Requirements by Collaboration: Workshops for Defining Needs

Requirements by Collaboration: Workshops for Defining Needs

“I spend much time helping organizations capture requirements and even more time helping them recover from not capturing requirements. Many of them have gone through some motions regarding requirements as if they were sleepworking. It’s time to wake up and do it right–and this book is going to be their alarm clock.”
–Jerry , author of numerous books on productivity enhancement
“In today’s complex, fast-paced software development environment, collaboration–the intense peer-to-peer conversations that result in products, decisions, and knowledge sharing–is absolutely essential to success. But all too often, attempts to collaborate degenerate into agonizing meetings or ineffectual bull sessions. Ellen's wonderful book will help you bridge the gap–turning the agony of meetings into the ecstasy of effective collaboration.”
–Jim Highsmith, a pioneer in adaptive software development methods
“Requirements by Collaboration presents a wealth of practical tools and techniques for facilitating requirements development workshops. It is suitable–no, essential reading–for requirements workshop facilitators. It will help both technical people and customer representatives participate in these critical contributions to software success.”
–Karl Wiegers, Principal Consultant, Process Impact, author of Software Requirements
“The need for this particular book, at this particular time, is crystal clear. We have entered a new age where software development must be viewed as a form of business problem solving. That means direct user participation in developing ‘requirements,’ or more accurately, in jointly working the business problem. That, in turn, means facilitated sessions. In this book, Ellen Gottesdiener provides a wealth of practical ideas for ensuring that you have exactly the right stuff for this all-important area of professional art.”

–Ronald G. Ross, Principal, Business Rule Solutions, LLC, Executive Editor, www.BRCommunity.com
“Gottesdiener’s years of software development experience coupled with her straight-forward writing style make her book a perfect choice for either a senior developer or a midlevel project manager. In addition to her technical experience, her knowledge of group dynamics balance the book by educating the reader on how to manage conflict and personality differences within a requirements team–something that is missing from most requirements textbooks...It is a required ‘handbook’ that will be referred to again and again.”
–Kay Christian, ebusiness Consultant, Conifer, Colorado
“Requirements by Collaboration is a ‘must read’ for any system stakeholder. End users and system analysts will learn the significant value they can add to the systems development process. Management will learn the tremendous return they may receive from making a modest time/people investment in facilitated sessions. Facilitators will discover ways to glean an amazing amount of high-quality information in a relatively brief time.”
–Russ Schwartz, Computer System Quality Consultant, Global Biotechnology Firm
“In addition to showing how requirements are identified, evaluated, and confirmed, Ellen provides important guidance based on her own real-world experience for creating and managing the workshop environment in which requirements are generated. This book is an engaging and invaluable resource for project teams and sponsors, both business and IT, who are committed to achieving results in the most productive manner possible.”
–Hal Thilmony, Senior Manager, Business Process Improvement (Finance), CiscoSystems, Inc.
“Project managers should read this book for assistance with planning the requirements process. Experienced facilitators will enrich their knowledge. New facilitators can use this book to get them up to speed and become more effective in less time.”
–Rob Stroober, Competence Development Manager and Project Manager, Deloitte &Touche Consultdata, The Netherlands
“While many books discuss the details of software requirement artifacts (for example, use cases), Ellen’s new book zeros in on effective workshop techniques and tools used to gather the content of these artifacts. As a pioneer in requirements workshops, she shares her real-life experiences in a comprehensive and easy-to-read book with many helpful examples and diagrams.”
–Bill Bird, Aera Energy LLC
“Requirements by Collaboration is absolutely full of guidance on the most effective ways to use workshops in requirements capture. This book will help workshop owners and facilitators to determine and gain agreement on a sound set of requirements, which will form a solid foundation for the development work that is to follow.”
–Jennifer Stapleton, Software Process Consultant and author of DSDM: The Methodin Practice
“This book provides an array of techniques within a clear, structured process, along with excellent examples of how and when to use them. It’s an excellent, practical, and really useful handbook written by a very experienced author!”
–Jean-Anne Kirk, Director DSDM Consortium and IAF Professional Development
“Ellen has written a detailed, comprehensive, and practical handbook for facilitating groups in gathering requirements. The processes she outlines give the facilitator tools to bring together very different perspectives from stakeholders elegantly and with practical, useable results.”
–Jo Nelson, Principal, ICA Associates, Inc., Chair, IAF (2001-2002)
Requirements by Collaboration: Workshops for Defining Needs focuses on the human side of software development--how well we work with our customers and teammates. Experience shows that the quality and degree of participation, communication, respect, and trust among all the stakeholders in a project can strongly influence its success or failure. Ellen Gottesdiener points out that such qualities are especially important when defining user requirements and she shows in this book exactly what to do about that fact.
Gottesdiener shows specifically how to plan and conduct requirements workshops. These carefully organized and facilitated meetings bring business managers, technical staff, customers, and users into a setting where, together, they can discover, evolve, validate, verify, and agree upon their product needs. Not only are their requirements more effectively defined through this collaboration, but the foundation is laid for good teamwork throughout the entire project.
Other books focus on how to build the product right. Requirements by Collaboration focuses instead on what must come first--the right product to build.

Shorts Tucano T1 - Royal Air Force

Shorts Tucano T1 - Royal Air Force

The Short Tucano was developed by the British Short Brothers company in order to meet a requirement to replace the Jet Provost as the basic trainer for the RAF, as laid down in Air Staff Target 412. It is an adaptation of the Embraer EMB-312 Tucano fitted with the more powerful 1,100 shp (820 kW) Garrett turboprop engine in place of the EMB-312's 750 shp (560 kW) Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 engine, to give higher climb performance.

Aside from a different powerplant, the other differences between the Short Tucano and the EMBRAER Tucano are:

A strengthened airframe
A new cockpit layout similar to the Hawk advanced trainer
A four-bladed propeller, as opposed to three-bladed
Ventral airbrake and restyled wingtips
The fitting of Martin-Baker MB 8LC ejection seats for both crew
A new oxygen system
A new flight data recorder
A modified canopy

The Tucano was selected in 1985 in preference to the Swiss Pilatus PC-9 and the British Hunting Firecracker. The first Garrett-engined Tucano flew in Brazil on 14 February 1986, with the first Shorts built production aircraft flying on 30 December 1986.[1] The decision to replace the 750 PT-6 engine used in the standard EMBRAER model with the 1,100 shp (820 kW) Garrett TPE331-12B engine and "bird-strike" proofing of the cockpit canopy to UK standards (combined with the fitting of Martin Baker ejection seats) caused a number of problems which delayed the introduction of the aircraft into service until 1989.

