Perilous Missions: Civil Air Transport and CIA Covert Operations in Asia
Civil Air Transport (CAT), founded in China after World War II by Claire Chennault and Whiting Willauer, was initially a commercial carrier specializing in air freight. Its role quickly changed as CAT became first a paramilitary adjunct of the Nationalist Chinese Air Force, then the CIA's secret "air force" in Korea, then "the most shot-at airline in the world" in French Indochina, and eventually becoming reorganized as Air America at the height of the Vietnam War. William M. Leary's detailed operational history of CAT sets the story in the perspective of Asian and Cold War geopolitics and shows how CAT allowed the CIA to operate with a level of flexibility and secrecy that it would not have attained through normal military or commercial air transportation.

Journey to Cao Lanh
Several US team members began our journey from the San Francisco airport, checking in the 29 Interplast boxes filled with the medical supplies that we would need for two weeks of surgeries in Cao Lanh, a small city in southwest Vietnam. We had a great experience with Eva Air, as the flight attendants were pleasant and accommodating and we arrived at our destinations on time. We met the rest of our team in either Taipei, Taiwan or at the airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This is the most international team I have participated in, so in addition to hearing Vietnamese spoken by the locals, we have the pleasure of hearing terms such as chap and brilliant being uttered by our anesthesiologists from Britain and New Zealand.
Go Back Home
Capt.Ridzwan has been instruct to the flight attendant to close the cabin door immediately, and here is the end of my trip to visit Malaysia. I hope i will be back here to explore the places that have many natural wonders. Especially nature.

In his monumental work Bloody Shambles, Volume Two, Christopher Shores described in detail the British retreat out of Burma, culminating at the end of May 1942. The monsoon then brought operations on land and in the air virtually to a halt for several months as the British and Indian forces prepared to re-take Burma. The Japanese however, had very different ideas. Air War for Burma picks up the story from the beginning of June 1942 and follows the hardfought campaigns through to the end of the war in August 1945. Here the activities of the RAF and USAAF during the desperate fighting of 1942-44, resulting ultimately in victories at Imphal and Kohima, are fully recounted. No less a forgotten air force than was the 14th 'Forgotten Army', the RAF particularly was denied the most modern and effective aircraft until late in the fighting, struggling to survive with obsolescent equipment against frequently superior Japanese machines. Described herein are the operations during the First and Second Arakan Campaigns; support for the Chindits in their long-range penetrations deep into enemy-held territory; the savage sieges of Imphal and Kohima; and the final victorious advance across the plains of Central Burma to Mandalay and Rangoon. Detailed also are the activities over the Indian Ocean and the East Indies of the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers and the aircrews of the Fleet Air Arm. Painstakingly researched from official sources, log books, letters and interviews, this is far and away the best reference work on the subject, and completes the set.

Suites Del Angel 01
Suites Del Angel, not to be confused with Hotel Del Angel (which is next door), is located at 162 calle Rio Lerma (at calle Rio Tiber) in the Paseo De La Reforma district; being just two short blocks off of the Paseo de la Reforma itself. The beautiful Monumento a la Independencia, commonly know as Del Angel, is right around the corner. The hotel is near the financial district, Polanco, and the Zona Rosa. The large Chapultepec Park (a major tourist destination) is a leisurely 12-block walk away. There are many restaurants in the area, as well as clean and well-stocked corner stores. A Sanborns store/restaurant is two blocks away at Rio Tiber and Paseo de la Reforma. The US Embassy is just one block away, and several of the airlines have offices nearby. The area is safe both in the day as well as at night and police are always present. The closest Metro (subway) station is Insurgentes, located on the other side of the Zona Rosa, seven or eight blocks from the hotel. Metro service is frequent and cheap (20 cents! to ride anywhere on the system) and while it is noisy and hot it appeared to be safe.
The hotel was very nice and cleaned daily. Most of the staff can speak English well, are very helpful, and can book guests on local tourist tours. There is a small restaurant in the hotel which serves breakfast lunch and dinner.

