Dr. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., and FAMILY, Civil Rights Area

Dr. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., and FAMILY, Civil Rights Area

Rev. Bernice Albertine King, Preacher, Public Speaker, Lawyer

Nationally and internationally known as one of the most powerful, motivating and life-changing orators and speakers, Bernice A. King leaves her audiences spellbound and challenged.

Born the youngest daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Bernice King began her oratorical journey when she spoke in her mother’s stead at the United Nations at age 17. Over the years, Bernice King has had the occasion to speak in Sydney, Australia, Lubeck, Germany, Argentina, and South America to name a few. In the summer of 2000, Bernice King narrated the “Lincoln Portrait” along with a symphony orchestra in Keil, Germany at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.

Bernice King is a graduate of Spelman College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Masters of Divinity and Doctorate of Law Degrees from Emory University.

King has also received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Wesley College. She is currently a member of the State Bar of Georgia.

With a strong concern for community and family partnership, Bernice King was privileged to serve as a law clerk in the Fulton County Juvenile Court system, under Judge Glenda Hatchett, where she interacted with troubled boys and girls. It was there that King realized that a growing number of teens have been double victims: first of society and secondly of an ineffective legal system based in retribution instead of rehabilitation. Bernice King has also served as a mentor to a group of 5th grade girls at an inner-city Atlanta elementary school, where she spent time molding their character and values so that one day they too would become a force to be reckoned with in the world. Among other community activities and services, Bernice King was instrumental in organizing coalitions to close a pornographic shop located within a mile of a local high school. She also assisted The Dow Company in building a Habitat for Humanity home in Americus, Georgia.

As an ordained preacher, Bernice King is a minister at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia under the dynamic leadership of Bishop Eddie L. Long. In addition to being a speaker/orator/preacher, King has planned and organized numerous conferences, seminars and workshops for all walks of life. Bernice King has successfully coordinated non-violent conflict resolution conferences for college and university students and women and family conferences; she has conducted a class on race relations at Mississippi College in Jackson, MS and taught a year- long leadership development class at her previous church.

Bernice King has been featured on such shows as, Oprah, BET Talk with Tavis Smiley and the Judge Hachett Show to name a few and in such magazines as People Magazine, Ebony, Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Gospel Today and Charisma Magazine. This year American Legacy Magazine recognized Bernice as a "Woman of Strength and Courage." King has also guest hosted a live lunchtime television show on CNN.

As an author, Bernice King has to her credit, her first book, Hard Questions, Heart Answers, a compelling and inspiring book.

In late 2007 in Indonesia, significant progress continues in reconstruction and recovery efforts following the devastating December 2004 tsunami that struck the coast of the northern province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (commonly called Aceh) on Sumatra Island. The disaster killed more than 103,000 Aceh residents and left more than 530,000 homeless. One-third of those affected were children. New schools and child centres, and the restoration of other social services have enabled many families to return to their original communities. Sixty-seven permanent schools have been built with UNICEF assistance, 126 are under construction, and another 153 are planned. The schools are constructed under UNICEF's 'build back better' policy and are designed to be earthquake-resistant and 'child-friendly,' offering education in a safe and healthy learning environment. UNICEF also supports ongoing child-protection initiatives. Thirteen districts now have procedures in place for managing child rights violations, and district court officials have been trained in juvenile justice issues. UNICEF helped establish child-friendly desks in police stations in four districts and a juvenile justice court in the province to ensure the sensitive treatment of legal and criminal cases involving children. In the areas of water and sanitation, UNICEF and its partners continue to provide water to 182,000 internally displaced persons and other families. Rural Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects, such as latrine building and hygiene education, have reached some 20,000 people in 157 communities and more than 50,000 children in schools.

Bishop's Palace - Galveston, Texas

Bishop's Palace - Galveston, Texas

HDR 9XP

The Bishop's Palace (a.k.a. Gresham House) is a contributing building in the East End Historic District, a National Historic Landmark. The house is listed in the National Register of Historic Places at the national level of significance in the area of architecture. Architectural historians list the Bishop's Palace (Gresham House) as one of the most significant of Victorian residences in the country.

The house was built from 1887 to 1892 for Colonel Walter Gresham and his wife Josephine, with whom he had nine children. An attorney and entrepreneur, Gresham came to Galveston from Virginia following his service in the Civil War. He was a founder of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad, eventually working to bring about the merger of the Santa Fe with the Atchison and Topeka Railroad. He also served in the Texas Legislature.

