When I created these blends, I that found that blends of 20 were either coherent enough to almost be recognizable, or so incoherent that individual photos could be made out.

This is an example of the first, and while the "Groups of 20" male models were all successes, I consider this one too disturbing to be a success.

Maybe it was the inclusion of the male model's heads.

1. I choose this photograph as my best choice of photo. I picked this photo because I liked the saturated color looks of the blue,yellow and the black background.2. I photographed the bird using my flash on and with the lights off to see what kind of figure I would get of the beautiful bird. 3. As I photographed the bird I got myself on my knee and zoomed my camera to get a better view of the details that the bird has.4. I like the way the yellow color around the peak is shown and th edarker lines on the birds head, I thought it was a beautiful texture on the bird. I also liked the way the lined backgrounded looks in a way it seemed as if it was 3D, as you stare into the photo it looks if its coming out. It was hard for me at first to pick the correct photo but I had an idea of this picture after watching the film in class.

The Ranger informed us that this was the first sightings of African Wild Dogs in six months. (Feb/2002)

AFRICAN WILD DOG

The African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus) is a carnivorous mammal of the Canidae family, found only in Africa, especially in scrub savanna and other lightly wooded areas. It is also called the Painted Hunting Dog, African Hunting Dog, the Cape Hunting Dog, the Spotted Dog, or the Painted Wolf in English, Wildehond in Afrikaans, and Mbwa mwitu in Swahili. It is the only species in the genus Lycaon.

Adults typically weigh 17-36 kilograms (37-79 pounds). A tall, lean animal, it stands about 30 inches (75 cm) at the shoulder, with a head and body length averaging about 40 inches (100cm) and a tail of 12 to 18 inches (30-45cm). Animals in southern Africa are generally larger than those in the eastern or western Africa.

African wild dogs have an unusual breeding system. Only one pair of dogs reproduces in a pack; other pack members act cooperatively to care for the young of the breeding pair. It has been said that African wild dogs are the most social of all mammals, never living apart from a pack at any stage in their lives.

They live in tightly knit social groups and hunt in packs, preying primarily on grazing animals such as gazelles, springboks, wildebeest and zebras. Members of a pack vocalize to help coordinate their movements. Its voice is characterized by an unusual chirping or squeaking sound.

While most predators stalk or ambush their prey, the wild dogs make no attempt to hide, they simply approach a herd until it stampedes and then single out an individual and chase it until it's exhausted. The dogs are swift, tireless runners and have been known to chase prey for an hour. During pursuit, they can reach speeds of up to 45 mph.

Nearly 80% of all hunts end in a kill. After a successful hunt, hunters regurgitate meat for those that remained at the den during the hunt, such as the dominant female and the pups. They will also feed other pack members such as the sick, injured or very old that cannot keep up.

Hunting dog packs range over very large areas -- from 600 to more than 1,500 square miles (1,560-3,900 sq km) a year - and even large parks may not provide enough territory to support viable dog populations. There were once about 500,000 African Wild Dogs in 39 countries, and packs of 100 or more were not uncommon. Now there are only about 3,000-5,500 in less than 25 countries. They are primarily found in eastern and southern Africa.

There are two remaining large populations, one associated with the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania and another population centered in northern Botswana and eastern Namibia. Smaller but apparently secure populations of several hundred individuals are found in Zimbabwe, South Africa (Kruger National Park) and in the Ruaha/Rungwa/Kisigo complex of Tanzania.

MALA MALA

Mala Mala is the oldest and largest private game reserve in South Africa. One of the first areas of private land to switch from hunting to conservation, it is spread over 33,000 acres (13,500 hectares) of the Mpumalanga Lowveld. The property shares a 12 mile unfenced border with Kruger National Park and contains the longest stretch of the Sand River of any of the Sabi Sand resorts. Its varied habitats - riverine forest, acacia bushveld, and savannah - support a broad selection of wildlife, and provide excellent opportunities for spotting the Big 5 (Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion & Rhinoceros).

Upon checking in, your game ranger will greet you and accompany you throughout your stay. The rangers, selected for their knowledge of African plant, animal, and bird-life, oversee your personal service. They will be your guide for your twice daily, four-hour game drives, sit with you at meals and impart their knowledge of African wildlife with stories about the individual behavior of animals within the MalaMala reserve.

Game drives are conducted in an open safari vehicle, accompanied by a professional Shangaan tracker. Despite the refined attention to detail, you are immediately aware that you are in Africa and that the unexpected may happen. Breakdowns and stuck vehicles are a hazard of driving through donga and bush, but the staff handles this with aplomb. Radio contact, a large reserve, and excellent guides enhance the probability of seeing the big five. The camp also offers guided bush walks.

African Wild Dogs

Lycaon pictus is a large canid found only in Africa, especially in savannas and other lightly wooded areas. It is variously called the African wild dog, African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, painted dog, painted wolf, painted hunting dog, spotted dog, or ornate wolf.
The scientific name "Lycaon pictus" is derived from the Greek for "wolf" and the Latin for "painted". It is the only canid species to lack dewclaws on the forelimbs.

On a Lunch Break to Havard with Leica DLux 4 on qAF setting (Photo Series)

For this pic, I did stop, framed and shot. But, I still had qAF mode turned on.

I wanted to play around a little more using prefocus mode, set to qAF (supposedly good for autofocusing moving objects).