Operational History

Since first deliveries to the RAF in 1989, the Tucano has been operated primarily from No 1 Flying Training School at RAF Linton-on-Ouse to provide basic fast-jet lead-in flying training to RAF and RN student pilots. The deployment is officially to 72 (Reserve) Squadron, 207 (Reserve) Squadron and 76 Squadron (Tucano Air Navigation Squadron).[citation needed] Student pilots fly around 130 hours during their training course on the Tucano before progressing to the Hawk T1 aircraft at RAF Valley.

In service the Tucano has proven to be 70% cheaper to operate than its predecessor.[citation needed] With a greater range and endurance than the Jet Provost, it can fly two consecutive sorties before being refuelled. One of the key performance requirements was that it can climb to 15,000 ft (4,600 m) in six minutes, in comparison to the Jet Provost's 15 minutes; this gave considerably more training value for each one-hour sortie.

You likely keep your gun in a soft padded case or maybe a gun cabinet with a felt lined rack or something similar to protect it so why would you scratch your gun while cleaning or repairing it by setting it on a hard surface that could easily scratch your firearm?

PROTECT YOUR GUN AND WORK AREA

The soft polyester top will ensure your gun doesn't get scratched while the neoprene rubber backing on the mat will keep everything in place and prevent your work surface from sliding around. This mat will also keep harmful chemicals, oil and dirt from penetrating down to your desk, bench or the area where you normally clean and work on your firearms. After the mat begins to accumulate too much dirt, chemicals, or oil just throw it in the wash on a gentle cycle, allow to air dry and it will be virtually like new.

Late, Late at Night

In a searingly candid memoir which he authored himself, Grammy Award-winning pop icon Rick Springfield pulls back the curtain on his image as a bright, shiny, happy performer to share the startling story of his rise and fall and rise in music, film, and television and his lifelong battle with depression.
In the 1980s, singer-songwriter and actor Rick Springfield seemed to have it all: a megahit single in “Jessie’s Girl,” sold-out concert tours, follow-up hits that sold more than 17 million albums and became the pop soundtrack for an entire generation, and 12 million daily viewers who avidly tuned in to General Hospital to swoon over his portrayal of the handsome Dr. Noah Drake. Yet lurking behind his success as a pop star and soap opera heartthrob and his unstoppable drive was a moody, somber, and dark soul, one filled with depression and insecurity.
In Late, Late at Night, the memoir his millions of fans have been waiting for, Rick takes readers inside the highs and lows of his extraordinary life. By turns winningly funny and heartbreakingly sad, every page resonates with Rick’s witty, wry, self-deprecating, brutally honest voice. On one level, he reveals the inside story of his ride to the top of the entertainment world. On a second, deeper level, he recounts with unsparing candor the forces that have driven his life, including his longtime battle with depression and thoughts of suicide, the shattering death of his father, and his decision to drop out at the absolute peak of fame. Having finally found a more stable equilibrium, Rick’s story is ultimately a positive one, deeply informed by his passion for creative expression through his music, a deep love of his wife of twenty-six years and their two sons, and his life-long quest for spiritual peace.

Marketplace sites may be liable for trademark abuse

Marketplace sites may be liable for trademark abuse

Online auction sites such as eBay may be liable for trademark infringement if they "actively" promote counterfeit products, European judges ruled today.

The verdict came in the latest of a succession of cases brought by cosmetics giant L'Oreal in courts across the European Union to defend its brand image.

L'Oreal claims that the popular auction site is liable for the sales on its website of counterfeit goods and "parallel imports" - L'Oreal-branded products not intended for the EU market.

In today's final verdict, the full panel of EU judges said it was the right of national courts to order companies such as eBay "to take measures intended not only to bring to an end infringements of intellectual property rights, but also to prevent further infringements of that kind".

Online retailers are not unfamiliar with the sale of the counterfeit goods and the controversies the ensue. As My-Retail Media reported last month, a legal suit was filed against Tradekey.com as the site listed exact replicas of Officine Panerai, Alfred Dunhill, Chloe and Montblanc Simplo products.

Burn Notice is a canny, clever comedy-thriller show about a covert operative with a heart of gold. Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) is in the middle of a top-secret mission when he discovers he's been "burned"--basically, fired without warning. After barely extricating himself from danger, he wakes up in Miami, where the government has abandoned him and locked him out of his own bank account. To make ends meet, he takes on private detective jobs (helping an old lady who's fallen victim to a con artist; rescuing a young girl who's being tricked into white slavery; helping a mother whose son has been kidnapped by the boy's father... only it turns out the father is the rightful parent and the "mom" is an assassin sent to kill him--a nice guest star appearance by Lucy Lawless, Xena: Warrior Princess), while trying to figure out who burned him and why. Westen tries to remain clinical in his approach to these problems, but he always ends up protecting the helpless with his sophisticated spy skills. Over the course of the first season, he gradually uncovers a mysterious conspiracy that plans to use his talents for their own nefarious ends. Burn Notice deftly mixes the old and the new. The old: Our hero has a hot ex-girlfriend (Gabrielle Anwar, Scent of a Woman), a goofy sidekick (cult hero Bruce Campbell of the Evil Dead movies), and a meddling mom (Sharon Gless, Cagney & Lacey) who help and hinder him in his investigations, as well as a MacGyver-esque skill for making deadly devices out of common household products. The new: A media-savvy way of deconstructing the tricks and techniques of spies and government agencies, often resulting in smart and highly entertaining plot twists. Donovan, handsome but cheeky, combines a light comic touch with a convincing secret agent cool, and the supporting cast fill their niches with aplomb. Their escapades are pretty breezy and occasionally skirt being glib, but most of the time the show finds an extremely entertaining balance between action, romance, and humor. The extras are few (some montages of characteristic moments from the series, including one of the many bikini-clad girls the Miami locale provides) and the commentaries, rather than covering entire episodes, just discuss a few select scenes from each show. Fortunately, the series itself holds up; imagine a cross between Magnum, P.I. and The Wild Wild West (the classic series, not the insulting Will Smith movie) and you're on the right track. --Bret Fetzer

travel day today. even though flying to FL should take no more than 3.5 hours, it took me a whole day since i was trying to get the cheapest possible ticket. here is my little plane from philly to washington (yea.. i couldn't just drive to DC and catch the next flight from there... airlines are weird)
anyway, after i got to miami i tried to figure out how cheap it would be to rent a car vs. taking the greyhound and having to stay in a hotel one night.
the bus was cheaper (unfortunately .. it would have been way more fun to have driven myself) but i made it to the middle of the keys at around 10 pm and got a tour of the turtle hospital grounds by flashlight then took a quick dip before calling it a night.

