The Gliding Flight

The Gliding Flight

THE GLIDING FLIGHT is a return to paper airplane basics: one person, one piece of paper, and a few folds later, one airplane. Using a refreshingly inventive approach to designs and flying characteristics, you can make 20 original paper planes, such as the Stealth, the Wind Devil, the Glart, and the Skid Kid. The book's flip-book animation demonstrates the basic origami folds, with clear step-by-step assembly for each design. A crease here and there is all you need to create high-performance aircraft ‚Ai no scissors, no glue. In the current age of electronic toys, THE GLIDING LIGHT proves you can still have fun with a simple sheet of paper and a little imagination.

Fantastic Flight

Let's Do Launch! These aren't your ordinary paper airplanes. These airplanes loop, circle back, flap their wings and spin, tumble, soar, and, of course, glide. In his best-selling book, THE GLIDING FLIGHT, award-winning paper airplane designer John Michael Collins introduced us to the craft of paper airplane folding. In FANTASTIC FLIGHT, the much-anticipated sequel, Collins reveals the next generation of fold-and-fly fun. He explains how to craft 24 new and amazing flying machines—like the Looper, the Bat plane, the Super Canard, and the Manta Ray—using just single sheets of paper. Featuring a wide range of paper airplanes, from simple designs suitable for young children to more complex planes that, believe it or not, will stay aloft indefinitely, FANTASTIC FLIGHT presents clear, step-by-step folding instructions for an activity the whole family can enjoy. As an extra bonus for teachers, Collins includes a special section on planning educational paper airplane contests complete with lesson ideas. FANTASTIC FLIGHT reveals how to combine aerodynamics, origami, and a single sheet of paper to create phenomenal flying fun.THE GLIDING FLIGHT has sold more than 40,000 copies.

Per aspera ad astra

Per aspera ad astra

which means "To the stars through difficulties".

Chronologically the very first impression of "Mexico from above", watched from the plane's window...
I chose the title because of the "inhuman" effort it took for us to travel to mexico... A short complication overview, anyone? Well, you have no other choice anyway...! ;-))

- Uncertainty about possible swine flu due to poor news reportings in media...

- Reconsidering after 2 weeks; final decision was to refuse from cancelling the trip

- 1st change in flight booking:
Flight route Zurich, CH --> Cancun, MEX cancelled.
New route: Zurich, CH --> Frankfurt, GER --> Cancun, MEX instead...

- 2nd change in flight booking:
Zurich, CH --> Frankfurt, GER --> Cancun, MEX cancelled as well. %-P Now flying Zurich, CH --> Frankfurt, GER --> Miami, USA --> Cancun, MEX. Believe it or not, this one really took place at last... :-O

- Oh yes, and not to mention this weird "Nonimmigrant Visa Waiver Arrival/Departure Form" we had to fill out before reaching Miami... Basically only for getting a permisson to enter the US (Airport Miami), in order to wait there 5 hours for our next flight. With the side effect of getting a lesson in legibly writing US block capitals for forms. Yes, nothing else allowed. Tsss... :-]
(I better keep my personal opinion about this kind of bureaucrazy for myself...^^)

But nevertheless, to have the chance to visit such a beautiful place I'd say was worth all those adventures for me / us... :-)

Line-up at Tim Hortons

Line-up at Tim Hortons

I arrived at the airport well in advance of the boarding time for my flight to Vancouver. Unfortunately, I ended up spending 50 minutes or so in line at Tim's waiting for a coffee and muffin.

From what I could understand, there was a flight to Cancun that was delayed or something, so Air Canada had given a plane load of people vouchers for a breakfast. Both Tim's and the Second Cup down the hall only had their regular 6am shift on.

So, understaffed, and those staff that were there were not tres rapido. That Tim's has a near monopoly on coffee at the airport is quite clear. They would never survive in downtown Montreal. Combine that with the additional overhead of having to process vouchers instead of cash, and you've got one long line-up.

I imagine that it was only the prospect of facing a five-hour flight without a coffee before hand (even Tim's coffee, which is mediocre at the best of times) that got me to wait in line for so long. I wouldn't normally wait that long in line for money, let along a beverage.

On the upside, it made every other wait on the trip seem like no time at all.

USSP in Italy - 61

Tired, I set my things down in the hall outside the seating rooms and got some water from the bathroom sink to drink. Not my proudest moment, but all of the sun and running had made me more than a little dehydrated and there was nowhere to get regular water on this five-hour train ride. Afterward, I had the intention of walking down the train to find my seat. The train, however, saved me the trouble. Despite the seat number stamped on my ticket, there was actually no assigned seating. Instead, it was every person for themselves. The number on my ticket didn't even seem to correspond with a seat that actually existed anyway. So, as I was the last person on the train and all of the rooms were full, I stayed with the people in the hall, pulled down one of the fold-out seats from the wall, and settled in for the trip.

Having said this, I must admit that most of this train ride was actually remarkably enjoyable. No photo could really do justice to the feeling, but after the hectic running around that preceded it, there was something supremely enjoyable about standing by the open window, the cool air rushing by, and hearing the roar of the train on the tracks below me. I leaned on the windowsill and watched as, out there in the distance, the occasionally lights of small towns drifted by in the darkness. And up above, the stars hung still, the ineffable lights of the cosmos glimmering down on this silent, peaceful scene. Things would occasionally rush by near the train, like a concrete building or shadowy bridges, and then they'd be gone, their shapes taken back into the darkness behind.

I sat by the window for a few hours at least, occasionally closing my eyes to see if sleep would come, but the small seat wouldn't allow it. Instead I experimented with my camera, but nothing I could do with it would turn the scene outside into anything but a dark blur with some small lights. About the only thing I ended up with was a photo of the conductor. Traveling on a night train is a novel enough thing to me that I felt like showing others. At some of the stops I would see if anyone got off and freed up any seats in the rooms near me, but it was only late in the trip that this happened. And, while the seats in the rooms were more comfortable, they were cramped and the rooms were warm, and no sleep would come there either. Eventually 3 AM came and the train stopped at Bologna. Not knowing where exactly the buses stopped, and too tired to properly figure it out, I took a taxi to the airport.

