    air filter
  • a filter that removes dust from the air that passes through it

  • A particulate air filter is a device composed of fibrous materials which removes solid particulates such as dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria from the air.

  • A device for filtering particles of dust, soot, etc., from the air passing through it, esp. one protecting the air inlet of an internal combustion engine

  • (air filters) Adhesive filters made of metal or various fibers that are coated with an adhesive liquid to which particles of lint and dust adhere. These filters will remove as much as 90% of the dirt if they do not become clogged. The more common filters are of the throwaway or disposable type.

    compressor
  • An instrument or device for compressing something

  • An electrical amplifier that reduces the dynamic range of a signal

  • a mechanical device that compresses gasses

  • Compressor is a video and audio media compression and encoding application for use with Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio on Mac OS X. It can be used with Qmaster for clustering.

  • A machine used to supply air or other gas at increased pressure, e.g., to power a gas turbine

  • A device that produces pressure, such as a gas compressor that produces pressurized gas; A devices that squeezes (compresses); A device that reduces the dynamic range of an audio signal

The key to efficiency is based on compressing the element axially and forcing it to expand radially against the tapered walls of the housing. This forces the air to pass between the tightly compressed layers along the length of the element, creating a true depth filter versus the conventional method of passing the air through layers of media. Using this unique method of filtration creates a labyrinth of sub-micronic openings from the interlocking fibers on the fabric surfaces, entrapping particles as small as .01 microns.

Amtrak locomotive # 254, an EMD E-8 formerly belonging to the SCL, is followed by an E-8 locomotive #331, formerly belonging to the Union Pacific, are located in the SCL railroad yard at Saint Petersburg, Florida, 1973. The locomotives are being serviced for the next morning departure on the Amtrak Champion. The locomotives will be operated to Washington, D.C., with the train continuing on to New York City. This railroad yard and shop facility was originally the property of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and at this time was operated by the Seaboard Coast Line. The maintenance, repair and service performed on the locomotives include the following areas: headlights and all auxiliary lights, air horns, re-fueling, cooling water, lube oil, generator loading check, electrical system check, traction motors, wheels, bearings, fuel filter and air filter cleaning, check batteries, air compressors, air brake function, controls and electrical cabinet. The locomotives would also receive a wash job prior to departing. The old and historic railroad yard and shops are now long gone, as the yard was mostly shut down after Amtrak discontinued their operations into Pinellas County during the the late 1980's, and the yard and shops were torn down and removed over the following years.

This Amtrak EMD SDP40F locomotive is being maintained and serviced by SCL Railroad Electrician Charlie Bruorton, as the shop foreman Joe looks on at the SCL (former ACL) railroad yard in Saint Petersburg, Florida, during 1975. Prior to Joe becoming shop foreman, Mr. Heart was the shop foreman for as many years as I can remember, going back to the early 50's and probably into the 40's. The duties of an railroad electrician in regard to locomotives is naturally to check out the electrical systems, controls and relays, but also the job expanded in later years to include checking the diesel prime mover, adjusting the governor, cleaning oil filters, fuel filters, air filters, repairing lights, air horns, air compressors, fuel pumps, speed indicators and recorders plus many other auxiliary items. At larger shops they replace traction motors and main wiring as required along with other major electrical components and systems. They also performed load tests and air brake tests.
