Martin Lee and Bruce Shlain's exhaustively researched and astonishing account-part of it gleaned from secret government files-tells how the CIA became obsessed with LSD as an espionage weapon during the early l950s and launched a massive covert research program, in which countless unwitting citizens were used as guinea pigs. Though the CIA was intent on keeping the drug to itself, it ultimately couldn't prevent it from spreading into the popular culture; here LSD had a profound impact and helped spawn a political and social upheaval that changed the face of America. From the clandestine operations of the government to the escapades of Timothy Leary, Abbie Hoffman, Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, Allen Ginsberg, and many others, Acid Dreams provides an important and entertaining account that goes to the heart of a turbulent period in our history. Scottish superstar Sean Connery (1930) won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and also a BAFTA Award. He is best known as the original secret agent 007, starring in seven James Bond films between 1962 and 1983. His film career also includes such notable films as Marnie (1964), The Name of the Rose (1986), The Untouchables (1987), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). Thomas Sean Connery was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, in 1930. He was the son of Euphemia 'Effie' nee Maclean, a cleaning woman, and Joseph Connery, a factory worker and truck driver. He has a younger brother, Neil. At 13, he left school and worked as a milkman in Edinburgh with St. Cuthbert's Co-operative Society. In 1947 he joined the Royal Navy, but after three years he was discharged on medical grounds because of severe stomach ulcers. First, he returned to the co-op, then worked as a lorry driver, an artist's model for the Edinburgh College of Art, and a coffin polisher. Looking to pick up some extra money, he helped out backstage at the King's Theatre around Christmas of 1951. He became interested in the proceedings, and got a job as a singing and dancing sailor in the chorus of South Pacific. More bit parts followed. He also took up bodybuilding as a hobby. His official website claims he was third in the 1950 Mr. Universe contest, other sources place him in the 1953 competition. He made his film debut as an extra in the musical Lilacs in the Spring (1955, Herbert Wilcox) with Anna Neagle and Errol Flynn. No Road Back (1957, Montgomery Tully) was Sean's first major film role, and it was followed by such films as Hell Drivers (1957, Cy Endfield) starring Stanley Baker, Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959, Robert Stevenson), and The Frightened City (1961, John Lemont) with Herbert Lom. Another early film part was in Another Time, Another Place (1958, Lewis Allen) as Lana Turner's romantic interest. During filming, Turner's possessive gangster boyfriend, Johnny Stompanato, believed she was having an affair with Connery. He stormed onto the set and pointed a gun at Connery, only to have Connery disarm Stompanato and knock him flat on his back. Shortly thereafter, Stompanato met his end at the hands of the teenage daughter of Lana Turner, Cheryl Crane. The film was released four months ahead of schedule to capitalize on the murder. Meanwhile Connery also appeared regularly on television. He played the leads in a ITV Teleplay of Anna Christie (1957) with his later wife Diane Cilento, and in a Canadian tv adaptation of Macbeth (1961, Paul Almond). He also had a prominent role in a BBC production of Anna Karenina (1961, Rudolph Cartier), in which he co-starred with Claire Bloom. Sean Connery's big breakthrough came in the role of the suave and sophisticared secret agent James Bond. He played the character in seven Bond films: Dr. No (1962, Terence Young), From Russia with Love (1963, Terence Young), Goldfinger (1964, Guy Hamilton), Thunderball (1965, Terence Young), You Only Live Twice (1967, Lewis Gilbert), Diamonds Are Forever (1971 Guy Hamilton), and Never Say Never Again (1983, Irvin Kershner). All seven films were big box-office hits, if not critically acclaimed as well. Among his many Bond girls were Ursula Andress, Daniela Bianchi, Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton, Claudine Auger, Karin Dor, Lana Wood, Jill St. John, Barbara Carrera and Kim Basinger. At first, James Bond's creator, Ian Fleming, doubted the casting, saying, "He's not what I envisioned of James Bond looks" and "I’m looking for Commander Bond and not an overgrown stunt-man," adding that the muscular Connery was unrefined. However, Fleming's girlfriend told him Connery had the requisite sexual charisma. Fleming changed his mind after the successful Dr. No premiere; he was so impressed, he created a half-Scottish, half-Swiss heritage for the literary James Bond in the later novels. Connery's portrayal of Bond owes much to stylistic tutelage from director Terence Young, polishing the actor while using his physical grace and presence for the action. While making the Bond films, Connery also starred in other acclaimed films such as The Longest Day (1962, Ken Annakin, Andrew Marton, Bernhard Wicki), the