This is my brother Cameron. He is 17 years old and has severe disabilities. In my opinion, he looks like a normal teen despite the wheelchair... but he really is VERY medically involved. He requires 24.7 care as he has seizures frequently and stops breathing during the night, so she sleeps next to him ( and has ever since he was 2 years old). My mom is his caregiver and she plans to take care of him for the rest of her life. The problem is, my mom can't get a job when Cameron requires her to watch him 24.7 so In home care services pay my mom $10 an hour ( however she is only paid for 8 hours a day instead of the full 24 hours she actually watches him). This helps my family financially even though she would be making much more money if she were able to use her degree( she was a crime scene investigator).
Anyways, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger thinks my mom shouldn't be paid to care for Cameron. If it weren't for my mom's dedication, Cameron would require either a nurse 24.7 ( which would be much more than $10 an hour!!) OR to be put in an institution (which would cost them anywhere between 3-6times the amount they are paying my mom). My family would of course NEVER institutionalize him, but the Governor is threatening to cut his services making it difficult for my family. He also has at least 10 different medical equipment devices that would all be taken away. He could DIE without these devices that alert my mom when he stops breathing. He is also tube fed ( he has a hole in his stomach) so he would also need a new way to feed him!!
This situation is nerve wracking and insulting. My brother is NOT A BUDGET CUT, ARNOLD!!!

Advances in diabetic care :

back in the days of the beatles when my dad was diagnosed with diabetes the only way to test the sugar in his body at home was for him to pee in a jar, then take 10 drops of the pee into a dropper deposit it in a test tube. He than had to add a reagent tablet which reacted with the pee. It was fun watching it bubble up and change colour inside the test tube which became hot. This was our chemistry set.

Time went on and this new fangled thing came out where you used a lancet to jab your finger, sometimes you had to jab a couple of times before you drew blood, add a drop of the resulting blood to a stick wait until there was colour then squint as you tried to find an exact match on the side of a box.

Today life is easier you fit the pod with a wee stick thing use the spring loaded lanced to get the blood, first time every go, then just put the stick at the side of the blood , osmosis takes over and you get a number on the screen which tells you if you are naughty or good.