The hours at the Bologna airport were tiring and full of waiting, then waiting in lines, so I'm not going to recount them in detail, except to say that I lost some souvenirs because of it. Since my luggage was a few kg overweight, it was a choice between paying an exorbitant fee and transferring some things to my carry-on. I chose the latter option, removing two bottles of olive oil from my suitcase. Before I realized my mistake, my luggage had been taken out of sight on the conveyor belt. Those bottles of olive oil, which I had bought in Urbino weeks beforehand, depressingly never left the airport.

The first flight was short. I sat next to an older German coupled and I may have even fallen asleep for a few minutes. Frankfurt, the final stop before getting back to the United States, was more interesting.

Italian Railways Class 626 at Cesena, Emilia Romagna in 1988.

Italian Railways Class 626 at Cesena, Emilia Romagna in 1988.

During the summer of 1988 I was having problems with a certain lady friend, hence I came to the conclusion that it would be in my best interests to keep a low profile and leave the country for a while. This was dealt with by that good old trusted time proven method of purchasing a two week Italian Rail Rover ticket for....ME only.
Yes, The Italian Job Part 2 was on....and I was on it !
On the morning of departure, I once again prepared the good old reliable corned beef sandwiches (with brown sauce of course) and got my vital life support belongings together i.e. spare pens, camera film, writing pads etc. I was excited, this was like the good old days.
But this was different, I wasn't catching the first bus of the day to Stoke station, I was rocking from side to side on the Piccadiily Line tube into the centre of town.
I then proceeded to the Italian Railway Agency Office (or Tourist Centre) somewhere just off Bond Street (I think) in London's West End to purchase my "Get Out Of Jail Card", then continued onwards to Victoria Station for Class 73 haulage to Gatwick Airport before boarding a Dan-Air flight and flying "backwards" to Rimini on an elderly BAC 1-11 (or something like that).
I'd served my "post Beeching" British railways network apprenticeship, so decided to give the Italian rail system (including Sicily) a good thrashing, as well as visiting Monaco, Austria and Yugoslavia (before all hell let loose) in the process.
First night was spent travelling overnight to Rome with my minimal belongings tied to me just incase I fell asleep (which I did from time to time), the second night was spent in cheap "dodgy" accomodation. I spoke briefly (on the creaky, well trodden, dirt groomed narrow stairs) to the "well built" girl who was staying in the room next door to me, she looked as hard as nails and wasn't all that attractive, but she appeared to have lots of male friends....they were coming and going at regular intervals throughout the night !
The overnight pattern continued throughout the tour i.e. train, dodgy pensione, train, dodgy pensione, train, convent etc etc.
Anyhow, I won't describe the "ins and outs" of the whole tour because (A) space here does not permit, and (B) only a seasoned traveller or someone with a wild imagination would believe it anyway !
No, I will concentrate on the loco type above, I was fascinated by these ancient "wooden" looking electric monsters.
The loco above is E626 025 and is seen passing northbound at speed through Cesena Station, Forli, Emilia Romagna with a lengthy parcles/goods train, probably on route to Bologna (a sort of Italian style Crewe) on 29th August 1988.
I welcome any comments on this type of loco, I can't imagine for one moment that they are still in service today.
Probably best to enlarge and scroll to the right to get a better view of things, as per normal it's a poor quality image, taken with poor quality equipment, with the sun in the right place....and the buildings in the wrong place !

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

The exemplary novel of the Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgeralds' third book, The Great Gatsby (1925), stands as the supreme achievement of his career. T. S. Eliot read it three times and saw it as the "first step" American fiction had taken since Henry James; H. L. Mencken praised "the charm and beauty of the writing," as well as Fitzgerald's sharp social sense; and Thomas Wolfe hailed it as Fitzgerald's "best work" thus far. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when, The New York Times remarked, "gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession," it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s that resonates with the power of myth. A novel of lyrical beauty yet brutal realism, of magic, romance, and mysticism, The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature.

In 1922, F. Scott Fitzgerald announced his decision to write "something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple + intricately patterned." That extraordinary, beautiful, intricately patterned, and above all, simple novel became The Great Gatsby, arguably Fitzgerald's finest work and certainly the book for which he is best known. A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Self-made, self-invented millionaire Jay Gatsby embodies some of Fitzgerald's--and his country's--most abiding obsessions: money, ambition, greed, and the promise of new beginnings. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter--tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning--" Gatsby's rise to glory and eventual fall from grace becomes a kind of cautionary tale about the American Dream.
It's also a love story, of sorts, the narrative of Gatsby's quixotic passion for Daisy Buchanan. The pair meet five years before the novel begins, when Daisy is a legendary young Louisville beauty and Gatsby an impoverished officer. They fall in love, but while Gatsby serves overseas, Daisy marries the brutal, bullying, but extremely rich Tom Buchanan. After the war, Gatsby devotes himself blindly to the pursuit of wealth by whatever means--and to the pursuit of Daisy, which amounts to the same thing. "Her voice is full of money," Gatsby says admiringly, in one of the novel's more famous descriptions. His millions made, Gatsby buys a mansion across Long Island Sound from Daisy's patrician East Egg address, throws lavish parties, and waits for her to appear. When she does, events unfold with all the tragic inevitability of a Greek drama, with detached, cynical neighbor Nick Carraway acting as chorus throughout. Spare, elegantly plotted, and written in crystalline prose, The Great Gatsby is as perfectly satisfying as the best kind of poem.