Avro Anson engine

Avro Anson engine

This is one of the two Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah engines from a Mark I Avro Anson, #EF909. The aircraft belonged to No.5 Air Observer School, and crashed in this stream on the east side of the coll between Foel Grach and Carnedd Uchaf, North Wales, in the winter of 1943. The blisters on the engine cowling, some more of which can be seen top-right, belong unmistakably to an Anson.

Sadly, this engine has been removed since I photographed it here 1971.

The crash of Anson #EF909 was quite a saga, but unusually for sagas of this type - it was one with a happy ending! The aircraft took off from its base at RAF Jurby, at the north end of the Isle of Man, on 30th November 1943, on a navigation exercise to Worcester and back. On board the aircraft were Sergeant Jim Knight (pilot); Sergeant Gilbert (Wireless Operator) and Leading Aircraftsmen Reid and Thomson (pupil navigators).

The flight reached Worcester without incident and then turned onto the reciprocal course for the journey home. The route should have taken them back up the Welsh border over Shrewsbury and Wrexham, before passing out over the Irish Sea between the mountains of North Wales to their left, and the city of Liverpool away to their right. However, as they droned slowly back northwards, the anti-aircraft guns around Liverpool (which had been bombed quite heavily by the Germans) opened fire directly ahead, indicating that they had drifted off their planned course to the east.

To avoid being shot down by their own gunners, Sergeant Knight turned the aircraft onto a westerly course while the navigators attempted to fix their positions using their Radio Direction Finder, or RDF equipment. This involved rotating a circular directional antenna on the roof of the aircraft in order to find and then plot the direction to two separate radio beacons of known position. The headings obtained could then be used to triangulate their position.

There were delays getting the necessary radio fixes, meanwhile the aircraft flew into bad weather and the wings started to ice up, which forced the pilot to reduce height to 3000ft. Eventually Sergeant Knight informed the Navigator that he was going to head out to sea to get rid of the ice on the wings. He leaned forward to unlock the land compass . . .

. . . some time later, Sergeant Knight became aware that the steady roar of the aircraft's engines had been replaced by the sound of running water - probably coming from the stream in this photo! Disorientated in the pitch black night, Knight eventually staggered out of the aircraft, where he was soon joined by two more shadowy figures, which proved to be Gilbert and Reid. Only Thomson was missing. They started a search both in and around the aircraft, which had by necessity to be conducted by feel only, and after hunting for several minutes, they located Thomson a short distance away from the aircraft, who having regained his senses, was found to have suffered a broken ankle - the worst injury suffered by any of them.

The crash occurred at 21:30, which meant that they faced a long cold night in the remains of the Anson - made all the more miserable by the fact that they couldn't find the emergency rations - which contained chocolate!

With the coming of the grey dawn, and with cloud swirling around them, they realised that they were not going to be seen by search aircraft any time soon, and that the best way to get help was to go and find it. Knight and Gilbert set off together, heading westwards. I have known the details of this crash since I was a teenager, and it has always interested me that they chose to set off uphill. You would think the natural choice would be to follow the stream downwards to the east. Anyway, it proved to be an inspired choice, as the stream in which the aircraft lay, drops gently downhill to the east for about half a mile, before plunging over a 700ft cliff into the waters of Llyn Dulyn!

Having reached the ridge top, they heard the waters of the Afon Wen ahead, which they decided to head for and then follow downhill. It wasn't easy! The name Afon Wen is Welsh for 'White River', which gives some indication of the steepness of the hillside they had to descend - in flat soled flying-boots. Eventually they reached the valley bottom and a larger river - the Afon Caseg. The ground here was much flatter, but was much boggier in consequence.

After another hour of walking through the mist shrouded landscape, they heard voices ahead, and to their alarm, they realised the voices were not speaking English. How far out could their navigation have been?!! After an awkward few moments, where, to be on the safe side, they walked forwards with their hands raised, they were able to convince the men they met that they were RAF and discovered to their relief, that they were in Wales! Their new found friends took them to Llwyn Radyr near Gerlan, the upper part of the slate-mining town of Bethesda, where they did what the British ha

Wright Flyer 1903 (engine)

Wright Flyer 1903 (engine)

The Wright brothers inaugurated the aerial age with the world's first successful flights of a powered heavier-than-air flying machine. The Wright Flyer was the product of a sophisticated four-year program of research and development conducted by Wilbur and Orville Wright beginning in 1899. After building and testing three full-sized gliders, the Wrights' first powered airplane flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, making a 12-second flight, traveling 36 m (120 ft), with Orville piloting. The best flight of the day, with Wilbur at the controls, covered 255.6 m (852 ft) in 59 seconds.

The Wrights pioneered many of the basic tenets and techniques of modern aeronautical engineering, such as the use of a wind tunnel and flight testing as design tools. Their seminal accomplishment encompassed not only the breakthrough first flight of an airplane, but also the equally important achievement of establishing the foundation of aeronautical engineering.

The Flyer received some minor repairs and cleaning in 1976 just before being moved into the Smithsonian's then new National Air and Space Museum building. In 1985, the airplane was given its first major treatment since preparing it for loan to the Science Museum in late 1926 and early 1927. It was completely disassembled, the parts thoroughly cleaned and preserved, and all new fabric covering applied. A careful search was made to locate new fabric that matched the original as closely as possible. When the fabric was replaced in 1927, it was sewn on in a slightly different way than originally done by the brothers in 1903. When stitching the new fabric in 1985, a large section of original flown 1903 wing covering was available and used as a pattern, ensuring the accuracy of the 1985 restoration.

Flying Down to Rio: Hollywood, Tourists, and Yankee Clippers (Centennial of Flight Series)

Flying Down to Rio: Hollywood, Tourists, and Yankee Clippers (Centennial of Flight Series)

In this book, author Rosalie Schwartz uses the 1933 RKO-Radio Pictures production Flying Down to Rio to examine the interplay of technology and popular culture that shaped a distinctive twentieth-century sensibility. The musical comedy connected airplanes, movies, and tourism, ending spectacularly with chorus girls dancing on the wings of airplanes high above Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Hollywood fantasy capped three decades during which airplanes and movies engendered new expectations and redefined people's sense of well-being, their personal satisfactions, and their interpersonal relations. Wilbur and Orville Wright flew their airplane in 1903, at the same time that filmmakers began to project edited, filmed stories onto large screens. Spectators found entertainment value in both airplane competitions and motion pictures, and movie producers brought the thrill of aviators' antics to a rapidly expanding audience. Meanwhile, air shows and competitions attracted large crowds of tourists. Mass tourism grew as a leisure-time activity, stimulated in part by travelogues and feature films. By 1930, the businessmen who envisioned transporting tourists to their destinations by airplane struggled to overcome the movie-exaggerated association of flight with danger.
Schwartz weaves these threads into a story of human daring and persistence, political intrigue, and international competition. From Wilbur and Orville to Fred and Ginger, Schwartz's narrative follows the fortunes of aviation and movie pioneers and the foundations and growth of Pan American Airways and RKO-Radio Pictures, the two companies that came together in Flying Down to Rio.
By the end of the twentieth century, aviation, movies, and mass tourism had become powerful global industries, contributing to an internationally connected, entertainment-oriented culture. What was once unthinkable had now become expected.