romantic melodrama Woman of Straw (1964, Basil Dearden) with Gina Lollobrigida, Marnie (1964, Alfred Hitchcock), the excellent war film The Hill (1965, Sidney Lumet), and the western Shalako (1968, Edward Dmytryk) with Brigitte Bardot. Two of his most moving films were The Offence (1972, Sidney Lumet) and in the wise and romantic version of the Robin Hood legend, Robin and Marian (1976, Richard Lester) with Audrey Hepburn. Apart from these films and The Man Who Would Be King (1975, John Huston) with Michael Caine, and The Wind and the Lion (1975, John Milius) most of Connery's successes in the seventies were as part of ensemble casts in films such as the Agatha Christie mystery Murder Guso Janitorial Services Serving the Janitorial Industrial since 2007. CLEAN BAKED ON GREASE - CLEAN BAKED

Cinnamon Streusel Coffee Cake One of the three cakes I made for Sunday's joint choir practice. I can only tell you that the aromas that permeated my home while this coffee cake baked was delightful. The fine sandy texture of the streusel sandwiching the layers of the tender cake was also highly prized by those who sampled it. (Thanks to JN who expressed her delight :) Recipe was inspired by a post from Nicole at "Baking Sheet." It is based on a Martha Stewart Living recipe that she tweeked. Cinnamon Streusel Coffee Cake For the Streusel: 2 ? cups ap flour 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp cardamom (or additional cinnamon) 1 cup brown sugar ? tsp salt 1 cup unsalted butter, softened For the Cake: 2 ? cups ap flour 1 tsp baking powder ? tsp baking soda 2 tsp cinnamon ? tsp salt ? cup unsalted butter, very soft 1 ? cups sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 ? cups plain yogurt or buttermilk (low fat or nonfat) Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease a 10-inch tube pan. Make the streusel: Place all your streusel ingredients, except for the butter, in a large bowl and stir together. Cut the butter into 10 or 12 large chunks and add them to the bowl. Using your hands, rub the butter into the flour mixture until the mixture is crumbly. Some pieces can be large - the size of an almond or pecan - but they shouldn't all be that big. It may take 4-5 minutes because it is a bit harder to work with soft butter than firm. Set aside. Make batter: Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl and whisk until well combined. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together on medium-high speed until smooth and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat eggs in one by one, followed by vanilla extract. Alternately add the yogurt (or buttermilk) and the flour mixture, making sure to end with an addition of dry ingredients. Don't forget to scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as you mix. Scrape half of your batter into the greased, 10-inch tube pan that you prepared earlier. Smooth batter with a spatula and top with 2 ? cups of streusel. Scrape remaining batter into pan, on top of streusel, gently spreading it to the sides of the pan with your spatula. Use your fingers to squeeze remaining streusel together into large and small chunks, then top batter with all remaining streusel. Bake at 350F for 60-70 minutes, until a tester comes out clean (mine took about 64 minutes). Place cake on a wire rack and allow to cool for 15 minutes. Run a sharp knife around the around the outer and inner edges of the pan. Remove tube portion with cake attached. Run knife over the bottom, loosening the cake. Gently replace cake in the pan, which will support it as you turn it upside down. Place a clean dishtowel on top of the pan and a baking sheet on top of that. Carefully flip pan over, turning cake out onto the baking sheet. Reinvert onto wire rack. Allow to cool completely. Serves up to 20. {2/52}- my sister's baking- •••Things I love number two••• One of my sisters' passions is baking and she's pretty good at it. Kate always tries out new stuff... different, but good most of the time :D. She made this pink grapefruit yogurt cake today, and I gotta say its much better then I thought it would be. In fact it was awesome! For those that wanted the recipe: Pink Grapefruit Yogurt Cake {makes one 10-inch cake, about 12 servings} 2 c flour 1 T baking powder 1/4 t salt 2 eggs 3/4 c granulated sugar 1 c plain whole milk yogurt 1/3 c vegetable oil Juice and zest of 1 pink grapefruit (about 1/2 c juice and 1 T zest) 1 t vanilla extract 3 T powdered sugar -Preheat the oven to 350 F. grease a 10-inch round springform pan (you can use a bundt type springform pan) and line with parchment paper. -In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. -On a clean surface, or in a large bowl, combine the granulated sugar and zest. with the back of a spoon or a flexible bench knife, rub the grapefruit zest into the sugar ( the essential oils will release into the sugar creating a beautifully fragrant sugar). -In a large bowl, beat the eggs and grapefruit sugar until the eggs are thick and pale yellow. add yogurt, oil, 1 T of grapefruit juice and vanilla extract, stir well to combine. add flour mixture and stir to combine. -Pour batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top with a rubber spatula. bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a wooden skewer comes out clean when inserted near the center. place the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes to cool. run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the cake release and remove the pan sides. cool completely on the wire rack. -In a small saucepan, combine the powdered sugar and the remaining grapefruit juice and bring to a boil. reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, stirring, for 10 minutes, or until the glaze is slightly thickened. remove from heat. -To finish the cake, place cake on a serving plate. pierce the cake all over the top with a skewer and pour the warm grapefruit glaze slowly over the cake and spread it with a spoon or pastry brush. source seventy nine This was another incident where my plan for water, and me being in it didn't really work out as I originally planned. I wanted to capture rain instead, unfortunately by the time I got set up the rains weren't heavy enough to capture, though I was satisfyingly damp. So I got my brother and the hose out, and we did this. Might I mention he had quite a blast hosing me down too. This is actually done for Food For Thought's workshop/photography competition that's helping to spread awareness for World Water Day. I really didn't want to turn to the hose for this because it would totally defeat the purpose. I have to say, I'm not exactly an activist, but I love seeing people get passionate about what they believe in. So I do what I can to help. 22nd March is World Water Day, that's something to remember. Cleaner Shrimp Cleaner shrimp is a term for any swimming decapod crustacean that cleans other organisms of parasites. This is a widely-cited example of symbiosis: a relationship in which both parties benefit. The fish benefit by having parasites removed from them, and the shrimp gain the nutritional value of the parasites. In many coral reefs, cleaner shrimp congregate at cleaning stations. (5) DSC 5738 sm this is kinda funny. so after all the hullabaloo of the wack and the airbags popping was over, i smelled burning and heard trickling noises i became convinced the car was about to burst into flames. i tried to get out through my door (forgetting about the big mercedes right there! oops!) and then i guess i rolled down the window to crawl out, when i realized i couldn't crawl out, i debated calling out to onlookers for help, but decided that was overly dramatic so for some reason, i rolled the window back up (to keep rain out of my totaled car? i dunno) then climbed across the passengers seat, and crawled out the passenger door, hands first - got to my feet and ran across the intersection (traffic had stopped) as i said, CONVINCED there was going to be a massive fireball behind me at any instant. a nice lady in scrubs was running towards me 'stop, you need to sit down, oh my god are you ok?' and i may have shouted IT'S GONNA BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW!!! that's how i tell it anyways, cos it's a lot funnier that way... anyhow, when i went to clean out the car, i saw the hairs - must've got em caught in the window and just tore em out in my frantic escape from the firey inferno that never happened. ahhh, adrenaline. 125/365 ~ The car has become a secular sanctuary for the individual, his shrine to the self, his mobile Walden Pond. ~ Edward McDonagh 125/365 ~ The car has become a secular sanctuary for the individual, his shrine to the self, his mobile Walden Pond. ~ Edward McDonagh How true is that? Lately I'm very much aware of how much time I spend in my car and how much my mobile sanctuary reflects my personality. It's usually messy yet I somehow know exactly where to find things in it and when it's cleaned up I feel renewed, even if it is short-lived. My Fusion is the first "real" car I've ever owned (or borrowed from the bank.) After one station wagon and four vans, buying it symbolized the end of the need for car seats and room for huge book bags and toting six kids around every other weekend. In that respect it was kind of a sad transition and yet, I know I wouldn't want to go back to those days no matter what. As I look at this car in front of me, I wonder "Could I pull off a car with polka dots?" Probably not. I think I'll just stick with my 'grown up' car. However don't be surprised to find me opening up the sunroof, rolling all the windows down and turning up the volume on some good ole' Bon Jovi every once in a while! Here is the view from Magic Island looking west across Ala Moana Beach Park. The surf was small that day, but this is a very popular surfing area especially during the summer swells. I spent many hours bodyboarding here in my youth. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day a few weeks ago, I walked around Aina Moana State Recreation Area, got some exercise, and shot a few pinhole exposures. To most locals, the park is known by it's popular name "Magic Island". Late last year, the Mayor of Honolulu proposed to rename this popular beach park after President Obama. The bill was killed last month. “Le Bambole" - Bamboo Pinhole Camera. Kodak 160 Portra NC. Exposure: f/256 and 3 seconds. (7) the advantages of a dirty car window on Belmont There should have been plenty of photos from my going to The Vic to see Hot Hot Heat on Thursday, October 4, 2007. I mean the lead singer, Steve Bays, basically poses for shots from people in the audience's front row. Though apparently those people are better at sneaking in cameras than I am. I got turned away at the door because "since [your camera] is too big to fit in a coat pocket, it must be professional." Oh well. At least I got this photo of Belmont Avenue on the way to taking a photo of the marquee after the show. I really like how dirty the inside of my car window has gotten for one reason. I just love this filter effect that it creates. Though I do need to clean it soon since people are starting to wonder why it's so dirty. 195/365 * 365 Days * Project 365 * Clean Vehicle It was such a nice evening I decided to wash my Trailblazer. Isn't the look of a clean vehicle just great. Give me the feeling of driving a clean car. The only down side is I cleaned the inside and outside windows but I still might be disappointed in the morning when driving into the sun. I used Armor All Wipes to clean the windows. Inside: Life Behind Bars in America American jails and prisons confine nearly 13.5 million people each year. Despite these disturbing numbers, little is known about life inside beyond the mythology of popular culture. Michael G. Santos, a federal prisoner nearing the end of his second decade of continuous confinement, documents the lives of the men warehoused in the American prison system. Inside: Life Behind Bars in America, his first book for the general public, takes us behind those bars and into the chaos of the cellblock. Capturing the voices of his fellow prisoners with perfect pitch, Santos makes the tragic--and at times inspiring--stories of men from the toughest gang leaders to the richest Wall Street criminals come alive. From drug schemes, murders for hire, and even a prostitution ring that trades on the flesh of female prison guards, this book contains the never-before-seen details of prison life that at last illuminate the varied ways in which men experience life behind bars in America. (14) hanging on I reported last friday about the Blue Tits Dick and Dixie who are raising their family in a bird house in our yard. Since the little ones were peeking out of the hole it looked like they were ready to leave home, eventhough they looked too small to my taste. Just in case one would fall out I'd mounted a bucket right under the bird house as a safety net. Yesterday morning while Paul and I were having coffee in the garden one of the babies jumped out, fluttered a little and landed in a bush. It couldn't fly yet and it was not big enough to withstand the dangers of the big world, so we decided to interfere and put it back, thinking it was a mistake of the wee one. All looked well, Dick and Dixie continued to feed their chicks and we went on with the day. This morning after a rough night with rain and thunder I went outside to check on the new family. I saw Dick and Dixie hovering around, but they weren't feeding their chicks anymore. It was awefully quiet in the nest too so after waiting for a couple of hours and watching the behaviour of the parents I decided to take a look inside the bird house. Would they all have left early in the morning? When I opened the bird house much to my horror I discovered that five of the chicks were dead, but one was still living and sat motionless on top his brothers and sisters. The nest was dirty and wet, flies everywhere and smelled aweful. At first I thought that the rain must have gotten in (eventhough the bird house is in a sheltered location) the dead chicks looked wet and may have died from the cold, but the bucket that was mounted right under the bird house was still dry and even more exposed. I don't know what happened, maybe the parents couldn't keep the nest clean with so many babies so they got sick and died? I lifted the little one out and put it in the bucket for a moment while I cleaned the bird house and lined it with fresh hay (and buried his/her siblings:-(, after putting the chick back in the nest I hung it on the wall again and waited for the parents to return. CHRIS DEFRIES TAKES ON THE CHALLENGE The 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center has four wards and each has a cat/dog door leading out to the Day Room. Day Rooms are enclosed areas about 60 feet long and 20 feet wide and 12 feet high to get sunshine and fresh air and play and have fun. When the wind blows hard the doors can stand straight open letting in the cold or hot air and sometimes even the rain or snow into the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center. The challenge has been out for over a year to build some kind of entry system that prevents the weather getting in BUT ... allows easy access for all animals, including the handicapped, three legged, blind, etc. ... allows easy access for medical personnel to remove the animal (feral cat) that is hiding to avoid treatment without