The exemplary novel of the Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgeralds' third book, The Great Gatsby (1925), stands as the supreme achievement of his career. T. S. All courtesy of my pending divorce... airfare, hotel, rental car, food and all other whatever paid for by you know who... I also bought a brand new lens today, but I paid for that with my own photography earnings, a Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens, it's a really spectacular lens that I have been wanting since I demo'ed it at the PDN Photo Plus Expo in NYC back in Oct. '09.

Found a great condo; hoping to get approved for May 1st move-in date. Wish me luck!

Talk About a Fish Story

I just got back from a trip to Thailand. I highly recommend it if you can swing the airfare. I had so many miles from work travel that I went for free. The history, the natural beauty, the people – it’s great. I found myself down by the harbor looking for a place to grab some fresh fish. I happened to walk by when these two men were hauling this ginormous catfish out of their boat. They let me jump into their picture. Can you believe the size of this fish? Not very much Omega-3 content in catfish, but it’s impressive anyway.

Dinner Time

Dinner Time

Catching birds in flight and getting good focus at the same time is an art...and one I have yet to master. As one of the bald eagle brought this dinner home to the eaglet in the nest, I tried getting some shots of the eagle flying infrom right to left in the sky. This is the closest one to being in focus...and because I haven't mastered panning for birds in flight, I managed to chop off the bird from part of the frame. This is cropped down so the bird fill more of the final image. As you can see, there is some sort of animal (I think it is some other bird like a crow) locked in the talons. The shots as the eagle came into land in the nest with it are a little better.

Mumbai Calling

Mumbai Calling

Mumbai Lifeline 786-Sites of commuting: sights of perception

The bar-waitress who is Aishwarya Rai to herself, or a trucker’s secret desire to be a matinee idol.
An inner wall of a train compartment that has long been used as an ‘interactive’ site of pasting and defacing advertisement stickers. The texts that assure a better, affluent, trouble-free you.
The colonial edifices that might be dwarfed only by your aspirations. The cabby who drives to the mall, leaving past his days as a textile worker. The Sai Babas, the 786s and the idols that bless us all.

The exploration of spatiality and temporality in Mumbai, from the vantage-point of a newcomer and a suburban Mumbaikar, is a never-ending novel. As dream-seekers turn into day job-holders, more space is divided, expanded and commuted. I explores revisits the formulations that are basic to the perception of space and time in Mumbai.I chooses different vehicles for the formulations, literally. The present suite of his paintings deals with the centrality of public transport vehicles to the everyday aesthetics of the city.

Per se, there are only two modes of Public Transport available in Mumbai. The ‘Mumbai Local trains’ that belong to Indian Railways, the largest public undertaking in the world, and buses that belong to BEST, arguably the most disciplined bus-operator in India. All other modes of hireable transport are privately owned, though the public authorities are supposed to control their operations. Taxis and Auto-rickshaws reign supreme when the trains and buses are sparsely available: typically in after-hours, and anytime in the newly developing areas of the city. This has been the situation for last four decades, and although every mode of transport has expanded with the city’s growth, Mumbaikars haven’t entirely skipped the long wait for a public vehicle. To add to their woos, any such vehicle is crowded/already engaged. Though a major overhaul, maybe a makeover of Mumbai’s transport system is on the cards for a decade now; the existing transport experience is unchanged, thanks to bureaucracy and shortage of funds.

There is a perceived, self-engaged, sentimental side to the experience of navigating through Mumbai in a public transport vehicle. The essence of this city of dreams, its gusto and ‘It’s my life’ attitude makes its presence felt in the user-made alterations of the carriages, too. ‘Decorated’ taxis and rickshaws make their kitsch tore-interpret glam and glitz that the city is proud of. The trains and buses, in turn, are more open and accommodative. They are ready to flaunt your graffiti or even to be assaulted by the selective, playful erasure of instructions that leave a cynical, yet humorous mark. The altered aesthetics enlivens, individualizes the otherwise identical carriages.

There is utilitarian value to the act of tearing off advertisements in Mumbai. The cloth banners, torn off the roads, have long served as bed sheets for the poor of this city, whereas the flex banners now are used for making shelters. As an ever-growing city, Mumbai did not wear an identical, planned, embellished look. Mumbai’s ‘subaltern aesthetics’ is not of decoration and colour. It is rather about individual fantasy and collective pain. It then allows the utility of tearing, sees the wicked joy of defacement as incidental to making yourself comfortable. It also gives you the multiplicity of lifestyle choices coupled with the freedom to choose/grow your ‘village’ within Mumbai. The aesthetics has grown with the spatiality and temporality, as perceived by the people. My paintings, as such, populate so many intimate perceptions that it is hard to stamp them cityscapes.

Jump to: navigation, search
Located at 317 S. Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, Homer Laughlin Building is a Los Angeles landmark building best known for it ground floor tenant, the Grand Central Market, the City's largest and oldest open air market.

[edit] Description

Grand Central MarketDesigned in the Beaux Arts style, the Homer Laughlin Building was the fifth building in the United States, and the first building west of Chicago, to use concrete floors.

The Grand Central Market is an open stall bazaar that extends along the ground floor of the Homer Laughlin Building from Broadway to Hill Street. Over 40 merchants can be found selling everything from produce to ice cream.

[edit] History
Built by retired Ohio entrepreneur Homer Laughlin (founder of the Homer Laughlin China Company), the Homer Laughlin Building was the Los Angeles's first fireproofed, steel-reinforced structure. The building was originally built in 1897 and was further expanded through to Hill Street in 1905 under a design by architect Harrison Albright. The original building was built in the Beaux Arts style, but subsequent modifications drastically changed its appearance including the addition of a tile facade in the 1960s which hid the second story windows. At one time the building served as an office for the great American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Opening in 1917, the Grand Central Market occupies the ground floor of the Homer Laughlin Building. The location was chosen because of its proximity to the Angels Flight Railway allowing for easy access to the well to do citizens of Bunker Hill.

