I guess the yellowish/greenish thing in the corner used to work and it flushed the toilet. Even though I now have a "western style" seat, it's really not that much more different. The little white sink in the corner was put in to bring water into the bathroom- after you "go", you fill up the cup with water, and pour it down the toilet to "flush" it. As you can imagine, with this awful heat, the smell is pretty unbearable. I'm actually kind of grossing out just thinking of it. Every 2 months or so, I have to apply and pay for a company to come by and change the chemicals / clean out the sewage tank behind the house. Ahhh.... village living!! Let me give you a taste: dark blue CARPET, old metal edged manila colored counter tops, chipped porcelain sink (not the cool kind), oatmeal colored cabinets, plaster walls with dark blue wallpaper (complete with tiny white flowers and a heinous border at the top). The hubby took the walls down to the studs with his dad, insulated, and hung bead board to the ceiling. He also replaced the sink, faucet & counter tops and the corner base cabinets. He & my dad laid the tile floor. My dad hung the crown moulding & built the surround around the fridge. I painted all of the cabinets, replaced the knobs & pulls, painted the original hinges, hand-chipped the plaster off of and cleaned the brick chimney in the corner to expose the brick. I also built 6 open shelves in that corner and painted everything. With the braces the teeth hurt most of the time so I could not brush them properly, for two years. Also, they were not properly cleaned before the posts were cemented on. After a year with the braces on my orthodontist sent my parents a notice claiming he wasn't responsible for the deteriorating condition of my teeth. Before I got the braces off the three bottom teeth with the brown color had to have root canals. 25 yrs later this is how they look. After recurring infections I am having the root canals re-done and the teeth capped. Eventually I will have all the teeth capped. Insurance covers the root canals, not the caps$$$. Binjai Does The Sumatran Haka! This pose reminds me of the Polynesian traditional wardance called the haka! Us Aussies see this when the Wallabies (Australian national Rugby Union team) face off against the New Zealand All Blacks..or .the Fiji and Samoan teams. If you have not seen a Haka performed, then you have missed the most amazing and intimidating sight. Sometimes you just get lucky! Today my camera had really struggled to get focused shots of Binjai, the most beautiful Sumatran tigress - due to her constant movement, brilliant sunshine and very smeared viewing glass! I missed countless opportunities of wonderful moments with Binjai, but the really smeared glass meant that I could not get clean shots. Later on, after visiting other exhibits, I found Binjai in another part of the exhibit, where we open viewing. Here, Binjai is wrinkling her face in this perculiar grimace - this is the Flehmen reflex - the tiger is drawing the scent to a sensitive organ on the roof of her mouth, called Jacobson's Organ. Many animals have this organ - all big cats, horses, antelopes, zebra etc. Binjai is checking the status of Ramalon - several drops of urine contain lots of chemical information that describe who and what the animal is - including sex, age and condition of health. A male big cat will check the urine of a female to determine if she is in heat or not. If yes, the male will not leave the female's side until she accepts him and allows mating. For big cats, coupling can happen every 20 min or so, for days at a time. The scent of Isha and Satu is probably still present - Binjai cannot see them of course, but it will take awhile yet for every sign of them is gone. Melbourne Zoo has a wonderful enclosure for the tigers - it is styled very much as Sumatran rainforest, with lots of trees, and even a pond to swim and play in. With the wonderful two yo cubs Isha and Satu now sent to Western Plains Zoo, Binjai, 6 yo, and the resident male, Ramalon, aged 13 yo have more time during the day in the exhibit area. Melb Zoo staff are taking part in a proper preservation program for Sumatran wildlife - not just joining an international captive breeding program (although they do, and that is vital given the parlous state of Sumatran tigers in the wild) - they actively buy back land in Sumatra with the intent to rehabilitate the land as a wildlife preserve, to give animals such as the tiger and the Sumatran Orang-utan a chance to flourish again. Little jaguar and his mother. Jaguar cubs are beautiful creatures that can be found in the Amazon jungle, and some parts of the Americas. Most people do not realize that jaguar cubs are actually born blind. They stay in a blind state for up to two weeks and totally depend upon the mother jaguar to provide the food that they need to survive. Many people have a difficult time distinguishing the difference between a leopard and a jaguar. The reason for this is they have similar fur color but upon closer inspection their spots are much different. Once a jaguar cub's eyes fully develop they will actually have very good eyesight and are able to take in more light than other creatures in order to hunt in the dark. Jaguar cubs are known for feasting on a daily diet of fish, turtles, lizards, alligators and even wild boars. Jaguar cubs learn how to efficiently hunt on the