Greece's Indignados continue protests for sixth day
In Athens, Thessaloniki and score of other cities and towns across Greece, protesters have continued to attend rallies in protest against the government and the austerity measures demanded by the country's creditors.
In Athens more than 100,000 gathered peacefully in the central Syntagma Square opposite parliament to express their indigbation with not only the policies ofthe ruling PASOK party but also with the whole political system in general which is widely perceived as being corrupt and unrespeonsive to popular needs.
In Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki thousands also rallied, taking part in open assemblies which lasted from 6pm till after midnight, despite torrential downpours. Debates not only focused on the current economic crisis but also touched on wider issues such as how the country should be governed.
However, as the days pass demonstrators, following the example of Spanish, Egyptian and Tunisian protests have been organising themselves with internet camps, cleaning crews, translation groups being formed in order to get their message across and keep sites tidy.
In sharp contrast to massive unrest that gripped Greece in December 2008 following the police shooting of a teenager the present demonstrations have been remarkably peaceful and have included a far wider ranger of ages and political views as ordinary people unaffliated with any political group have come to hear and share with others their own experiences.
Greece to love...
...just a few minutes drive from Apart 44 and one reaches one of my favorite little places on earth...a tiny little beach, almost private {about 10 -15 people can lie there!} and for free, where I have been swimming the past ten years. It pleases me a lot that my partner loves it as much...every time we visit and when in good shape, we swim till the island - rock seen....it's not really far and the view to the horizon is just breathtaking...
Shot taken during yesterday afternoon's swim.

Last Dinner, Delhi, India
A short flight took us from Varanasi to Delhi. I had this delicious vegetarian curry meal as my last dinner with the group. Amongst the sample of Indian cuisine I tasted are - paneer - Indian cheese, Kadai sauce - a brown onion gravy, pakora - tasty deep fried snack with lentils, garlic naan, vegetarian cutlet etc. Well, the fog came back to Delhi when I boarded the plane, and we were delayed for six hours, causing an extra layover in Hong Kong for me. And this concluded my trip to India.
Varanasi Airport
Our scheduled flight to Nepal had been canceled, and the airport manager treated us to drinks in the airport's restaurant. Our appetites were not ready, just 2 days after falling ill, but we spent a few hours there before flying to Delhi instead.

A New York Times Notable Book A Best Book of the Year: The Economist, The New Yorker, San Francisco Chronicle, Slate.com, and Time In Venice, at the Biennale, a jaded, bellini-swigging journalist named Jeff Atman meets a beautiful woman and they embark on a passionate affair. In Varanasi, an unnamed journalist (who may or may not be Jeff) joins thousands of pilgrims on the banks of the holy Ganges. He intends to stay for a few days but ends up remaining for months. Their journey—as only the irrepressibly entertaining Geoff Dyer could conjure—makes for an uproarious, fiendishly inventive novel of Italy and India, longing and lust, and the prospect of neurotic enlightenment. Book Description A wildly original novel (what else would we expect from this fearless and funny writer?) that explores the underbelly of erotic fulfillment and spiritual yearning. Every two years the international art world descends on Venice for the opening of the Biennale. Among them is Jeff Atman—a jaded, dissolutely resolute journalist—whose dedication to the cause of Bellini-fuelled party-going is only intermittently disturbed by the obligation to file a story. When he meets Laura, he is rejuvenated, ecstatic. Their romance blossoms quickly but is it destined to disappear just as rapidly? Every day thousands of pilgrims head to the banks of the Ganges at Varanasi, the holiest Hindu city in India. Among their number is a narrator who may or may not be the Atman previously seen in Venice. Intending to visit only for a few days he ends up staying for months, and finds—or should that be loses?—a hitherto unexamined idea of himself, the self. In a romance he can only observe, he sees a reflection of the kind of pleasures that, willingly or not, he has renounced. In the process, two ancient and watery cities become versions of each other. Could two stories, in two different cities, actually be one and the same story? Nothing Geoff Dyer has written before is as wonderfully unbridled, as dead-on in evocation of place, longing, and the possibility of neurotic enlightenment, as irrepressibly entertaining as Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi. About the Author Geoff Dyer is the author of three previous novels and five nonfiction books, including But Beautiful, which was awarded the Somerset Maugham Prize, and Out of Sheer Rage, which was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. The winner of a Lannan Literary Award, the International Center of Photography's 2006 Infinity Award for writing on photography (for The Ongoing Moment), and the American Academy of Arts and Letters' E. M. Forster Award, Dyer lives in London. Questions for Geoff Dyer Q: What is this book about? A: At the risk of being cowardly, I'll take refuge behind a line from one of Kerouac’s letters: "It's my contention that a man who can sweat fantastically for the flesh is also capable of sweating fantastically for the spirit." (See also answer to question 4.) Q: Is it a modern twist on Death in Venice? If not, what's up with the title? A: Yes, the first part is a version of the Mann novella--the opening sentence is ripped straight out of the opening line of the original--but mine operates at a far lower cultural level. His protagonist is a world-famous composer, mine is a hack journalist. And whereas in the Mann, Aschenbach's obsession with the young boy, Tadzio, is tied up with some quest for ideal beauty, in my book the romance with Laura is very carnal and hedonistic--though that could itself be said to represent some kind of ideal. Q: Why Venice and Varanasi? A: They're actually very similar: both are water-based, old, with crumbling palaces facing onto either the Grand Canal or the Ganges with alleys and narrow streets leading off into darkness and sudden oases of brilliant light. And both, in their ways, are pilgrimage sites. I'm not the first person to be struck by the similarities. There are quite a few occasions in his Indian Journals when Ginsberg is so stoned walking by the Ganges that he thinks he's in Venice, strolling along the Grand Canal! Q: Are the two parts of the book, two stories in two different cities, or are they the same story? How are they linked? One early reviewer claimed that the protagonist in each story wasn't the same person, but two people--is it the same person or not? A: Well, these are huge questions and this, in fact, is what the book is about. By asking questions like these the reader is hopefully confronted by several more, about what kind of unity the book has, about the ways in which a novel might be capable of generating an aesthetic unity of experience that is not narrative-driven. Regarding the person in each part, I'll opt for what governments call the N.C.N.D. response, neither confirming nor denying. It is never made clear whether the un-named narrator in Varanasi is the same as the protagonist in Venice. And although sequentially it comes afterwards, there is nothing in the book to suggest that part 2 comes chronologically after part 1. I actually wanted to subtitle the book "A Diptych" but was dissuaded by my handlers. I didn't mind: it so obviously is a diptych there's no need to call it one! Q: You've clearly spent a lot of time in Venice and Varanasi. Have any of Jeff's adventures happened to you? A: Yes, I've been to three biennales and spent a big chunk of time in Varanasi. As I've said elsewhere, I like writing stuff that's only an inch from life but all the art--and, for me, all the fun--is in that inch.

