House of P.Y. Chong 1940s

Tongue-in-cheek but not politically correct by today's standards. Ad card for a popular Chinese restaurant on Ala Moana Blvd. "Big Bosse" P.Y. Chong started Waikiki Lau Yee Chai on Kuhio Avenue around 1929 and the House of P.Y. Chong on Ala Moana "Load" around 1940. The address shows it would have been located between the Ilikai and Hawaii Prince hotels today. From what I can find on the internet, P.Y. was a true "fliend" to the servicemen of the era.

Oaklands Hotel

Oaklands Hotel

The Oaklands Hotel at Oaklands, NSW.

I needed petrol when I got to Oaklands. The only bowsers in the town were real museum pieces, at a business across the road from the pub. They were built into the footpath and had the old mechanical numbers, none of that new fangled digital stuff.

The owner, who was a terrific old bloke, did the driveway service bit - he had to, there was a padlock on the bowser and he had the key. Only one of the two bowsers was open. The old bloke had closed the other one, he'd worked out it was delivering 5 litres of petrol but only clocking up 4.2 litres on the dial.

The old bloke said he only keeps the last bowser open to help out the older locals and travellers like me. The only other petrol available within about 50km was out the back of a trucking business. It worked on an honour system. You filled your tank, wrote the meter reading in the book and paid for what you used. They'd had a bit of trouble with a truckie who helped himself to 800 litres. They caught him on the security camera.

One of the most entertaining petrol stops I've had.

Gungellan Hotel

Gungellan Hotel

The TV series McLeod's Daughters was filmed in the town of Freeling in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. I've never watched an episode of that show, so I knew nothing of this before I visited Freeling.

Freeling wasn't called Freeling in the show, it was called Gungellan instead. They seem keen to cash in on the name Gungellan. This pub used to be called the Railway Hotel but has now changed its name to Gungellan Hotel.

Page 340 of the book "Offbeat Australia" by David Astle. Note that he mistakenly calls the town Greening in the book.

Newark Castle, Port Glasgow

Sir Partick and Lady Margaret.
George Maxwell's descendants were a powerful and influential family in Renfrewshire. The most notable, and notorious, member of the family was Sir Patrick, who became laird in the 1580s. Like others of his time, he was a cultured and enlightened rascal. On one hand he was a pillar of society, a justice of the peace, a friend of James VI, and the builder of a very fine house; on the other he was a murderer and a wife-beater who contrived through his high connections to avoid getting the punishment which by all accounts he thoroughly deserved.

But his most sorry victim was undoubtedly his own wife, Lady Margaret Crawford. Patrick's tendency to violence in the family is on record as early as 1595 when his own mother, Marion, complained to the Privy Council about his conduct. It went unheeded. Only in later years did it become apparent that Lady Margaret's life with Patrick must have been wretched. In the end, after 44 years of marriage and having presented her husband with 16 children, she deserted him and retired to Dumbarton, across the Clyde, where she lived in great poverty.

Lady Margaret had tried to have her "unkind and unnatural husband" restrained earlier. Sir Patrick's response had been to continue to mistreat her. In 1632, the family was apparently dining in the hall with the minister and other guests when Lady Margaret was struck so badly about the face that she was confined to her bed for six months. No sooner had she recovered than Sir Patrick attacked her again, this time with a sword. He then had her confined once more to her bedchamber where she was allowed only a little drink and half an oat-loaf each day. Her son, Alexander, and his wife, Ann Houston, attempted to look after her but they were thrown out of the house. Shortly after this Lady Margaret made her escape. Sir Patrick, having contrived for some time to avoid being brought to trial, was by now evidently too ill to travel to Edinburgh to answer his wife's charges and must have died soon afterwards.
This sad tale of a family in turmoil unfolded in the elegant surroundings created by Patrick Maxwell himself in the 1590s. The date 1597 is inscribed over his new front door. Patrick Maxwell downgraded the former family accommodation in the old tower house and had a splendid new range built between it and the gatehouse to serve as the focus of his new residence. At the same time new formal gardens and orchards were created around the house to enhance its setting.

Radisson Martinique on Broadway

Radisson Martinique on Broadway

Radisson Martinique on Broadway (formerly Holiday Inn Martinique)
49 West 32nd Street
New York, NY 10001

On May 5, 1998, the Hotel Martinique was granted landmark status by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The commission must have been influenced by the Radisson signage!
--------------
Developer William R. H. Martin built The Hotel Martinique which was designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh. It was built with French chateau elements in phases from 1897-1911. The architect Hardenbergh also designed the original Waldorf Hotel and Astoria Hotels, as well as the Plaza in NYC and the Willard (1906) in Washington, DC, and the Copley Plaza (1912), in Boston, MA. He was best known as the architect for The Dakota on Central Park West.

The Martinique was named after its original owner William R. H. Martin. At his death in 1912, Martin's property holdings were estimated to be worth more than $10,000,000, and included the Martinique Hotel and the Marbridge Building.

