I don't normally get into the whole "tagged" thing, but this time around, I was tagged by a couple of people that I ADORE and I absolutely loved reading their 10 Random Facts, so I figured I would participate this time. I just feel like everyone on here knows so much about me already because of my 365, so I'll try not to repeat anything...

1: Star sign: Aries. Yep. The Ram. If you cross me, I will head butt you. End of story.

2: I write with my right hand, but do EVERYTHING ELSE with my left.

3: I have a half brother and a half sister. They lived with me off and on until I was about six

4: I was a gymnast from the age of 5 until I was a teenager. Balance beam was my forte. Not going to lie, I was really good at it. You don't earn the name "Beam Goddess" for nothing!

5: I absolutely love to cook. I am always looking for a new recipe to try. I also love trying new restaurants. I prefer to *experience* food, especially with my close friends.

6: Being a makeup artist by trade, I have an obscene amount of makeup. One day, when I buy a house, I will need a closet specifically for my makeup.

7: I collect vintage Fiestaware and Lady vases. I also have a good amount of Depression Glass and antique bottles. I like old stuff :)))

8: I love to go fishing!!!

9: I had a horrific experience with knee surgery about two years ago, and only recently have I been able to bend my knees like they're bent in the shot above.

10: I may, or may not, be planning to do a Year Two 365...muwahahahha....

Douglas factory site replaced by homes ?

Douglas History

In the 18th century Kingswood was a small coal mining village where George Whitefield's open-air preaching greatly influenced John Wesley in the founding of Methodism. The construction of a number of chapels, Tabernacle and schools by Whitefield, Wesley, and their associates and followers is held to be one of the factors contributing to Kingswood's growth. Coal mining first brought the Kingswood area to industrial prominence in the late 17th century.

The Douglas Motorcycle Company started making drain covers and lamp posts in but in 1907 the Kingswood company fitted a unique horizontal twin-cyclinder engine into a standard cycle frame.The first model was primitive but by 1910 Douglas were racing and was the start of the company's 20-year domination of the sport. By 1923 Douglas motorcycles held 150 British and world records.

2008 MOTORCYCLE WORKS TO BE REPLACED BY HOMES

Developers want to build hundreds of homes on the former Douglas motorcycle factory site in Kingswood.

The 12-acre plot, which once housed the biggest motorcycle factory in the world, would be bulldozed to make way for between 300 and 350 homes, some of which will be affordable homes for first-time buyers.

Production of the famous Douglas motorcycles in Kingswood ended in 1957 and the buildings where 3,000 people once worked are now used by a number of small businesses.

Douglas Homes (South West) Ltd is preparing to submit a planning application as early as September to South Gloucestershire Council.

Tony Doyle, spokesman for developers LPC (Trull), said Douglas House, which is locally but not nationally listed, would be retained as part of the massive housing development.

The land has already been earmarked for housing by the local authority in its Local Plan so it is only the detail and design of the homes within the planning application that is likely to cause any controversy. The council has already agreed that the land could stand a building capacity of about 75 homes per hectare (2.4 acres).

Councillor Andy Perkins, the Labour group's spokesman on planning, said: "Houses are needed in Kingswood and the land has been designated for housing. What we have got to ensure is that the density is not overstretched, that there is public open space and community facilities.

"A development of this size is going to generate a lot of extra traffic so we've got to make sure the road improvements are in place to cope with the increase.

"The development of the Douglas works is going to happen so we have got to make sure we get it right at the planning stage."

Mr Doyle said the development would include a mix of houses, apartments and flats all built to a minimum of Code 3 for sustainable homes.

The phasing of the house building programme would be timed to fit in with the relocation of businesses currently occupying the site.

Cycle paths and pedestrian walkways will feature in the development, which will be well served by public transport.

Douglas House, once used for offices, would be restored as part of the housing scheme.

Douglas Homes will hold a design workshop for people having an interest in the site to draw up preliminary design ideas. That will be followed with a second workshop and exhibition to give residents living in the area a chance to see the preliminary designs.

Any concerns and suggestions from the public will be considered before a final design is prepared for submitted for planning permission.

