Sovereignty and Revolution in the Iberian Atlantic This book takes a bold new look at both Spain's and Portugal's New World empires in a trans-Atlantic context. It argues that modern notions of sovereignty in the Atlantic world have been unstable, contested, and equivocal from the start. It shows how much contemporary notions of sovereignty emerged in the Americas as a response to European imperial crises in the age of revolutions. Jeremy Adelman reveals how many modern-day uncertainties about property, citizenship, and human rights were forged in an epic contest over the very nature of state power in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Sovereignty and Revolution in the Iberian Atlantic offers a new understanding of Latin American and Atlantic history, one that blurs traditional distinctions between the "imperial" and the "colonial." It shows how the Spanish and Portuguese empires responded to the pressures of rival states and merchant capitalism in the eighteenth century. The emergence of Latin American nations--indeed many of our contemporary notions of sovereignty--was the effect, and not the cause, of the breakdown of European empires. Before, during, and after Cleaning up the hood on our 1991 Range Rover. You can see the hood going through the different stages of cleaning. First we used rubbing compound, then a cleaner wax. Once the hood had been buffed-up a lot, the paint turned out pretty nicely. Wax Eye Wax Eye or White-Eye has a conspicuous white ring around the eye, thus giving the bird it's name. The head and upperparts are olive green with a grey band across the back which extends around the chest. Red Jumping Spider [Salticidae] Jumped On My Pants Not caring enough to look straight at me, this tiny reddish jumping spider decided to leap onto my pants while I was sitting down to take a closeup picture of this guy. We found this on the damp ground along the bushy trail of Venus Drive, Singapore. Luckily we did not step on it or we could have pictured a mash of squashed spider body. One thing I do notice about jumping spiders, unlike other spider species, is that some would be curious enough to stay put and look at you or even leap over to your hand (and even in front of the camera lens) with instinctive courage. And yes, some jumping spiders are jerky and can instantly leap out of sight if danger is spotted. Seated in my Calvin Klein tuxedo pants and silk suspenders with my new TNT Perry Ellis black dress socks A seated photo crossed leg showin my new Perry Ellis black dress socks that have a stripe down the side and are see through on the sides. What's in your bag? I was curious what's in peoples camera bag(s). And not just the people with a more than passing int rest, but everyone. Hobbyist, professionals, and the people that only dust off their gear for holidays and special events. Mine is pretty simple, these pictures are of my backpack kit for my Canon 20d. The bag itself is a Lowepro Computrekker AW. It is a great bag, grabbed it before I left for China. It took me the whole trip to lock down the layout. But now I have to were I could find everything in the dark. The only part of the backpack I don't like is the tripod holder on the very back. It makes the back pack too thick/deep to use in public places. I figured out a work around, I can attach it to the side w/ the use of a reusable zip ties. S learned his lesson, and he's a better man for it now. {{{{ UPDATE: }}}}} I had to add an updated comment since this picture is viewed so many times a day. The wart actually came back after the surgery, BUT not as strong- and is NOW GONE. The Dr. did not get all the tentacles close to the blood source, but my boyfriend eliminated the last of the wart using a combination of the following: He applied over-the-counter acid to the wound, then suffocated it's air source (the little black spots) by keeping Duct tape on it for about 1 week. Then he would do some small scale self-surgery with a knife and tweezers- getting rid of the (very small amounts of) suffocated skin that the tape had yielded. Afterwards he would soak the foot in warm water and white vinegar. Then he would start the process over again, not giving it time to heal- as that skin was what was protecting the wart. There is now a barely dectectable pit on his foot and the wart has not come back after over 6 months. The process took about 2 months, but his wart had been given 10 years to grow that deep. Hopefully the rest of you who are presumedly looking up this picture because you have such a wart are in better shape than that. The point is that no one approach worked on it's own, he needed to use a combination of all the techniques he found while researching, but getting at these things early is best so that you don't have to do this. (7) Baking soda + vinegar 317/365: This morning in the shower I used a baking soda paste to wash my hair, and then after I rinsed it out, I did a rinse using a little bit of rice vinegar and a cup of water. I read about this just the other day and really, all I