FIAT 125 (1967-1972)

FIAT 125 (1967-1972)

The Fiat 125 is a large family car introduced by Fiat in 1967 and produced by them until 1972. Derivatives were built under license outside Italy until the 1990s. As launched the car was unusual in blending saloon car passenger accommodation with sports car performance, a combination which would be more widely adopted by the European volume auto-makers in the decade ahead.

The body

The floor pan was virtually unchanged from that of the longer variant of the outgoing model, the Fiat 1300/1500, and the chassis used was the same as the Fiat 1300/1500. The body was a slightly lengthened development of the Fiat 124: both models shared the same passenger compartment and doors, but the 125's rear seat was set slightly further back, reflecting the 2505 mm wheel-base, inherited from the Fiat 1500 and over 8 cm (3 inches) longer than that of the 124.

Engine and running gear

The new car's engine engine was based on the one fitted in the Fiat 124 Sport: a 1608 cc DOHC unit with 90 bhp. The 125 was equipped with a Solex carburettor. The car was fitted with an alternator, reflecting the twin headlights and the increasing number of energy intensive electrical components appearing on cars at this time. Other noteworthy features included the elecromagnetic cooling fan clutch.

Developments

In 1968 the 125S ("Special") was added to the range, with 100 bhp (from a modified cylinder head, camshaft, inlet manifold and Weber carburettor) and, unusually at this time, a five speed gearbox.[4] A variety of other improvements were made including improved trim and styling. The 125 was praised when new for its handling and dynamics.
The Special was facelifted in 1970 using pretty much the same trim as the 125S, but both front and rear lights were new, although based on the one's used on the 125. A three-speed automatic transmission also became available as an option.

Variations

A variant (125 T) was made by the Fiat importers in New Zealand, Torino Motors, for motorsport use in the annual 6 hour production car race (Benson and Hedges 500). The 125T has larger valves, two twin Weber DCOH or Dell'Orto 40DHLA carburettors (depending on availability), modified camshafts and a higher compression ratio to produce around 125 bhp (93 kW), lowered and stiffer suspension. All featured Ward alloy wheels and were painted bright yellow. Sources for production figures quote that between 84 and 89 were modified. Reasons for stopping production are sometimes given that Fiat headquarters found out and stopped this venture.[citation needed] However a more likely scenario is that selling the required 200 cars in a market that only sold 1000 Fiats in total each year was a tall order.
Other versions were built by Moretti, who made the 125GS 1.6 with styling similar to the Fiat Dino Spider. Zagato made the 125Z; Savio, a 125 Coupe and 125 Station Wagon; Pininfarina, a 125 Executive; and Vignale produced the Samantha, a two door coupe with pop-up headlights.

Foreign production

Production by Fiat in Italy ceased in 1972 when the Fiat 132 was introduced, a total of 603,877 cars having been built.

A licence copy was also produced in Poland by the Fabryka Samochodow Osobowych (FSO) from 1967 until 1991, under the brand Polski Fiat as the Polski Fiat 125p, and later as the FSO 1500, FSO 1300, or FSO 125p.
It was a somewhat simplified variation of the Fiat car, with outdated 1300 cc or 1500 cc engines and mechanicals from the Fiat 1300/1500. Polish cars differed in details from Italian ones, most visible were four round headlights instead of square ones. This model was also available as an estate (the Polski Fiat 125p Kombi) and a pickup.

Yugoslavia
The Zastava 125 Zastava produced identical to the original model and Fiat also available Giardinetta. Available versions were called 125 PZ with 1295 or 1481 cc engines.

Egypt
In Egypt production went on until 1983, with the Fiat 125 remaining one of the most sought-after cars due to its strength and reliability.

Argentina
In Argentina the 125 was built from 1972 to 1982, intially by Fiat-Concord and later Sevel. In addition to the 4-door sedan version, a station wagon (called "Familiar"), a pickup (called "Multicarga", a unique Argentine design) were built. There was also a coupe called 125 Sport with the same mechanics than the sedan, but based on the Fiat Coupe 1500 Vignale.