Along with the attached Million Dollar Theater Building, the Homer Laughlin Building and the Grand Central Market underwent a major renovation in the 1990s under the direction of developer Ira Yellin and architect Brenda Levin. As part of the restoration residential units were added creating one downtown Los Angeles's first true mixed use developments in decades.

Grand Central Market General Manager Filomena Eriman adds, "Ethnicity has changed. The population and the merchants have changed also. It’s now, we have more Hispanic merchants and customers are eighty to ninety percent Spanish."

Remembering AA Flight 191

Remembering AA Flight 191

On May 25, 1979, American Airlines Flight 191 bound for Los Angeles from Chicago O'Hare International Airport crashed in this field located on Touhy Avenue, less than 1/4 of a mile from Elmhurst Road, a few hundred feet from runway 32R where it had taken off. The DC-10 lost the left engine which tore away hydraulics from the wing slats which then caused the plane to heave dramatically to the left and plummet (almost cartwheel-style) into the ground. 271 passengers and crew were killed as well as two persons on the ground. The plane burst into a ball of fire and smoke that could be seen from downtown Chicago.

Cherry Ames Flight Nurse: Book 5 (Bk. 5)

Cherry Ames Flight Nurse: Book 5 (Bk. 5)

Cherry Ames is back, just as you remember her! The books are just as you remember them, retaining the same look, feel, and sense of adventure and patriotism as when they were first published. With fully illustrated color covers and a soft-finished hardcover format just like the originals, these books will transport you back to the days when you were reading about this spunky young nurse. Series editor and registered nurse Harriet Forman was inspired by, and remains a devoted fan of, Cherry Ames: "...I was going to follow in her footsteps and become a nurse--nothing else would do."
The United States is still fighting World War II. Cherry Ames is still an Army Nurse, this time aloft--as a flight nurse. Cherry is reunited with her corpsman Bunce--the two of them are in sole charge of ferrying severely wounded men out of the battlefield and to the nearest Army hospital. Much to Pilot Wade Cooper's chagrin, he has been taken off bomber duty to fly the wounded to safety--until Cherry makes him see otherwise. Off duty, the nurses "adopt" 6-year-old Muriel Grainger, who has known nothing but war in her short life, and whose mother has been killed by the Germans. Her father is often out on mysterious errands that cause some to label him a "spy." Cherry makes it her risky business to find out if this is truth or rumor.
Springer Publishing Company is delighted to be bringing Helen Wells's beloved heroine back into print for a new generation of younger readers (as well as a host of nostalgic older ones). The books are available as beautifully rendered facsimile hardcover editions and in boxed sets of four.

Kenya luxury safari and beach vacation

Kenya luxury safari and beach vacation

Kenya luxury safari and beach vacation

Your safari starts at Amboseli National park, at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The view of the Amboseli plains, with elephants moving below the snow-capped peaks of Africa’s highest mountain, is one of the most photographed vistas in Africa. A network of swamps and wetlands ensure excellent game viewing year round. There are 425 species of recorded bird and 56 mammal species in the park, including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, hippo, black rhino, Maasai giraffe, gerenuk and zebra. A photographer's paradise!

You will continue your journey to Campi ya Kanzi, which lies within the Kuku Group Ranch. The indigenous Maasai are still the landlords, making it one of the few last untouched areas of Africa. Connecting three national parks (Chyulu, Tsavo and Amboseli), the property is home to a vast wildlife and birdlife population. The altitude ranges from 3,000 to 6,900 feet, so the land includes a number of different habitats hence the biodiversity is extremely rich. Habitats range from the grasslands of the savanna to green river woodlands and cool mountain forests.

Along with your game drives and walking safaris, you will learn about the Maasai lifestyle, about their land, their culture and their beliefs. As mentioned, because Campi ya Kanzi is owned by the local Maasai community, you are guaranteed to enjoy ecotourism in its purest form and play an active role in the conservation of the land and of the Maasai culture.

Your next destination, Tsavo National park, is one of the world's largest game sanctuaries, covering an area of more than 20,000 sq. km. Tsavo is a combination of dramatic escarpment landscapes with the raw, untamed flavor of one of Africa's great wilderness areas. After your safari you will immerse yourself in the warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean at a small private resort. A very special hideaway, where you can simply relax and get yourself pampered with various spa treatments or you can join one of the many activities offered, like diving, sailing, deep sea fishing, kite boarding or horseback riding.

How this vacation makes a difference
Community
The Satao Elerai project is a community project that has been a long time in the making. The project has been a concerted effort between the Satao Elerai, The African Wildlife Foundation and The Elerai community. The concept is to provide a sustainable income from tourism for the Masai community in the area and to try and ensure that it is in the communities interest to protect the wildlife for generations to come. Amboseli has been a location where human-wildlife conflict has been an issue for many years, and it is projects like these that can over time ensure that communities start to benefit from wildlife and to ensure they invest in protecting and securing their future for their own benefit.

For each guest accommodated at Campi ya Kanzi for one night, $30 is set apart for the Maasai community. The money is spent on reimbursement of animal damages, education through scholarships awarded on merit and to those who are too poor to afford education, school supplies and teacher salaries, basic medical facilities and medicines and new infrastructures, such as schoolrooms, toilets and dispensaries. Guests also play an active part in the trust, as the $100 conservation fee charged per day goes toward some of the trust activities, such as employment of game scouts to make sure there is no poaching, no water courses diversion, no bush fire and no illegal

CAUDRON G-4

CAUDRON G-4

Gaston and Rene Caudron were among the earliest aircraft manufacturers in France. After building and testing a few original designs in 1909 and early in 1910, the brothers established a flight training school at Crotoy and an aircraft factory at Rue in 1910. The first factory-produced Caudron was the type A4, a 35-horsepower Anzani-powered tractor biplane in which the pilot sat completely exposed behind the rear spar of the lower wing. The next major Caudron design, the type B, was the first to feature the abbreviated fuselage/pilot nacelle, characteristic of many later Caudron aircraft. It was powered by a 70-horsepower Gnome or 60-horsepower Anzani engine mounted in the front of the nacelle with the pilot immediately behind. Although a tractor, the tail unit of the type B was supported by booms extending from the trailing edge of the wings, an arrangement more commonly featured on pusher aircraft. Lateral control was accomplished with wing warping. The type B established the basic configuration of Caudron designs through the G.4 model.