Douglas factory site should be saved for local employment

As a piece of South Gloucestershire heritage, people should always know what their benefits may be, and what may be lost to them forever and those to come. For more than 100 years the site has provided employment for Kingswood families.

The buildings are still intact which means that the area has the very last motorcycle factory left in the whole country. Sites that produced machines such as the Norton, BSA, Triumph, AJS, Matchless and many, many more are now lost under acres of new flats and apartments.

How can people afford these when there are no places to work to earn money?

Surely we should now be polluting less and working closer to home?
Kingswood now has no boot and shoe factories, no coal- mining and very shortly the Kleeneze brush works will be gone. My fear is that we will become a nation of paper-pushers. So let's make sure we keep the Douglas factory site for local employment.

Ventura's On James Street North, Hamilton - Hybrid HDR

Like the Vasco Da Gama Soccer Club building I recently posted, this image was taken on James Street North in Hamilton, Ontario in the "Beasley" District, one of the four original districts to form Hamilton. This area has been known for many years as a tough area and also the poorest (based on per-capita income) area in Canada. However, the area has been steadily cleaning up under the leadership of the local arts and Portuguese communities as well as young professionals seeking affordable housing with character and ready access to the downtown. Because of the large Portuguese community, a number of restaurants catering to the associated ethnic tastes have sprung up. Ventura's is one of them, and at knight its facade, complete with lighted sailing vessel, is one of them. Although the area is not completely out of the woods as far as its recovery is concerned, it has come a long way and is now a wonderful area to visit for good food and fine art. - JW

The image was created from a 3 shot auto bracket (+/-2EV ISO320) using a tripod-mounted Nikon D5000. The Nikon was fitted with an 18-55mm VR lense set at 18mm, f/5.6. The resulting images were processed with Luminance/Qtpfsgui to produce the base HDR image using the setup information embedded in the file name and as shown below. The base HDR image was then loaded into GIMP along with the 3 images used to make the base HDR, and by selective deletion using a soft brush, various parts of the base HDR image were replaced by corresponding elements of the original images. This was done to repair the artifacts arising from HDR processing and tone-mapping, as well as to get a more natural look in certain areas. Once done, the resulting multi-layer adjusted image was flattened, perspective adjustment made to restore verticals to vertical (i.e. correct wide angle distortion), border added, and, scaled to 1024 wide for posting.

100-365 Bright Idea For Shot 100

Well I can't really take the credit for the idea Natacha gets the credit for that one.

I am actually surprised that I made it to day 100. I really thought I would be fed up by now. I am actually still enjoying it and am really happy when I get a shot I like.

I do really like the lighting on this one. I used on SB-600, zoomed to 85 mm, on manual at 1/2 power, very close to the light bulb. The idea here was to make it so that bulb looked lit up.

I used another SB-600, diffused, on manual at 1/2 power, used to light my face. At this point I had no more lights to get rid of those shadows behind me.

Both were fired with CLS.

Basically im doing colour, and sub-topic is teens, so basically ima capture teenagers doing stuff with really bright colours to show off their youth and fun etc!

Fresh Air

We were coming back from work, and unusually we came home via the sea front. The sun looked like it was going to do a pretty spectacular sunset, so we decided to go for a walk along the Prom and maybe take some pictures. However by the time we got there, after popping home to change and get the camera, storm coluds had rolled in and the wind was working up to a gale. So we had a bracing walk in a stinging cold wind. But that wind soon had Katie's cheeks glowing and her hair was all over the place. That said, (and I know I'm biased) even with no make-up in a force 5 gale, Katie still looks beautiful.

Our Last Moment With Lucy...

Our Last Moment With Lucy...

I guess it's about 11:20 in the morning here in New Jersey. One and a half hours ago we had to put our dog to sleep...

I brought her in to the animal hospital at 4am because her breathing was labored, she was disoriented, and she had soiled her bed and would not come back in from the rain when we let her out. I drove through the storm holding my wife's cell phone in my hand so the nav could tell me where to go. It was raining hard, streets were closed, trees were down, and I am not really sure how I made it there in one piece. I guess angels were guiding me along.