Nicholas Clayton designed the house. The small lot and oversized house make it an anomaly among similar houses of its period and architectural style. It is Victorian; however, it is more specifically described as Chateausque given the intricate combination of materials, cast iron galleries and complex roof system. Chateausque is a derivative of the French Revival popularized in the latter part of the 19th century by Richard Morris Hunt. Nicholas Clayton, however, expanded on the style by using varicolored and irregularly shaped stone, round Romanesque and depressed Tudor arches with heavily articulated carvings of vegetation, animals, people, and imaginary creatures. Constructed of steel and stone (it survived the Great Storm of 1900 virtually unscathed), the Bishop's Palace soars three stories over a raised basement level, with steep roofs and long sculptural chimneys. Typical of Clayton, he used a combination of simple geometric forms in bold massing to create an additional dramatic effect. In Galveston's great period of mansion building – the 1870s, 80s and 90s – Gresham's commission of Nicholas Clayton, Galveston's premier architect, resulted in Clayton's most spectacular residential design and arguably the finest of the "Broadway beauties."

The interior spaces are grand with exotic materials such as a pair of Sienna marble columns flanking the entrance hall. The first floor rooms have fourteen foot ceilings that are coved and coffered. An octagonal mahogany stairwell is forty feet tall with stained glass on five sides. The stair is lit by a large octagonal skylight. A massive fireplace in the front parlor is made of Santo Domingo mahogany. The house includes abundant stained glass, wood carvings, and decorative plaster ceilings and walls.

Bishop's Palace

Bishop's Palace

The Bishop’s Palace is one of the best known and most widely recognized historic attractions in the country. It is listed by the U. S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark, and has been named by the American Institute of Architects as the 14th most important Victorian building in America.

In Galveston’s great period of mansion building--the 1870s, 80s and 90s--Gresham’s commission of Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier architect, resulted in Clayton’s most spectacular residential design and arguably the finest of the “Broadway beauties.”

Constructed of steel and stone (it survived the Great Storm of 1900 virtually unscathed), the Bishop's Palace soars three stories over a raised basement level, with steep roofs and long sculptural chimneys. The building is classified as "Chateauesque," a derivative of the French revival style popular in the last quarter of the 19th century. It has many distinctive touches, ranging from varicolored stone to round Romanesque and depressed Tudor arches. Its facade features highly articulated carvings of plants, animals, people and other creatures.
The 7,500 square feet of interiors are as lavish, with rare woods and ornate and idiosyncratic details. The front parlor boasts a large fireplace mantel made of Santo Domingo mahogany that was a first-place winner of the 1876 World's Fair in Philadelphia. In the adjoining music room is a mantel made of onyx, pewter and silver that won a first prize at the New Orleans Exhibition.

In 1923 the Roman Catholic Diocese of Galveston purchased the house, and, situated across the street from the Sacred Heart Church, it served as a bishop's residence. After the diocesan offices were moved to Houston, the diocese opened the mansion to the public in 1963, with proceeds from tours being used to help fund the Newman Center, operating in the basement, serving Catholic students at the nearby University of Texas Medical Branch.

The home is estimated to have cost $250,000 at the time; today its value is estimated at over $5.5 million.

The Galveston Historical Foundation provides guided tours of the house on weekends.

Abelardo Carranza Strasburger (son of Gen. Jesus Carranza Garza). 20) __ 21) __
[I believe that several others in this list may also have belonged to the extended Carranza family.]

As governor of the state of Coahuila (Dec. 1911- Mar. 1913), Venustiano Carranza had been a supporter of Francisco I. Madero (President of Mexico Nov. 1911 – Feb. 1913) partly because Madero was also born and raised and retained strong family ties in their native Coahuila. After the assassination of President Madero in Mar. 1913, Carranza organized his supporters into the Constitutionalist Party, assigned positions to various relatives, and assumed the presidency of Mexico. (But so did Pedro Lascurain 1913, Victoriano Huerta 1913 - 1914, and Francisco S. Carvajal 1914. I do not mean to make light of the revolutionary struggle; it is just that the politics were very complicated.) Venustiano Carranza retained the post until 1920.

On the night of December 30, 1914, Gen. Jesus Carranza and members of his staff were returning from the west coast of Mexico after a trip to inspect ports. They were passing through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to return to Veracruz when they were ambushed and taken prisoner by a rival revolutionary, General Alfonso Santibanez, who had territorial loyalties to the isthmus. Santibanez telegraphed Venustiano Carranza, demanding military equipment and a large sum of money in exchange for his prisoners. Carranza refused to bend to thuggery and, instead of money, sent troops.

