Development partners Related, Apollo Real Estate Advisors and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group collaborated on building the 251 room hotel within the Time Warner Center. David Childs with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP was the lead architect. Hirsch-Bedner Associates was the hotel's interior designer. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group contributed $40 million for the hotel's interior finishes.

Mandarin Oriental, New York spans the 35th through 54th floors of the new Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle on Central Park South. The hotel’s 251 rooms floors have floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping views of Manhattan and Central Park.

Dale Chihuly is the creator of the two glass masterpieces installed in the hotel. He has championed the use of blown glass as a vehicle for sculpture.

The hotel entrance from West 60th Street sets a luxury tone with Italian marble and granite floors and a ceiling fixture made by Chihuly in collaboration with Waterford crystal. The chandelier weighs approximately 2,100 pounds and is comprised of 683 hand blown glass and crystal pieces.

The second installation, and the focal point at the 35th floor lobby, is Mr. Chihuly’s foray into glass gardens. Entitled Crystal Cranes, the hand blown glass sylphs (mythological creatures) are installed above a luscious garden of moss and ivy. Graceful, ice cool crystal emulates long-necked Chinese cranes rising out of an oriental moss garden in a custom-carved wood and silver vessel.

The Residences at Mandarin Oriental are located above the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, New York, in Time Warner Center. The residences begin on the 64th floor and proceed up to the top floor, the 80th. The 66 owners are treated as permanent guests of the Mandarin Oriental with full access to hotel facilities.

In March 2007 Istithmar Hotels purchased 73% of the property, buying 25% from Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and 48% from a joint venture between Apollo Real Estate and Related. The total value of the hotel for the purposes of this transaction is US$ 340 million. Istithmar Hotels FZE is part of Istithmar PJSC which is 100 percent owned by Dubai World, which is in turn is wholly owned by the Government of Dubai.

Nakheel Hotels is the new name for Istithmar Hotels after Dubai World consolidated its hotel business under one banner to create a fully integrated hotel investment company. The merged entity will remain a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dubai World group.

Mandarin Oriental Group continues to hold a 25% interest in the hotel and has secured improved terms for its long-term management contract. The Group will recognize a post tax gain of approximately US$16 million in 2007. As part of the transaction, the Group also received repayment of its outstanding mezzanine loan to the hotel of US$40 million.

In November 2009 The Real Deal reported Dubai World hired accounting firm Deloitte to restructure its U.S. liabilities including those belonging to the Jumeirah Essex House, the New York W, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and the Knickerbocker Hotel.

For the year 2010 the 248 room Mandarin Oriental, New York ran an occupancy of 69% with an average daily rate of $883 and RevPar of $612.
