Canterbury's Law: The Complete Series
Emmy® Award winner Julianna Margulies stars in Canterbury's Law, "a lightning-paced legal drama that roars with a feisty thunder" (Matt Roush, TV Guide). Cunning, shrewd and tough as nails, defense attorney Elizabeth Canterbury (Margulies) takes on the risky cases no other lawyer could possibly win in this edgy and "highly entertaining" (John Griffiths, US Weekly) six-episode DVD collection. Whether she's battling the city's ruthless deputy attorney general, her independent-minded associates or her long-suffering husband Mat (Aidan Quinn), Elizabeth fights for justice no matter what the cost!
“Why are lawyers buried 30 feet underground? Because deep down they really are good people.” That crack, delivered by a character in Canterbury’s Law about his own profession, pretty accurately reflects how a lot of folks feel about attorneys. But that hasn’t stopped television producers from churning out shows about them, or viewers from watching, and this short-lived Fox series (with all six episodes on two discs) is a fine addition to the canon. Julianna Margulies stars as Elizabeth Canterbury, a defense attorney struggling to maintain her private practice in Providence, Rhode Island. Like several other female leads these days--The Closer’s Kyra Sedgwick and Saving Grace’s Holly Hunter are but two examples--she isn’t always, or even often, especially likable; though she’s clearly good at her job, Canterbury can be arrogant and humorless, with a knack for alienating everyone around her, friend or foe. She also has a penchant for bending the legal rules, starting with the very first episode (directed by Mike Figgis of Leaving Las Vegas renown), in which she commits two felonies in the process of gaining an acquittal for an accused child murderer. That stunt puts her directly in the crosshairs of Deputy District Attorney Zach Williams (Terry Kinney), her vindictive nemesis, but it’s hardly Liz’s only problem. Indeed, the unsolved abduction of their son three years earlier has put an unbearable strain on her marriage to law professor Matt Furey (an excellent Aidan Quinn), climaxing in an extraordinarily bitter (and drunken) scene in the third episode, “What Goes Around,” that’s straight out of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolff. The ongoing personal element of the show, also including Canterbury’s relationships with nominal partner Russell Krauss (Ben Shenkman) and private investigator-lover Frank Angstrom (James McCaffrey), is more compelling than the actual cases, but it’s also more than enough to keep us involved in this slick, fast-moving show. The box set has no bonus material. --Sam Graham

A View from Canterbury's Oldest Church
Location: Canterbury, England looking from St. Martin's Church to Canterbury Cathedral on the other side of town. This church is a patchwork of eras starting with the heathen king bringing a Catholic Frenchwoman to England as his queen. She started this church.
An old man with a thick accent showed us all the secrets he knew. Both churches are now Anglican. The Cathedral in the distance had the most amazing Evensong service of any church we visited. A boys and mens choir sings the Psalms. Absolutely breathtaking--especially in that church--beautiful (two of the guys were especially cute too).
Time: late September around lunchtime.
Temperature: Coolish and cloudy.
Temperament: Oddly Zen like looking from one church to another. Standing in an old grave, looking down on the city that's grown up around it. Strangely peaceful.
Canterbury button
This button was difficult to photograph because it is so dark. It has the arms of the City of Canterbury, with an elipse above bearing the letters 'C. C. C.' for Canterbury City Council. The style on the back dates it to circa 18th century.

Last week I had the unique opportunity to tour several buildings on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, UT. It was fascinating to be inside some of these magnificent buildings on our own in a small group. It was most fun to see how these buildings are connected with underground tunnels for easy access for those that work within them.
I was able to take many photos, but we were always on the move so I didn't have time to have a tripod with me to capture as much as I wanted from various angles and in the best way for the low light. That said I have a few others I will share over the next few days.
This was a quick parting shot as we walked through one of the tunnels.