Parasailing
Parasailing, also known as parascending, is a recreational activity where a person is towed behind a vehicle (usually a boat) while attached to a specially designed parachute, known as a parasail. The boat then drives off, carrying the parascender into the air. If the boat is powerful enough, two or three people can parasail behind it at the same time. The parascender has little or no control over the parachute.
There are six parts of a parasail. The harness attaches the pilot to the parasail, which is connected to the boat, or other speeding vehicle, by the tow rope. The activity is primarily an amusement ride, not to be confused with the sport of paragliding. There are parasailing locations all over the world.
Land based parasailing has also been formed into competition sport in Northern Europe and especially in Finland. In land based parasailing, the parasail is towed behind a car or a snowmobile. In accuracy competitions the tow-vehicle controls the speed and height, and the parascender controls the lateral movement of the parasail. The competitions consist of two parts: dropping or throwing a streamer to a target, and accuracy landing. The sport was developed at the end of the 1990s in growing rapidly. The first international competitions were held in 2004.
[edit] History
Chris Abbott designed chute
The first Parasails were developed by Pierre-Marcel Lemoigne in 1961. Lemoigne is a well known developer of ParaCommander-type of parachutes known as ParaCommander or PC-canopies. The date of the first towing of a parasail is not known, but one of the first mentions is a flight by Colonel Michel Tournier from France flying behind a tractor in the same year - 1961. In 1963 Jacques-Andre Istel from Pioneer Parachute Company bought a licence from Lemoigne to manufacture and sell the invention with a name parasail.
Mark McCulloh of Miami, Florida is the original inventor of modern day parasailing equipment.
In 1973, McCulloh introduced the world?s first Stationary Parasailing Platform. His continued innovations, inventions and accomplishments within the parasailing industry are broad in scope with a focus on improving the safety of parasailing.
His most successful invention was called the wangboat, which he patented in 1976 and made its commercial debut in the 1980s. Riding the wangboat is a lot more pleasurable than the normal winchboat. Today nearly all commercial operators use winchboats equipped with a PTO (power-take-off), which uses the boat's engine to drive a hydraulic winch. The combination of these two designs ushered in the era of widespread commercial parasailing.
Another highlight of McCulloh?s inventions, was the Aerial Recliner and the Rider Assembly strap design, which made its debut in the mid-eighties and inspired NASA?s new X-38 Crew Rescue Vehicle.
Aerial perspective of parasailing, Bali Indonesia
To date, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued McCulloh the only patents ever granted related to commercial parasailing methods and equipment.
Many of McCulloh?s accomplishments have been aired on worldwide Television Print Media, such as Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Fox News NBC, LA Times, New York Times, and the Miami Herald.
Since the early 70's, McCulloh's innovations, inventions and operating techniques continue to advance safety within the parasailing industry and has set the standards by which responsible operators follow. ___
Brian Gaskin, the founder of Waterbird, created some of the first parasails after experimenting with ex-military parachutes. In 1974, he created and tested the first true parasail which he named Waterbird. Nearly all commercial parasails canopies in operation today were derived from Gaskin's original Waterbird design. In 1975 Gaskin founded his company Waterbird Parakites which is still in operation today, producing commercial and recreational parasail?s in the UK.
[edit] Parasailing Associations
Commercial watersports winchboat
Today's parasail operators have evolved into highly organized and professional operations. Many of the largest operators are located in the Southeast US and Caribbean.
In 1998, Mark McCulloh formed ?Parasail Safety Council?, [www.parasail.org] [1] which established the first commercial parasail safety guidelines, procedures and provided the public with valuable information about parasailing.
In 2003, Arrit McPherson, an advent parasail operator formed PAPO (the Professional Association of Parasail Operators to also promote safety throughout the sport and help the industry's failing image in recent years.
Operators have moved from small (20-foot range) parachutes to large (30-40 feet) parachutes which utilize high-lift, low-drag designs enabling operators to fly higher payloads in lower (typically and more preferably extremly dangerous) winds. Most operators now offer double and triple flights using a tandem bar. The tandem bar is an aluminum bar attached to the yoke of the chute, allow