wanted was something to make my shower less boring (showers are REALLY BORING, did you know that?). And it worked really well! My hair was awesome today, smooth and not greasy, etc. This is notable only because my hair is usually a grease bomb after just one day (especially a day like today, where we went hiking around in the hot sun). I'll have to see if it holds up for a few more days, then maybe I can stop using shampoo altogether. Sour milk instructions on an old box of baking soda. As a Black man, he has fought and won the most important job of public service in a country, possibly the world, that only granted full enfranchisement (full voting rights) a little less than 60 years' ago. The political writer and activist, Andrew Sullivan, rightly said it is 'the arc of 300 years of difference', of why this moment in world history is so important. Who could have guessed that a Black man could become the presidential of a country such as the United States of America?! I would like to remember those who lived, suffered, fought, campaigned, took offence, stood strong against, refused to accept the status quo, died or were killed, that brought this truly awesome, remarkable to fruition! Only yesterday, the US marked Dr Martin Luther King Day, an annual holiday that honours the life, struggle and sad murder of the Civil Rights leader, and which ushered in a phenominal event. There are also the nameless masses. Not to be forgotten. Indeed, the inauguration was held in the arena of Washington monuments that symbolise the freedoms for which the country fought against imperial power, buildings erected, brick by brick, with the blood, sweat and tears of slaves. As the forty-fourth president, Barack Obama offered his inaugural address, already being dissected by political pundits, who state Obama spoke 2401 words on the first day of his posting as president: 'My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and co-operation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation Signs, Cheboygan, Michigan For over twenty years I worked close to this Midwest town, during that time I took many photographs of the place such as this one. Cheboygan Michigan, is, I guess typical of so many small towns and country areas in Midle America, I never visited it in winter where the winters are hard and the lake freezes over. For me it was the buzz of insects the whine of tree frogs the smells of the ground, the sandy soil, the old signs and rundown barns. These were my world, and became a part of my art, it has taken the best part of ten years to look for different subjects. It took many visits, during many summers to gain what I did from the Michigan and other midwestern landscapes, I had often been drawn to the place. At first everything seemed so crude and temporary compared to Europe and the places I knew. There was something there in the summer's heat, I don't and still don't know exactly what I was after painting and photographing it the way I did. All these years later I return to these images and see how they fit together and how they may say something about my experience of these places. I hope that some of them touch you, whether you know America or have never been...to me this is another country and one I often think about. I shall return someday. The origin of the barber pole is associated with the service of bloodletting. During medieval times, barbers performed surgery on customers as well as tooth extractions. The original pole had a brass basin at the top (representing the vessel in which leeches were kept) and bottom (representing the basin which received the blood). The pole itself represents the staff that the patient gripped during the procedure to encourage blood flow. In the Middle Ages in France, a decree was issued banning facial hair in men. This led to the barber community's becoming more organized. Later, their role was defined by the College de Saint Come, established in Paris circa 1210, as academic surgeons of the long robe and barber surgeons of the short robe. The red and white stripes symbolize the bandages used during the procedure: red for the blood-stained and white for the clean bandages. Originally, these bandages were hung on the pole to dry after washing. As the bandages blew in the wind, they would twist together to form the spiral pattern similar to the stripes in the modern day barber pole. The barber pole became emblematic of the barber/surgeon's profession. Later the cloths were replaced by a painted wooden pole of red and white stripes. The camera and the artist (set) about the relationship between photographic images and those painted. I hope to use examples from my own practice where photography has been used in both photo-realistic work as well as illustration and other art-forms. I have used a number of artists whose work I have studied and look at the way photography informed and influenced their visual expression. As I have scanned a lot of my old work I'm well aware that photography has played and still plays a significant role for me as an artist, indeed in recent years these two practices have overlapped and are no longer distinct paths. In the more sympathetic climate of today, who knows what might have been retained? The 70's were an era of new life with many new industries moving in, especially along Tower Road North, and looking towards the future we saw four new schools being built. The biggest by far of all of these was the Grange Comprehensive School, which combined the boys school at Woodstock and the girls school in Hanham Road. The school was built on fields belonging to Grimsbury Farm but the access is via the new bridge from Tower Road North. 