Camera Gear I love to use!
These camera gears I love!
-Nikon D90 with grip, excellent handling, beautiful screen, makes pretty colours.
-Sigma 30mm f/1.4, very well abused and battered but it still works well. Super sharp wide open, focus ring is like butter, great lens!
-Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, amazingly sharp lens, very sharp and fast. It doesn't zoom much but I only use it at 11, or 16mm. it's not meant to be a versatile zoom at all, it's meant to be a low light beastly wide angle. They're not super expensive at $600 a pop they go very quick and resell used for pretty much new price.
-SB600 and 3x SB28's. (one SB28 was being used for the photo) great speedlites, they're no nonsense awesome lights, built well, give out great power and I only use them in manual anyways, so iTTL isn't much of a concern for me.
-CTR-301P triggers, easiest, cheapest and funnest way to get your flashes off camera. There's a whole 'nother world to photography once you get that speedlite off the hot shoe of your camera.
All these very basic equipments create beautiful pictures. With a bit of imagination they can make any picture in mind.
Some people say "well I can't take pictures because I don't have that kinda camera" well does Shaquille O'Neal need the latest Jordans to make his free throws? Or could he play barefoot and still beat your average joe at the park playing basketball?

So, you think you can ball, huh? Well, the 90s called, and they challenge you to a game of half court. They'll even let you sport these awesome adidas EQT B-Ball men's basketball shoes. These throwback kicks pay tribute to the 90s EQT's that dominated the streets and courts, and the leprechaun graphic adds a touch of Irish flair to them. Lace these up and travel back to a time when you could watch all the Wayans' kids on one show and you didn't need to take the adidas EQT B-Ball men's basketball shoes off so you could get through security. They might be retro, but the adidas EQT B-Ball men's basketball shoes are ready to give you top performance on the court. Another nifty trick they keep under their belt (actually, shoes don't have belts, but you know what we mean) is the removable boot socks. Each pair comes with an extra boot sock so you can flip up the style on the fly. If you do time travel to the 90s to shoot some hoops, that extra bit of flavor might come in handy if you suddenly find yourself cornered and need some funky camouflage.

Assessment and Evaluation of Noise Controls on Roof Bolting Equipment and a Method for Predicting Sound Pressure Levels in Underground Coal Mining
Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread and serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries despite 25 years of regulation. Every day, 80% of the nation's miners go to work in an environment where the time weighted average (TWA) noise level exceeds 85 dBA and more than 25% of the miners are exposed to a TWA noise level that exceeds 90 dBA, the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Additionally, MSHA coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2002 show that 65% of the equipment whose operators exceeded 100% noise dosage comprise only seven different types of machines; auger miners, bulldozers, continuous miners, front end loaders, roof bolters, shuttle cars (electric), and trucks. In addition, the MSHA data indicate that the roof bolter is third among all the equipment and second among equipment in underground coal whose operators exceed 100% dosage. A research program was implemented to: 1) determine, characterize and to measure sound power levels radiated by a roof bolting machine during differing drilling configurations (thrust, rotational speed, penetration rate, etc.) and utilizing differing types of drilling methods in high compressive strength rock media (>20,000 psi). The research approach characterized the sound power level results from laboratory testing and provided the mining industry with empirical data relative to utilizing differing noise control technologies (drilling configurations and types of drilling methods) in reducing sound power level emissions on a roof bolting machine; 2) distinguish and correlate the empirical data into one, statistically valid, equation, in which, provided the mining industry with a tool to predict overall sound power levels of a roof bolting machine given any type of drilling configuration and drilling method utilized in industry; 3) provided the mining industry with several approaches to predict or determine sound pressure levels in an underground coal mine utilizing laboratory test results from a roof bolting machine and 4) described a method for determining an operators' noise dosage of a roof bolting machine utilizing predicted or determined sound pressure levels.