Colombia
A few copies were made of Italian 125 and was quickly replaced by Polish 125p better suited to the local market.

Chile
A car that was manufactured almost equal to the Fiat 125 Special "restyling in 1970.

Morocco
SOMACA (Societe Marocaine de Construction Automobile) assembled 125 in Casablanca.

The First Day of a New Congress: A Guide to Proceedings on the House Floor - CRS Report

This report focuses on the floor activities of the House during its first formal session in a new Congress, and serves as a guide for those participating in or watching these proceedings.

The House is not a continuing body. It ends at the conclusion of each two-year Congress and must reconstitute itself at the beginning of the next Congress. Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution sets terms for Members of the House at two years. The House must choose its Speaker and officers and determine the chamber’s internal rules every two years.

The Constitution mandates that Congress convene at noon on January 3, unless it has earlier passed a law designating a different day. Although no officers have been elected when the House first convenes, some officers from the previous Congress perform certain functions.

The House follows a well-established first day routine of electing and swearing in the Speaker, administering the oath of office to its Members, electing and swearing in its administrative officers, and adopting its rules of procedure. It also establishes its daily hour of meeting.

On opening day, the House usually adopts resolutions assigning its Members to serve on committees. This process often extends for several more weeks. The committee assignment process occurs primarily within the party groups—the Republican Conference and the Democratic Caucus. Assignments cannot be considered on the House floor until both of these groups have adopted rules governing committee assignments.

Other routine organizational business may also be taken up on the House floor on the first day. The Speaker usually announces his/her policies on certain floor practices; a resolution is adopted providing for a joint session of Congress to receive the President’s State of the Union Message; and often a resolution is adopted to allow a judge or a Member of Congress to administer the oath of office to Members-elect who are absent due to illness or other reasons.

Some resolutions on opening day are dependent on specific circumstances and do not occur at the beginning of each new Congress. In inaugural years, the House must adopt a resolution to authorize the use of the Capitol for the inauguration activities. At the outset of a new Congress following a presidential election, the House must also adopt a resolution providing for the counting of electoral votes for the President and Vice President of the United States by the new Congress.