1971 Early in 1970, John Seymour-Williams had received an offer to buy a piece of land near Warmley House which contained the giant statue of Neptune. The two and a half acres of land had been valued at 500 pounds and the owner of the caravan park was prepared to pay 1,300 pounds. A new scheme would have entailed the demolition of Neptune as a road was needed to service the land. The main opponent of this act of vandalism was Dr. Ian McDonald, former Chairman of Warmley R.D.C. He enlisted the aid of S.W.K Morgan, Managing Director of Imperial Smelting, Avonmouth, and with others formed a committee to oppose the scheme and acquire the land. In 1971 John Seymour-Williams had been persuaded to give Neptune and a thin strip of land to the council but the remaining land was still for sale. In due course with the support of both the council and the zinc industry, the land was secured from the hands of the developers. The statue of the sea god that once stood in the centre of the thirteen acre lake had now become a land-lubber, as the retaining dam had been destroyed and the lake drained. Ivy had completely covered this giant and foxes and birds had made their homes around him. By 1974, with alot of hard work from a group of Venture Scouts, Neptune was stripped of the ivy and once more stood guard, towering over the site. Much more work was yet to be done as huge cracks had appeared in his legs and his arms and his trident had disappeared. The important thing was that Neptune had been saved. More recent research has shown that Neptune is the largest garden statue in Western Europe and he is also described by the concrete industry as the oldest concrete statue in the country. it is strange that this 26 feet high Warmley giant is almost unknown by the people of Siston, although he is by far the oldest resident of the parish, at nearly 250 years of age! 1972 Before the introduction of North Sea gas, 3,200 tons of Welsh coal were passing through Warmley on its way to the gasworks at Bath. The signal box had to be manned and the level crossing gates were regularly brought together to allow the diesel trains to pass. In May 1971 the Bath Gas Works closed and subsequently the single track line that provided its supply of coal became redundant. In May 1972, the lifting of the remaining track commenced, starting from the Bath end of the line and working towards Mangotsfield and the north. By September, the huge crane had lifted whole sections of track and sleepers onto railway wagons, just as if they were a giant toy train set being packed away. A small enterprising group, mourning the loss of this environmentally sound transport system, formed themselves into the Bristol Suburban Railway Society and opened their headquarters in the redundant and derelict buildings at Bitton Station. The Society originally planned to lay new track from Bitton station to Warmley signal box, but since those early days the route of the old railway line has been breached at North Common and the organisation is now looking south towards Bath to extend the line. The society has since changed its name to The Avon Valley Railway, but still takes an interest in the signal box at Warmley and has plans for a static display nearby. 1973 The Clocktower Building in Tower Road North has an interesting and varied history. It was built in the 1740s when William Champion moved to the area. For the first hundred years it was associated with the copper, brass and zinc works and is generally considered to be Champions pin factory Around 1811, the site was owned by the Davidson family who continued to produce pins at least until 1835. In 1847, stoneware goods were being manufactured and it is probable that the Clocktower Building was partially rebuilt as offices for the Pottery. Later the building was sub-let to Derhams and used as a boot factory. Then once again it was to become part of the pottery works being used as offices, carpenters shop and mounders store for Haskins Pottery. By 1969 there was no more industrial use for this 200 year old building so with funding from Warmley, Kingswood and Mangotsfield Councils and the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundations a community use for it was found... Well, I honestly don’t really have tons of uses for it, so I can’t say I love it (or like it). I have one in brown, given to me by Banzai. Also a trans-clear one from Badger (or John). The