Keep Tahoe Blue: Lake Tahoe, California
I don't think I'll ever get over being utterly amazed at the marvel of human flight. Every time I fly, I am stunned that people don't fight over the window seats anymore. I love peering out airplane windows and seeing the clouds from above, and trying to identify landmarks below.
I shot this image of the southern half of Lake Tahoe out of the airplane window on my return flight from Colorado. I tried a polarizer, but it created crazy rainbows through the multi-plexi-window, so that meant one thing... a Holga-like effect was going to ensue. I'm a huge fan of crazy, dirty, funky plastic camera type images. I added a little funk to the image in post-processing, including the vignetting and blown areas, and I kept Tahoe blue.

Mountain Ash Sorbus (Pyrus) americana on Mount Royal
This stunning Mountain Ash Sorbus (Pyrus) americana is on the corner of Dorchester Avenue and Carleton Street on Mount Royal Hill, one of the older neighbourhoods in Calgary with a unique history.
"In 1907, the CPR registered the area from Royal Avenue, and its western extension, Colborne Crescent, south to Dorchester Avenue, and from the eastern escarpment to 14th street on the west. [. . .] It was officially named Mount Royal, after the Montreal district where the CPR president, William Van Horne, lived. [. . .] Designed as an elite residential area, the lots were large, ranging in width from 50’ to 175’. Many of them were through lots extending the full depth of the block, anticipating the construction of large homes complete with both formal front entrances and rear service access. Lots on Sydenham Road extended right through to Prospect Avenue, as did those between Hope and 7th Streets, and Royal and Durham Avenues. The curvilinear roads followed the contours of the land, although the blocks between Prospect and Dorchester Avenues showed some relationship to a grid conformation, albeit with much more spacious lot sizes. The most desirable lots were on a slope and afforded the best views: northward they has a panoramic view of the city and the Bow River valley; and south and westward a view to the foothills and the Rocky Mountains. They were, of course, also on a distinct rise of land, above the dust and smoke of the city, an aspect that applies to many elite districts, Mount Royal in Montreal, for instances, and Shaughnessy in Vancouver(Courbet and Simpson 1994:17). By 1923 there were still 416 unsold lots in South Mount Royal, with an estimated value of close to $200,000.00, and the CPR still retained some at the end of World War II. All this vacant land led a group of enthusiasts to develop a golf course in 1919 on the land on the brow of the escarpment between 7th and 8th Streets. The course circled the school and hence called itself the Earl Grey Golf Club. [. . .] In the 1940s the pace of development picked up and by the 1950s and 1960s there were ever fewer vacant lots (Courbet and Simpson 1994:23). During its maturing process in the years between the wars, the community developed as an insular district sufficient unto itself. Vacant lots created an even more spacious and open feeling and many of the young people living in the area had their own horses, tethered for the most part on their own lots. There was no development to the south and they had the wide open prairie over which to ride (Courbet and Simpson 1994:23). "
The first house built on Mount Royal Hill was actually a sanatorium built by the enterprising Dr. Ernest Wills, an English doctor with a lot of experience in the treatment of tuberculosis who arrived in Calgary in 1903 (Courbet and Simpson 1994:13). It was built on the lot where this tree now grows, at the apex of Mount Royal Hill and the centre of Mount Royal. Because of its altitude and dry climate, Calgary had long been considered a good place for the treatment of tuberculosis. Dr. Wills could see the benefit of the hilltop location where there would be an ample supply of fresh air and open space for his patients. He owned a ten acre lot purchased from the Canadian Pacific Railway, S.W.1/4, Legal Subdivision 11, which included the square block now enclosed by Dorchester Avenue, Tenth Street West, Prospect Avenue and Carleton Street (Courbet and Simpson 1994:13). The building was, apparently, quite substantial. It had a drawing room, dining room, recreation and music room, as well as sleeping areas, and also accommodation for Dr. Wills and his family [. . .] Following the untimely death of Dr. Wells, the rectangular area was subdivided in a standard grid pattern. This anomaly is visible today with its straight streets and uniform sized lots. While the sanatorium building remained on site for some thirty years, it was eventually demolished and there are no visible signs of its existence (Courbet and Simpson 1994:29). [. . .] Wills' widow sold sold the ten acres in 1908 to "Richard L. Morrison, a physician who had taken over management of the sanatorium. Morrison had the area subdivided in February 1909 (see Map 3, Plan 304V) and the street that runs north and south down the middle of the area, now Morrison Street, was presumably named after him. The restrictive caveat placed on most houses in Mount Royal by the CPR was not on the title of houses in Plan 304 V (Courbet and Simpson 1994:14)."
This tree grows where Dorchester meets Carleton, both named by error after the same man. Sir Guy Carleton later received the title of Baron Dorchester according to a letter to the Editor from Donald B. Smith, Calgary Herald. September 30, 1990. See (Courbet and Simpson 1994).
";[T]he initial settlement in what is now Mount Royal took place around the lower slopes of Hope Street, then often known as 6th street, and along Royal Avenue, known as 20th avenue. And mos