The first of the well-known Caudron G series aircraft appeared in 1912. Initially designed as a trainer, the type G was developed into the G.2 by the outbreak of the First World War, and saw limited military service in 1914 as single and two-seat versions. By that time the Caudron factory had been relocated to Lyon, where an improved version, designated the G.3, was being produced in significant numbers. Soon a second factory was opened at Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris, to meet military demand for the airplane. The G.3 was primarily a two-seat aircraft, but a few were converted to single-seat versions. They were powered variously by 80-horsepower Le Rhone or Gnome rotary engines or a 90-horsepower Anzani radial. A total of 2,450 G.3s were built, including a small number built under license in Britain and Italy.

The Caudron G.4 was a larger, twin-engined version of the G.3, powered by two 80-horsepower Le Rhones or 100-horsepower Anzanis. The Anzani-powered Caudron G.4s served mostly as training aircraft. Some of the Anzani-powered G.4s, but not all, had their engines set up to turn in opposite directions to balance the torque of the whirling propellers. All the Le Rhone-powered Caudrons had both engines rotating in the same direction, clockwise from the pilot's orientation. Also, the two vertical tail surfaces of the G.3 were increased to four on the G.4. The twin-engined configuration increased the range of the Caudron and provided a location for a forward-firing machine gun, typically a Hotchkiss or Lewis, although other types were also used. To protect against attacks from behind, some G.4s were fitted with an additional gun mounted on the top of the upper wing and pointed rearward, but this proved to be ineffective and it was frequently removed from operational aircraft. A number of G.4s had a second gun mounted immediately in front of the pilot on the deck of the nacelle (such as on the NASM Caudron). But more often the pilot and observer simply carried hand-held weapons to respond to attacks from the rear. Some G.4s carried a camera for high-altitude reconnaissance.

The prototype G.4 first flew in March 1915, and 1,358 were built in three major versions: the Caudron G.4A2 for reconnaissance, the G.4B2 for bombing, and the G.4E2 for training. The A2 had a wireless set for artillery spotting missions; the B2 could carry up to 100 kg (220 lb) of bombs; and the E2 had dual controls for instruction. A special armored version of the G.4, designated the G.4IB, was deployed to the top French units, the "B" representing Blindage, the French word for armor. In addition to reconnaissance, bombing, and training, the Caudron G.4 also sometimes served as a long-range escort to other bomber aircraft.

By 1916, the G.4 was replacing the G.3 in most Caudron squadrons. Extensively used as a bomber during the first half of 1916, its deployment in that role was severely reduced by the fall of that year. The Caudron's relative slow speed and inability to defend itself from the rear made it increasingly vulnerable to fighter attack as German air defense improved. But Caudrons continued to be widely used as reconnaissance aircraft well into 1917. By early 1918 virtually all Caudron aircraft still in use were relegated to training duties. In addition to the French, Caudrons were used extensively by British and Italian units, and a few were used by the Russians and the Belgians. Ten Caudron G.4s were sold to the United States in November 1917 and transferred to the U.S. Air Service's 2nd Air Instruction Center at Tours. Used exclusively as trainers, none of these Caudrons saw operational service with American units.

The Caudron G.4 was in many respects a pre-war design, with its wing-warping lateral control, light structure, and limited visibility. Yet it has great significance as an early light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. It was a principal type used when these critic

    flight time
  • The time you have spent, in an hour-to-hour ratio, hooping in your life. You may or may not have been practicing tricks. Any time you spend interacting with your hoop counts, even if the hoop is not spinning.

  • That portion of the trip actually spent in the air. For billing purposes this definition is generally strict and only applies from moment of lift-off to moment of touch-down.

flight time arrivals - Classic Kennedy

Classic Kennedy

Classic Kennedy

Just in case you thought Nigel Kennedy--fresh from his Hendrix tribute album--had left the classical music repertoire for good, think again. On Classic Kennedy, the fiddler is situated with the English Chamber Orchestra in a program that spans from Bach to Satie. (Yes, you also get a Joni Mitchell tune; "Scarborough Fair"; and the fiddler's own forgettable "Melody in the Wind," too.) The sequencing is a bit disjointed--the summer storm from The Four Seasons is followed by Massenet's blissful "Meditation" from Thais--and Kennedy's performances range from good to fair. The English Chamber Orchestra does an admirable job on these diverse works (it deserves a lot of credit here), but it'll be up to the listener to decide whether he or she wants to hear "Air on the G String" followed by Kennedy's version of "Danny Boy." As with most Kennedy discs, you'll either love it or hate it. --Jason Verlinde

Project 365 #363: 291209 Delayed Arrival

Project 365 #363: 291209 Delayed Arrival

Ah, my favourite place - I'm back in Manchester Airport again!

I shouldn't complain - the journey was trouble free and the arrivals area in Terminal 1 is absolutely superb.

We've got visiting Finns! Laura's Mum and Sister are over for New Year. Both surprisingly and annoyingly, the flight was delayed. It left Helsinki Vantaa 45 minutes late and arrived in Manchester 34 minutes late. This was apparently something to do with a big delay on transfer luggage. There seemed to be a lot of Chinese people on the flight (not unusual once you understand the context) so I'm sure some of it was theirs.

The real kicker...the roads were quieter than I thought and the baggage reclaim took a little longer than I thought. This meant that I was parked for 67 minutes. In Manchester Airport speak that translates to a ring stinging six quid! I could park in Liverpool One for less than that!