injury (to the human or to the animal but that's never the case). ... to be sturdy so repairs aren't constantly needed and it doesn't blow over in the wind and ... ... to be easy to keep clean - yes naughty little kitties and blind poodles do things in places they shouldn't. Chris designed outdoor wind tunnels. That was the first question to answer. Inside or outside. Inside would be easier to build but everything else would be harder with inside tunnels. These tunnels have three baffles inside and strips of plastic hanging down on the final exit port as an additional wind break. They attach on hinges to the roof section over the doors and can be unlatched and swung down to extricate a medicine avoiding animal or for cleaning. It is an ingenious design. (16) Death of Ston part 1 Ston stands outside along the seawall, looking out at the ocean smoking some sort of chemically laced cigarette that if the wind was blowing the right way would fill the alleyway with a stench of burning tires mixed with sewage. He leans back against the wall, contemplating going back to the Hound’s Head for a beer with a bit of a quiet growl. Libby exits the building as deciding to take a break and just stretch body for an moment. Leaning back to the brick of wall, she closes her eyes as she thinks. Her nose then twitches when detects the aroma of smoke. Ston considers that this is turning into another rotten day when he sees a clean slight blonde walk out of the alleyway. She apparently has not noticed him yet, so taking a step forward he asks “You want a smoke? It’s good stuff.” His gaze looks the girl up and down rather obviously with a leer, his smile showing an abnormal amount of pleasure at her showing up. Libby Kayor eyes open startled when sees the big male suddenly appear. Her nose wrinkles up more as he just stinks. Shaking head to the offer of whatever he is smoking. Libby would silently curse herself for ditching Silas this morning." no... no thank you.." trying to appear calm and composed as to not agitate the man. Gaston Khandr (Ston) walks along the wall, circling around Libby, moving himself between her and the alleyway "So what's a pretty girl like you doing out here?" He licks the corner of his lips after his question, hands moving down to his belt line. Kevv Nitely screeches to a halt. He had been running about having fun and did not notice anyone around. He crouched down, waiting. He thinks 'oh lord, did he really just say that?' as his eyes narrow and he crouches down. His ears flick back, then forward, listening as he remains crouched down. Libby Kayor body moves circling as he moves till back hits up against the metal piping." I was just stretching my legs is all. Now if you would excuse me I need to get back to work.." carefully watching him as heart begins to pound faster in chest. Waiting as if expecting him to move out of her way. Ston squarely puts himself between Libby and the alleyway and smiles at her request. He shakes his head and says as he starts to take a step towards her “Now now, why would you want to leave? We were having such pleasant conversation.” He looks behind him, notices the alleyway door is closed and the street is rather far, thinking he’s safe … so does nothing but block the passage. He does impressive blocking stuff, otherwise known as standing there, as he assesses Libby. If he was not so concentrated on imagining the girls clothes coming off he might notice the hybrid crouched around the corner. Gaston Khandr stands there, contemplating the meaning of happiness and butterflies and their relationship to rainbows and how there must be a direct correlation between the satisfaction one gets from ones’ life and the amount of gummy bears consumed by the general population. He shakes his head a little, going back to leering at Libby thinking to himself the shit he’s smoking must be good stuff. Gaston Khandr still stands there. He probably would have jumped the girl by now if he was not so stoned, but as is time is meaningless and he just continues to undress the girl with his eyes, enjoying all sorts of fantasies in his head, some of which involve rubber ducks and jello. Gaston Khandr has been standing there for 30 minutes, or is it 3, either way Ston’s drugged out mind has been encouraging him to make a move so he pulls out a knife with a leer and licking his lips he says “Now, stay very quiet and I won’t cut you up too much.” My boy runs off to Chile for a week, leaving me and his dad and the cats to fend for ourselves on the home front. By day, I dust silhouettes on the walls, wash the wallpaper, reorganize, oh, everything. It's been some thirteen years since this place has been cleaned properly (that same math = the last time a woman claimed this address as residence, which: really, fellas?). But great is my reward. Every night his father takes me out to dinner. We have our rhythm down now: after the check comes, I find the ladies and pee while he smokes a cigarette outside. I do not smoke. I crave history. I meet his grandma. She teaches me what's in the garden. Once they rode trains across the country, the two of them. The furniture on the porch was there before