Santibanez countered by executing all but three of his prisoners by firing squad on Dec. 31, 1914, at San Jeronimo, Oxaca. Among the dead were Col. Manuel Caballero, Chief of Staff; Col. Pedro Lopez Morales; Capt. Ruperto Castilla; Lts. Mariano Urbina, Leonardo G. Vidaurri (my great uncle), and Leonel Marquez; Second Lt. Francisco Hernandez Alatorre; Sgt. Ines Fragoso; Tirso Pacheco and seven other soldiers. Santibanez saved Gen. Jesus and Jesus’ son and nephew for later.

On January 2, 1915, Carranza troops reached San Jeronimo to find that Santibanez had fled to the mountains of Oaxaca with 150 men and his three prisoners. News reached Venustiano Carranza on February 5 from the governor of Oaxaca that Santibanez had been apprehended and killed but that his brother Gen. Jesus and the two eighteen year old cousins had been found dead.

Although born and raised a U.S. citizen, my great uncle Leonardo G. Vidaurri probably felt the call to arms for two reasons. Prospects for third sons in Laredo, TX, were unexciting compared to a position in a revolutionary army and family emotions were running high because of strong family ties in Coahuila. Leonardo’s great aunt had been Francisco I. Madero’s step mother. Leonardo had turned 18 the month before his execution.

Built in 1872 for Benjamin H. Epperson, the House of the Seasons derives its name from the cupola with its stained glass windows that create an illusion of the seasons of the year. The home is a fine example of the transition period between Greek revival and Victorian styles of architecture. In plan and overall form, it is Greek revival. However, the detailing is Victorian with certain Italianate characteristics, such as the tall arched windows, the bracketed cornices, the gallery, the cupola, and the projecting bay windows. The circular opening in the first floor ceiling allows a view of the frescoes in the dome. Benjamin Epperson (1826-1878), a confidant of Sam Houston, was a distinguished lawyer, political leader, and entrepreneur. He served many terms in the Texas Legislature and was elected to the U. s. Congress in 1866, but did not serve because the southern delegations were not seated. When he built the house, Epperson was listed as one of the wealthiest men in the state and was respected as a major influence in Texas politics. Throughout most of its history, the House of the Seasons has served as a residence. It has also been used as a boarding house and as the main building of Jefferson College, a World War II veterans' college. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1965

Bingham City Cemetery

Bingham City Cemetery

The exact date when burials began at Bingham City Cemetery is not known. According to town board minutes, the cemetery was created in 1913. One tombstone was found documenting a death date of 1873 and several others give death dates of 1879. The earliest documented birth is in 1824.

Bingham City was disincorporated in 1971. By law, maintenance of the cemetery was turned over to the largest state agency operating within the city limits, that being Jordan School District. The records they inherited were threadbare, incomplete and highly inaccurate.

Before being swallowed by the open pit coppermine (Kennecott); the city of Bingham was located just below Utah Copper/Kennecott Copper Mines in a small mountain pass. Mining was done at the top of the mountain and along the ridgeline above where the homes were built. Bingham City itself was incorporated in 1904, but it is clear that burials in this cemetery were taking place well before that.

Bingham City Cemetery, also referred to by some locals as the “Kennecott Copper Cemetery” consists mainly of past residents of towns or camps that used to be up the canyon. They were all mining towns - and have since been removed in favor of the copper mine. These towns - known as Bingham Canyon, Carr Fork, Copperfield, Copperhill, Copperton, Dinkeyville, Freeman Gulch, Frogtown, Highland Boy, Lark, Leadmine, Lower Main, Phoenix, and Telegraph - mostly do not exist. (The only one that still does is Copperton - with around 250 residents.)

43 known War Veterans are buried at this cemetery, including those who fought in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I and II, Korean and Vietnam War. In addition, many of the people buried in the Bingham City cemetery are from more than 30 countries and 38 states within the U.S. This cemetery is known for having one of the most diverse, multi ethnic backgrounds in the Salt Lake valley. Burials were found from various areas of the world including Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cuba, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Macedonia, Mexico, Montenegro, Norway, Nova Scotia, Puerto Rico, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Wales, Yugoslavia and 38 states within the United States.

When you think about it, These people braved crossing the ocean and then found their way across the United States in search of employment at Utah Copper and Kennecott Copper Mines. They helped settle the valley and build the American empire from the ground up.

It is because of this diversity that many headstones are in different languages. Please make a notation that some names were “Americanized.” Do not get discouraged it you cannot locate your ancestor at first glance. Some examples of “Americanized” names are Brkljacic to Blockovich, Busljeta to Bullet, Epop to Error, Jengich to Yengich etc. Names were also spelled phonetically which accounts for the many discrepancies in spelling. Also noted are errors due to translation - such as dates of birth, death, and other histories.