ground but they have been known to also hunt from cliffs, hills and even trees. Overall, jaguars are known for being very methodical hunters and possess a lot of patience when hunting. More often than not jaguar cubs are born in the middle of the rainy season and they will keep with the pack until they are more than two years old and can live independently. The only time a male and female jaguar ever interact is for the purpose of mating. A female jaguar can give birth to up to four jaguar cubs within a 100 day time frame. Jaguars are known for being very territorial and can have a territory from just a few miles to several hundred square miles. The biggest threat to jaguar cubs are actually anacondas. Since jaguars are mostly seen in the Amazon jungle, they are exposed to anacondas quite a bit whenever they are near streams or rivers. The anaconda lays in hiding waiting for the Jaguar to be completely submerged in the water and then the anaconda attacks. The main method that the Anacondas uses is suffocation. Jaguar cubs are known for having a high mortality rate due to infection issues from the food that they eat. If the prey that the parents bring is old, then there is a good chance that the meat contains maggots which then can infect the jaguar cub with all kinds of diseases. Another interesting fact about jaguars is that their roar is not typical of a large cat. Their roar actually sounds more like a cough. Meet Helen -- Our Special Needs Kitten We were walking through our town the other night and we saw this feral kitten sitting on a step near the center of town. We've seen her before and always wondered what her story was, as she was clearly different in some way from the other feral cats. We couldn't quite figure out what was different though. When we ran across her again on Wednesday night we knew something was wrong because half her face was covered in dried blood. We decided we'd better try to catch her and see what was going on. After several attempts we did manage to catch her and we brought her home, with the intention of bringing her to our vet the next day. We isolated her from our other animals and started cleaning her up. The blood came off easily and seemed to just be from some scratches on her head. She wouldn't open her eyes though -- and so we assumed she had some sort of eye infection as well. Once she figured out that we were trying to help her, she was very sweet and docile. The next day I took her to the vet and explained what we had found. After thoroughly examining her, Dr. Hansen told me that it wasn't an eye infection. This little kitten didn't have any eyes at all -- she was completely blind and always would be. She is either missing the eyeballs completely or they are so atrophied that it will never be usable. Despite that, she is basically healthy and seems to be around 10-12 weeks old. She has some parasites that we're dealing with, but no other major health problems were detected, which is a blessing. We've named this little one Helen, as in Helen Keller. We're not sure if she will be a permanent resident with us or not. We need to see how she adapts to our house and our other animals. We may see about giving her to a family that has a single level house and maybe a few less animals....but we'll see. In the meantime, we'll give her lots of love while we get rid of her parasite problem and acclimate her to our home. I'm sure I'll be taking lots of photos of her too. Day 019 - July 11 This is the face (or half-face, rather) of a petrified lady. Granted, I am loads cleaner than yesterday's shot, but what you also see here is terror. Intense terror. Tomorrow I have an interview. I will be on my own taking the bus there & back, something I have never done before. The location of the job place is somewhere I have never visited or seen. Riding the bus alone scares the shit out of me. Walking around a strange area alone scares the shit out of me. The interview itself will NOT scare the shit out of me, but by the time I arrive you can bet I will be out of breath, on edge, and sweaty. Today, I must prepare my print portfolio. I'm on my way out the door to find an art supply place & a print shop. But first, with this towel on my head, I will upload this photo, drink 1 cup of coffee (with too much cream), and quickly put together a CD of my most best design shit. Wish me luck. 99/365 my dad bought a house about a block from our apartment. yesterday he(i) got the keys. today i started cleaning. i owe him a bit of money and instead of paying him back i am getting everything ready for him to move in. they pervious occupants left a ton of shit and did not clean at all. today i went to target and stocked up on supplies... then i worked on the kitchen: i took apart the inside of the fridge/freezer and cleaned/sanitized everything, cleaned the counters, sink, stove, walls.... scrubbed the nooks and crannies, threw out junk and then swept and mopped the floor. then i came home to eat and now i am going to work. on friday i leave for humboldt. matt is going to help my dad move while i am gone. w09p Best- Jody's workday I chose to photograph a typical work day of a custodian at South Central College. People think they know what it is custodians do, but it is so much more than what people generally observe, such as cleaning floors, washing windows, and stocking towels in the restrooms. I wanted to capture some of the