Shop-Rite/ Pathmark/ Acme - Clementon, NJ

260 White Horse Pike; opened in the 60s as Shop-Rite, then became one of the first Pathmarks in 1968. At some point was sold to Acme (giving it a Super Saver-style awning), but was closed by as long ago as the late 80s. Still vacant, and quite dilapidated along with the rest of the center.

The three part reflector on the right is made from a box, a window shade, some foil and a golden foil-wrapped cake stand. On the left is my SB-600 with foil dish. Empty Swings

I couldn't open the front door this morning after the winter storm last night so I threw open the garage doors and of course the mounded snow tumbled into the garage. I slogged through drifted snow to the plowed street. The entire neighborhood was in a flurry of activity, shoveling their driveways. I wish I had gotten out before all the racket began!!

I walked down to the park and waded through waist-high drifts to the playground. As you can see above, the snow completely engulfed the seats of the two in back and and there is only a few inches to spare under the two swings in the foreground. The shadows were long & luscious and the snow pristine white ... it was also much quieter in the park, the only sound the wind whipping up the snow.

It was a wonderful storm ... so can we just move into spring now?

The ecological importance of marine algae is widely known but in shallow coastal areas the composition and structure of algal communities may be affected by different human activities. Recovery from different trampling disturbances of two competing morphological groups (i.e. macroalgae and algal turfs) and effects of macroalgal canopy removal on the dominant associated fauna were examined using controlled trampling experiments. Six months after trampling disturbance was removed, the two morphological groups closely resembled control (untrampled) conditions, both in terms of cover and canopy (%). In particular, macroalgal recovery seemed to be very rapid: the higher the impact on the system the more rapid the recovery rate. In the short-term, the removal of macroalgal fronds (i.e. canopy) caused evident changes in invertebrate and crypto-benthic fish densities although these indirect effects were species-specific. Erect macroalgae are very sensitive to disturbance and even relatively low intensities of human use may be non-sustainable for this shallow assemblage. The present findings suggest some interesting options for the management of Mediterranean rocky shallow areas. This is crucial for coastal areas that are intended to be maintained in natural condition for conservation purposes.

Building Shutters

We want each shutter to over-lap the edges by about an inch. Opening 30” width, half of that per shutter plus 1” overlap equals 16” shutter width. Three stock boards worked just right. If we needed to rip a narrow board it would have gone between full boards on the outside edges.

Install Hinges

The first shutter was positioned in place resting on the window sill. Shims located under the shutter define clearance for the shutter to swing open.

Caladiums provide the bulk of the color in this densely shaded area. They are real workhorses -- marvelous brilliant colors or whites, big and showy, carefree, pests don't seem to care for them, and best of all, they don't really require a lot of water. The ones showing here are 'Freida Hemple', 'White Queen', 'Fannie Munson', and 'White Wings'.

Brighton Beach Sun Deck

Out in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, is a long stretch of docks. Beside the docks on the sandy stretch of beach are pavilions such as this one, where visitors can shade themselves from the sun or even play chess at one of the permanent chess tables.

This day was breezy and not warm for sun bathing. We walked down the docks and photographed the people coming and going. No one was interested in the chess tables that day, but I can imagine that on a hot summer day in July those pavilions are a crowded with heated sunbathers...

Deck chairs with little sun shades seemed to be very much en vogue in Sandown, Isle of Wight. I don't know what's wrong with tying knots in your hankerchief and putting it on your head but hey, who am I to argue? They look cute and it was a perfect day for them.

I was writing a presentation in the library this afternoon. As the clouds coming in from the South, I closed the window blind to make the light look more interesting: the lights and shadows created by the horizonal lines on the window leave their mark on the vertical window blinds.

I love it, Easily my favourate photo of the day.

This is typical of the studio setup I am using at the moment. When using the white background I have started to use the slave strobes to illuminate the background as I found it wasn't white enough using onlly the softboxes.

The roller blind is on its last legs as it is of fabric material and does not like being walked on. Hopefully for the next shoot we will have upgraded to a vinyl backdrop system.