“That familiar noise reaches my ears. *click* *click* *click* followed by the even more familiar scent. I realize just how stoned I am when turning over to see whose sparking seems near impossible. Within a few seconds the circle is formed again. I’m trying to remember how much I’ve smoked today, but we all knew at this point that focusing on a tiny fact like that isn’t possible. My turn to hit. I start with a small hit to see how strong the stuff actually is. Next I hit back as much as my lungs can hold. Before I even begin to exhale I can feel my fingers start to tingle. I can’t determine whether this is the pot, or if this is the copious amounts of morphine I ingested just so that I could make it through last class. Before I know it, the joint is finished and someone is pulling out the bong. Willy Bongka we call it. As I look around I realize that in a few weeks I won’t be able to come here anymore. When the rest of the leaves fall of the trees it will expose us all to the string of backyards and little children playing in them. Next thing I know, back to reality, or at least what my reality looks like. The bong is sitting in my lap; apparently it’s my turn for a hit. I ask someone to light me. After a few attempts I watch the green glow red and the thick smoke fill the glass. The bowl comes out and my lungs are hit with all the smoke. My eyes start to drop as the smoke rolls gracefully from my nose. I hear a few more clicks, but can’t open my eyes just yet. I go in for another hit as I’m cheered on by these people I call friends. Finally, the bong leaves my hands. I fumble through my tin trying to find my pipe. I load up a bowl and get it lit. I take a few tokes and pass it on. We finish up and gather our energy as we head to the next spot. Even when this intoxicated it takes no thought to follow the routine. We get to the next spot, my turn. I pull out a joint and spark it. Halfway through I have to back out. My throat hurts too much to continue. Again we leave this area of the woods and head for the next. What feels like hours later we arrive at the fort. I check my phone, amazed that it is only 5. I turn my left to see someone hitting the bong again, the routine continues here as well. We start to head home in our different directions. As I reach my house I give my eyes a few drops and head upstairs get hanged. Now it’s time for the best acting performance all day. I greet my parents and take my long awaited seat on the couch. As I sit there, I feel my legs trying to separate from me. They are slowly sinking to the floor. Next thing I know I am awoken to go to bed. As I head upstairs I feel uplifted knowing that I am far too high to even consider the knife tonight. I lay down in my bed dreading the morning. Dreading the time when reality sets in. I try to say a quick prayer before I nod off to sleep.”
- written by a very close friend of mine
We are like children, our mind is blank and our heart is yearning to be filled. We fill it with so many things, the need for love, drugs, drinking, wearing a whole bunch of make up, cutting, exercise. Everything. Anything. And through it all we even know it’s not right. “Now it’s time for the best acting performance all day” or “dreading the time when reality sets in.” Isn’t it funny how we do things that we don’t want to face afterwards.
Here’s something you should live by - if you don’t want people knowing about it, you shouldn’t be doing it.
The thing is though, we make mistakes. We do stupid things and honestly I think it’s important that we go through these things. Because only after that can we realize what we’re missing and whether or not we like who we’ve become. I’m not saying what my friend did is wrong or his lifestyle but knowing him, I know he wasn’t happy being that way.
The best part? As nostalgic as we become over our pasts, the real truth is we are children of God. Children. Kids. Young. Forgiven. Whether you have parents that make you happy or whether they hurt you or have hurt you. The fact is you have a father that will always love you no matter how many times you screw up, fall down, and scream and shout at him.
Psalm 16:1-5 “In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. Free me from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth.”
You may not hear from God right away. You many not feel him. Yet the moment you collapse into him and into the fact that you’ve done wrong I promise you your life with turn around. We ask God to come to our rescue and he never fails us because his love never neglects however you can’t stand there and expect miracles. Just like a real Father, you cannot treat him poorly and ignore his existe

the saddest part of all...

the saddest part of all...

was knowing this once rested on a child's grave. i found it just lying in the grass, lost and forlorn...
it was about that time that i decided i shouldn't intrude on this sacred place any longer...

Back in the Jeep -- we took some back roads (o, don’t think we’re big four-wheelers; our Jeep has rarely been on an unpaved road). But even paved back roads can lead to amazing discoveries. I am intriguied by cemeteries and the older the better; I always wonder about the lives I see in front of me. How did that live that dash between the year of birth and the year of death?

So imagine my delight when we ran smack into an old, overgrown mountain cemetery. Even more delightful was finding a gate open so I could enter and wander around. Top that with the place was HUGE; I’m sure I only covered a small portion of it. I definitely want to return. I didn’t do as much shooting as I would have liked because 1) it was really hot 2) I was a little afraid I might get lost and I forgot to bring my cell phone w/me (the mister stayed behind w/boo-boo) and 3) it was a little creepy – even in the middle of the day – to be there all by myself. Just me and a bunch of very old headstones, the trees, wildflowers and mountains going on forever.

Golden Gate Bridge - San Francisco, California from Fort Point [Explored]

Golden Gate Bridge - San Francisco, California from Fort Point [Explored]

Hello everyone!

Here is one from last summer. Lately I've been shooting everything in HDR and felt like I wanted to step away from that for a minute. I shot this photo about 15 minutes after sunset from the Fort Point National Historic Site. I was there for the full sunset and was shooting off multiple bracketed exposures. As things died down and I was getting ready to leave I decided to capture a few non- bracketed photos.

This one is my favorite of the series. For the most part it's SOOC... I say "for the most part" because I adjusted the clarity and contrast. I also leveled the horizon and gave a small crop.

For more info on Fort Point:
Fort Point is located at the southern side of the Golden Gate at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. This fort was completed just before the American Civil War, to defend San Francisco Bay against hostile warships. The fort is now protected as Fort Point National Historic Site, a United States National Historic Site administered by the National Park Service as a unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Golden Temple !!!!

Golden Temple !!!!