Caphouse Colliery National Coal Mining Museum Wakefield Yorkshire
The National Coal Mining Museum for England is located at Caphouse Colliery, on the western edge of the Yorkshire coalfield, where mining has been carried out for centuries.
A plan dated 1791 showing workings from 1789 to 1795, includes a shaft on the Caphouse site. It is probably the oldest coal-mine shaft still in everyday use in Britain today.
Before 1827 the colliery was owned by the Milnes family, but then passed into the ownership of the Lister Kaye family, until 1917.
After 1917 the colliery was run by a company, which included the ex-manager Percy Greaves, a colliery owner in his own right. Around 1941 Arthur Sykes of Lockwood and Elliott bought the colliery and remained as owner until Nationalisation in 1947. By 1985 the coal at Caphouse was exhausted and its conversion to a museum began.
In 1988 the Yorkshire Mining Museum opened at Caphouse.
The Museum was granted national status in 1995.

Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause permanent damage to the auditory nerve and/or its sensory components. Despite regulations and efforts by government and industry to reduce noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), it is still a problem in the U.S. coal mining industry. The Mine Safety and Health Administration noise standard (30 CFR3 62), which was enacted in September 2000, is aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. To address NIHL in various aspects of coal mining and provide the necessary information to effectively implement control technologies, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures. Noise surveys consisting of full-shift worker noise exposure (dose) determination, time-motion studies (task observations), and equipment and/or area noise profiling were completed in 8 underground coal mines, 10 surface coal mines, and 8 coal preparation plants. The studies revealed that more than 40% of all workers monitored were subject to noise exposures above 90 dBA TWA8. A summary of these studies is presented, their application to administrative and engineering controls is discussed, and exposure reduction methods are reviewed.

Rising Tides (The Chesapeake Bay Saga, Book 2)
Ethan Quinn must rise above his dark and painful past to find his one chance at happiness.
Set on the windswept shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Nora Roberts's Rising Tides, the second book in the Quinn Brothers trilogy, continues the story of the lives and loves of adopted brothers Ethan, Cameron, and Philip Quinn. Eager to honor their father's dying wish that their other brother, Seth, be cared for, the three settle into life with a 10-year-old. Of all the brothers, it is Ethan who finds himself drawn to the young boy, because both suffered horrific abuse before being adopted by the Quinns. Time hasn't extinguished Ethan's pain, only buried it deep within his heart, a fact that may keep him from the only woman he has ever loved. A moving contemporary with universal appeal, Rising Tides is Nora Roberts at her best.

MANILA, Philippines - Agents of the Philippine Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Friday arrested a jail officer for possession of P500,000 worth of cocaine.
The PDEA said Ernesto Villones, desk officer of the Caloocan City Jail, was arrested around 4 p.m. Friday.
Villones's arrest, meanwhile, prompted PDEA agents to conduct surprise inspections at the city jail.
Agents search all prisoners for drugs for 6 full hours, but the operation turned out negative.
Meanwhile, police on Saturday raided a huge shabu laboratory in Taguig and confiscated modern equipment for cooking shabu.