According to emporis.com the sixteen-story French Renaissance styled building capitalized on the openness made possible by Greeley Square, to show off the building's mansard roof, with its towers, and ornate dormers. Despite having been built in three sections, the hotel maintains a harmonious street presence on all three facades.

Department store owner Rodman Wanamaker invited some 35 prominent golfers, including Walter Hagen, the 1913 U.S. Open champion Francis Quimet and golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast, to a luncheon at the Taplow Club in the Hotel Martinique in New York City on Jan. 17, 1916. This exploratory meeting resulted in the formation of The PGA of America.

In the 50's, it was one of the few in the city to still offer rooms without baths.

No hotel epitomized New York's bad old days like the Martinique, on 32nd and Broadway.

The Martinique Hotel, owned by Martinique Hotel Affiliates Inc., was used as a welfare hotel from 1973 to 1988. The writer Jonathan Kozol reported that in the late 1980's Salvatore Tuccelli, a part owner of the Martinque Hotel, managed the hotel with the assistance of a gun in his belt.

New York City, using its own funds, plus state and Federal aid, spent about $1,500 a month to keep 400+ homeless families in the Martinique.

In 1988 Mayor of NYC, Ed Koch pledged to empty the Martinique and 46 other hotels it used to house the homeless by July 1990. The Martinique Hotel was chosen to be first, because it was one of the biggest hotels, and a target of complaints in the neighborhood and because it had become a symbol of the horrors of a system that paid exorbitant sums to warehouse families in shabby, crowded hotels. In 1988 the city was paying $1,800 to rent one room for a family of four per month.

On May 5, 1998, the Hotel Martinique was granted landmark status by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The Martinique on Broadway, underwent a major renovation program in 1996-1998 converting it from a 650- SRO Hotel into a 18-story 532-room first class, full service hotel, with 20,000 square feet of meeting and ballroom space and 15,000 sq. ft. of retail space at ground level. The property is currently being operated as a Radisson Hotel, and managed by Thurcon Properties Ltd.

Information obtained from Credit Suisse First Boston Prospectus dated October 12, 1999:

On October 27, 1998 Herald Hotel Associates, L.P. obtained a $36 million loan at 8.5% interest from Credit Suisse First Boston. Harold Thurman, a New York area real estate developer is the principal of the limited partnership. The load is secured by a first priority lien on the Holiday Inn Broadway, 18-story 531 room hotel at 1260 Broadway, New York, New York which is managed by Thurcon Properties, Ltd. Thurcon's management fee is 5% of gross revenues, subordinated to the CSFB loan. The Holiday Inn franchise agreement is effective June 26, 1996 for a term of 20 years. The Holiday Inn franchise fees include a royalty of 5% of gross revenues, a marketing contribution of 1.5% of gross revenues, a reservation contribution of 1% of gross revenues, and a monthly reservation fee of $6.43 per room.

A 2006 press release issued by Carlson Hotels reported:

"The New York Martinique Hotel located on 32nd Street and Broadway will be reflagged by manager/owner by Harold Thurman (aka Herald Hotel Associates, L.P )as the New York Martinique Radisson Hotel July 1,2006 after undergoing extensive renovation which will cost upwards of $10 million.

Renovation of the 330,000 s/f hotel includes the addition of flat screen televisions, new furnishings to guest rooms, the extensive remodeling of the lobby, and the construction of a French Brasserrie, a gym and a private club called the Martinique club, exclusively for executives. Some of the renovation was completed in June 2006. Anticipated completion date for the rest of the hotel is January 2007.

The reflagging means that the hotel will take on the new name and have access to

London Lost Music Venues: Folk Music 05 - Pindar of Wakefield

London Lost Music Venues: Folk Music 05 - Pindar of Wakefield

Address: 328 Grays Inn Road, London WC1.
Dates: 1960s.
Past Use: Pub (built 1878, previous pub in site since 16th century).
Current Use: Water Rats Theatre/Pub (purchased by the Grand Order of Water Rats in 1986 and renamed afterwards. Music has been a feature of the Water Rats, programmed previously by Plum, and currently by Mondo).

Ewan MacColl fell out with Malcolm Nixon and withdrew from the Ballads and Blues Club (probably around 1959). In June 1961 he launched his own club which came to be called the Singers Club and was run by Bruce Dunnet. The club’s first venue was the ACTT building in Soho Square. The residents included Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, Dominic Behan and A.L Lloyd. Other venues which followed included the Plough in Museum Street, Prince of Wales Feathers in Warren Street, Royal Hotel in Woburn Place, the New Merlin’s Cave in Margery Street, the John Snow in Broadwick Street, the Union Tavern in Lloyd Baker Street, the Bull & Mouth in Holborn, the Princess Louise (see another photo in this set), Cora Hotel in Bloomsbury, and a Boys’ Club in Lamb’s Conduit Street. Colin Harper in his book Dazzling Stranger refers to the spell at the Pindar of Wakefield (October 1962 to September 1963) as “a particularly celebrated era“ (I’m not sure if he is referring to anything more than the Bob Dylan visit on the 22nd December 1962). Apparently every time the club moved MacColl added a new verse to a “Song of the Travels” (the information on moves is taken from the Haper book and the mudcat discussion).