The Golden Temple Amritsar India (Sri Harimandir Sahib Amritsar) is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. Everybody, irrespective of cast, creed or race can seek spiritual solace and religious fulfilment without any hindrance. It also represents the distinct identity, glory and heritage of the Sikhs. To pen-down the philosophy, ideology, the inner and outer beauty, as well as the historical legacy of Sri Harimandir Sahib is a momentous task. It is a matter of experience rather than a of description.

Old Neptune Whitstable

Old Neptune Whitstable

The site of the Old Neptune was probably occupied by a boatyard workshop. Placed on the edge of the beach in the teeth of estuary storms and gales; the original building has long been washed away.

In 1853 the ‘Old Neptune’ beer house suffered serious structural damage when an exceptionally high tide combined with a northerly gale washed away her foundations.
Another great storm in 1883 resulted in the wrecking of several vessels awaiting repair along the shore. The Neptune, although spared this time, was used as a temporary morgue to receive the bodies of those killed in the storm.

Finally in 1897 the old wooden building was completely washed away in another great storm.
The ‘Old Neptune’ was rebuilt, using timber reclaimed from the original structure and several other cottages that had also been destroyed.

The building has warped and twisted over the years owing too its old wooden foundations, however the timber structure seems to accommodate this movement as can be seen in the window frames and sloping floor. So not down to lens distortion ;o)

John Zeller, Contractor

Here is yet more proof that George Wyman was a prolific and popular architect in Los Angeles, after designing the well-known Bradbury building. Here in St James Park he created three handsome brick apartment houses for John R Powers. Although all three are Prairie Style in form, they employ different design elemnts -- #1 has is faced with a Wright-like arched entrance; #2 has the appearance of an Italian Villa; and #3 (the latest built) has a Colonial theme.

In such a tony neighborhood, the buildings were made to look from the front like large single-family homes. They included the same amenities which could be found in any high-class home, such as: quarter-sawn oak floors, telephone hook-ups, and live-in domestic quarters. In fact, the Powers family actually lived at 2327 Scarff (#1), and often entertained the more notable (and wealthy) figures from St James Park (proper) and Chester Place. Mr. Powers was a wealthy businessman involved in the Inglewood Cemetary project and the Arizona-Utah Oil Company.

Chicago - Streeterville: John Hancock Center and Drake Hotel from Oak Street Beach

Chicago - Streeterville: John Hancock Center and Drake Hotel from Oak Street Beach

View from Oak Street Beach.

Affectionately called “Big John” by Chicagoans, John Hancock Center stands out as a bold feature of the Chicago skyline. When completed in 1969, it was just the third building in the world to be taller than 1000 feet tall (and the first outside of New York) and the first trussed-tube skyscraper ever built. The 100-story, 1,127 foot tall skyscraper has 18-story-long steel braces criss-crossing the tapering obelisk tower like stacked Xs. These braces eliminate the need for inner support beams by and allowing the skin to function as part of the tubular system, granting additional floor space for use. The building tapers on all four sides, narrowing by a total of 105 feet on the east & west sides and 65 feet on the north & south. The slope of the windows helps to reduce the feeling of vertigo for people looking out of high floors.

The Drake is one of just two United States hotels owned by Hilton International (which owns the Hilton brand outside the United States). Overlooking Lake Michigan, it was founded in 1920 in the Italian Renaissance style and soon became one of Chicago's landmark hotels, a longtime rival of the Palmer House. It has 537 bedrooms and 74 suites, a six-room Presidential Suite, several restaurants, two large ballrooms and the "Palm Court", a club-like secluded lobby.

The East Lake Shore Drive District was designed a landmark by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development on April 18, 1985.

Haiti Benefit with Daedalus Cellars in Dundee

Haiti Benefit with Daedalus Cellars in Dundee

Winery owners are generous. Not a year goes by that each isn’t asked to contribute bottles or cases to a good cause. These owners donate throughout the year – sometimes quietly; sometimes publicly with the help of their customers -- especially to charities that hold a special place in their heart.