Pillows?! Pillows are for GIRLS! I'll take Tabby Boy's bag. I mean.... later.
Orange&White Boy has arrived safely at Andreea's Five Star Feral Hotel :-D Wish us a nice stay and a quiet night :-)
ON THE OTHER HAND, I wasn't able to trap either Don Juan or Tabby Girl today, and I'm getting nervous... Tabby Girl would have been really easy to trap, but she didn't show up... And Don Juan was there, but first he got scared at the sight of the carrier, and then, when I finally grabbed him, he managed to scratch me and ran away. And then, from a safe distance, he gave me a look I'll never forget :-D. I MUST get both of them in the next 48 hours, otherwise things will get very complicated for me...

Sitges
Sitges (Catalan pronunciation: [?sid??s]), Catalonia, Spain is a small city about 35 kilometres southwest of Barcelona renowned worldwide for its Film Festival and Carnival. Between the hills and the sea, it is known for its much-frequented beaches, nightspots, and historical sites.
While the roots of Sitges' artsy reputation date back to the late 19th century, when Catalan painter Santiago Rusinol took up residence there during the summer, the town really came into its own during the 1960s, when it was the only centre for the counterculture on the mainland of Spain (then still under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco), and became known as a sort of "Ibiza in miniature".
Today, Sitges can be considered a dynamic cultural oasis, basing its economy on tourism and culture offering more than 4,500 hotel beds, half of them in four-star hotels. The firm commitment for quality infrastructures has converted Sitges into a first-class destination in terms of tourism of congresses, conferences, seminars and company meetings in the Mediterranean area.
Sitges is especially popular as a gay tourist destination - especially in July and August when gay men and lesbians visit Sitges as "one of the most popular gay holiday spots in Europe". The city is very international. Almost 35% of the approximately 26,000 permanent inhabitants are from the Netherlands, Great Britain, France and Scandinavia, whose children attend international schools in the area. There are 17 beaches including punta de la torrenta

Sir George Gilbert Scott R.A.
From the Illustrated London News of 13 April, 1878 (signed T.S.) The engraving was based on a photograph by the London Stereoscopic Company. [scanned]
The death of Sir George Gilbert Scott, R.A., one of the most eminent of British architects, was mentioned last week. He was the son of a country clergyman, the Rev. Thomas Scott,, of Gawcott, Buckinghamshire, author of a Commentary on the Bible. George Gilbert Scott was born in 1811. He early showed a taste for church architecture, and was brought up to that profession.
In 1841, during a brief partnership with Mr. Moffat, Mr. Scott designed the Martyr's Memorial at Oxford, and soon afterwards the new church at Camberwell. In 1842 the church of St. Nicholas at Hamburg was destroyed by fire; the architects of Europe were invited to compete for the privilege of rebuilding the edifice, and Mr. Scott's design was accepted. This work has not long been completed, the spire being 478 ft. high, the highest in the world until those of Cologne Cathedral are completed. The honour thus won gave Mr. Scott a wide reputation. In 1848 he was requested to furnish a design for the Cathedral Church at St. John's. Newfoundland; he did so, but the building is still unfinished. In 1855, he was selected to erect the proposed Hotel de Ville and Senate House at Hamburg. He afterwards superintended the restoration of the parish church of Doncaster.
Meanwhile he had been appointed official architect to the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, and had written his "Plea for the Faithful Restoration of our Ancient Churches." It would take some time to enumerate the works he has accomplised in that department. He restored the cathedrals of Ely, Lichfield, Hereford, Ripon, Gloucester, Chester, St. David's, St. Asaph, Bangor, Salisbury, Exeter, Peterborough, Worcester, Rochester, and Oxford. He rearranged the choir, including new screen and pavement and pulpit, at Durham Cathedral, and was engaged with Mr. Slater in the reconstruction of the central tower and spire at Chichester. He designed the new Abbey Gatehouse and the buildings on the north side of Westminster Abbey, besides many desirable improvements in the venerable edifice itself, and in the Chapter-house.
In addition to restoring old churches and erecting new ones in all parts of the country, he carried out many secular works, such as Kelham Hall in Nottinghamshire, Lee Priory in Kent, the Townhall at Preston, Walton House in Warwickshire, the Infirmary at Leeds, Hadofunos House in North Wales, the Midland Railway terminus at St. Pancras, and the National Memorial to Prince Albert. He was the architect of the new Foreign Office and the new Home and Colonial Offices, and, in conjunction with Sir Digby Wyatt, designed the new India Office. He also restored Exeter, Merton, and New College, at Oxford, made many alterations in St. John's College at Cambridge, and entirely rebuilt the University buildings at Glasgow.
Though his time was more than sufficiently occupied, he occasionally found leisure to write upon the art to which his life was devoted. In 1850 he published some "Remarks on Secular and Domestic Architecture," in 1862 his "Gleanings from Westminster Abbey," and in 1861 his "Conservation of Ancient Architectural Monuments." The Architectural Museum, too, owes much of its prosperity to the interest he took in it. He was elected R.A. in 1860.
It was at the wish of the Queen that he got the appointment of architect to the National Memorial to the Prince Consort; and he received the honour of knighthood. Towards the close of his life he was engaged in erecting the new Cathedral at Edinburgh; in re-roofing and re-arranging the Chapel of New College, Oxford; and in carrying out the restoration of the Cathedral at St. Albans.
obdachlos hotel
some days ago i went to visit arkadiusz and andrzej who are living on an empty ground in hamburg st.pauli.
"this is a 7 star hotel and a night here costs 2000 dollars!" every piece of art costs thousands of dollars and even a glas of water costs 20 euros at the obdachlos hotel (homeless hotel)
arkadiusz told me he has booked a trip with the queen mary to go to the cayman islands. and after that he is going to hollywood to work as an actor. and believe me, he's got the skillz.
waiting for his trip, he is living in this wonderful little world. he has all what he needs. he works collecting bottles on the reeperbahn area on week ends. some people bring him some things to eat and drink. and some clothes.
arkadiusz loves hamburg. he loves the people, the city, and even the policemen who are not as agressive as back in poland. "hambug has been good to me".