PDEA executives meet with foreign counterparts on drug trafficking
By Jerry Botial (The Philippine Star) Updated June 09, 2010 12:00 AM
Philipine Drug Enforcement Agency chief Dionisio Santiago gestures as he talks with Brazilian Ambassador Alcides Prates during a meeting yesterday. Boy Santos
MANILA, Philippines - The Task Force on Drug Couriers (TFDC) co-chaired by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) yesterday met with their foreign counterparts in other parts of the world primarily to discuss ways to strengthen international cooperation in the common fight against illegal drug trafficking.
PDEA chief Dionisio Santiago and DFA intel chief Admiral Amable Tolentino led the locals while the other participants in the TFDC’s first meeting with their counterparts included Ambassadors Alcides Prates of Brazil; Nawalage Bennet Cooray of Sri Lanka; and Hatice Pinar Isik of Turkey as well as staff officer Veegee Sison for Peru, police attache Senior superintendent Muhammad Nur Usmad of Indonesia; second secretary and Consul Chandaravuth Tan of Cambodia and staff officer Dennard Dacumos for Thailand.
Santiago said the only effective solution to the fight against illegal drug trafficking worldwide is international cooperation.
“We will expand participation of other countries in this conference. We expect memorandum of agreements (MOAs) forged with other countries with similar concerns like Iran,” Santiago said.
The PDEA chief said the country will soon be seeing representatives from the Middle East.
Prates, for his part, said Brazil takes interest and concern in this endeavor as the problem is not new to them.
“We have faced this problem for a long time. It is vital and crucial that state and local governments are involved in intensified cooperation (against a common enemy). It is also clear that in Brazil we have socio-economic problems. We can’t deal effectively with the drug menace without solving these local (Brazil) problems,” said Prates in apparent reference to similar prevailing conditions in the country.
Prates also pointed out the crucial role media plays in the fight against the drug menace.
“Media has an important role in this fight. There is in fact a great expectation from the people. Remember that the people victimized as drug couriers by the syndicates are otherwise law-abiding and not dangerous people. But when they are caught, they are meted out very heavy penalties. So, you have to tell them not to get involved in the illegal trade,” said Prates.

Blacksmith Shop Sign
Replica
Because a blacksmith made and repaired tools, hardware, and wagons, his services were essential and in constant demand before tools could be mass produced. Even the smallest of settlements usually contained a blacksmith shop. Since the blacksmith was a skilled artisan, he served as an apprentice for several years to learn the necessary techniques of the trade before opening his own business. By 1900 gasoline engines were revolutionizing the work of the blacksmith, and the large leather and wooden bellows had given way to efficient hand-cranked bellows attached to the forge. With the coming of the automotive age, a natural transformation was blacksmith becoming auto mechanic or machine shop owner.
This shop contains authentic equipment such as a Fairbanks Morse gasoline motor to run a 13-foot-long line shaft assembly, a grinder, tire shrinker, leg bench vise, drill press, forge air blower and foot-powered jibsaw and lathe.

Introducing the Brand New Skeletool CX from Leatherman Get back to basics -- the very cool basics -- with Leatherman's Skeletool CX. Today’s outdoor enthusiasts want to keep weight and volume to a minimum without sacrificing quality and true functionality, and that's what the Skeletool is all about. Many multitools have multiple options, but they’re often heavier -- and they're loaded with more features than most people actually need on a regular basis. Conversely, pocket knives are light and streamlined, but they render themselves useless when the task calls for a more versatile tool. Enter the new Skeletool platform, offering minimal weight, compact size and endless capabilities. Key User Features The Skeletool CX has a large straight knife blade that can be accessed while the tool is closed; to open it, just place your thumb in the thumbhole at the base of the blade and rotate it out until it's fully extended -- which will engage the safety lock. This locking mechanism is noted with a padlock symbol on the tool. To unlock the blade, press the locking mechanism towards the handle until the blade slides past the lock. Equipped with a universal bit driver, the Skeletool offers real utility options like no other multitool. To change the tool bits, simply unfold the tool and remove the bit from the bit driver -- and pop it out. And replacing bits is just as easy. Just press a new one into position and you're good to go. There's even a spare bit located in the handle side opposite the knife blade. This tool includes the following bits: Phillips #1 and #2, screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch. In the plier jaws you'll find a hard-wire cutter and a regular wire cutter. The regular wire cutter is great for softer grades of wire, but the hard-wire cutter is excellent for heavier jobs -- like cutting and bending fishhooks. Multitool Capabilities: The Skeletool keeps it simple -- and light, and compact, and easy to transport. Why waste time with pointless, heavy add-ons when all the basics are right at your fingertips? With its open hardware, skeletal design and hardy appearance, the Skeletool boasts a premium stainless steel blade, pliers, a universal bit driver, and a carabiner/bottle opener ... and that's it. Key Tech Specs: Length: 4 inches/10 cm closed Weight: 5 ounces/142 grams Materials: Stainless steel, Tungsten DLC coating, 154CM, carbon fiber (handle scale) Included Bits: Phillips #1 and #2, Screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch Leatherman makes a full range of complementary accessories and add-ons for this and other Leatherman products. Optional Accessories (not included) Spice up your Skeletool with genuine Leatherman accessories. Options include a bit kit that offers 21 double-ended bits for real versatility. From new belt sheaths to t-shirts and caps, genuine Leatherman accessories are durable, fun and show that you're a part of Leatherman World. With such a wide variety available, it's easy to find just the add-on that's right for you. Warranty All Leatherman products are covered by a 25-year limited warranty. If within 25 years from the purchase date of your genuine Leatherman tool you find any defect in material or workmanship, you can count on the manufacturer to make it right with fast warranty service. To obtain warranty service, return your tool to Leatherman Tool Group. Depending on the tool defect, they will decide whether to repair your tool or replace it with a product of equal or greater value. No variations, upgrades or refunds are offered. The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.