Riveting WWII Documentary: D-Day Minus One DVD (1945)
D-Day Minus One is a tremendous documentary that reveals the role of the lesser known Airborne Divisions the day before D-Day - when paratroops, gliders, and troop carriers landed in France behind enemy lines to prepare for the invasion of Normandy. A patriotic film that never falls into the usual traps of racism and jingoism, the film illuminates how these brave men engaged in heroic operations that prepared the way for, or worked in concert with, the epic invasion that next day. The footage of these troops being dropped behind enemy lines is excellent, and the narration stirring and moving. This vital exposure to the military experience in World War II is a fascinating walk through a momentous event in history. D-Day Minus One is unquestionably one of the best vintage World War II films ever made.

UNHCR issues educational toolkit on asylum and migration in Europe
Lively Event: Participants at the launch of the innovative educational toolkit in Brussels. © UNHCR/N.Ral
BRUSSELS, Belgium, March 26 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency and its partner, the International Organization for Migration, on Thursday launched an innovative educational toolkit designed to inform young people about the main migration and asylum issues in the European Union (EU).
The "Not Just Numbers" toolkit, developed by the two agencies and supported by the European Commission (EC), was unveiled at a lively event in Brussels attended by young people. It will be rolled out in other European countries in the coming weeks.
"We hope the toolkit will encourage informed discussion and debate among young people,'' said Judith Kumin, director of UNHCR's European Union Liaison Office. "The kit provides a resource for teachers and other educators to help them respond to the issues and questions they often face in the classroom."
Aimed at 12-18-year-olds in Europe, the kit will contribute to the efforts of UNHCR, the IOM and the EC to promote public understanding of the situation of asylum seekers and migrants and to combat discrimination and prejudice.
Many young people in Europe have concerns about immigration and asylum that are based on misperception and misinformation – the toolkit aims to counter this. UNHCR and IOM believe education is the key to forging a healthy relationship between host communities and immigrants.
Seventeen-year-old Yacine, a Belgian of Congolese and Moroccan origin, told participants at the launch that he often received strange reactions from children at school and people in the street because of the colour of his skin. "These reactions, which range from fear to distrust or violence, make me sad because they often they come from ignorance and incomprehension."
By means of short films and a simple teacher's manual, the toolkit provides lesson plans, learning activities and other educational resources that can be used inside and outside the classroom. The kit is currently available in English, but there will soon be versions in 20 European languages on the UNHCR and IOM websites.
The toolkit was welcomed by IOM's Brussels-based representative. "While migration to the EU is often portrayed in terms of anonymous statistics, the context and causes of migration are diverse and individual," Bernd Hemingway said. "Young people often lack the wider knowledge and the tools they need to be able to analyze and develop informed views on migration and asylum," he added.
Migration and asylum are at the top of the EU policy agenda. The reasons for migration to Europe are increasingly diversified, and so are the categories of migrants, with refugees and asylum seekers accounting for a small portion.
But public opinion in some European countries often calls for more restrictive policies and measures, without distinguishing between refugees and other categories of migrants.
Racism, xenophobia and discrimination exist in all EU member states and have an impact on refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants, who are often unfairly associated with crime and other anti-social behaviour. The situation is being exacerbated by the current economic crisis.
Against this backdrop, there is an urgent need for reliable and accessible information on migration and asylum in the EU. Critical issues such as the causes of refugee flight and economic migration, human trafficking, the particular situation of migrant and refugee children, the human rights dimension, and many other issues need to be addressed.