Right now, Haiti’s urgent need for financial support to lift it out of the death, ruble and sadness caused by a devastating earthquake is tugging on everyone’s heartstrings.

Although many Oregon wineries are closed for the winter, some owners and staffers are finding ways for customers and wine club members to donate to Haitian relief funds. Special pleads are being posted on Facebook and Twitter pages like this one for Sokol Blosser Winery in Dundee. Annie Shull of Raptor Ridge Winery in Carlton posted the American Red Cross cell phone contribution number on her personal Facebook page the minute she learned about it.

A few winery owners are putting on special events to raise money. One of the most ambitious is a January 25th concert being planned by the direct sales manager of Daedalus Cellars in Dundee with the owners of The Woods, a music venue in Portland’s historic Sellwood that can accommodate 240 people. The $10 entry fee will go to Portland-based MercyCorps. “I organized the event today with the aid of Ritchie Young, one of the proprietors of The Woods,” says Sara Shaw of Daedalus Cellars, who is volunteering as a bartender at the event and donating her tips. Daedalus will be donating wine and promoting it to its customers. “We'll have three locally lauded bands playing. Because of who these bands are, we're pretty sure the show will sell out,” says Shaw.

Many winery owners, like those of Stag Hollow Wines in Yamhill and Trium Wines in Talent, are making private pledges to aid agencies like the American Red Cross, AmeriCares and MercyCorps.

“We thought about asking our wine club to donate together but decided it was a very personal issue and we would let everyone make their own decisions,” says Christy Simmons, who owns Misty Oaks Vineyard in Oakland, Oregon with her husband Steve. “Steve and I have donated to both the Red Cross and Save the Children.”

Robert Kerivan of Bridgeview Vineyards and Winery in Cave Junction and Grants Pass used to visit Haiti frequently when he owned Turks Air Cargo. "I really love the Haitian people," he says. "They really have the short end of the stick in the world today. And they've had it for the last 100 years." He gave $500 to one of his former employees of Turks Air to bring directly to Haiti. He pledges to send $500 a month.

No matter how it's given, every donation matters.

“While thousands of miles separate Oregon from the destruction and devastation in Haiti,” states Boedecker Cellar’s home page, “we want to do what little we can to reach out to those in dire need.”

Here’s a look at how you can join in the efforts:

* During the month of January, Boedecker Cellars in Portland is donating 10% of all sales through its website, wine club and tasting room to MercyCorps’ relief efforts in Haiti. “We've also set up a fundraising page on the MercyCorps site to make it quick and easy for you to donate directly to their relief efforts,” writes Athena Pappas. As for the donations, she says they are “slow and steady.”
* Robin and Danuta Pfeiffer of Pfeiffer Winery in Junction City sent out a newsletter this week encouraging wine club members to donate the price of a bottle of Pinot Gris to the American Red Cross. “If they bring their receipt to the winery, we will give a 50% discount on any bottle of white wine they purchase,” says Danuta. Also, on the floor next to the wine bar is a four-foot-tall crystal wine goblet – “I mean GIANT!" es Danuta – that customers are filling with small change that will be sent to the American Red Cross' Haitian relief effort.
* Christopher Bridge Cellars in Oregon City continues to support Doctors Without Borders and Forward Edge International, two of the relief organizations responding with teams and supplies for Haiti. Since Spring 2008, the winery has been donating 10% of the proceeds of sale of its 2006 DNP (Dona Nobis Pacem) Pinot Noir. “The needs will continue to grow and we are blessed indeed to be able to help," says owner Susanne Carlberg. Her daughter Valerie participated in a Forward Edge International mission to Nicaragua. “Since then, Valerie, also a team member at Christopher Bridge Cellars, has entered her first year of medical studies at Oregon Health Science University with hopes of continuing her humanitarian work upon graduation as a doctor of medicine,” says her proud mother.
* Marcus Goodfellow donated a case of Matello Wines to Portland's Lincoln Restaurant's fundraising for MercyCorps’ efforts for Haiti. “They are pouring the wine through the week and donating a percentage of the money,” says Goodfellow. "I think many people would really like to help out wi

The White House

The White House

The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., the house was designed by Irish-born James Hoban, and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia sandstone in the Neoclassical style. It has been the residence of every U.S. President since John Adams. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage.

