Our 2"x 4" construction is meant to last and prevent bounce. * We DO NOT use any other size for the hole. 6" is the ACA Regulation, NOT 4", NOT 5" or any other size. * Beware of the cheap boards around the Internet. Admiral Broeren - Giant Yellow Cedar Admiral Broeren is located in the Memekay Valley. Take the Big Tree Main off the Island Highway before Sayward, British Columbia on Vancouver Island. Follow the signs to Admiral Broeren until you run out of road on spur N1800. Walk along a trail to the viewing platform. Admiral Broeren is listed as number two in the Yellow Cedar category in the British Columbia Big Tree Registry. 34 feet 1 inch in circumference and 154 feet high. You better hurry if you want to see these last examples of giant old growth trees. As I was driving up the Island Highway logging trucks were passing south with the remains of trees as big as Admiral Broeren - some were single log loads. The old growth trees are being stripped out as quickly as possible before they can be protected - so get your hiking boots on before they are gone forever. Sunlit Dorsal View - Red Spotted Purple / White Admiral hybrid Butterfly Great shot showing his markings - very helpful to classify him as a hybrid! The White Admiral and Red Spotted Purple Butterflies are both subspecies of "Limenitis arthemis" and commonly interbreed or hybridize. This can result in many unique looking offspring! This little guy has the best of both worlds --- the band of the White Admiral, but slightly less pronounced and iridescent instead of white; and the red spots (dorsal AND ventral) of the Red Spotted Purple. Cooler I was glad to see the drink cooler at the Sogo supermarket in Hong Kong after walking (and sweating so much) in the hot humid summer weather. I had such a difficult time trying to choose what to drink cause there were so many new things to choose from and I kinda wanted to try all of them and also that I didn't quite understand the Japanese writing on some of them so I didn't actually know what they were..... XD What On Earth?? SOOC ~ (straight out of the camera, no editing.) It seems that someone in our household has found a new way to consume their chicken noodle soup! Sweet And Sour Pork Balls + Recipe Although cooking daily meals is the norm. There are times when I have to ponder in advance what’s for lunch or dinner. At such time, the mind will always be drifting to what’s available in the freezer or fresh boxes. Today the packet of frozen ground pork and canned pineapple were handy and hence this dish. My version: Recipe: Ingredients for making meat balls: 500 g minced pork 1 egg white 1 ? tbsp corn flour 1 tbsp soy sauce ? tsp sea salt or to taste ? tsp pepper ? tsp sesame oil Sauce ingredients: 1 tbsp chopped garlic 1 chilli - sliced 1 onion - sliced ? can of pineapple rings – cut into bite-size, more if you like Some pineapple juice from the can 5 tbsp tomato sauce [ketchup] Salt, sugar and ajinomoto to taste Method: 1. Mix all the ingredients, for meat balls, well to a sticky paste, shaped into balls, roll in flour and fried in hot oil till golden. Set aside and drained. 2. Fry garlic till light golden in colour, add in onion and cook till it is translucent. 3. Add in pineapple slices, tomato sauce, pineapple juice, chilli and seasonings, stir to mix well. The sauce should have a thick consistency. 4. Add back the cooked meat balls; turn the contents to coat the meat balls well. It's ready for serving. Tomato-Bacon Quiche Recipe DESCRIPTION Load up the fillings in an elegant quiche that goes together easily in a frozen deep-dish pie crust. INGREDIENTS 1 Pillsbury® Pet-Ritz® frozen deep dish pie crust 6 slices bacon, cooked, crumbled 4 medium green onions, sliced (1/4 cup) 3 medium plum (Roma) tomatoes, seeded, chopped 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 cup half-and-half 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 eggs 1/2 cup shredded Swiss cheese (2 oz) 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (2 oz) DIRECTIONS 1. Place cookie sheet on oven rack. Heat oven to 375°F. Remove crust from freezer; let stand 1 minute. Prick crust with fork. Bake on cookie sheet 9 to 11 minutes or until very light golden brown. 2. Sprinkle bacon, green onions, tomatoes, salt and pepper in crust. In medium bowl, stir together half-and-half, flour and eggs. Stir in cheeses. Pour over tomato mixture. 