Jaguar cubs are beautiful creatures that can be found in the Amazon jungle, and some parts of the Americas.

Most people do not realize that jaguar cubs are actually born blind. They stay in a blind state for up to two weeks and totally depend upon the mother jaguar to provide the food that they need to survive. Many people have a difficult time distinguishing the difference between a leopard and a jaguar. The reason for this is they have similar fur color but upon closer inspection their spots are much different. Once a jaguar cub's eyes fully develop they will actually have very good eyesight and are able to take in more light than other creatures in order to hunt in the dark.

Jaguar cubs are known for feasting on a daily diet of fish, turtles, lizards, alligators and even wild boars. Jaguar cubs learn how to efficiently hunt on the ground but they have been known to also hunt from cliffs, hills and even trees. Overall, jaguars are known for being very methodical hunters and possess a lot of patience when hunting.

More often than not jaguar cubs are born in the middle of the rainy season and they will keep with the pack until they are more than two years old and can live independently. The only time a male and female jaguar ever interact is for the purpose of mating. A female jaguar can give birth to up to four jaguar cubs within a 100 day time frame. Jaguars are known for being very territorial and can have a territory from just a few miles to several hundred square miles.

The biggest threat to jaguar cubs are actually anacondas. Since jaguars are mostly seen in the Amazon jungle, they are exposed to anacondas quite a bit whenever they are near streams or rivers. The anaconda lays in hiding waiting for the Jaguar to be completely submerged in the water and then the anaconda attacks. The main method that the Anacondas uses is suffocation.

Jaguar cubs are known for having a high mortality rate due to infection issues from the food that they eat. If the prey that the parents bring is old, then there is a good chance that the meat contains maggots which then can infect the jaguar cub with all kinds of diseases. Another interesting fact about jaguars is that their roar is not typical of a large cat. Their roar actually sounds more like a cough.

We were walking through our town the other night and we saw this feral kitten sitting on a step near the center of town. We've seen her before and always wondered what her story was, as she was clearly different in some way from the other feral cats. We couldn't quite figure out what was different though. When we ran across her again on Wednesday night we knew something was wrong because half her face was covered in dried blood. We decided we'd better try to catch her and see what was going on.

After several attempts we did manage to catch her and we brought her home, with the intention of bringing her to our vet the next day. We isolated her from our other animals and started cleaning her up. The blood came off easily and seemed to just be from some scratches on her head. She wouldn't open her eyes though -- and so we assumed she had some sort of eye infection as well. Once she figured out that we were trying to help her, she was very sweet and docile.

The next day I took her to the vet and explained what we had found. After thoroughly examining her, Dr. Hansen told me that it wasn't an eye infection. This little kitten didn't have any eyes at all -- she was completely blind and always would be. She is either missing the eyeballs completely or they are so atrophied that it will never be usable. Despite that, she is basically healthy and seems to be around 10-12 weeks old. She has some parasites that we're dealing with, but no other major health problems were detected, which is a blessing.

We've named this little one Helen, as in Helen Keller. We're not sure if she will be a permanent resident with us or not. We need to see how she adapts to our house and our other animals. We may see about giving her to a family that has a single level house and maybe a few less animals....but we'll see. In the meantime, we'll give her lots of love while we get rid of her parasite problem and acclimate her to our home. I'm sure I'll be taking lots of photos of her too.