Core-burner. Seriously? Just seriously? Will designs some amazing accessories but this item was just useless, dumb, etc. I have absolutely no use for the one(s) I have. Sorry Will, I just don’t like it. Have two, one brown and gunmetal mix, and one in trans-clear and black mix. AA-12. Oh. My. God. The thing is just amazing. It’s perfectly scaled, the new drum design is A+, the sights are perfect, and it even has a grip. One thing I’m not totally sold on is the magazine, you (Will) could try making the indents smaller and add more of them. The sight is maybe my favorite part, the tiny hole in the rear sight is perfect. I have seen some products that have similar size holes and details, but they just end up looking shabby and un-clean. I even asked Will what item he was most proud of, and he said the AA-12. I have to agree, the M16A1 might top it though. I have one, traded to me by Polar_Ice in bronze. Lever action rifle. A very good, clean looking prototype. I don’t do western things, but I could use it for my brothers Sig ‘Fig, who loves shooting our 44. The lever was done pretty perfectly and the octagonal barrel is a nice touch. I have two in brown, one given to me by Badger and one from my brother. SABR. I like it, Brickarms finally added a “universal” pump-action, full stocked shotgun to the arsenal. I would have enjoyed the “Universal Pump-action” more for a name then SABR, it seems a little too space-age. My favorite part of the prototype is probably the very detailed receiver section. I have two in brown, both given to me by Badger, thank you! Oh, and one in black from John. M79 “Blooper” / ”Thumper”. Was one item that I just wasn’t expecting at all. The part that stands out to me the most is the strange looking stock that the M79 has. One thing that I don’t like about it is the size, it is quite large. If I were Will, I would take the stock down to an SGT44 stock size, then scale the rest of the prototype down along with it. A flip-up sight would also be nice. I feel like I’m complaining a little much about this one, even though I do like it very much. I received mine after Bantha asked for acouple break-down pictures of one of my heli’s, its overmolded in brown and gunmetal. M16A1. A lovely prototype, not really much to say about it. All of the important parts like the receiver, barrel, mag and stock are all extremely well done. Got it from Bantha, love the prototype. Short and sweet review ‘eh? MG34. Not really much to say about the prototype, but I do really like it. Ummm, yeah I like it. Nothing that makes me say “OmAIgAWd, n3W pRoT0tipZ 5o Cu|!!!” and nothing that makes me say “You know, he could have really done something better”. Got mine in gunmetal from John 0515 :). Flintlock pistol. I got 5 >.> Well, I don’t really do revolutionary war, pirates, 1500-1800 kinda of stuff. But if I was into that era, I would love it. The detail is just incredible, the trigger, black-powder tray, flint ‘n steel and all that good stuff have tons of detail and are just lovely. I only have V.1s so the length still looks pretty long. One in gunmetal, one flat silver, one flat silver with a metallic brown tray. The latter one is VERY strange (at least in my opinion) for one reason: when laid down the barrel faces to the left, instead of the right (like my other 4). One in reddish, and one in regular brown. Not too rare because of the option to buy a figure with them, but they are still gifts. V.2 AC8. Basically a production AC8, with a straighter carry handle....only in Glow in the Dark :P It also has a little trans-light green/yellow. From Badger. V.1 M203. Can’t really see any differences, but it would have to be a prototype, unless Will is starting to go GITD production items :) From John. Flame Gun. Uhh, I don’t know what the inspiration for this was, but I just don’t have a use for it. GITD, traded with my brother. KuKiri (traditional). Ooooh, a new melee weapon! The handle is quite nice, and the blades “slanting” is also very nice for being curved. Also nice in GITD. Got it from Badger, thanks man! M1A1 Carbine. Same as the production, but in brown. Could be production, but I doubt the mold was run in brown. Traded. M1917. 365.159 Laundry To Fold!!! Okay, so I have done several loads of laundry over the past week or so, and I never seem to get around to folding it and putting it away in my closet. Half of my queen-sized bed is loaded with laundry and so I (and Pepita, too, when she joins me in the mornings) am squeezed into the other half. I started to fold some of it tonight when I took this photo, but I am tired so I pooped out and left it for tomorrow... my bed is looking so inviting right now!!! Queen of the Laundry I considered this for potd but had already picked the funny camping story photo. Today was a busy cleaning day with several loads of laundry. I had folded most of it and came back into the living room with another load when I saw Edwina sandwiched in the middle of the pile. I didn't have the heart to move her. I was afraid she would move so grabbed the first camera available.