A day where many lessons were learned (+6 in comments) .... 11/365
Right ... where do I start ... I thought it would be a good idea to come back off a night shift last night, change clothes, make a flask of coffee, grab my D300S, 1.4x TC, 80-200mm f/2.8, a camo coat, my tripod and the hide and get out before dawn to try once again to look for a Kingfisher.
So by 0745 this morning I was in the hide, camera on tripod, searching the canal bank (different location from yesterday backed up with a bit better research !!) for life. I waited until 1030hrs and thought well if a Kingfisher was about I'm sure I'd have seen it by now as I'm led to believe they are most active in mornings. So ... I after seeing many Squirrels, Mallards and a lone Common Egret, I decided to abandon my plan - proposterous idea that it was - should have just gone to sleep !! I ended up headed for Cwm Clydach RSPB Reserve (which I had found the night previously during my local Kingfisher resarch) a few miles up the road. I arrived at the reserve expecting hides etc ... but no a long path .... with no birds !!!! There was no life apart from a single solitary Common Buzzard, I was hoping for Dippers, Jays, Sparrowhawks but no. However it is a very very beautiful wood, which brings me on to lesson number 2 ... if I had brought a wider lens, my ND's or even just caps for the TC so I could have removed it. I did see some fabulous fungus specimens there which I have included below. It was a very damp and mossy wood, really beautiful with water running everywhere. So anyway, after walking 5 miles I returned to the car with my tail between my legs feeling quite tired from the lack of sleep. It was now 1400hrs. So driving home I thought, I'll just walk up the other side of the canal motivating myself to last a little longer. I walked a mile, and thought I'll walk to the next lock, set the hide up and see what turns up hoping for Mink or maybe even an Otter or at least some water birds. It was now 1600 and I was really feeling tired, so got out the hide, packed it up and then - woooosh a flash of blue NOOOOOO !!! I turned around and there was the Kingfisher perched about 5 m away .... gutted, he then spotted me and flew off into the sun perching a little further down river. But there we go ... I saw one ... that was the main thing ... but I should have gone to bed ... as it is now 1740 and I am back in work at 2200 !
There we go ... I did take the best shots of a Robin I had ever taken on the way back to the car, and saw a magnificent landscape scene of ivy trailing down from the tree canopy into the canal against a bridge in the golden light of sunset, but couldn't get a decent enough shutter speed to hand hold the 80-200mm !!! Did like the backlit holly to the side of the scene and managed to snap that at f/2.8 for some circular bokeh ... but the 80-200 does give a lot of chromatic aberration at f/2.8 in high contrast situations - is this normal ?
So next time I will at least have a wide angle, be it my Tamron or Tokina, with at least an ND4, and I certainly won't go shooting after a night shift into a night shift with no bed !
Ah well ... at least I know where I can find Kingfishers now ... watch this space ... beautiful creatures that they are ... I feel so privileged to have seen one.
I don't think it is "right" to geotag the image sorry ladies and gents ....