The Emperor Akbar
The emperor Akbar died in 1605 and was succeeded by prince Salim, who took the regal name Jahangir. After her husband Sher Afghan (who was appointed as jagirdar of Bardhaman, a city in Bengal) was killed in 1607, Mehr-un-Nisaa became a lady-in-waiting to one of the Jahangir's stepmothers, Ruqayya Sultana Begum. Ruqayya was the most senior woman in the harem and had been Akbar's first and principal wife and was also the daughter of Mirza Hindal. The father of Mehr-un-Nisaa was, at that time, a diwan to an amir-ul-umra, decidedly not a very high post.
The year 1607 had not been particularly good for Mehr-un-Nisaa. Her family had fallen into disgrace. Her father, who had been holding important posts under Akbar and Jahangir, had succumbed to his only weakness, money, and had been charged with embezzlement. Moreover, due to possible involvement in the pro-Khusrau assassination attempt on Jahangir in 1607, two of Mehr-un-Nisaa's family members (one brother named Muhammad Sharif and her mother's cousin) were executed on the orders of the Emperor.
In march 1611, her fortune took a turn for the better. She met the emperor Jehangir at the palace meena bazaar during the spring festival Nowruz new year. Jahangir grew so infatuated by her beauty that he proposed immediately and they were married on May 25 of the same year becoming his twentieth wife.
Mehr-un-Nisaa received the name Nur Mahal (Light of the Palace), upon her marriage in 1611 and was conferred the title Nur Jahan (Light of the world) in 1616. Jahangir's actual name was Nur-ud-din Muhammad, and thus the name that he gave to his wife was his own first name combined with the first part of his regal name.
Mughal empress: For Mehr-un-Nisaa's own immediate family, marriage to Jahangir became a great boon with several members receiving sizeable endowments and promotions as a result. This affection led to Nur Jahan wielding a great deal of actual power in affairs of state. The Mughal state gave absolute power to the emperor, and those who exercised influence over the emperor gained immense influence and prestige. Jahangir's addiction to opium and alcohol made it easier for Nur Jahan to exert her influence. For many years, she effectively wielded imperial power and was recognized as the real force behind the Mughal throne. She even gave audiences at her palace and the ministers consulted with her on most matters. Indeed, Jahangir even permitted coinage to be struck in her name, something that traditionally defined sovereignty.
Through Nur Jahan's influence, her family, including her brother Asaf Khan, consolidated their position at court. Asaf Khan was appointed grand Wazir (minister) to Jahangir, and his daughter Arjumand Banu Begum (later known as Mumtaz Mahal) was wed to Prince Khurram (the future Shah Jahan), the third son of Jahangir, born by a Rajput princess, Jagat Gosaini. Jahangir's eldest son Khusrau had rebelled against the Emperor and was blinded as a result. The second son, Parviz, was weak and addicted to alcohol. The fourth son was Prince Shahryar, born by a royal concubine. Khurram rebelled against his father and a war of succession broke out. Due to Khurram's intransigence, Nur Jahan shifted her support to his younger brother, Shahryar. She arranged the marriage of her own daughter Ladli Begum, born of her first marriage, to her stepson Shahryar [1]. The two weddings ensured that one way or another, the influence of Nur Jahan's family would extend over the Mughal Empire for at least another generation.
Jahangir was captured by rebels in 1626 while he was on his way to Kashmir. Nur Jahan intervened to get her husband released. Jahangir was rescued but died on October 28, 1627. After Jahangir's death, Nur Jahan devoted some of her life to the making of perfume, an art form her mother had passed down