Ah well...easier on the way back. :) And yikes...by the time they go home I'll have finished this 365! :D

Unlocking the Gateway to Flight: The Keys to the Success of the Wright Brothers

Unlocking the Gateway to Flight: The Keys to the Success of the Wright Brothers

Unlocking the Gateway to Flight: The Keys to the Success of the Wright Brothers tells the fascinating story of how two remarkable brothers realized mankind's age-old dream of flight. In crystal-clear prose it chronicles, step-by-step, how patience, the scientific method, inspired genius, and incredible concentration changed the world forever. The book covers the unique role the entire Wright family played in the development of these two young men, contributing greatly to their eventual success and notoriety.
Neither Orville, nor Wilbur held a high school diploma; both had only modest means. Yet in just four short years they learned the secrets of flight that had evaded even the most famous, the best-educated, and the most heavily-financed scientists and engineers for centuries. The principles they discovered a century ago still apply to every aircraft built today.
Beautifully designed by Dayton artist Bill Patterson, of Patterson Graphics, and liberally illustrated with photographs and diagrams, many from the Wrights' archives, this casebound, commemorative edition features 16 additional, full-color pages highlighting the centennial celebrations of December 17, 2003, in Kitty Hawk, NC. This special edition includes exclusive photos not seen in the softcover version of the exciting reenactment of the first flight on that historic day.
Available to libraries and non-profit organizations at a special discounted rate.

Key To The Highway

Key To The Highway

I got the key to the highway,
Billed out and bound to go.
I'm gonna leave here running,
Walking is most too slow.

I'm going back to the border
Where I'm better known.
Becuase you have done nothing,
Drove a good man away from home.

When the moon peeks over the mountains
I'll be on my way.
I got to roam this old highway
'Til the break of day.

I got the key to the highway,
Billed out and bound to go.
I got to leave here running,
Walking is most too slow.

Oh give me one more kiss mama
And I must say goodbye.
I got to roam this old highway
Until the day I die.

Flight to Cedar Key, Florida

Flight to Cedar Key, Florida

Cedar Key is one of the oldest ports in the state, and when Florida's first railroad connected it to the east coast, it became a major supplier of seafood and timber products to the northeast. Today it has become a haven for artists and writers who find the unspoiled environment inspirational to their work.
Federally protected sanctuaries, the Cedar Keys form a chain of barrier islands ideally suited to a vast range of migratory and shore birds, including the elusive white pelican, roseate spoonbill and bald eagle. The variety of natural habitats, from salt marshes to Indian shell mounds, makes this truly a nature lover's paradise.

MERRY X=MESS 2010

MERRY X=MESS 2010

This CHRISTMAS DAY the SFCRONCICLE reports that there are still passengers STRANDED at the airport in PARIS. This after over a week of horrible storms that shut down most of Europe's airports & transportation venues.

Luckily, ADDA was able to get out of that quagmire very easily.

So,what has ADDA bring out of such an experience? It pays to be thankful. As in, ADDA is thankful that he was thankful to the BRITISH AIRLINES ticket clerk who got him and his mom out of PARIS in a breeze.

Four days into the havoc, last Tuesday, for that matter, ADDA and thousands of upset travelers packed CDG airport. Some of those passengers were STILL at the airport for 2, 3 and FOUR days.

ADDA had to rebook his tickets, so he got into the shortest line and patiently waited for his turn. Oddly, it appeared once the stranded person in front of him made it to the ticket clerk, the passenger then proceeded to make demands upon the overworked ticket clerks.

So, after waiting about an hour in a 20-person line, which by the way increased to about 200 within minutes, ADDA walked up to the rebooking ticket clerk, and patiently waited a few more minutes before the clerk even looked up in acknowledgment.

When the clerk made eye-contact, ADDA's first words were,

"Thank you very much for trying to help me. "

The clerk didn't bat an eye, nor break her stone wall face. She took my cancelled flight ticket, and started to pound away at the computer.

Not once did I dare interrupt her mission.

After about 25 minutes, she looked up with a very, very slight hint of a smile, and handed me BUSINESS CLASS seats out of PARIS for THAT DAY.

The young man behind me, who overheard this incredible stroke of luck, reached over, pointed his finger at the tickets, and in a VERY loud voice said, "WOW! I need to get on that SAME flight! Book me on that flight!'

In which the ticket clerk's ever slight smile dissappeared, she turned back to stone, looked back down at her computer, and, then she COLDLY, and very s l o w l y, said with a slight hiss, as if she took extreme enjoyment of the sound of her piercing of her icy words,

"T h o s e.... w e r e ......t h e ....l a s t ......s e a t s."

With the hundreds who were still stuck in CDG from the previous four days with no hope for a flight, and with current reports that situation has not improved much at all, ADDA is EXTREMELLY thankful that I was kind and, well, thankful to the clerk...

Sincere gratefulness and honesty works!

So, if there comes a time in one's life when it appears that one is snowbound, stranded with no hope of an escape, and one is completely surrounded by anger & dispair; please remember to stay centered, calm, and just be thankful for all the things that you do have in life.

Things will get better....

ADDA would like to wish you and yours wonderful Holiday Season and a great 2011 ! Thank you so much for being a dear friend!

Big hugs,

MK lost her passport in Laos, we'd traveled with other Poi spinners through Laos for the previous few weeks, and that after spending a few weeks in Pai. Losing ones passport is unfortunate, but losing ones passport, all your money and bank cards as well as your paper airline ticket is really really bad. To make it worse there is no Canadian Embassy in Laos.