Grob 115E Tutor G-BYWL - Oxford University Air Squadron/No 6 Air Experience Flight Royal Air Force
The Grob 115E, known by the RAF as the Tutor, is used for Elementary Flying Training by the 14 University Air Squadrons and 12 Air Experience Flights throughout the UK. It is also used by the Central Flying School and for elementary WSO training at the RAF College Cranwell. All of the Tutors in RAF service are entered on the UK Civil Aircraft Register and are provided by VT Group.
The Tutor is constructed mainly from carbon fibre reinforced plastic, which combines high strength with light weight. Like its predecessor, the Bulldog, the Tutor has side-by-side seating but, unlike the Bulldog, the primary flight instruments are on the right-hand side of the cockpit. This allows the student to fly the aircraft from the right-hand seat with a right-hand stick and a left-hand throttle so that future transition to fast-jet aircraft is made easier.
Unpressurised, and powered by a Textron-Lycoming 180hp piston engine driving a Hoffman three-bladed, constant-speed propeller, the Tutor can cruise at 130kts at sea level and climb to 5,000ft in seven minutes. The aircraft has a very clean airframe and has a three-minute inverted- flight time limit, making it ideal for aerobatics where, unlike previous RAF light aircraft, it loses little or no height during a full aerobatic sequence. The aircraft has a very modern instrument and avionics suite, including a Differential Global Positioning System, which, apart from giving excellent navigational information, can also be used to generate a simulated Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach for training use at airfields where ILS ground equipment is not fitted for the runway in use.
The Tutor is a cost-effective, modern elementary training aircraft. The combination of docile handling characteristics and good performance make it very suitable for its training role.
The Cost of a Soldier
A True Soldier is tough indeed
standing tall and strong when there is a need
A Soldier also feels sadness, pain, and sorrow
Sometimes not looking forward to the trials of tomorrow
When a Soldier is wounded in battle
the nerves of his buddies it does rattle
When news reaches friends and family at home
how their worries and minds begin to roam
A wounded Soldier feels inadequate at best
stopping him from much needed healing rest
A wounded Soldiers wonders will he ever be alright,
trusting in God that he'll make it through the night.
When a Soldier is wounded far beyond repair
the loss and pain felt can not compare
The Cost of a Soldier is set so very high
they assure our freedom will always apply
To stand beside a Soldier and walk through his pain
will humble a civilian, no longer to complain
Love, patience, trust and hope is what a Soldier needs
to get them through some very treacherous deeds
Dear god please watch over our Military today
as they work to keep our freedom everyday
For the wounded and the families of Soldiers lost
Please Bless them with abundant love, for we know not the cost.
The Cost of a Soldier is set so very high
our support for them we should never deny

Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art
This book is about the inner sources of spontaneous creation. It is about where art in the widest sense comes from. It is about why we create and what we learn when we do. It is about the flow of unhindered creative energy: the joy of making art in all its varied forms. Free Play is directed toward people in any field who want to contact, honor, and strengthen their own creative powers. It integrates material from a wide variety of sources among the arts, sciences, and spiritual traditions of humanity. Filled with unusual quotes, amusing and illuminating anecdotes, and original metaphors, it reveals how inspiration arises within us, how that inspiration may be blocked, derailed or obscured by certain unavoidable facts of life, and how finally it can be liberated - how we can be liberated - to speak or sing, write or paint, dance or play, with our own authentic voice. The whole enterprise of improvisation in life and art, of recovering free play and awakening creativity, is about being true to ourselves and our visions. It brings us into direct, active contact with boundless creative energies that we may not even know we had.

The other pictures of Petra and Ghost playing are from the other day. They are getting to be better and better friends. This morning Ghost walked up to Petra and licked his head!
Ghost wants to play with the other cats but she won't leave the general area of the table and/or the chair in the living room. It's like she's afraid to go from a certain small "safe" area.

The Pacific Golden Plover breeds chiefly in the Arctic coast region of Siberia and in a more limited area on the Alaskan coast. Some of the birds probably migrate south via the continent of Asia to winter in Japan, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania. Others evidently go south by way of the Pacific Ocean to the Hawaiian Islands and other islands of the central and southern Pacific. Migrating golden plovers have been observed at sea on a line that apparently extends from Hawaii to the Aleutian Islands; it appears certain some of the Alaskan birds make a nonstop flight across the sea from Alaska to Hawaii. This bird was photographed at Kilauea Military Camp on the Big Island of Hawaii.
ABQ - Boarding the nonstop flight to SFO
Linda S. is absolutely amazing, She works for United at ABQ. We were scheduled to leave on a flight to Denver (then transfer to SFO), but it was delayed. I noticed there was an earlier, direct flight, to SFO.
At 4:35 pm, I asked Linda what she could do for us. She was amazing! She got us new boarding passes right away, then personally transferred our luggage from the DEN flight to the SFO flight. By personally, I mean that she was on the tarmac and carried our bags herself. I watched her from the window.
At 5 pm, she had us board the small Canadair (50 passengers) to SFO. Linda rules!
