Kate and the Beanstalk (Anne Schwartz Books)

Kate and the Beanstalk (Anne Schwartz Books)

"I smell the blood of an Englishwoman. Be she alive or be she dead, I'll grind her bones to make my bread."
Mary Pope Osborne's funny, magical retelling of a favorite tale and Giselle Potter's enchanting illustrations feature Kate, a new and inspiring heroine for today's audience. Readers will cheer on this resorceful, gutsy girl as she outsmarts the famously greedy giant.

A clever twist on a classic fairy tale, Mary Pope Osborne and Giselle Potter's Kate and the Beanstalk stars a whip-smart girl instead of traditionally lazy, not-so-bright Jack. Osborne's telling (aside from the gender switch) remains fairly faithful to the original: the hungry mother sends her child out to sell the cow, the cow is traded for magic beans, the angry mother tosses the beans out the window, a beanstalk grows, the hero(ine) climbs it, and vanquishes the evil giant, winning treasure in the process. A surprise ending (for Kate, anyway... astute readers may guess the outcome) gives the tale an extra jolt of happily-ever-after. It's Potter's remarkably original illustrations that make this version stand out, however. Rich yet muted tones invite the eye to linger over the flat pictures of oval-headed Kate (in her various disguises), the creepy, droopy-lipped giant, and the rest. Potter's award-winning illustrations have appeared in The Honest-To-Goodness Truth and Gabriella's Song, while the ever-popular Osborne is best known for her Magic Tree House series. There ended up being 30 of us: an Italian, a Turk, an Irishman, a Frenchman, an Australian, a Romanian, 2 Kiwis, 3 Japanese, 6 Canadians, 6 Brits, and 7 Americans. Including the native speakers about a third were fluent Japanese speakers another third intermediate and the other third beginners. We included a cosmetics salesman, an artist, a Marine Corps Captain, a retiree, a farmer, a couple of graduate students, a sound engineer, a chef, and of course every ilk of language teacher you can imagine. Three of us were women, 27 men. We had one official medic, Kate and three other qualified people. Eighteen of us had building experience. The youngest of us was 23 and the eldest 68. Our shortest time in Japan was 6 months and our longest 35 years. We hailed from 6 prefectures: Hiroshima, Okayama, Hyogo, Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto. We traveled in 7 cars and a rented 1.5-ton truck.

This photo is not about selling Kafer (the real word for Beetle) VWs, Volkswagen which soon will belong entirely to our great sports car company PORSCHE...... but about selling hats. Well that's Japan. Actually this was taken in Beppu a town or better a huge city which is famous for their "onsen" their natural hotsprings.

These nice hats and the beautiful car were disposed in a departmentstore in Beppu, Japan.

50 Words For Snow

50 Words For Snow features 7 tracks set against a background of falling snow, with a total running time of 65 minutes; through a highly evocative musical and lyrical landscape this haunting album once again pushes the boundaries of Kate Bush s art. The album features a number of special guest musicians including Elton John, Andy Fairweather Low and, on the title track, the British writer/broadcaster/raconteur Stephen Fry. Kate Bush has been cited as a huge influence on a range of artists from newcomers like Florence and the Machine and Feist to established artists like Tori Amos and Bjork; she has also been praised by figures as diverse as OutKast, Tricky and Sex Pistol/PIL legend John Lydon who said; "Kate Bush supplies me with all the clues and it s up to me to put the answers together, and that surely is what we are all looking for."