When walking through the cemetery, you'll notice that parents buried several babies and small children due to epidemics like Flu, Typhoid Fever, Diphtheria and Whooping Cough. Young men lost their lives from miner's lung, mining accidents and violent deaths such as murder. In addition, you'll see that some people died from many diseases that are 100% curable today. It is heartbreaking to see the hundreds of deaths of people under the age of 30.

Keep in mind that the deceased buried here were mostly laborers and many did not have money set aside to buy a headstone. Thus, you will find everything from painted stones to wooden markers, to simply an outline in bricks - with no name on the plot. Often, families are buried together in unmarked gravesites with only one parent being noted with a headstone at best. To say the least, times past were hard for these people as they suffered through several wars and the great depression.

In 1999, as it expanded, the Kennecott Copper Mines relocated the remains of those buried at Chandler Cemetery (Dry Fork area) to Bingham City Cemetery. The Chandler cemetery was moved when Kennecott expanded mining operations in the canyon. That cemetery consists mainly of burials that were from the Chandler family and snow slide victims from Finland. Most of these were unmarked, and unnamed. There were no cemetery records at the time, so the bodies were simply moved and labelled to the best of our ability.

Finally, within the last 40 years, a fire and later a flood swept through the Bingham City cemetery which caused the metal markers to become unreadable. It also caused damage to some gravesites. Vandalism has occurred at this cemetery. Time and deterioration has resulted in the inability to decipher some headstones. For those that were able, Brad Jencks (a descendent of some of those buried here - who has made it his personal quest to restore and p

Abernathy Boys Statues

Abernathy Boys Statues

The Adventure of the Abernathy Boys

In the summer of 1909 the Abernathy brothers set off alone on horseback, riding from their Cross Roads ranch in Tillman County to Santa Fe, New Mexico and back. Louie (Bud) was nine years old. Temple was only five.

On April 5, 1910, with Bud and Temple astride their horse Sam Bass and Geronimo, the boys traveled east. They were on the trail for two months, riding to meet their friend, former President Theodore Roosevelt, as he returned to New York City from an African safari. Along the way, the brothers fell in love with automobiles. They bought a Brush Runabout in New York , and Bud and Temple drove themselves home, making the trip in just twenty-three days.

When Temple was seven and Bud was eleven, they were challenged to ride from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific in sixty days. At stake was a $10,000 prize. The boys left from Coney Island on August 11, 1911, and - 3,619 miles later - arrived at the Pacific just two days late. Although thy did not win the prize, they set a record for the fastest cross-country ride on horseback. This record has never been broken.

The Abernathys made their last long-distance ride in June , 1913, driving a custom designed, two-seat, twin-engine Indian motorcycle from their Cross Roads Ranch to New York City. This time they returned to Oklahoma by train.

Temple grew up to be an oilman, and Bud became a lawyer. Both settled and raised families in north Texas. However, it was in Tillman County that the remarkable Abernathy brothers - the youngest long riders - began and ended their greatest adventures.

Mike Procopio: Offensive and Defensive Strategies for the Pick & Roll (DVD)

with Mike Procopio, Attack Athletics Player Development Trainer; Instructor Michael Jordan Flight School and Nike Skill Academies; Has worked with over 100 NBA players including Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Paul Pierce, Kevin Durant, and others The pick and roll is a potent offensive weapon utilized by teams ranging from middle school to the "pros." In this DVD, Mike Procopio builds the pick and roll offense from the ground up and then demonstrates how to defend it. Pick & Roll Offense Learn techniques and strategies that make pick & rolls successful! Procopio demonstrates the pick & roll versus the defensive "hedge" and switching defenses. He progresses from 3-on-0 to 3-on-3 as he demonstrates the weak side duck-in and the duck-in high/low option. These drills will help players improve their ability to dribble penetrate, thus requiring two defenders to guard the ball handler. Next, Procopio takes the pick & roll and uses it to build team offense using his 5-on-0 pick & roll "transition drill." He emphasizes sprinting to the screen and post men rolling hard and demonstrates the various pick & roll options as players transition into full-court offense. Pick & Roll Defense Procopio's pick and roll defense attempts to stop and contain the drive and to always be in position to challenge shots. Procopio introduces "stunting" using a 3-on-3 drill that emphasizes on-ball pressure and defending the pass and cut. Learn the most effective methods for defending the pick and roll such as hedging, which is great for stopping dribble penetration. The Ice Method helps protect your bigs from getting fouls away from the basket. Learn to defense the high pick and roll using the Bump & Switch and the Late Switch. This DVD is a must for any coach wanting to add the pick and roll to their offensive arsenal or simply wanting to better defend it. 2011.