he was born. When is the last time I read a novel in my nightgown, in bed? Last night. And tonight there will be more of the same. This world was made for reading, readers, remember? Remember how you used to do it, under the quilt with the flashlight, an ear always on the door? It was between that and crouching in the hallway outside my parents' bedroom, watching as they watched Moonlighting, or Thirtysomething, or Quantum Leap on the little black-and-white, ready to leap down the hall and flop under covers at the slightest sign of life from their bed. The key was staying up later than I was supposed to, regardless of the means. To be awake as long as possible. Remember how much you hated going to sleep then, sure you were missing the best of all possible worlds? The big time, the real time, that occurred, what: after ten? It could be Souderton outside, where I am right now. What it sounds like, I mean. Cicadas and whatnot. Baltimore's two hours south of where I grew up. Windows wide open. In a minute, I will steal down the stairs barefoot, take two Oreos from the cabinet, eat them both before I get back into bed. Day 122 - Josué, jumping Yesterday I got back from San Salvador, and as it is still the weekend, I took advantage of the opportunity to relax and clean up. I slept until nine, then after a quick breakfast got to work. I washed all the clothes from my trip, swept and mopped my floor, cleaned up some cobwebs, and washed my kitchen table and stove. Throughout the day, Josue, my landlady's little boy, followed me around. He would describe to me how to play his latest video game, tell me about his favorite cartoons, play eye-spy, or ask me how to say words such as butterfly, lunch, onion, and box in English. In this photo, he was jumping back and forth from a pile of empty plastic bottles he volunteered to crush for me, and the door to my room, so that he could see what I was doing and talk to me. THE CLEAN HOUSE SARAH RUHL - THE CLEAN HOUSE
The Clean House Sarah Ruhl - Car Cleaning Clip Art The Clean House Sarah Ruhl
In the Next Room (or the vibrator play) “A fascinating, funny and evocative play. . . . Ruhl develops the story with the enticing blend of irreverent humor and skewed realism. . . . It’s beautiful.” –San Francisco Chronicle “[This] breathtakingly inventive addition to Ruhl’s singular body of work . . . has the potential to be a modern masterpiece.”–Los Angeles Times Sarah Ruhl made her Broadway debut this fall with her latest effervescent comedy: a play about sex, intimacy, and equality, set in the 1880s, when enthusiasm for the electric light bulb gave rise to a handy new instrument to treat female hysteria. The story revolves around the medical office and home of Dr. Givings, who regularly induces “paroxysm” in his once high-strung patient Sabrina, allowing her to happily return to playing piano. Soon, Sabrina falls in love with the doctor’s assistant Annie, and also befriends his wife Catherine, who is dealing with her own neurotic misgivings about not being able to breast-feed her baby. With this new work, Ruhl once again uses playful symbolism and lyrical language as she makes seemingly effortless thematic leaps—crafting a play with tremendous critical and audience appeal, in her singular theatrical voice. Sarah Ruhl’s plays include Dead Man’s Cell Phone, The Clean House (a Pulitzer Prize finalist), Passion Play, and Eurydice, all of which have been widely produced throughout the United States and internationally. She is a recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship. (16) Matilde in "Clean House" a photo my friend Alex took of me in my latest production. "The Clean House" by Sarah Ruhl. Play by Sarah Ruhl the clean house sarah ruhl Named one of the "Ten Best Plays of 2008" by The New Yorker “Sarah Ruhl’s bold, inventive, and ironic triptych [is] a meditation on devotion and its appropriation by the state. . . . Ruhl is an original; a storyteller with a fine mind evolving her own theatrical idiom.”—John Lahr, The New Yorker “It’s a different kind of morality play . . . an often wondrous work . . . with [Ruhl’s] own special lyrical blend of poetry, humor and grace.”—Frank Rizzo, Variety Passion Play is Sarah Ruhl’s “biggest, most ambitious effort yet” (The New York Times), a three-and-a-half hour intimate epic, plunging the depths of the timely intersection of politics and religion. Ruhl dramatizes a community of players rehearsing their annual staging of the Easter Passion in three different eras: 1575 northern England, just before Queen Elizabeth outlaws the ritual; 1934 Oberammergua, Bavaria, as Hitler is rising to power; and Spearfish, South Dakota, from the time of Vietnam through Reagan’s presidency. In each period, the players grapple in different ways with the transformative nature of art, and politics are never far in the background, as Queen Elizabeth, Hitler, and Reagan each appear, played by a single commanding actor. Sarah Ruhl’s plays include Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Eurydice, and The Clean House, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Her work has been widely produced both throughout the country and internationally, and she is the recipient of the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship. SQUIRREL CLEANING TIPS : SQUIRREL CLEANING