After a long but uneventful overnight flight from Miami to Lima, Peru, we arrived in Cusco. As we descended below the clouds, the Andes mountains magically appeared, in all their glory, green and moist following a recent rain.

The terminal welcomed us with a three-piece band playing typical Quechua music. All the luggage and boxes arrived in good condition with the exception of two of the team’s personal bags. In Lima they advised that they had been sent straight through to Cusco, but in Cusco they were nowhere to be found. Hopefully, they will arrive on the next flight in.

As Cusco sits at 11,000 feet, our hotel welcomed us with Coca matte to help alleviate altitude sickness. It has a very pleasant taste and complimented the alfahores cookies. The hotel is colonial in design with a central courtyard. The stone patio frames a central fountain and the walls display many pieces of antique Peruvian artwork. It is very quaint and inviting to us weary travelers. Cusco is damp and about 50 degrees, but the sun came out shortly after our arrival to everyone’s delight.

After receiving our room keys and placing our luggage in the rooms, the team gathered in the dining room for lunch. Though we all look a bit worn and tired, we enjoyed a delicious lunch and jovial conversation.

Since we were not expected at the local regional hospital until tomorrow, we were left to our own devises for a few hours. Many team members rested while others utilized what is probably their only free time this week and explored some of this beautiful, colonial town.

At 8:00 pm the team found a small restaurant close to the hotel and had a light meal, enjoying music played by a young man, before calling an end to this very long day.

Road to Ivory Coast

Road to Ivory Coast

May 23: Waking up on the 21st, I felt pretty damn weak and dehydrated. I had to sit down right after I got up. I ended up hanging around for the entire day; Alan stayed in bed for this whole time. At midday or so I went to the supermarket next to The Campagnard and bought some ravioli, a can of pork and beans (!!!), some apples, a cucumber, and a tomato. Alan did not want to eat anything, so I gave him an apple, which was his only meal for the day. In the evening I went to The Baron and had some burgers. A slow day, just recuperating from the trip.
Yesterday Alan was feeling better and was up. After some moping, we went to the supermarket and got stuff for a hearty spaghetti brunch (tomatoes, avocado, eggplant, onion, and ground hamburger!) In the afternoon we went downtown to check the visa situation with Burkina Faso. We take a cab to the embassy and they tell us a visa costs 13,000! Forget it! So Alan and I leave in search for the Ivory Coast embassy. After walking a couple of blocks, I ask this random guy and his sister how to get there. He says he’ll show us, and then has us follow him to his house a block away. We sit in his living room (with his sister) and I’m thinking that someone is going to take us to the embassy. Instead, the guy is out back in a heated argument with some woman. After a few minutes, we decide this is a little weird, so we leave. The sister agrees with our move, and follows us.
We end up just getting another taxi. The sister hops in after us. Alan thinks she’s probably looking for money. We get to the embassy, which is just a suite above the Air Afrique office. The sister follows us again, so we say thank you and goodbye to her. She’s cool and does the same. The embassy receptionist tells us that we don’t need to get visas because we’re Americans. Cool. We leave and walk near the river, and I show Alan the Palais de Congres where we had the guinea worm conference. After some walking back, we catch a cab and go back to the maison.
So we decide to go around Burkina Faso- it’s not worth the price of the visa to go. I suggest maybe we can check on visa prices from the Ivorian side- perhaps it’s cheaper. We also decide to go directly to Abidjan and save Dogon country for when we get back. What’s more, we decide to leave tomorrow. That night we go to The Baron for more burgers; we sit with some Malian volunteers: Eric, Liz, and another guy. We go back to the house and relax before going to bed and back on the road.
The morning we get our things together and hail a taxi. The driver tells us that there are buses going directly to Abidjan from Bamako- I’m a little surprised. He takes us to the gare and we buy our tickets for 14,000 CFA each. I buy a plate of noodles for breakfast, and soon we load into a large, comfortable, and not-too-old orange bus. I’m impressed! At 9:15 we leave the gare. It’s a comfortable ride on a main, paved road, so we move quickly. At early afternoon we get to the southern town of Sikasso- things are getting greener and greener!

A big storm looms in front of us and we soon drive into it. Not much lightning, but plenty of rain.
At 6-ish we come to the Ivorian border, and it’s raining steadily. We have no trouble crossing, even without visas. At the border town in Ivory Coast we had to get off the bus and wait around for an hour or two ‘til we boarded a new bus. Alan and I are right in front. Soon into the leg of this trip it gets dark, and we can only see the dense foliage and tall trees by the headlights.
The road is amazing! Plenty of signs, painted, perfectly maintained- a first-world road. We drive all night, stopping often to do god-knows-what. I’m soon hungry and fatigued; it’s impossible to sleep, although I doze off a few times. It’s even pretty cold, and we pass through some occasional fog. After a long night, it begins to lighten up at around 4 or 5 in the morning, maybe an hour or two away from Abidjan. I wake up a bit more to take in the scenery. Good god! Mali or Senegal has nothing on Ivory Coast! Green and lush is an understatement. It’s like Germany, the U.S. Northwest, and Hawaii wrapped into one. I wake up Alan to see all of this.
We get to Abidjan- the city is amazing- just like a city in the States, with overpasses and everything (by now we’re traveling on an actual highway). The morning sun is filtering through big, puffy storm clouds of last night. Our final destination is a crowded, unpaved, and very muddy taxi gare. We hop off as the bus is momentarily stuck between cars. All of the taxis are bright orange, and we immediately begin inquiring if anyone knows where the Corps de la Paix is. “Quoi?” Finally, our driver seems to know, so we get in. But then he says he doesn’t, so we start to get out. He suggests (or did we suggest?) we go to the U.S. embassy to inquire. So we go to the embassy, which is located on the “plateau”- the fanciest part of the city. I won’t give myself a hernia trying to describe how incredible the city is. The guard

Assorted Nigiri

Assorted Nigiri

BAM

I ordered this nigiri set so I could sample the quality of the fish. They were very generous in their chef-selected choices (minus the absence of hamachi, so cheap them), and I had to evaluate each one.

Sakke (Salmon) = s'okay, Seattle destroys this salmon in general. But the lemon slice did add a nice ceviche-touch to the salmon, cooking the surface with its acid

Ika (squid) = It's ika.