About Sevylor The road from Sevylor's founding in 1948 to its current role as the dominant supplier of a wide range of inflatables--such as kayaks, boats, and towables--is a long one, with plenty of original inventions and innovations along the way. Established in a city suburb of Vitry, France, by electronics engineer Berco Grimbert, Sevylor originally built electrical accessories, with a sideline business dedicated to using its high-frequency welding machines to manufacture PVC consumer goods. The first inflatable to receive rave notice was a small bathtub called the Dou Dou. Perfect for postwar France, the inflatable tub was portable, convenient, practical, easy to clean, durable, and, best of all, affordable. After moving to the picturesque Alsatian village of Buhl, the company expanded into developing valves, pumps, boats, inflatable pools, and a variety of water toys. In the ensuing years, Sevylor first developed a PVC that had "memory"--meaning it could return to its original shape regardless of temperature--and then made history by releasing an inflatable pool mattress with a headrest and circular pockets. In 1986, the company invented the Ski Bob, a real turning point in the evolution of the towables business. Today, Sevylor's innovative designs include tenders, hunting and fishing boats, specialty boats and kayaks, towables, snow tubes, air beds, pool floats, river tubes, swim and sport rings, and more.

Tesco's Car Park
Tesco's runs Tesco Computers for Schools for which it won the 'Cause Related Marketing Award for Excellence and Example of Best Practice bestowed by an outfit called Business in the Community.
This is what Andrew Simms in Tescopoly says about it..
"'Not immediately obvious is how much money you have to spend at Tesco to benefit from the scheme. Vounchers to exchange for equipment are available at limited times during the year (although for running the scheme Tesco gets the publicity benefit all year round). In order to get one of the mid-rank computers on offer, you have to spend around ?250,000. Similarly astonishing figures apply to Tesco's scheme supplying sports equipment to schools. To get a pack of three tennis balls, available from any average online retailer at around just ?1.25, you would have to spend ?1,130 at a Tesco supermarket. A pair of plastic inflatable armbands for swimming would set you back ?840; a football, ?2,200; a hockey stick, ?2,360; and to get a trampoline for your school, you would have to buy just under ?1 million worth of Tesco groceries. This is one expensive bounce."