SQUIRREL CLEANING TIPS : ROUND CLEANING BRUSHES : HOW TO CLEAN SLATE FLOORS Squirrel Cleaning Tips
Squirrels: The Animal Answer Guide Did you know that a groundhog is really a type of squirrel? That squirrels control their body temperature with their tails? That most squirrels have yellow-tinted eye lenses that work like sunglasses to reduce glare? That tree squirrels can turn their hind feet completely around when climbing down a tree head-first? In Squirrels: The Animal Answer Guide, Richard W. Thorington Jr. and Katie Ferrell unveil the fascinating world of one of the "most watched" mammals on the planet. The diversity of squirrels is astounding. There are 278 species that inhabit all continents except Antarctica and Australia—varying in size from the lumbering 18-pound gray marmot to the graceful pygmy flying squirrel that is smaller than most mice. In many parts of the world they readily share human habitats, joining us for lunch in a city park, raiding our bird feeders, and sneaking into college dorm rooms through open windows. Reviled as pests or loved as an endearing amusement, squirrels have played important roles in trade, literature, and mythology. Thorington and Ferrell cover every aspect of this diverse animal family, from the first squirrels of 36 million years ago to the present day. With over one hundred photographs and an intuitive question-and-answer format, this authoritative and engaging guide sheds light on a common mammal that is anything but commonplace. (2006) (10) Good Mail Day! Foods you like, despise, can't eat (allergies, etc.) Not allergic to anything food-related. The only foods I really despise are squashes, and I seriously doubt that you'll be sending me a zucchini or anything. Coffee vs. tea? Most definitely tea. All sorts. Current loves include: PG Tips, English Breakfast and Jasmine Green. Where do you live? (I'm thinking climate, big city/small town, etc.) I live in coastal Southern CA. It's beautiful here! I live in a suburb of LA, but let's be real. Anything surrounding LA is hardly a suburb. Long Beach is one of the biggest cities in CA. We live in a house that might as well be a townhouse, since I can damned near hear my neighbors pass gas. Favorite yarns / fabrics? While I don't have a yarn per se, I am really into yarns that are washable and not squeaky. I've been eyeing sock yarns to knit items other than socks. And as much as I want to sew, I just don't have the space or the time to do it. That being said, I REALLY want to sew myself a Kindle cover so anything cute and floral (Amy Butler-ish) would be nice. Crafty pursuits - knit, crochet, spin, sew, quilt, make friendship bracelets, any of these or others? I knit, I can sew and love cooking and baking (are those considered crafty?). Hobbies/pursuits/proclivities/passions (other than the aforementioned crafty ones, obvs) I love reading, cooking, and baking. I've been jogging lately and really enjoy it. Lately I've really been into learning about how to use more natural products in my everyday cleaning. I am extremely passionate about good food, especially for children. I make most of my daughter's foods and have since she started eating solids. My more shallow self is obsessing over nail polishes and nail art right now. Don't believe me, check out my PINTEREST boards. What do you do in life? (job, career, school, family, etc.) Currently, I am an unemployed teacher with no job experience. Wanna hire me? Lol. I am a SAHM, cooker, cleaner of all things, and general house manager. I am currently looking to do some teaching somewhere and am considering more education to make myself more marketable (high school chemistry anyone?). What makes you happy? Freshly baked bread, giggles from my sweet girl and handmade goodness all make me happy. Pretty nails, snuggly kitties and a hot cup of the perfect tea also make me a little giddy. Random favorites -- colors, flavors, scents, books, movies, TV, magazines, genres, time of day, motifs (foxes, bees, squirrels, owls, beavers, mushrooms, bats) etc. Colors: jewel-toned colors, especially teal Flavors/Scents: cinnamon, vanilla, chai, mostly anything sweet and food-like Books: Not really into romance or sci-fi, but most other genres I enjoy. And I definitely will partake in chick lit. Movies/TV: Right now I cannot seem to satiate my desire for British period TV and movies. Think Downton Abbey, Jane Austen-y stuff, The Tudors, etc. It's turning into a real problem around here. Yellow Mongoose The Yellow Mongoose (Cynictis penicillata), sometimes referred to as the Red Meerkat, is a small mammal averaging about 1 lb (1/2 kg) in weight and about 20 in (500 mm) in length. A member of the mongoose family, it lives in open country, from semi-desert scrubland to grasslands in Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. As many as twelve subspecies of yellow mongoose have been described. In general, the yellow mongoose has lighter highlights on the underbelly and chin, a bushy tail, and a complete lack of