Over the next week we would spend 4 days shuffling between Lao bureaucratic offices, the tourist police and the Australian Embassy to get her an emergency travel document, a new entry visa and a new exit visa. This was all so that could leave Laos and go directly to Bangkok to get to the Canadian embassy to go through the process there of getting a new proper passport there. We cheated a little and after crossing the border spent one day with a family her sister had lived as part of an exchange program many years ago, but then we promptly hopped on an overnight train to Bangkok. We spent the day in Bangkok running between the train station, the Canadian Embassy, the Air Canada office and travel agents on Khao San Road. At 6pm that same evening we boarded an overnight bus to Surat Thani. A few hours after arriving in Surat Thani we got on a 4 hour ferry ride to Koh Phangan. Then a half hour cab ride across Koh Phangan on some of the steepest and most curvy roads anywhere, and finally a 15 minute taxi boat ride to get to Haad Tien Beach where we were to met other friends from Pai. A long search finally the house they were staying on...

If anyone ever deserved a swing hung from a coconut palm on a quiet tropical beach, she did... for me I got a nice long swim in that blue water...

For the record, the swing is actually on Haad Why Nam, the beach and cove next to Haad Tien.

This dark comedy from 1989 was a good showcase for Winona Ryder, playing a high school girl brought into a clique of bitchy classmates (all named Heather), and Christian Slater, doing his early Jack Nicholson thing. While Ryder's character mulls over the consequences of giving up one set of friends for another, her association with a new boy (Slater) in school turns out to have deadly consequences. Director Michael Lehmann turned this unusual film into something more than another teen-death flick. There is real wit and sharp satire afoot, and the very fusion of horror and comedy is provocative in itself. Heathers remains a kind of benchmark in contemporary cinema for bringing surreal intelligence into Hollywood films. --Tom Keogh

Planet Earth: Limited Edition [Blu-ray]

The new, 6-disc Planet Earth Special Edition is also available in this special, limited, numbered collector’s edition globe package! All six discs, plus a set of 4 exclusive art cards featuring some of the most stunning images from the series are housed in a sturdy, weighted globe, numbered for greater collectability. Available with both the DVD and Blu-ray. Planet Earth took the world by storm when it originally aired. It garnered uniformly glowing reviews, won four Emmy Awards, including Best Nonfiction Series and Best Cinematography, and its longevity on the best-seller list is legend. Now, with the addition of all new commentary and new bonus programs, and this totally unique collectible package, you can relive this incredible experience all over again! In this truly special, limited collector’s edition, prepare to be overwhelmed again by the beauty and majesty of Planet Earth.

As of its release in early 2007, Planet Earth is quite simply the greatest nature/wildlife series ever produced. Following the similarly monumental achievement of The Blue Planet: Seas of Life, this astonishing 11-part BBC series is brilliantly narrated by Sir David Attenborough and sensibly organized so that each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.) until the entire planet has been magnificently represented by the most astonishing sights and sounds you'll ever experience from the comforts of home. The premiere episode, "From Pole to Pole," serves as a primer for things to come, placing the entire series in proper context and giving a general overview of what to expect from each individual episode. Without being overtly political, the series maintains a consistent and subtle emphasis on the urgent need for ongoing conservation, best illustrated by the plight of polar bears whose very behavior is changing (to accommodate life-threatening changes in their fast-melting habitat) in the wake of global warming--a phenomenon that this series appropriately presents as scientific fact. With this harsh reality as subtext, the series proceeds to accentuate the positive, delivering a seemingly endless variety of natural wonders, from the spectacular mating displays of New Guinea's various birds of paradise to a rare encounter with Siberia's nearly-extinct Amur Leopards, of which only 30 remain in the wild.
That's just a hint of the marvels on display. Accompanied by majestic orchestral scores by George Fenton, every episode is packed with images so beautiful or so forcefully impressive (and so perfectly photographed by the BBC's tenacious high-definition camera crews) that you'll be rendered speechless by the splendor of it all. You'll see a seal struggling to out-maneuver a Great White Shark; swimming macaques in the Ganges delta; massive flocks of snow geese numbering in the hundreds of thousands; an awesome night-vision sequence of lions attacking an elephant; the Colugo (or "flying lemur"--not really a lemur!) of the Philippines; a hunting alliance of fish and snakes on Indonesia's magnificent coral reef; the bioluminescent "vampire squid" of the deep oceans... these are just a few of countless highlights, masterfully filmed from every conceivable angle, with frequent use of super-slow-motion and amazing motion-controlled time-lapse cinematography, and narrated by Attenborough with his trademark combination of observational wit and informative authority. The result is a hugely entertaining series that doesn't flinch from the predatory realities of nature (death is a constant presence, without being off-putting). At a time when the multiple threats of global warming should be obvious to all, let's give Sir David the last word, from the closing of Planet Earth's final episode: "We can now destroy or we can cherish--the choice is ours." --Jeff Shannon

national flight tracker - Boxer

Boxer

Boxer

The follow-up to 2005's "Alligator" is filled with lush arrangements and sees the band incorporating new instrumentation and expanded musical elements such as piano, trumpet, and more prominent background vocals.

With Boxer, the National have reached four albums into their increasingly lauded career, never hurrying the tempo, never over-reaching in volume or instrumental density. Instead, the quintet's balanced on a pin, emotionally austere, if not utterly downhearted, finding brilliantly dusky ways for Matt Berninger's lovelorn voice to mesh with a pair of unobtrusive guitars and, here, an occasional phalanx of piano, horns, and strings. The tunes roll off slowly, Berninger's lyrics hugging the instruments with a sad brawn, rough-hewn as the drums and bass toy with angularity (try "Mistaken for Strangers," for one) but end up woven by that voice. Drummer Bryan Devendorf presses the songs forward repeatedly, as on "Start a War," where he gently thumps the time as the acoustic guitars frame and dot the melody, coalescing as the drums starkly chisel the melody. Nary a distortion pedal is harmed on Boxer, giving the National a magnetism so forlorn that you can't stop listening. --Andrew Bartlett

1:100 Macross VF-1L KWS "Valkyrie" - German Luftwaffe Norm '72/"Zitronenfalter"/JG71 paint scheme

1:100 Macross VF-1L KWS

Germany-based Valkyrie '27?85' from SVF-71/JG71 "Richthofen" passes Heligoland in low flight after shooting training out on the North Sea, back to its home near Wittmund.