In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed house in October 1817. Construction continued with the addition of the South Portico in 1824 and the North in 1829. Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901. Eight years later, President William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office which was eventually moved as the section was expanded. The third-floor attic was converted to living quarters in 1927 by augmenting the existing hip roof with long shed dormers. A newly constructed East Wing was used as a reception area for social events; Jefferson's colonnades connected the new wings. East Wing alterations were completed in 1946, creating additional office space. By 1948, the house's load-bearing exterior walls and internal wood beams were found to be close to failure. Under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame constructed inside the walls. Once this work was completed, the interior rooms were rebuilt.

Today, the White House Complex includes the Executive Residence, West Wing, Cabinet Room, Roosevelt Room, East Wing, and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which houses the executive offices of the President and Vice President.

The White House is made up of six stories—the Ground Floor, State Floor, Second Floor, and Third Floor, as well as a two-story basement. The term White House is regularly used as a metonym for the Executive Office of the President of the United States and for the president's administration and advisers in general. The property is a National Heritage Site owned by the National Park Service and is part of the President's Park. In 2007, it was ranked second on the American Institute of Architects list of "America's Favorite Architecture".

Portugues:

White House

The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., it was designed by Irish-born James Hoban, and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia sandstone in the late Georgian style. It has been the residence of every U.S. President since John Adams. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the home in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage.

Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had nearly all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901.

Today, the White House Complex includes the Executive Residence, West Wing, Cabinet Room, Roosevelt Room, East Wing, and the Old Executive Office Building, which houses the executive offices of the President and Vice President.

The White House is made up of six stories—the Ground Floor, State Floor, Second Floor, and Third Floor, as well as a two-story basement. The term White House is regularly used as a metonym for the Executive Office of the President of the United States and for the president's administration and advisers in general. The cloister of Monreale #8

The cloister of Monreale #8

Monreale,Sicily (Italy)