I got to the hospital, and after they ran some quick tests, the doctor determined that she was bleeding into her stomach, either from her liver or spleen. A mass was detected inside of her as well. The doctor suggested we leave her there for more work, so I drove back home into the downpour and strong winds.

When I got home, my wife had been pacing, and for a long while I sat there with her and held her as we both cried. I think we slept for perhaps one hour, but I can't be certain. Most everything is a blur. The doctor called around 9am and told us that Lucy's condition had deteriorated, since she was now showing signs of a neurological disorder, and that it was best that we gather the kids and drive over to say our goodbyes.

We sat the kids down and explained to them the best we could, in a way they would understand. We got them into their clothes and rushed out the door. The rain had eased, but the road conditions were still poor, with many branches in the road, and many sections of town cut off due to flooding.

We got to the hospital, and the doctor brought Lucy in to a small waiting room so we could pay our final respects. She was strapped down to a stretcher. She was breathing hard, drooling, trembling, her eyes were darting back and forth, and she was clearing suffering. We all laid our hands on her, stroked her, whispered words of warmth and gratitude into her soft ears, and kissed her head before I took the kids out and left my wife to be with the doctor. I remember at one point when we all put her hands on her at once, and she instinctively wagged her tail a few times, recognizing the people she loved.

I somehow filled out the paperwork at the desk through bloodshot, teary eyes that instructed the hospital to take care of the euthanization. I went back into the room and spent the last few minutes of Lucy's life with my wife and the doctor, sitting on the floor, as the vet slowly injected her with one solution after another. She put the stethoscope to Lucy's heart and told us when it was over. It was 10:05am.

What came to mind, though, as we drove away from that place in the now misty rain was how the previous morning, the back yard was inundated with a huge murder of crows, most likely swept to the ground by the high winds. There were literally a few hundred over the span of the neighborhood, that lifted up and set back down. I remembered that crows are quite powerful and symbolic creatures. To have them show up in your life means you'll experience a great emotional or spiritual shift, that it will be a time of transition, and that crows are guides between this world and the after-life, who help souls find their place of rest. I took it at the time to think that my wife might have a change in her work situation, since things there have been rocky of late. It wasn't until we drove back from that hospital this morning, that I understood why they appeared.

I don't know why in the middle of a very deep, emotionally traumatic, and life-changing event, I decided to take out a camera and snap a shot of Lucy. I guess it's always how I've dealt with things. When I am happy, I take a photo. When I am in pain, I take a photo. It's what I do. It's who I am. It's how I cope and make some sort of sense out of life. It's how I capture a moment, freeze it in time, so that even if the subject or event will not last forever, their image will. I honestly don't know anything else. This is what it is for me.

I have no idea what I am feeling. I'm surprised I can write this, let alone sit up straight. I think the real impact of this will hit me in quiet moments when I am used to Lucy running for the door when I come home from work, whimpering when she needed to be let out, watching us intently as we cooked and hoping a piece of food would drop to the floor, barking and hopping like a pup when she wanted to play or go for a walk or be close to us, or how she'd raise her nose to me so I could lay mine against hers, and for a a time just breathe one another in. Those are the small slices that make up a life, aren't they. And I will miss them. And I will miss her. Desperately.

Are you ready? Here are the answers!

1.Ride with the Hell's Angels? I was a wild child, a teen runaway, but I wasn't nuts. No, no...women were chattels among the Angels, and I belonged to nobody. Especially some stinky biker.

John Kay was one of the nicest, and most brilliantly talented men that I have ever met. Loved talking to this man.

2. I despise chemicals of all kinds, except natural ones. I don't even take aspirin.

3. Millionaire? I wish. No, David and I go off on our African safari (South Africa including Kruger National Park) in January 2010.

4. A bit of a trick question. I once began training to be a naturopath, herbologist, and midwife, but the lure of the media and the rock and roll world won out. Talk about complete opposites.

5. I really dislike hard liquor unless it is in a mixed drink, then it is okay. Otherwise, hand me my merlot. Even for breakfast.

6. I have not been arrested, but I have been "detained," on a few occasions. The cops in my small town just liked me, and didn't want me getting into serious trouble. So, they'd pick me up from time to time.