sound like birdsong
“I grew up on a Malaysian beach. I played with sand and water and shells and fishing and climbing. It was idyllic.
“But that’s not what I want to talk to you about. My child is now two, nearly three. I take her out to parks and to the swings, but I have really strong mixed feelings about this. It is great for her to be there with other children and I quite enjoy meeting other parents, but to me the playground equipment is really boring. You can’t do anything with it once you have learned to climb it. There is nothing there that comes close to the variety of playing that I had as a child and all those sensations and sounds and smells. All the things I could find and do.
“It reminds me of the High Streets. Anywhere you go in England and in a lot of other places, the High Streets are all the same. The same shops, same logos and brands. These playgrounds all look the same. It’s almost as if someone had got a catalogue and picked out stuff from it at random to put in these places. But that can’t be right, can it?”
But another memory:
“I grew up on the west coast of Africa. On the beach. My play was amazing. Then I came here and was horrified at the play opportunities that my daughter had. She is older now so it is not an issue for her anymore. I found ways for her to play. But then one day I saw that they were going to put play equipment into the park opposite my house and my heart sank, thinking of all that brightly coloured stuff that was going to be put into the park and all the nuisance. Then it was installed and I began to hear the sounds of children playing there and see all the mums out together with their kids.
“The sound was like birdsong. It was beautiful.”
National-Greens-Catalog-Playgrounds
Modern playgrounds require modern equipment, surroundings and accommodations. Our playgrounds are built to very high standards and safety is priority one in every design. Even long, luscious real grass conceals a hard layer of earth and stone beneath. To fall on this kind of ground is rather painful; in the worst case, it can cause serious injury. Playground synthetic grass offers a graded surface with a thick foam cushion that is hidden beneath its surface. Then its long fibers a filled with small shock absorbing rubber pellets that provide a soft pillow like cusion when falling. Our playground turf can be installed with new or preexisting equipment. We can also supply the equipment needed for any playground. Artificial grass provides a far superior protective ground surface for outdoor play areas, particularly areas with climbing frames and raised play equipment. Tougher than real grass, safer than real grass. No room for playground equipment? Let us design a custom play area for your family. Kids can play in a safe environment free from allergens, pesticides, mud and stains. These play areas are built to the same standards as our full size playground safety specifications and can have equipment added at any time.

a real nuisance
In almost all play memory sessions with parents of young children, the issue of dogs came up.
People would be sharing their memories quite happily and then stop and say that they could not let their children out to play now because of the dogs.
They said they could teach children to manage roads and they had a strong feeling that ‘stranger danger’ was exaggerated, but dogs were a real nuisance.
It’s true that dogs have been trained to bite and hold onto expensive playground equipment.
Unknown dogs do run off the lead and run up to children.
And of course, dogs are allowed to foul any area of grass. Where playground fences have been taken down, play areas are fouled and open to roaming dogs. Even where playgrounds or grassed community areas are fenced, dogs are let in and allowed to run around, foul and are then lifted out by their owners.
It is clear from the people I talked to that it is not TV and computers or parental fear that often stops children playing. Rather it is the dog and its mess that mean that children in Tower Hamlets are not out playing as much as they could be.
Of course there are many conscientious dog owners, but this is of little compensation to the parent who has just been remembering their playful childhood and is inspired to take their toddler out to roll down a grassy slope only to find....

- Load (something, esp. a gun that has been fired) again
- Handloading or reloading is the process of loading firearm cartridges or shotgun shells by assembling the individual components (brass/shotshell, primer, powder, and bullet/shot), rather than purchasing completely-assembled, factory-loaded cartridges.
- (reload) recharge: load anew; "She reloaded the gun carefully"
- In a reloading scam, a victim is repeatedly approached by con artists, often until "sucked dry". This form of fraud is perpetrated on those more susceptible to pressure after the first losses, perhaps because of hopes to recover money previously invested, perhaps because of inability to say "no"

Reloading some 30-06 ammo
I'm reloading some 30-06 ammo with the Dillon 550B. I had previously sized , deprimed, and trimmed the cases, so I only needed to use the bullet seating die to finish these off. I didn't use the auto powder measure that comes with the Dillon because it doesn't meter the IMR4350 powder too well. Instead, I used the RCBS electronic scale and manually loaded the powder. The result are much more accurate loads, but it does take a little longer.
Case: Remington Peters
Primer: Winchester Large Rifle
Powder: IMR4350
Charge: 54.5 grains
Bullet: Hornady 168 grain BTHP