The Singers Club has attracted a lot of criticism, mostly due of its music policy of wanting singers to do songs from their own country (there has been some dispute about the exact nature of the requirement). Nevertheless, I am sure that a visit to the club in its sixties heyday would have been an extremely interesting experience.

Apparently V.I. Lenin used to drink in the Pindar of Wakefielld during the time he spent in London (various dates between 1902 and 1911).

I have listened to music at this venue twice in its later Water Rats guise - the Larry Love Showband in 2004 and Laura Cantrell in 2011. The music room is now on the ground floor through the bar. The room is pretty basic (“grimy” is the most frequently used phrase in internet reviews).

Miami Herald 2/20/10

Miami Herald 2/20/10

By MICHAEL VASQUEZ
mrvasquez@MiamiHerald.com

If the in-line rollerskate, or rollerblade, is an endangered species, then South Beach might well be called one of its few remaining natural habitats.

As rollerblading has gone from '90s trendy to 2000s castoff -- with only half as many Americans blading today as there were a decade ago -- South Beach has remained an in-line hotspot. Beach residents commute to work by blade, skate to errands on West Avenue, and once a year, that grand behemoth of international roller-gatherings, known as the Great EsSkate, comes gliding into town for a three-day run.

Concluding Sunday, the Great EsSkate -- now in its 10th year -- draws hundreds of roller-enthusiasts from around the globe for events that range from police-escorted city skating to nightclub outings to skater-specific morning yoga sessions.

``We've got a group of 15 coming from Germany,'' said Great EsSkate Director Gene Cook. ``There's an electricity that goes along with having so many skaters. We're the largest social skate in North America.''

It's an electricity that rollerblading, for the most part, has lacked of late. As sales tanked, the past decade was cruel to blading in other ways: In 2005, in-line skating was unceremoniously dropped from ESPN's extreme X-games, and the pseudo-sport has repeatedly failed in its attempts at being included in the Summer Olympic Games (losing out to both rugby and golf).

At Oakland Park-based Peter Glenn Ski and Sports, blading has gone from being a small but important piece of the business to an infinitesimal speck -- now representing only about one percent of overall sales. One Peter Glenn salesman said he now sells the same amount of rollerblades in a week that he used to move in a single day.

Peter Glenn used to help sponsor the annual Great EsSkate but several years ago dropped out because ``it just didn't seem to work out for us as much,'' said company marketing director David Mahoney.

But while skating overall has suffered, Mahoney said South Beach still stands out as a blading destination -- even more so than other skate-friendly locales such as Fort Lauderdale Beach.

``Fort Lauderdale Beach isn't really a living area like South Beach is,'' Mahoney said. In South Beach, he said, ``a lot of people just use it as a way to get around.''

Sady Melendez of Miami Beach has commuted to work by blade -- both in the 1990s and more recently.

``When I was a teenager, I used to give out fliers for clubs down here, so I would rollerblade,'' said Melendez, one of those participating in this year's Great EsSkate.

Now 28 years old and a manager at a South Beach Italian restaurant, Melendez still occasionally straps on her skates as a way to get to the office. She's one of a substantial number of Beach residents who simply don't drive.

Mid-Beach resident Steve Dudley is an airline pilot, so skating to work isn't really practical for him. But Dudley sometimes runs errands on his blades, including whizzing up and down the aisles at Whole Foods, with shopping basket in hand.

``I never fell down, I've been doing it long enough,'' said Dudley, 50, a blader for the past 15 years. Sadly, Whole Foods banned skating this past year, he said, so groceries are now strictly an on-foot experience.

``Publix? I don't think they ever wanted you in there,'' he said.

While South Beach stands out from most American cities in its love of blades, it's not the only blade-happy town. California's Venice Beach is another place where in-line still reigns supreme.

Hop over to Europe or Asia, and the explosion of bladers might make you wonder if the 1990s ever ended.

``In Paris they have the Friday night roller, which sometimes has attracted 10,000 skaters,'' said Robert Burnson, publisher of Inline Planet, which bills itself as the world's largest in-line skating website.

Part of the reason why blading has struggled in the United States, Burnson said, is it's not taken very seriously.

``It's got a reputation as being just something that girls do, I hate to say it, on South Beach, in their little skate skirts,'' Burnson said.

Even during in-line's heyday, it was mocked by skateboarders who considered their own four-wheeled passion to be more hard-core and rebellious.

Nowadays, older, traditional rollerskates -- or ``quad'' skates -- are enjoying nostalgic appeal, thanks in part to last year's Drew Barrymore-directed roller-derby movie Whip It.

Rollerblades, though, are only a decade or so removed from their peak, making them old enough to be frowned upon, but not yet old enough for retro cool.

At least bladers can count on city government support in Miami Beach. The mayor and police chief are frequent guests at the Great EsSkate's opening ceremony.

Miami Beach police in particular have a tight relationship with the event -- it's raised close to $100,000 for police charities over the years.

Miami Beach Sgt. Tony Lamacchio is a blader himself, one who has patrolled Lincoln Road by skate. L