sexual dimorphism. Southern yellow mongooses are larger, have yellow or reddish fur, longer fur, and a longer tail with a characteristic white tip. Northern subspecies tend towards smaller size, grey colouration, a grey or darker grey tip to the tail, and shorter hair more appropriate to the hotter climate. The yellow mongoose is carnivorous, consuming mostly arthropods but also other small mammals, lizards, snakes and eggs of all kinds. The yellow mongoose is primarily diurnal, though nocturnal activity has been observed. Living in colonies of up to 20 individuals in a permanent underground burrow complex, the yellow mongoose will often co-exist with Cape Ground Squirrels or suricates and share maintenance of the warren, adding new tunnels and burrows as necessary. The tunnel system has many entrances, nearby which the yellow mongoose makes its latrines. The social structure of the yellow mongoose is hierarchical, based around a central breeding pair and their most recent offspring. There are also subadults, the elderly, or adult relatives of the central pair. Male ranges tend to overlap, while females from other dens have contiguous non-overlapping ranges. Every day, the alpha male will mark members of his group with anal gland secretions, and his boundaries with facial and anal secretions, as well as urine. The alpha male also rubs his back against raised objects, leaving behind hair as a visual marker of territory. Other members of the group mark their dens with cheek secretions. Predators of the yellow mongoose are birds of prey, snakes and jackals. When frightened, the yellow mongoose will growl and secrete from its anal glands. It can also scream, bark, and purr, though these are exceptions, as the yellow mongoose is usually silent, and communicates mood and status through tail movements. The mating season of the yellow mongoose is between July and September, and it gives birth underground between October and December, with no bedding material, in a clean chamber of the burrow system. Usually, two offspring are produced per pregnancy, and they are weaned at 10 weeks, reaching adult size after 10 months squirrel cleaning tips Educational Insights The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel GameThe Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game!Your forest friends are hungry and they need your help! KitchenAid Silicone Bakeware 9-Inch Round Cake Pan, Red Get your cakes in shape with this round silicone cake pan from KitchenAid. It is made of FDA-approved silicone, which is flexible, Heat resistant to 500° and safe to use in the oven, freezer, microwave and dishwasher. It also has a quick-release permanent nonstick surface that heats and cools quickly and evenly. Imported. 2Hx9” dia. Silicone bakeware is hard to believe; for many, it takes an act of faith to use it for the first time. But after that, it's hard to remember using anything else. The red KitchenAid 9-inch round cake pan is a basic pan for baking simple round layers, and even though it's made of floppy silicone rubber, it does as good a job (or better) than any metal or glass pan. For one thing, it's easier to release a cake from a silicone pan once it's done baking; just invert the pan, exert a slight pressure to the bottom, and peel the cake away from the pan. And since it's made of resilient silicone, this pan can handle the use of metal spatulas or utensils without its permanent nonstick quality being affected; don't use anything with a serrated edge, though. Baking times from recipes may need to be adjusted slightly for use with silicone pans, since they heat up so much more quickly than conventional pans. It is safe to move silicone baking pans directly from the freezer to a microwave or preheated oven; there's no need to worry about gradual temperature increases since it won't buckle like metal or shatter like glass. The pan can be placed on a baking sheet or directly on the oven rack while baking. Do not use it on a gas or electric burner or under a broiler. KitchenAid silicone baking pans are dishwasher-safe; if washing by hand, do not use abrasive cleansers or scouring pads. Season with salt & pepper to your taste. Cook 5 minutes longer. - Remove from heat. Stir in parsley and cool to room tempurature. - Preheat oven to 350?. - If you haven't worked with phyllo before, look up some tips. I typically keep it covered on both sides by wax paper and keep it covered with a damp dish towel. - Melt / clarify that butter. - Lay a sheet of phyllo on a clean surface and brush lightly with the butter. Cover with a second sheet of phyllo and brush again with butter. - Cut across the short length into strips about 3 inches in width. Place about 1-2 teaspoons of the cooled filling on the end of each strip and fold into triangles like a paper football. - Brush both sides of triangle with butter and place on a baking sheet. Repeat last couple of steps until finished. - Bake until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Serve hot. NOTE: Leftovers should be warmed in the oven or toaster oven to keep their delightful flakiness. Microwaves will turn them into a soggy, droopy (but still tasty) mess.