other duties they are responsible for during their busy days at work that are important and not obvious or stereotypical. Jody was an excellent subject to photograph because she was very unaffected by the camera and thought it was an interesting project. She freely gave me her schedule for the day and I photographed her intermittently for 6 hours. Her coworkers were not as comfortable being photograhed, so I took very few shots with them in the frame and did not use any for the assignment. One photo shows Jody leaving for her daily route to the Post Office and to Mankato State University. She invited me along, but I was unable to take the time to do so. I also have a shot of her checking in all of the college delivery packages. She is responsible to check them in, complete paperwork, process invoices, and make the deliveries within the building. This is no easy task and requires her to do some detective work to correctly match the package with the right person or department on campus. The photo listed as Best is my favorite one because it captures a typical circumstance they deal with daily, known as "the interruption". Just as Jody was on garbage patrol that had to be done quickly due to an event on campus, she receives a radio call to go to another part of the building for an urgent task. She returned 10 minutes later to resume garbage patrol along with her coworker. She explained to me that they are frequently called away to other tasks throughout their workday. It is an expectation that our custodians complete all of their regular tasks along with absorbing all the extra tasks a day can bring. Our custodians are responsible for so many daily tasks in keeping the college running smoothly and I hope these photos are informative in broadening the perspective of their duties. I admire their work ethic, positive attitude, and the speed at which they do their tasks (which some blurry photos have captured!) 2. By observing these photos you might conclude that Jody works alone, which is, of course, not the case. She has many coworkers during the day and does many projects along side them, but since they were not excited about being photographed, they are not included in this sampling. Two of the photos are tasks that Jody does complete by herself daily. The shot of Jody going on her daily route was shot horizontally to try to capture her surroundings of the delivery door and garbage compactor, which gives the viewer context. The ISO was set at 800, the White Balance at Sun, and F stop 11. I wanted to get the environment in focus here and am happy with the contrast of the bright white snow and the black compactor. I did some test shots while waiting for her to come outside, which helped in getting the right settings. My shutter speed was 1/300, so she is clearly in focus as she walked super fast to the car. The shot of Jody reconciling deliveries and paperwork is also horizontal, and I tried to capture a few elements within the receiving room, such as the shovels and the Hazard Poster. This gives the viewer a better overall perception of the task and where she is than the tighter shot I took of just her and the packages. This was taken with ISO 800, White Balance set at incondescent, f5.6, and 1/20th shutter speed. Not much natural light comes into this area, but I did not use a flash and the settings compensated for this. For this picture I chose vertical since I did not want much background here. Just wide enough so you can see the task at hand, but close up view of Jody and her radio. You can see how intently she is listening to the call to discern where to go. It was quite noisy in the hallway because it was career day with about 900 students on campus, so listening was a challenge! Again, 800 ISO, WB incandescent, F8, and 1/15th shutter speed. Thank heavens she was standing still so this could be in focus! I really like how the natural light from the windows to the left of frame gives such good color, and very little shadow. I think it is very complimentary to the subject, which was a consideration I had in which pictures to feature. Lessons learned with with this assignment are the importance of scoping out the area you are going to shoot the subject in so you can do test shots and refine your settings. After many blurry pictures of sweeping, I learned how to make adjustments so the shutter speed would better stop the action so the subject was in focus. Northleach wool was recognised throughout Europe as the finest quality, commanding the highest prices at the market in Calais. The town's wool merchants celebrated their wealth by rebuilding and embellishing the simple twelfth-century church, turning it into the 'Cathedral of the Cotswolds'. A chancel was added in the fourteenth century, a nave, aisles and sacristy in the following century, and a tower circa 1380-1400. The magnificent two-storey porch, complete with intricate buttresses and pinnacles, and decorated with carvings of a cat playing a fiddle for dancing rats, dates from circa 1480 and is a "perfect late-Gothic composition" according to Simon Jenkins. Inside, the thirteenth-century font has carvings of angels playing musical instruments including a flute, taber, viol and naker (an early kettledrum). But the chief attraction inside the church is the best collection of medieval memorial brasses in the country, commemorating the local wool merchants turned church benefactors.