Saturday morning run
This story, written by myself, was inspired by the trip on which this photo was created:
When you step on the train at 6:33 AM in Naperville and make the right turn into one half of the car, there are but a handful on the lower level and maybe ten on both sides of the upper level. Most of them are sleeping or reading, some have the tell-tale white iPod earbuds; some are reading, and one or two sits and looks out the window at the similarly empty downtowns as they're passed, station by station. The conductor comes by. You say good morning, he replies with the same. You ask for a "five-dollar ticket", a long way of saying "weekend pass". He peels off a ticket from a roll he has, punches a single box, and accepts your paper bearing the depiction of Abraham Lincoln and walks off to collect his next fare. A few people get on with each stop toward the city but the car remains nearly empty, with the train only absorbing a mere half dozen or so at each station. As it approaches Chicago, an appreciable din rises in the car; a few cell phones ring and their owners begin to chat. Upon our arrival on Union Station's track 2 in Chicago, they line up, one by one, and exit the train. Some are in the vestibule before the train stops; others wait in their seats until the queue has cleared before them.
As you step off the train and onto the platform, you make a right turn like you've done so many times in the past, it seems almost involuntary like breathing or blinking. You walk down the platform, past the beams supporting the ceiling. Each one reads the same thing: 2 - 4. Overhead you see advertisement signs hanging from the ceiling. Joan Cusack appeals to you to try U.S. Cellular. A Hewlett-Packard mobile phone now runs on Windows. Stop and eat at Noodles and Company. Signs above tell the engineers just how far they have before they hit the end of the track. 300, 250, 200, 150, 100. You follow the rest of the herd, filing through the double automatic doors and into the station.
You step onto the concourse, the grand concourse that has seen a billion passengers in its existence. To the right is a small waiting area down a short stairway, perhaps four or five rungs, and the doors leading to even-numbered platforms: track 4, track 6, track 8, and so on. But you make a left turn, like you've done so many times before. You don't know why, because you always end up turning right and proceeding into the Amtrak waiting area. But you do anyway.
The experience of Chicago Union Station in the early hours on a Saturday is an eerie one. This structure handles a third of a million people every weekday. White-collar downtown commuters filing off in the mornings, returning in the evening for their suburban homes. As you walk by, you see the small newsstand. The big steel gate is rolled down two-thirds of the way; a stockboy is loading up the racks with the morning editions and snack treats. You look for the people, the 300,000 who come by every day. You see very few. Most of those you see are police - both private rent-a-cops and Chicago's finest. As you pass by the Amtrak waiting area, you steal a glance and see a smattering of passengers who are still waiting in their seats, sustained all night by complimentary bad coffee, waiting for a train to begin boarding that still has no equipment. There's only a few morning commuters beyond the concourse, and you don't bother making eye contact with any of them.
You pass through and eventually find yourself on the north concourse, the other side of the station. This is where more trains, trains on the Milwaukee District and on the North Central Service for the north and west suburbs, start and finish their runs. You see below the marquees announcing that you are about to enter the platform servicing Track 15 that this is an exit to Madison Street. This is what you want, so you go. As you walk down the platform, the experience is more eerie yet. You look to your left and see a single Metra locomotive, resplendent in blue paint, sitting silently on a service track. To your right, you see one train, it will depart in a while for points west. You notice a single hard-hatted employee with an orange safety vest walking down one service platform; you also notice a single morning commuter, walking the same plank you are. The entire area is lit by boring orange vapor lamps, save for the smallest slivers of daylight peeking around the corners beyond the ends of the platforms. Slowly but surely, you encounter the end of the platform, which is a staircase that goes up. And up you go, to street level.
The Madison Street entrance area is situated a foot or two below the street level itself. The area is made of a purple marble stone; you look up and see a few cabs - a yellow cab with the name Yellow on the side, and an orange one behind it entitled Wolley. You walk up and find yourself deposited on the sidewalk proper. To your right is a bridge over a branch of the Chicago River; to y