Tamago (egg) = Nice and soft, can tell they used that square omelette pan to cook it

Shrimp (ebi) = S'okay, wished there was amaebi

Tobikko Gunkan (Flying Fish Roe) = Nice and crunchy

Ikura (Salmon Roe) Gunkan = !!! Dizang, the ikura here is good. It's very rich, each egg bursting it's sweet/salty contents like a symphony in tandem with your chewing

Ahi = Stop the presses. It's over. Hands down great ahi. It's generously sliced (can barely put the whole thing in your mouth, much less so people with lesser mouths), and it lacked any connective tissue whatsoever. But, I must save my breath. From this prospect of ikura and maguro, the spicy ahi/ikura donburi needs it's own introduction.

LEGO City Rescue Helicopter

LEGO City Rescue Helicopter

Whether by sea or land, you're always prepared for the rescue. And the rescue helicopter is equipped with a stretcher and a winch that actually work, so there's no situation you can't handle. The sky's the limit! Set includes two rescue officers and one civilian mini-figure. Cockpit, side door, and back door open. Back and top propellers spin. Includes 249 LEGO pieces.

Save the day on land or sea by flying boldly to the rescue! When someone needs help in Lego City, the emergency rescue team is ready to race to the scene. This 245-piece set contains everything that the included mini airborne rescue workers need to jump into action. Rush through the air on spinning rotor blades or hover overhead to coordinate ground crews. For dangerous spots, lower an emergency worker and stretcher to those in need, then use the working winch to lift them all to safety. When it's time to come in for a landing, the helicopter gently rests on three rolling wheels. Functional doors on the cockpit and sides allow easy access to supplies and personnel, while the rear door lowers to accommodate the stretcher. Included emergency tools attach to the helicopter or store neatly inside. An instruction booklet includes detailed color diagrams for assembling the helicopter, which measures roughly 12 inches from tip to tail. Once assembled, the helicopter provides plenty of opportunity for imaginative play, but rough handling will likely ground the chopper for repairs. This playset may be combined with other Lego City sets (sold separately) to create a custom Lego metropolis. --Heather Lyndon

this morning molly and i explored wheaton (her suburb outside chicago) a bit and then she dropped me off at o'hare airport. my flight to philly was scheduled for 3:50 and was already pushed back to 4:30 by the time i got here. then... guess what. the united airlines lady offered up a round trip voucher for anyone willing to get bumped to the 6pm philly flight. ha. i said yes, why not? even better, all the seats they had room for were in first class! so i got to ride back in first class. i have benefited very much so from united's suckiness.... a free trip to chicago basically, 2 free round trip ticket vouchers, and a first class upgrade. not too bad. on another note, in o'hare airport the toilets have automatic seat covers - how cool is that!? i took a picture.

The Iditarod Trail Committee is heavily sponsored by 4 key partners. Alaska Airlines does not seem to be one of them any more. Alaska Airlines has decided to benefit the mushers directly, by offering free one-way tickets from Nome back to Anchorage, and 75% off their shipping costs to get their dogs back home. Which could be a huge expense. Previously they had given over $50,000 to the ITC, of which $15,000 went to the race purse, the rest was spent on transporting veterinarians and race officials throughout the race.

Unexpected stop in Honolulu

Unexpected stop in Honolulu

After the initial flight issues, we had a great vacation on Kauai. It was a little windy, rainy but since the island is one of the rainiest ones, that was part of the deal. The last day of our stay came fast.

We checked in at the Lihue airport on Thursday shortly after noon but again, we did not get our seats assigned. That was a bit worrying since we had the detour and delays a few days earlier. After some exciting minutes, the gate agent finally gave us seats. We boarded on time, but there was some complication with the on board computer and that resulted 15 minute delay. When the pilot announced that the computer was fixed and in a few minutes we'll be on our way, we believed him. But only for a few minutes - he announced that they did not have the required amount of fuel and he had to call the fuelling service to fill up the fuel tanks. Another 45 minutes and we were really on our way to San Francisco. About an hour after our departure, they abruptly stopped serving the drinks and soon the pilot announced that we were to land in Honolulu in about 20 minutes. A problem arose with one of the rotors and he had to request an emergency landing in Honolulu. We were too heavy for Lihue, and Honolulu had the longest runways to accept an overweight plane (note, we now had sufficient fuel for crossing the ocean). Luckily the fire trucks did not need to go in action, but they were all waiting for us. The pilot managed to land smoothly.

We stayed on board for an hour or so as the mechanics were trying to fix the issue. After an hour we were let into the gate area to wait there. another hour and they announced that the flight was officially cancelled and they would be rebooking us. this was not promising, since all flights were full or almost full. Ours was a full flight and they had only 15 seats on the next plane (for the first class passengers).

They told us to call the travel agents to get rebooked - then they informed us that they are automatically rebooking us and we had to go to pick up the luggage and go to the lobby area where the ticketing was. At the baggage claim they informed us that the luggage will be another 30 minutes, so we should go to the lobby area instead. We were in the first half of the line, but since they did not know what they were doing, the line did not move or moved only a tiny bit during the first hours. I called United reservation and tried rebooking our tickets. They were not aware of our emergency landing and wanted to give us tickets from Lihue and a hotel stay until the next day flight. I had to inform her that we were trying to get home from Honolulu and not from Lihue...

After she reviewed a couple of options through LA and SF, I reminded her that there were flights through Vancouver too. She told me that there were no flights from Vancouver to Halifax, so that would not work. That made me a bit upset, since I know there are several flights from Vancouver to Halifax through Toronto every day. Finally she believed me and looked up the route and managed to reserve seats on all three legs.

We had little time, so we rushed to AC ticketing to get the boarding passes. At Air Canada ticketing they did not find our reservation and it took about 15 minutes for her to finally locate it somehow. She gave us seats in the last row and got good seats on the other two flights too. We were treated well on the flight to Vancouver, they firmly believed I was a pilot or something, since we got the AC reserved seats. All AC flights were smooth and on time to Halifax. We arrived home only half a day late instead of two days late (had I accepted United's rerouting offer).

If you book with Expedia or similar online ticketing agents, make sure you read the fine prints. "You may be denied boarding unless you check-in for each flight at least 90 minutes prior to departure." Just add to this that you may be denied boarding even if you arrive more than 90 minutes earlier... Especially if they oversell the seats.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles - the port of Border Patrol Paranoia. I shall be happy to never come back to this smog-bound city…

Even in the military states like Nicaragua, the process of passing through border security and customs was benign compared the farce of the port of Long Beach, Los Angeles.
First the officials delayed the clearance of the ship for 45 minutes. Then they required everyone to come onshore for clearance… those leaving the ship, those heading out on a tour, those who were bound for Vancouver and had no plans to even go ashore in the States, the entire crew… absolutely everyone.