With retro-camouflaged Valkyries popping up in official sourcebooks (like Su-27, U.S. Navy or Royal Navy derivates) and some national identity in mind, I wondered what a German Valkyrie would look like? Well, this here is the (quite flashy) result! The idea came when I recently got hands on the brand new WAVE Ma.K. 'Snake-Eye' kit - the box art shows the fighting suit with very special decorative markings: "tulip" wedges.

For those interested, here's an excursion about the story behind it:
The 'black tulip' markings have a real historic heritage from WWII. They had been the personal markings of German pilot ace Erich Hartmann on his Messerschmidt Bf-109 fighter machines. The characterstic markings were painted on the motor cowl, just behind the propeller spinner, which used to be black, too.
After the war (and 352 air combat victories!), when Germany began re-building its defensive forces under the pressure of the Cold War, Erich Hartmann returned from Russian imprisonment, joined German Luftwaffe's forces again and received in 1960 command over Germany's first jet fighter squadron, the JG 71 "Richthofen", which was initially equiped with CL-13 Mk. 6, Canadian-built F-86F-40 'Sabres'.
Consequently, besides the glamorous "Richthofen" name of the squadron, JG71's F-86 would sport the 'black tulip' trademark of their commander around their air intakes and on the fins, paired with bright red or yellow contrast fields. The tulips would, with the advent of the F-104G 'Starfighter' in the mid 60ies, disappear again, though.

But back to the little Valkyrie: The kit is actually a bastard. I did not have a single seater left in stock, so I bashed a VF-1D two-seater with the cockpit and wings of a single-seater Gerwalk kit. This caused little problem, since these kits have almost 100% matching 'interfaces'. The Gerwalk cockpit just differs slightly in proportions and lacks a landing gear compartment. The wings have no punches/adapters for weapons underneath, and the holes for the wings' sweeping mechanism are a bit larger than on the Fighter kits.
Beyond that, the Valkyrie was - as usual - built almost right out of the box, with typical minor details added to the exterior like some antennae, plus some interior things like a pilot figure and a HUD.

In oder to set this Valkyrie a bit apart from the anime versions, I gave it an "L" designation (for "Luftwaffe", the only plausible suffix I could find which was not occupied yet...). A scratch-built laser spot tracker (similar to the Pave Penny system) was mounted under the Valkyrie's front as part of a domestic KWS package ("Kampfwertsteigerung", a German term and abbreviation for military vehicle upgrades). This package also includes subtle details like passive radar sensors (fins, front, legs) and flare dispensers (legs), Small things, but they add some grit and differentiate it from standard anime models. The wings were left empty, in order not to compromise the wonderful lines and keep the kit's focus on its unique livery.

The basic paint scheme is typical for German jets like the F-4F, F-104G or Alpha Jet in the 1960-80 era. AFAIK, it was officially called "Norm '72", but it had the inofficial nickname of "Zitronenfalter" ("Brimstone Butterfly"). It already looks retro due to the angular design, but proves highly effective at medium heights over typical German countryside or over coast line areas. Today it would be sold as "fractal", but the design's origins reach back into the pre-WWII time.
The authentic colors of the Norm '72 scheme are RAL 6014 ("Gelboliv", a dark, brownish olive drab tone; Humbrol's 108 or Revell's 46 come close), RAL 7012 ("Basaltgrau", similar to the Bristish Dark Sea Grey or FS36118) for above and RAL 7001 for the undersides ("Silbergrau", a unique light grey with a metallic hue).

For the small Valkyrie kit , though, I settled for different, lighter shades, because the original tones are pretty murky and they'd rather conceal the wicked camouflage pattern. The Gelboliv became the much lighter 1711 from Testors (simple Olive drab, FS34087), and for the dark Basaltgrau, Humbrol's 27 (Matt Sea Grey) was used. The obscure undersides' RAL 7001 was simulated with a 1:1 mix of Humbrol's 11 and 34 (Silver and Flat White).

While the choice of tones was basically O.K., the olive drab turned out to be way too light after application. The contrast with Humbrol's 27 was weak, so Humbrol 108 would be recommended for a more authentic look, even though weathering would bleach the real colors. But, heck, we are doing anime here! Therefore, I left it as it was.
When the basic camouflage was done, though, I found that something was missing to r

Alligator

These five Cincinnati friends recorded two albums for Brassland before signing to Beggars Banquet. Their last effort, "Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers", was touted as one of the year's best by Rolling Stone and other magazines. On "Alligator", Matt Berninger's potent baritone still intones about matters fraught, funny, and sad; about record collections, missing persons, and medium-sized American hearts. "Startling and subtly affecting, The National creeps in like the killer in a bleak gothic novel. Strings tremble, hearts break, and each smoldering song brings a harrowing tale of new pities"--Magnet.

On their third recording, the National strikes a delicate balance between light and dark, fast and slow, American and British. While their sound is undeniably tinged with darkness, it isn't gloomy or depressing. This impression is mostly due to Matt Berninger's deep baritone, which brings to mind such sensitive, but manly Brit vocalists as Scott Walker and Stuart Staples of the Tindersticks. The National, however, are American. Formed in Brooklyn in 1999, the quintet hails from Cincinatti and doesn't sound much like a New York Band (Interpol, the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc.). Instead, they could be Midwestern or even Canadian in the way they combine alt-country, chamber-pop, and post-punk angst, like Toronto's Royal City or Montreal's Arcade Fire. Often compared to Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits, the National's music is actually faster-paced and has a lighter, almost jaunty touch. In other words: they rock. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
