Hey! You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
There is no other song like this, that sounds like this. It was born, history tells us, when Lennon discovered Dylan and pot. You're listening to 1964-era Beatles, electric guitar pop songs - classics, mind you - but before you know what a RubberSoul is, before you know Michelle or Girl, a whole album before that, is this song.
It starts out with acoustic guitar and what sounds like sifting sand in the background. Here's the (so-called) lead singer of the most popular band in the world singing "Here I stand, head in hand, turn my face to the wall." Then "If she's gone i can't go on, feeling two-foot-" -- tall? -- no, "-- small".
Eventually we get to the chorus. Try it someday. It starts out "Hey!" and then drops off a cliff down an octave. "you've got to hide your....love away". On "--way" it's distinctively english and if you try to sing like that nowadays, it's like a bad Austin Powers imitation. There's also a back-in-the-throat growl that is distinctively Lennon.
I've always heard this song in red, hence this tint.