Two and a half hours of a slow march up a long open air ramp and then through winding lines in a blackened cavernous hall before finally being interviewed, finger-printed and photographed…
I felt bad for those disembarking here who actually wanted to make connecting flights… some missed them. The octanarians with their walkers and wheel chairs were also very stressed.

Welcome to LA?
NOT!

The only saving grace was that we had docked right beside the Queen Mary. As we stood for an hour on that open air windy ramp, I at least had binoculars and a long lens with me and was able to visually explore the grand old Dame.

I Don't Know How She Does it (Movie Tie-in Edition) (Vintage Contemporaries)

Now a Major Motion Picture

Delightfully smart and heartbreakingly poignant, Allison Pearson’s smash debut novel has exploded onto bestseller lists as “The national anthem for working mothers.” Hedge-fund manager, wife, and mother of two, Kate Reddy manages to juggle nine currencies in five time zones and keep in step with the Teletubbies. But when she finds herself awake at 1:37 a.m. in a panic over the need to produce a homemade pie for her daughter’s school, she has to admit her life has become unrecognizable. With panache, wisdom, and uproarious wit, I Don’t Know How She Does It brilliantly dramatizes the dilemma of every working mom.

Allison Pearson's debut novel, I Don't Know How She Does It, is a rare and beautiful hybrid: a devastatingly funny novel that's also a compelling fictional world. You want to climb inside this book and inhabit it. However, you might find it pretty messy once you're in there. Narrator Kate Reddy is the manager of a hedge fund and mother of two small children. The book opens with an emblematic scene as Kate "distresses" a store-bought mince pie to make it appear homemade. Her days are measured in increments of minutes and even seconds; her fund stays organized but her house and family are falling apart. The book is a pearly string of great lines. Here's Kate on lack of sleep: "They're right to call it a broken night.... You crawl back to bed and you lie there trying to do the jigsaw of sleep with half the pieces missing." On baby boys: "A mother of a one-year-old son is a movie star in a world without critics." On subtle office dynamics:
The women in the offices of EMF [Kate's firm] don't tend to display pictures of their kids. The higher they go up the ladder, the fewer the photographs. If a man has pictures of kids on his desk, it enhances his humanity; if a woman has them it decreases hers. Why? Because he's not supposed to be home with the children; she is.
There's inherent drama here: Kate is wildly appealing, and we want things to work out for her. In the end, the book isn't a just collection of clever lines on the theme of working motherhood; it's a real, rich novel about a character we come to cherish. --Claire Dederer

Two Lockheed Martin F-35A Fighters Arrive Together At Edwards AFB

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., May 17th, 2010 -- Two Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] F-35A Lightning II stealth fighters flew nonstop from their final-assembly site in Fort Worth, Texas, to Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., today, signaling a further expansion of F-35 flight test operations. The arrival is the first in a series that will increase the Edwards F-35 test fleet to at least eight aircraft.

U.S. Air Force Test Pilot Lt. Col. Hank "Hog" Griffiths and Lockheed Martin F-35 Chief Test Pilot Jon Beesley flew the jets, known as AF-1 and AF-2, nonstop in the first multi-ship, long-range F-35 flight.

"The ferry flight went very smoothly, and reflects how the Air Force and Lockheed Martin will work cooperatively as we enter long-term F-35 testing at Edwards," Beesley said. During the jets' deployment to Edwards, the F-35s will undergo ground- and flight-test activities for propulsion, aerial refueling, logistical support, weapons integration and flight-envelope expansion.

"Through rigorous flight testing we are developing dominant and lethal 5th generation fighter capability for America and her allies," said Doug Pearson, Lockheed Martin vice president of F-35 test and verification. "This historic moment at Edwards Air Force Base begins the planned expansion of F-35 flight test to a third permanent operating location. Lockheed Martin F-35A flight testing is a highly integrated partnership with the United States Air Force." Three F-35s are currently undergoing flight trials at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., the primary test site for the F-35B short takeoff/ vertical landing variant and the F-35C carrier variant. F-35s have conducted more than 200 test flights, with six additional test aircraft scheduled to begin flying and deploying to the two test sites this year.

The F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant – designed to meet U.S. Air Force requirements – is also the primary export version of the Lightning II. The air forces of Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Denmark and Norway will employ the F-35A.

F-35 test aircraft are supported by the F-35 Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) and managed by the Lockheed Martin F-35 Sustainment Operations Center in Fort Worth. ALIS is the worldwide support system reporting and recording the prognostics and health of all F-35s around the globe to ensure mission readiness.

The F-35 Lightning II is a 5th generation fighter, combining advanced stealth with fighter speed and agility, fully fused sensor information, network-enabled operations, advanced sustainment, and lower operational and support costs. Lockheed Martin is developing the F-35 with its principal industrial partners, Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. Two separate, interchangeable F-35 engines are under development: the Pratt & Whitney F135 and the GE Rolls-Royce Fighter Engine Team F136.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 136,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2009 sales of $45.2 billion.

Ray Bradbury. The Veldt

"George, I wish you'd look at the nursery."
"What's wrong with it?"
"I don't know."
"Well, then."
"I just want you to look at it, is all, or call a psychologist in to
look at it."
"What would a psychologist want with a nursery?"
"You know very well what he'd want." His wife paused in the middle of
the kitchen and watched the stove busy humming to itself, making supper for
four.
"It's just that the nursery is different now than it was."
"All right, let's have a look."
They walked down the hall of their soundproofed Happylife Home, which
had cost them thirty thousand dollars installed, this house which clothed
and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them.
Their approach sensitized a switch somewhere and the nursery light flicked
on when they came within ten feet of it. Similarly, behind them, in the
halls, lights went on and off as they left them behind, with a soft
automaticity.
"Well," said George Hadley.