I honestly didn't pay much attention to how fast the camera was able to focus. From the results I got, I'd have to guess the qAF mode does very well. I could have also set the camera on manual focus, aperture at f/8 to f/11 and auto ISO for quick pre-focus shooting. But, I wanted to go for a "street shooting" where I could take pictures from various distances with the largest aperture possible.

I walked from Central Square to Harvard (about a mile or less). Camera still set at qAF, I snapped a few pictures while I was walking, and never stopping (except for one picture of a chalk writing on the street). I shot from the waist level with camera to the side, as well as from the front (pointing the camera forward up and down as if I was looking at the photos I have taken.) I do that because I'm a bit shy being too obvious about taking photos of strangers on the street. Street photography hasn't been really "my thing" since I am kind of a quite/low key type of person.

I am very impressed with the results; fast focus, good metering, SILENT shutter and focus. Though I haven't done a lot of "street shooting," I'm finding Dlux 4 to be a quite capable "street shoot" camera. Having the Lecia grip also helped A LOT especially when I have to hold the camera side ways, taking shots from the side of the hip.

Anyway, I've posted a few pics from my walk. All these pictures in the series have been post-processed with a new free application I found for the mac, TiltShift to get the blur and softer look.

While at the preserve this morning I came upon a beautiful blue heron. This is the first of two shots of "George" taking flight.

I am back to my troubled thoughts; Lightroom 3 or Canon Digital Photo Professional for best quality basic post processing??? My friend Grant swears by CDPP. And these shots from the Riparian Preserve make a good case for CDPP. They look GREAT!

Tired of manually mapping your shots on Flickr? I used GPSed on my Blackberry for this photo shoot, then uploaded the track to my GPSed web account, downloaded the track after I uploaded my shots to my iMac, then used PhotoLinker to link my photos to the time stamps on my GPS log. Presto! It worked perfectly!

A successful day at Bosque del Apache. Many birds encounterd despite this being the "slow season", and many images to download. I may have discovered that many of the issues with clarity of images may actually be due to lightroom. I am going to try and download the CD cards again with Canon's Digital Photo Professional, which should use my in camera user preferences that apparently Lightroom ignores! This Warbler was one of the many birds I saw today. In addition, I was notified that there have been mountain lions sighted in the refuge. They have tagged one or two. I was luck to be one of the few to catch a glimpse this evening. She moved fast and I could only get a few second burst through the windshield. I will upload the photo when I can.

Artist Statement

The most significant material in my work is light; each additional material is
chosen for its ability to conduct or transmit light. My work is informed by my
interest in in boundaries and the energetic exchange between objects, bodies
and the spaces they inhabit.

My use of acrylic evokes a previous generation of West Coast art, whose
practitioners adopted engineering and fabrication techniques that reflected the
burgeoning aerospace industry. I chose acrylic for this work because of the
material's translucence, which allows the eye to look through the piece, while
creating a form that appears solid.

The work is both object and experience. The ambiguity between inside and
outside creates temporary illusions, defined by vantage point and the viewer's
own movement. I have an architectural interest in form, and shape and create
negative space within architectural environments. The site of installation
becomes part of each of my works, which typically respond to the surrounding
architecture.

Known for his iconic neon sculpture set atop the Hayward Gallery in London, Philip Vaughan will present the West Coast debut of “freefall” featuring a colorful cascade of neon tubes.

Seven days a week, from dusk till dawn, Long Beach locals and visitors, holiday shoppers, and art-minded and art-curious alike can embark on a self-guided Art Walk and Audio Tour of Let There be Light. At each storefront, viewers can connect via cell phone with a personalized message from the exhibiting artist or curator through the Guide by Cell Audio Tour, presented in partnership with The Long Beach Redevelopment Agency.

Trifold map of the exhibition sites are available at various Downtown Long Beach restaurants, vendors, hotels, as well as at various exhibition locales. Maps may also be downloaded from DowntownLongBeachArtWalk.com or PhantomGalleriesLA.com. The exhibitions are on view 24/7 however, it is recommended that the exhibits be viewed from 5 pm- 1am order to see all the works turned on and at its best and brightest. Richard Godfrey and Susan Chorpennings work is best viewed at various times of the day.

This is so frustrating, I had typed this long description of my day job, compared to what I do at night, and Klick, the iPhone app I use to upload photos to Flickr while we don't have an Internet access at home crashed pitifully. So maybe I'll type that tomorrow at work, if I can remember it.

Now I can focus on my "real" photo.

Here is what I can remember from my description from yesterday night:
Today at work I was given full access to the demo computers for the first time. We have a showroom, you've seen part of it already, and the computers in there are locked so customers don't mess up everything. It also prevents us to change, add or amend anything on them; if there are some stuff we need to change, we have to ask someone, and it takes about a month. So I've been campaigning to to be able to do it myself, because I spend a lot of time in there; showing things to people, wowing customers with a couple of clicks, solving issues even before the finish their question, is the best part of the job, and it had become increasingly frustrating to not be able to do it completely.

So today for the first time I was able to instal updates, add photos and music with album art, setup iChat between computers, screen savers and scheduled shut down on two iMacs 20" and 24", a MacBook, a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro. All is not finished, but I feel much better. OCD, me?

Anyway tonight I came home with a couple of installers and the need to continue tinkering with computers, so I got my MacBook Pro, PowerBook, iBook and Mac mini side to side and got to town on then, so they're all up to date, backed up and shiny. I think this is the job for me, what do you think?
