Pump House - North Pine River

The Pump House was built in 1955 as part of the construction of the Lake Kurwongbah Dam. It pumps water uphill into Lake Kurwongbah from the North Pine River to keep the Dam topped up.

Lake Kurwongbah was oriiginally built to supply water to the Australian Paper Manufacturers (APM) Petrie Mill - now known as the Amcor Cartonboard Petrie Mill.

Today if you walk along the Dam Wall at Kurwongbah you'll often see a mass of air bubbling up to the lake surface. This is because the Pump House is operating, transferring water into Lake Kurwongbah. (It's also a good reason not to swim in the river near the Pump House!)

Our little kitchen

This kitchen is pretty small, and may not ultimately be that much fun to cook in, but I love it, and like what Kelly's done to build it out. I think it's fun having some of the stuff exposed on the shelf and counter tops, and dig our micro, efficient appliances (check out the drawer dishwasher!). The fridge was originally where the oven is, at the left end, under the counter. Our landlord installed an oven for Kelly's baking hobby, and moved the fridge to the other side of the room, where it awaits a cabinet to house it. Our freezer is down the hall in a closet. It's a little different... but it's working well so far!

This is perhaps my favorite national presentation at this Biennale. Very interesting concept coming from Czech and Slovak Republic, dealing with ordinary people's lives and habits seen through their refrigerators. I had so much fun in this pavilion. at first I didn't realize what's going on, and just when I wanted to get out of yet another wanna-be-catchy-and-super-interesting-but-at-the-same-time-cruelly-minimalistic national pavilion, I noticed that the structure in front of me was actually a row of ordinary domestic refrigerators (my architecture hungry mind didn't let me comprehend that right from the start)! then, what the hell.... then, you read the notes placed on the fridges' doors, and realize the whole point of the show. presenting different families, each with a different social status, income, number of members, marriage status, and other facts, through the supplies in their refrigerators. I couldn't stop laughing, luckily for me (and unfortunately for Czech and Slovak Rep) I was alone in there, so I could laugh as much as I wanted. I was thrilled with the idea. then I started opening each and every one of those refrigerators and inspecting different produce. To my great surprise I saw occasional notes in there saying "item stolen" or "item expired" or "item irreplaceable", then I started laughing even harder! Considering that some of those fridges were quite smelly, because of rotten vegetables, cheeses and other goodies, I guess there was a respectable number of hungry visitors, hahahah (including me). but I liked the idea and the exhibition too much to eat it...
And now you all wonder what does this all have to do with architecture? Honestly, not much. But, since this year's theme is "Architecture beyond building" we can stretch the meaning of architecture infinitely. it could be architecture of a single family or architecture of single human life seen through the aspects of economy, customs, food, urban context etc. whatever the point of view, this is an interesting social experiment. and fun. just go and smell those fridges! hahahah... ...... ...

This was one of those days where I just could not motivate myself even to the simple task of finding a good picture. I did, however, write for two hours first thing this morning and came out with what I feel is a pretty good article, but the rest of the day wasn't so productive. It seems like when I shiver a lot from the cold, I get really tired. I turned up the heat, and it was warmer than it has been, so I may be trying to fight a flu or something. Anyway, the way a creative person deals with being cold, tired, and a bit down, is to create something out of all of it... hence today's poem.

Trip Day One: Monday, July 13th.

We left here and drove through Central New Jersey to 87 North. I realized I was driving part of the way exactly how I used to drive to my ex-boyfriends' house. That was weird, only in the way that things from your past make you think about where you've been and where you're going kind of way. :-)

Speaking of weird, we then went up to New Paltz, where I've lived on 2 separate occasions. Once I lived up at Mohonk Mountain House where I worked, and another time I lived in town with a previous boyfriend (who I met at Mohonk) and worked at a warehouse. It is even trendier than I remembered. I think we parked on the street Ben and I lived and I might have recognized the house of apartments, but I can't be sure. Years of brain damage have made it impossible to figure out anything anymore.

We then drove up into the Adirondack Mountains. It was going to rain and we were beat so I put in a search for a motel on the GPS when we stopped in Chestertown, NY. There was a place right up the road and the woman was super friendly when I called. Yes, they took dogs but no, they had no cabin or motel room available...but wait! She had a camper/trailer out back if we didn't mind that or need a refrigerator. How much? I asked and the price was right.

Had to take advantage of the white trashiness for a self-portrait. LOL. I'm not really drinking beer, don't worry.

Believe it or not, I started drinking beer only after college. I guess I let my parents brainwash me into thinking alcohol is bad. Until this day, I would have to sneak into the kitchen when everyone's asleep in order to have my poison.

Hi-Chew is my favorite Japanese candy. I always search the 100 yen shops and convenience stores for rare/regional flavors. These smaller packs were found at a 100 yen shop in Kyoto. As you can see from the effervescent bubbles, these are soda flavors. They have little crystals in them that make it resemble soda somewhat. Overall, quite tasty.

Right after taking this shot, the homeless guy down the street was now walking towards me. Friendly guy.

Now I am usually cold and ignore homeless people. He seemed harmless and in the spirit of the manger scene I stayed to speak to him.

He proceeded to tell me that he visited a man who had been sick and was getting better and that the man was really quite discouraged with life in general.
He encouraged the man with stories about The Lord who is responsible for all things.
And went on to say he cut his finger when repairing a refrigerator and who do you think healed his finger? Because The Lord is in charge of your immune system and he healed his finger, which he showed me and I noticed his finger nails were exceptionally long, but clean. The fact that he only had three teeth was a bit disconcerting. The pony tail tied up in rope, a bit odd. The fact that I actually stood there and listened to the guy's rant, so out of character for me.
It wasn't until he asked me for a hug, and I let him hug me, and that the hug lasted way too long, that I started to question my judgement.
He said he wanted to give me a CD. A Guys and Dolls CD.
Oh no I said. I already have that one, which is the truth.
I said I had to go and walked quickly to my car.

I drove several streets over and thought okay who can I text and tell them of this macabre incident. Is there something about shooting manger scenes that attracts odd encounters I wondered. These scenes do present unexpected entertainment. The other day I kneeled in dog poo in front of a manger scene> I learned that carrying Wet Ones in your car is a good thing and today I learned that the Lord created my immune system.

my sister comes down in the middle of the night 5 or 6 times and just eats. then she complains about being fat. this is me ensuring that there is still food for the other three people who live in the house and that we don't have to put up with her bitching