3. Bake on cookie sheet 25 to 30 minutes longer or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): Increase bake time in step 3 to 33 to 38 minutes. Ships Wheel The ship chandlery was a retail and source of supplies for both individual seamen and vessels. The chandler knew the needs of his local economy and was a specialist in meeting those needs, be they whaling, shipping, fishing or ship building. Contracting for provisions at the chandlery was the responsibility of the ship's agent, a man authorized by vessel owners to manage supplies and equipment, as well as repairs, freight, towage and the hiring of officers and crew. A chandler himself might serve as an agent for ships. His skill at being an information broker paying off in purchases at his shop. Lack of shipboard refrigeration inhibited variety in food stuffs for voyages, but chandlers offered salt fish and meat, hardtack, molasses, potatoes, onions and other winter vegetables, spices and flour. Rum and tobacco were also in stock. Clothing, boots and blankets were purchased for sailors who often bought them while at sea, and supplies for the ship itself ranged from navigational instruments to lanterns, buoys, logs and inkstands. Needles, beeswax and canvas were available for use in repairs aboard ship as well as for the sail maker at home. In addition, marine hardware, paints, oils and compounds were available. Our ship chandlery is used as a location to display a large number of objects from the museum's collection. All sorts of items that would have been available in a nineteenth-century chandlery are on view, from anchor balls and lights to bomb lance guns, hoops and caulking irons. Mystic Seaport Mystic Ct. Five-spice powder is a Chinese flavoring, while the ketjap manis (sweet soy sauce) comes from Indonesia. The frying of the spice paste is characteristic of Malaysian cooking and creates a complex flavor that will make these some of the best wings you've ever tasted. Note that although the recipe may look a little complicated, the actual preparation time was only about 20 minutes. ALSO note that I chose to use 10 seeded jalapenos and 1 seeded habanero and while flavorful, these weren't even close to what I personally would consider particularly spicy. Next time I'm not going to deseed the peppers (but that's just me). These things were MIGHTY tasty regardless. Incredible flavor. Ingredients: 16 whole chicken wings 3 large shallots, peeled 6 cloves garlic, peeled 1 piece (1 inch) fresh ginger 2 to 10 Thai, Serrano, or small jalapeno chiles, seeded (for hotter wings leave the seeds in) 1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (ketjap manis) or 1 tablespoon each regular soy sauce and molasses 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder (found in the ethnic section of most grocery stores) **Personal Note: After having tried this recipe, I decided that a little salt and a couple squeezes of lime juice would be a nice addition to the ingredients making up the marinating "paste" and will add them next time. The lime juice would go beautifully with the flavors already there and would help to thin the paste just slightly so that it could better coat all surfaces of the chicken. Directions: Rinse the wings under cold running water, then drain and blot dry with paper towels. Make 2 or 3 deep slashes, to the bone, in the meaty part of each wing. Place in a large bowl and refrigerate while you prepare the spice paste. Combine the shallots, garlic, ginger, and chiles in a food processor and process to a smooth paste. Add 1/4 cup of the oil, the soy sauces, and five-spice powder and process again until smooth. Heat the remaining 1/4 cup oil in a wok or small, heavy skillet over medium heat. Add the spice paste and cook, stirring constantly, until thick, brown, and very flavorful, 8 to 12 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool completely. Add the cooled spice paste to the chicken and turn the wings to coat thoroughly. Cover and let marinate, in the refrigerator, for at least 6 hours or as long as 24 (the longer the better). Preheat the grill to medium-high. When ready to cook, oil the grill grate. Arrange the wings on the hot grate and grill, turning with tongs until the thicker wing sections are no longer pink near the bone, 12 to 16 minutes in all. Ice bar minus5° is the ice bar in Auckland. It's basically a large freezer kept around minus 5 degrees and everything inside - the bar, the walls, the benches - is made of ice. You get one complimentary drink (the glass is made of ice) that is vodka based. All the ice is actually shipped from Canada and shaped in New Zealand. It is changed every three months. You are allowed to lick the ice if you want but think of how many others have done the same. i couldn't take a picture inside the ice bar. It costs $25 and you can't use your own camera. There is a window to look into minus5° from the bar next door where I took this picture. Before entering, you are givien a pair of uggs (and paper footwear inside for hygenic reason), a warm winter jacket and a pair of mitts which we are not suppose to be taken off inside. Something you only have to do once. Allen street door of preserve24 A massive double freezer door is inset into the existing glass wall on the Allen Street side. Within one of these doors is the regularly used pedestrian door. The large double door will be opened when the freezer reliquary is delivered to the site and also in the summer months when weather permits. The surrounding glass reveals traces of the wonders within, while the scale and craftsmanship of the doors invites the curious and acts as a threshold inviting one to enter into the Preserve24 environment.