They stood on the thatched floor of the nursery. It was forty feet
across by forty feet long and thirty feet high; it had cost half again as
much as the rest of the house. "But nothing's too good for our children,"
George had said.
The nursery was silent. It was empty as a jungle glade at hot high
noon. The walls were blank and two dimensional. Now, as George and Lydia
Hadley stood in the center of the room, the walls began to purr and recede
into crystalline distance, it seemed, and presently an African veldt
appeared, in three dimensions, on all sides, in color reproduced to the
final pebble and bit of straw. The ceiling above them became a deep sky with
a hot yellow sun.
George Hadley felt the perspiration start on his brow.
"Let's get out of this sun," he said. "This is a little too real. But I
don't see anything wrong."
"Wait a moment, you'll see," said his wife.
Now the hidden odorophonics were beginning to blow a wind of odor at
the two people in the middle of the baked veldtland. The hot straw smell of
lion grass, the cool green smell of the hidden water hole, the great rusty
smell of animals, the smell of dust like a red paprika in the hot air. And
now the sounds: the thump of distant antelope feet on grassy sod, the papery
rustling of vultures. A shadow passed through the sky. The shadow flickered
on George Hadley's upturned, sweating face.
"Filthy creatures," he heard his wife say.
"The vultures."
"You see, there are the lions, far over, that way. Now they're on their
way to the water hole. They've just been eating," said Lydia. "I don't know
what."
"Some animal." George Hadley put his hand up to shield off the burning
light from his squinted eyes. "A zebra or a baby giraffe, maybe."
"Are you sure?" His wife sounded peculiarly tense.
"No, it's a little late to be sure," be said, amused. "Nothing over
there I can see but cleaned bone, and the vultures dropping for what's
left."
"Did you bear that scream?" she asked.
'No."
"Sorry, no."
The lions were coming. And again George Hadley was filled with
admiration for the mechanical genius who had conceived this room. A miracle
of efficiency selling for an absurdly low price. Every home should have one.
Oh, occasionally they frightened you with their clinical accuracy, they
startled you, gave you a twinge, but most of the time what fun for everyone,
not only your own son and daughter, but for yourself when you felt like a
quick jaunt to a foreign land, a quick change of scenery. Well, here it was!
And here were the lions now, fifteen feet away, so real, so feverishly
and startlingly real that you could feel the prickling fur on your hand, and
your mouth was stuffed with the dusty upholstery smell of their heated

The lions stood looking at George and Lydia Hadley with terrible
green-yellow eyes.
"Watch out!" screamed Lydia.
The lions came running at them.
Lydia bolted and ran. Instinctively, George sprang after her. Outside,
in the hall, with the door slammed he was laughing and she was crying, and
they both stood appalled at the other's reaction.
"George!"
"Lydia! Oh, my dear poor sweet Lydia!"
"They almost got us

Ejection Seat

Ejection Seat

In aircraft, an ejection seat is a system designed to rescue the pilot or other crew of an aircraft (usually military) in an emergency. In most designs, the seat is propelled out of the aircraft by an explosive charge or rocket motor, carrying the pilot with it. The concept of an ejectable escape capsule has also been tried. Once clear of the aircraft, the ejection seat deploys a parachute. Ejection seats are common on military aircraft since the cost of training a skilled pilot often far outstrips the cost of the aircraft he is flying.

A bungee-assisted escape from an aircraft took place in 1910. In 1916 Everard Calthrop, an early inventor of parachutes, patented an ejector seat using compressed air.

The modern pattern for a plane was invented by Romanian inventor Anastase Dragomir and its design was successfully tested on August 25, 1929 at the Paris-Orly Airport near Paris and in October 1929 at Baneasa, near Bucharest. Dragomir patented his "catapultable cockpit" at the French Patent Office (patent no. 678566, of April 2, 1930, Nouveau systeme de montage des parachutes dans les appareils de locomotion aerienne).

The design was perfected during World War II. Prior to this, the only means of escape from an incapacitated aircraft was to jump clear ("bail-out"), and in many cases this was difficult due to injury, the difficulty of egress from a confined space, g forces, the airflow past the aircraft, and other factors.

The first ejection seats were developed independently during World War II by Heinkel and SAAB. Early models were powered by compressed air and the first aircraft to be fitted with such a system was the Heinkel He 280 prototype jet fighter in 1940. One of the He 280 test pilots, Helmut Schenk, became the first person to escape from a stricken aircraft with an ejection seat on 13 January 1942 after his control surfaces iced up and became inoperable. The fighter, being used in tests of the Argus As 014 impulse jets for Fieseler Fi 103 missile development, had its regular HeS 8A turbojets removed, and was towed aloft from Rechlin, Germany by a pair of Bf 110C tugs in a heavy snow-shower. At 7,875 feet (2,400 m), Schenk found he had no control, jettisoned his towline, and ejected. The He 280, however, never reached production status. Thus, the first operational type to provide ejection seats for the crew was the Heinkel He 219 Uhu night fighter in 1942.

In Sweden a version using compressed air was tested in 1941. A gunpowder ejection seat was developed by Bofors and tested in 1943 for the Saab 21. The first test in the air was on a Saab 17 on 27 February 1944, and the first real use occurred in 29 July 1946 after a mid-air collision between a J 21 and a J 22. The Saab 21 was the first aircraft to have an ejection seat as standard equipment.

In late 1944, the Heinkel He 162 featured a new type of ejection seat, this time fired by an explosive cartridge. In this system the seat rode on wheels set between two pipes running up the back of the cockpit. When lowered into position, caps at the top of the seat fitted over the pipes to close them. Cartridges, basically identical to shotgun shells, were placed in the bottom of the pipes, facing upward. When fired, the gases would fill the pipes, "popping" the caps off the end, and thereby forcing the seat to ride up the pipes on its wheels and out of the aircraft. By the end of the war, the Do-335 Pfeil and a few prototype aircraft were also fitted with ejection seats.

After World War II, the need for such systems became pressing, as aircraft speeds were getting ever higher, and it was not long before the sound barrier was broken. Manual escape at such speeds would be impossible. The United States Army Air Forces experimented with downward-ejecting systems operated by a spring, but it was the work of Sir James Martin and the British company Martin-Baker that was to prove crucial.

The first live flight test of the Martin-Baker system took place on 24 July 1946, when Bernard Lynch ejected from a Gloster Meteor Mk III. Shortly afterwards, on 17 August 1946, 1st Sgt. Larry Lambert was the first live U.S. ejectee. Martin-Baker ejector seats were fitted to prototype and production aircraft from the late 1940s, and the first emergency use of such a seat occurred in 1949 during testing of the Armstrong-Whitworth AW.52 Flying Wing.

Early seats used a solid propellant charge to eject the pilot and seat by igniting the charge inside a telescoping tube attached to the seat. Effectively, the seat was fired from the aircraft like a bullet from a gun. As jet speeds increased still further, this method proved inadequate to get the pilot sufficiently clear of the airframe and increasing the amount of propellant risked damage to the occupant's spine, so experiments with rocket propulsion began. The F-102 Delta Dagger was the first aircraft to be fitted with a rocket-propelled seat, in 1958. Martin-Baker developed a similar design, using

Soviet Long-Range Jet Airliner Ilyushin IL-62. !>25BA:89 40;L=5<038AB0;L=K9 0280;09=5@ ;-62.