And, I nearly did became a criminologist. But I was already running our large special events company, and couldn't get my degree part-time, so I told the Dean I had to leave the program.

8. Structure and rules have their place, but I hate signs telling me that I can't do something to which I feel I am perfectly entitled.

The top is a salvaged window from the old house we just moved out of, the legs are from an old sewing machine table that I broke while moving, and the base (under the window) is a shelf we pulled out of the downstairs closet to make room for our entertainment center. The knob is from a junky set of drawers I rescued from a salvage shop. The drawer set is still in the old house, I'll be moving it here soon.

Haunted House

I once lived, for a very short time, in a house haunted by ghosts. This house had been empty for a very long time. I don't know for sure how long the house had been empty, but I do know that no one had lived in it for quite a few years.

It was a very beautiful three story house with a two room guest house and a big barn. It was located on the side of hill on a sparsely populated country road in the east part of Iceland . I had been living a few miles deeper in the wally and so I passed this house almost every day. For years there was a "For Sale" sign out front, but there never seemed to be a buyer.

I was working for a retired couple doing odd jobs. One day the old man made me an offer on the house. Until then I didn't even know that he was the one who owned it. He said that if I would clear the weeds on the hillside behind it and keep all the grass cut, wash the windows and do some repairs that I could live in it rent free. Naturally I was excited about the idea and so within a few days my wife, my daughter, and I were moving into the house. I did think that it was a little strange that he and his wife lived in their small house next to the road instead of that nice big house on the hill, but I didn't give it too much thought.

We couldn't believe our luck. The house was really nice inside and out and the property it was on was beautiful. There was a huge yard and the big lake spread out behind and mountain all around. The nearest neighbors were almost a mile away.

After only a couple of nights strange things started to happen. One night we were laying in bed in the third story bedroom when I began to hear music. It reminded me of the Big Band groups like Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. The music sounded far off at first, but it grew louder and louder until it sounded like it was coming from downstairs. Next I could hear what sounded like a large group of people talking. I couldn't make out what was being said, it was like a bunch of voices all mixed together. Suddenly a man and woman started yelling and arguing. I still couldn't make out what was being said, but I knew for sure that it was a man and a woman who were fighting.

At this point I turned to my wife and asked her if she could hear anything. She looked at me and I saw that her eyes were wide and she was afraid. She told me that she did hear something downstairs. I asked her what it was that she was hearing. She described to me exactly what I myself had been hearing! She said she heard a lot of people talking and then a man and a woman arguing and some old fashioned music playing. When she told me all that it was like the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up. For some reason I had felt no fear until that moment, but suddenly I was afraid. Were there ghosts just downstairs from us?

We got up from the bed and slowly walked toward the stairs and turned on the lights. The music and the voices started getting quieter. We went down the first flight of stairs and turned on the next set of lights and the ghostly sounds stopped. Soon we were in the main living room and were looking all around for any signs of what we had heard. Suddenly the ghostly noises started up again, except this time they were upstairs! We ran upstairs and brought our daughter down to the first floor. We made pallets in the floor and spent the rest of the night listening for ghosts with most every light in the house turned on.

Several nights later the whole thing started happening again. This time I was home alone. My wife and daughter were visiting relatives for the weekend. I was bound and determined not to let the ghosts get to me and even yelled out to them to leave me alone and to go away. It seemed to work at first. The noises would stop and everything would be quiet, but as soon as I laid back down and began to get comfortable it would all start up again!

The next day I went to see a man I knew who I had rented our previous residence from. I told him about everything that had happened and asked him if he knew anything about the history of the house or had ever heard anything about it being haunted by ghosts. He told me that sometime back in the 1920's there was a murder during a big family gathering, but didn't know any details about what had happened or who had been murdered.

That really got me to feeling eerie! I knew without any doubt that the house was haunted because my wife and I had both heard the sounds on more than one occasion and now I had learned a little bit about the history of the house.

The very next day the owner of the house came by and told us that we had to move out right away. I asked him why, but he would give no explanation. He just said that he didn't want anyone living in the house. I am certain that my ex-landlord had told him about what I had said about the ghosts and that was the reason he wanted us out as well as the reason why he wasn't living there himself. So, not long afterwards we would be driving past the old house