Monreale, from "Mons Regalis" (Royal Mountain), is a town of some 25,000 residents located on the slope of Mount Caputo (764 Meters) about 7 kilometers south of Palermo's center. Monreale overlooks the "Conca d'Oro," the beautiful valley beyond Palermo, and the town itself is situated at an altitude of roughly 300 Meters above sea level. No trip to Palermo is truly complete without a visit to Monreale.
Monreale is world-renowned for its cathedral, a dazzling mixture of Arab, Byzantine and Norman artistic styles framed by traditional Romanesque architecture, all combined in a perfect blend of the best that both the Christian and Muslim worlds of the 12th century had to offer. to view some elements of Sicilian church architecture. (Please activate your JAVA to open this link.)The beautiful mosaics in Monreale Cathedral are said to be one of the world's largest displays of this art, surpassed only by Istanbul's famous Basilica of Saint Sofia, once an Orthodox church. (Unfortunately, many of those beautiful mosaics were destroyed when the Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453.) Monreale's mosaics emblazon 6,340 square meters of the duomo's interior surface, more than those of the splendid church of Saint Mark in Venice.
The mosaics of "Santa Maria la Nuova," the official name of Monreale Cathedral, are far more extensive than those of the cathedral of Cefalu, and while the mosaics of the Palatine Chapel in Palermo's Norman Palace are of equally exquisite craftsmanship, the latter convey the sense of an elaborate work of art stuffed into a tiny house. In contrast, the mosaics of Monreale's duomo are grandiose, covering practically every inch of the vast interior.
The splendid cloister of the Benedictine abbey alone would make Monreale famous. Located next to the cathedral, these 228 columns, some with mosaic inlay, each with a meticulously stone carved capital, enclose the gardens of the cloister. The capitals themselves depict scenes in Sicily's Norman history, complete with knights and kings. The style of the Norman knight figures evokes that of the knights depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry, a chronicle of the Battle of Hastings. Historians have determined the date of the introduction of heraldry (coats of arms) in Sicily by the shields of the Monreale knight figures, which lack any heraldic decoration.
The history of Monreale can be summed up in the name of one man: King William II "The Good." The last of the Norman Kings of Sicily was the grandson of the illustrious Roger II. Prior to the construction of Santa Maria la Nuova, it is believed Monreale was a tiny Saracen hamlet named "Ba'lat," where local farmer's would gather to cart their produce to the market, or "souk," down in Palermo. That outdoor market still exists to this day and is known as Ballaro. It is possible that Ballaro's name derives from an Arabic phrase meaning "Ba'lat Market."
During the Norman dominion, Ba'lat, soon to be renamed Monreale, became a favorite hunting ground of the Hauteville monarchs. In those days, deer, boar and wild cats still roamed Sicily, where there were more forests than today, and falconry was popular among the aristocracy.
Walter of the Mill, the English bishop of Palermo, was the head of faction of nobles who sought to influence and control the young king into granting them more power and lands. This faction also wanted to lessen the power and number of the many Muslim ministers and functionaries in William's court. Walter had been William's tutor when the king was a child and during his mother's regency. William was just 13 years old when his father, William I, died in 1166, and until he reached his majority in 1171 he was subject to the regency of his mother, Margaret of Navarre. However, the kingdom was actually controlled by Matthew d'Ajello, the royal vice-chancellor, and Walter, the bishop of Palermo, the latter having attempted to exert undue influence on the William as his tutor. The young sovereign wished to demonstrate his independence through the construction of a grand cathedral.
The first of King William's objectives was to establish himself firmly as sovereign. William had only been crowned in 1171 when he turned eighteen; he was 21 when the construction of the cathedral was begun. The second reason King William wanted the cathedral built was to impress on his subjects, especially the Muslims, the power and riches of his monarchy. William II wanted to inculcate the sense of rule by divine right upon his subjects, thus the cathedral's mosaic of Christ crowning William king.
Many Muslims from Palermo had fled to the hill country surrounding the capital after a rebellion against William's father in 1161. Led by Matthew Bonello, the Norman-Sicilian nobility had begun to support an anti-Arab policy, leaving the Saracens to establish themselves in easily-fortified towns such as San Giuseppe Jato, Corleone and Cin

Welcome to Wanamaker's – Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Maxine Dalsemer works in the Visitor Center of Macy’s and gives an informative tour of the Wanamaker Building. During the tour she talks extensively about the history of the Wanamaker building, its architecture, and the business conducted within. She states that the building is made up of cement and steel with a facade of granite from Maine and an interior of the finest marble. "Wanamaker," she says, "didn’t think of the space in terms of dollars per square foot as most retailers do but was more concerned with the grandeur and beauty of the space."

She points out that the columns on the second floor lining the Grand Court are Corinthian, the ones on the third floor are Ionic, and the columns on all the floors supporting the ceilings are Doric. She brings the tour to a vestibule to show the very intricate mosaics made of Terrazzo Marble tiles that are placed painstakingly to create the Wanamaker’s logo

Ms Dalsemer claims that at one point there were a tennis court and a jogging track on the roof for the benefit of the store’s employees, but that they regrettably have been replaced with air conditioning units. As she walks through the store she reveals that most of the walls that the shoppers see are false walls used to camouflage stock rooms. She leads the tour past what used to be the Egyptian room on the 3rd floor but remorsefully declares that it has been converted to the executive offices. She explains that it once was a sales floor/auditorium that sold and auctioned off pianos. For special occasions the pianos were disassembled and stored to make room for the seating of 700 or more people. The tour is then brought to the Greek Hall also on the 3rd floor. This dark wood-paneled room with Tiffany Stained Glass Windows has intricately carved wood ceilings featuring Hellenistic patterns, molding featuring large plaster cameos of Roman generals, and elaborate inlayed wood designs on the walls.