The Ilyushin Il-62 (NATO reporting name Classic) is a Soviet long-range jet airliner conceived in 1960 by Ilyushin. As successor to the popular turbo-prop Il-18 and with capacity for almost 200 passengers, the Il-62 was the largest jet airliner when it first flew in 1963. It entered Aeroflot service on 15 September 1967 with an inaugural passenger flight from Moscow to Montreal. One of four pioneering designs (the others being Boeing 707, DC-8, and VC10), the Il-62 was the first such type to be operated by the Soviet Union and a number of other nations, becoming the standard long-range airliner for several decades. It was the first Russian pressurised aircraft with non-circular cross-section fuselage and ergonomic passenger doors, and the first Russian jet with six-abreast seating (the turbo-prop Tu-114 shared this arrangement) and international-standard navigation lights.
Over 30 nations operated the Il-62 with more than 80 being exported and others leased by Russian-sphere and Western airlines. Special VIP (salon) and other conversions were also developed. The Il-62M became the longest-lasting model in its class with some being in civilian service for three decades. Expensive to operate compared to new airliners, the number in use was reduced after the 2008 recession. It does not comply with international noise restrictions although government and emergency response examples are exempt from this ruling. The Il-62's successors include the wide-bodied Il-86 and Il-96, both of which were made in smaller numbers and not widely exported.
Development
The Il-62 replaced the fast turboprop Tu-114 on long range routes. As the Tu-114 was just entering service when the Il-62 was on the drawing board, Ilyushin had time for an unhurried design, test, and development programme. This was useful, since the Il-62 did call for significant development.
The Il-62 and the British Vickers VC10 are the only commercial airliners with four engines fitted in twinned/paired nacelles by the sides of, and beneath, a "T" shaped empennage (T-tail), although the Lockheed JetStar business jet shares this configuration. In the case of Ilyushin, the configuration was dictated by TsAGI, the Soviet Union's aerospace agency, since Ilyushin's design bureau lacked the resources to engage in configuration studies. Although offering an efficient clean wing, the aft-engined T-tail configuration is now known to have a number of serious drawbacks. It is tail-heavy, requiring a large and heavy empennage because the tail moment arm is short. Worryingly, aerodynamic wash (shadow) from the wing blankets the tail when the nose is pitched up (high angle of attack) leading the aircraft into a condition known as deep stall. This calls for complex and (in the 1960s) unreliable automatic stall recovery systems such as stick shakers and stick pushers.
Early aircraft (prototypes, pre-production and initial production aircraft) display an evolution from thin or thick kinked leading inboard edges to the ultimate thick and straight 1966 shape. The characteristic "dog tooth" also moved until fixed before production began. The engine installation also evolved, with the engines' longitudinal axes canted by 3 degrees from the horizontal; thrust reversers were added to the outer engines, and the entire installation was slimmed down as production began.
The prototype was grossly underpowered. Its intended NK-8 engines were not ready and small Lyul'ka R-7PB turbojet engines had to be installed temporarily. The prototype with the R-7PB engines (registered !!! -06156) first flew on 3 January 1963. It crashed after clipping a perimeter fence during the development program. The production Il-62 was powered by the originally intended rear-mounted Kuznetsov NK-8-4 engines. The first Il-62 powered with NK-8 engines (registered !!! -06153) first flew in 1964.

Delta Airlines Boeing 757-232 N686DA

The Boeing 757 is a mid-size, narrow-body, twin-engine jet airliner manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Passenger versions of the 757 can carry between 186 and 279 passengers, and have a maximum range of 3,100 to 3,900 nautical miles (5,700 to 7,200 km), depending on variant and seating configuration. The Boeing 757 has been produced in two fuselage lengths: the original 757-200 entered service in 1983, and the stretched 757-300 entered service in 1999. A production freighter version, the 757-200PF, has been sold along with a combi model, the 757-200M. Passenger 757-200s have also been converted to the 757-200SF freighter specification.

Launched with orders from Eastern Air Lines and British Airways in 1978, the Boeing 757 was intended to replace the previous narrow-body 727 trijet on short- and medium-routes. The 757 was conceived and designed in tandem with the Boeing 767, a wide-body twinjet with which it shares design features and two-crew flight decks. The operating similarities between the two aircraft allow pilots to obtain a common type rating to operate both jets, after the completion of a transition course. After its introduction, the 757 became commonly used by operators in both the United States and Europe, and particularly with mainline U.S. carriers and European charter airlines. The 757 has also been acquired for use as government, military, and VIP transport.

Production of the 757 ended on October 28, 2004 after 1,050 had been built. The final aircraft was delivered to Shanghai Airlines on November 28, 2005. The -200 is the most common variant, accounting for the majority of all 757s ordered. The -300 is the longest narrow-body twinjet ever produced. As of 2010, Delta Air Lines operates the largest 757 fleet. A total of 945 Boeing 757 aircraft were in airline service in July 2010.

Winglet upgrades

Increased fuel prices have put pressure on airlines to improve the average fuel efficiency of their fleets. American Airlines's 757-200 aircraft each burned US$4,153 of jet fuel to fly from St. Louis to San Francisco in 2004; in 2008, the same quantity of fuel cost US$14,676. One way to improve the efficiency of an airplane is to reduce lift-induced drag by installing winglets. Although production of the aircraft has ceased, blended winglets are available from Aviation Partners Inc. as a retrofit to increase fuel efficiency and range. Aviation Partners claims improvements of 5% on fuel efficiency and 200 nautical miles (370 km) on range. Winglets on the 757 have been approved for the 757-200 series as 757-200WL (757-200WingLets), and for the -300 series. Continental Airlines received the first modified -300 with winglets on February 3, 2009.

The Longest Day

THE CLASSIC ACCOUNT OF THE ALLIED INVASION OF NORMANDY
The Longest Day is Cornelius Ryan's unsurpassed account of D-Day, a book that endures as a masterpiece of military history. In this compelling tale of courage and heroism, glory and tragedy, Ryan painstakingly recreates the fateful hours that preceded and followed the massive invasion of Normandy to retell the story of an epic battle that would turn the tide against world fascism and free Europe from the grip of Nazi Germany.
This book, first published in 1959, is a must for anyone who loves history, as well as for anyone who wants to better understand how free nations prevailed at a time when darkness enshrouded the earth.

A true classic of World War II history, The Longest Day tells the story of the massive Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Journalist Cornelius Ryan began working on the book in the mid-1950s, while the memories of the D-day participants were still fresh, and he spent three years interviewing D-day survivors in the United States and Europe. When his book was first published in 1959, it was tremendously successful, establishing many of the legends of D-day that endure in the public's mind. Ryan was enormously skillful at weaving small personal stories into the overall narrative, and he would later use the same technique to depict the airborne invasion of Holland in A Bridge Too Far. Not only is The Longest Day a pleasure to read, but subsequent historians, dutifully noting its accuracy, have relied heavily on Ryan's research for their own accounts. In short, the book is a "must read" for anyone interested in the D-day invasion. --Robert McNamara
