned to Wichita, Kansas.

The Waikiki Beech was the fourth Bonanza built: the only modifications made to the otherwise standard Model 35 were the fixtures and tubing required to install the extra fuel tanks, 126 gallons in the cabin and a 62-gallon streamlined tank on each wing tip. The Bonanza is regarded as a classic aircraft design of the post-World War II era and is easily identified by its distinctive V-tail. Though a number of other design refinements contributed to the efficiency of this airplane, the "butterfly tail" is the most distinguishing outward characteristic. This unique feature was tested during the waning years of World War II and found promising. The most important advantages of this design were the reduction in the number of parts and in weight. Control response with the V-tail is equivalent to conventional tail surfaces of 40 percent greater area.

Early in 1975 the Waikiki Beech was once again refurbished by Beech for exhibit in the new National Air and Space Museum. In recognition of its two significant record flights, the plane carries its Waikiki Beech markings on the left side of the fuselage and the Friendship Flame markings on the right.

Hero

No Description Available.
Genre: Feature Film-Comedy
Rating: PG13
Release Date: 7-DEC-2004
Media Type: DVD

Dustin Hoffman plays a lowlife who happens upon a plane crash and rescues the passengers, but doesn't really care about the value of his deed or the attendant publicity when the media starts searching for the hero. Another fellow (Andy Garcia) steps into the gap and claims credit, and as his life changes for the better he takes on a messianic glow. Geena Davis is the cynical television reporter who pushes the latter's fame in order to keep her story alive, and this film, directed by Stephen Frears (Prick Up Your Ears), takes a few familiar jabs at a manipulative and voyeuristic press. This is essentially an unofficial remake of Meet John Doe, though it is less dramatic and forceful in the end than Frank Capra's classic. Chevy Chase has an oddly anachronistic part as Davis's editor (maybe he thought he really was in Meet John Doe), but the film belongs to Hoffman, who makes his character a slightly cleaned-up version of the actor's own Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy. --Tom Keogh

UNHCR prepares for possible massive influx to Egypt from Libya

GENEVA, March 18 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency said on Friday it was ready to work with the Egyptian government to prepare for a massive influx of people fleeing the violence in Libya.

"The events in the coming days will be critical in determining whether mass displacement from the eastern part of Libya takes place," UNHCR's chief spokesperson, Melissa Fleming, told journalists in Geneva. She added that it was possible the current conflict could cut off access to safe places and passage out of the country.

Fleming said UNHCR staff had recorded an increase in the number of Libyans fleeing into Egypt in the past few days, with around 1,490 arriving on Wednesday, out of a total of 3,163 people.

The majority of those interviewed at the Egyptian border said that they left because of fear of being caught up in fighting. Many mentioned the threats made by the Libyan government in recent days to bombard the port city of Benghazi, which is held by anti-government forces.

After crossing into Egypt on Thursday, a Libyan family from the eastern town of Ajdabiyya told UNHCR that radio broadcasts are telling the population that they should leave or risk being caught up in combat. They also said that planes were dropping pamphlets encouraging civilians to leave.

A team from the Reuters news agency told UNHCR that they had narrowly escaped from the eastern town of Ajdabiyya on Wednesday as it fell to pro-government troops. "They came from everywhere in massive force and the rebels were no match. People ran for their lives," one of the journalists said.

A Palestinian member of the same Reuters crew has been denied entry into Egypt. He is with a 64-year-old Palestinian man and his daughter, who have been waiting since Tuesday. Other Palestinian families have been turned back.

The UNHCR team met two men who arrived at the border with gunshot wounds. One of them, who claimed to be a revolutionary shot in the fighting in the town of Raz Lanuf last week, said there was no more room in the Benghazi hospital, forcing him to come to Egypt for treatment.

Some of those interviewed were non-commital about the reasons for their departure, saying that they had simply come to seek medical attention. Yet the packed cars, piled high with luggage, suggested otherwise. One man said, "We wanted democracy but now we got war."

Meanwhile, on the Tunisian border with Libya, distant sounds of gunfire were heard from deep inside Libya on Friday. In recent days, about 1,000 new arrivals a day have been crossing into Tunisia, the majority originating from sub-Saharan Africa.

UNHCR heard consistent accounts from new arrivals of all nationalities about numerous checkpoints along the route from Tripoli to the Ras Adjir border with Tunisia. They described harassment from pro-government soldiers.

"Refugees and asylum-seekers who are in touch with UNHCR via our hotline in Tripoli and Geneva have reported that fleeing to the border has become much more perilous, particularly for single men, who risk being forcibly recruited into the army," Fleming said in Geneva.

The family of an Ethiopian man in Tripoli claims that he narrowly escaped forced recruitment when pro-government forces came to the abandoned aircraft hangar in a suburb of Tripoli where he and around 1,500 other people, including Sudanese and Chadians, have taken refuge.

Hundreds of refugees remain in hiding in Libya, with many reporting to UNHCR that they are running out of food and living in a constant state of fear. UNHCR national staff in Tripoli and a number of partners continue to offer assistance to the refugees and asylum-seekers they are in touch with.

Meanwhile, UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Friday that their joint evacuation programme for migrant workers fleeing Libya to Tunisia and Egypt had repatriated more than 50,000 people stranded at border camps. Tens of thousands of others were taken home by aircraft and ships provided by their governments. "This is one of the biggest humanitarian evacuations in history," IOM Director General William Swing said.

The two organizations also appealed on Friday to donor governments for renewed substantial funding and logistical assets to handle the second phase of evacuations. IOM estimates that more than 1 million migrant workers remain in Libya, including many from sub-Saharan Africa.

At the height of the exodus, more than 17,000 people who fled Libya were crowded into a UNHCR-supported transit camp at the Tunisian border, many awaiting help to return to their home countries. As of today, only 6,500 people remain stranded in Tunisia, 2,500 in Egypt and 1,500 in Algeria and Niger. Most wi

Flight Testing and Real-Time System Identification Analysis of a UH-60A Black Hawk Helicopter with an Instrumented External Sling Load

Flight Testing and Real-Time System Identification Analysis of a UH-60A Black Hawk Helicopter with an Instrumented External Sling Load

The Storming Media report number is A944343. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Historically, helicopter and load combinations have been qualified through flight testing, requiring considerable time and cost. With advancements in simulation and flight test techniques, there is potential to substantially reduce costs and increase the safety of helicopter sling load certification. Validated simulation tools make possible accurate prediction of operational flight characteristics before initial flight tests. Real time analysis of test data improves the safety and efficiency of the testing programs. To advance these concepts, the US Army and NASA, in cooperation with the Israeli Air Force and Technion, under a Memorandum of Agreement, seek to develop and validate a numerical model of the UH-60 with sling load and demonstrate a method of near real time flight test analysis. This thesis presents results from flight tests of a US Army Black Hawk helicopter with various external loads. Tests were conducted as the US first phase of this MOA task. The primary load was a container express box (CONEX), which contained a compact instrumentation package. The flights covered the airspeed range from hover to 70 knots. Primary maneuvers were pitch and roll frequency sweeps, steps, and doublets. Results of the test determined the effect of the suspended load on both the aircraft's handling qualities and it's control system's stability margins. Included were calculations of the stability characteristics of the load's pendular motion. Utilizing CIFER software, a method for near-real time system identification was also demonstrated during the flight test program.
