Prince William
Tall ships youth trust

Prince William is one of two tall ships used by the Tall Ships Youth Trust (formerly the Sail Training Association). This British charity aims to promote self-confidence, responsibility, teamwork and similar qualities in young people through sailing Prince William and Stavros S Niarchos. The former Sail Training Association was previously equipped with two schooners, Malcolm Miller and Sir Winston Churchill, but these were seen as too old for further use (in terms of accommodation and so on, since the rigs are traditional) and were replaced. As of November 2007 the Prince William was laid up as the trust awaits the sale of one of the two brigs.

The TSYT's ships are two-masted brigs, with the rig designed by Michael Willoughby (his description of the design). The hulls were built in Germany as cruise ships for the West Indies, designed to carry masts and sails and use them from time to time, but not to be serious sailing vessels. This project was cancelled and the part-finished hulls were bought in 1997 by the TSYT. They were then modified by Appledore Shipbuilders to take the strains of a full sailing rig and to improve their sailing properties, including the addition of a new deeper keel holding fifty tons of ballast.

Prince William's rig is designed according to traditional rules, occasionally modified slightly with trainees in mind. The foremast is slightly shorter than the main mast, but they are otherwise identical. Each consists of a steel lower mast and topmast and timber topgallant and royal mast. Spars are steel on the lower and topmasts (course, lower topsail and upper topsail yards) and timber above this (topgallant and royal yards). Access to the tops is by a vertical "jacob's ladder" down to the ratlines, rather than inverted futtock shrouds. There is a gold sovereign placed under the foremast where it meets the keel, a tradition supposed to give the ship luck.

The accommodation for voyage crew (ie ordinary paying crew members) is in six eight-berth cabins, two for each watch. Volunteers are in 2-3 berth cabins and the permanent crew have individual cabins. The accommodation is air-conditioned, because the ship spends a significant amount of time in tropical waters each year.

USS State of Maine in the Evening in Portsmouth Harbour

USS State of Maine in the Evening in Portsmouth Harbour

Originally built as the USNS Tanner for the US Navy as a fast Oceanographic Research Vessel by Bethlehem Steel Corporation at its Sparrows Point Yard in Maryland in 1990. The vessel was the second oceanographic research ship to bear the name of Zero Luther “Tanner” a noted Oceanographer and inventor of a patented sounding machine. The vessel experienced an engine casualty in 1993 and was laid up by the Navy and ownership transferred to the Maritime Administration. She lay idle in the James River Reserve Fleet until 1996 when she began a conversion process, which removed her underwater sonar domes and equipment. The two original engines were removed and a new “one of a kind” power plant was installed, making her into a sophisticated high tech teaching platform for her mission of training men and women for careers as licensed officers in the Merchant Marine. The vessel was modified to increase the accommodations from 108 to 302 persons. New lifesaving equipment and upgrades to existing equipment were accomplished as well as enhancements to the habitability requirements of the vessel. She was delivered to Maine Maritime Academy on 6 June 1997. Today Maine Maritime students in majors leading to a USCG Third Assistant Engineer (Marine Engineering Operations, Marine Engineering Technology, and Marine Systems Engineering majors) or USCG Third Mate (Marine Transportation Operations major) licenses participate in training cruises aboard the TS State of Maine. These cruises last about 60 days on average, and during that time midshipmen will rotate through both class and laboratory training at sea, ship's operations including deck and engine watches, as well as emergency drills. Port visits offer a time to relax, and visit other maritime nations, but also include watch responsibilities and routine ship's maintenance.

Cozumel, Flamingo Dance

Have you ever seen the second Fantasia movie? There was one song with flamingos in it, and they all did the same thing, except for one who was into playing with a yoyo. Anyway, I didn't really get it until I observed actual flamingos for an extended time. They are just like that. One Flamingo seems to be the alpha male (or female) and whatever it does, the rest follow. That explains how they ended up in the hotel lobby. (next photo)

Hit explore , Oct.
Thanks all
From the other side of the city, you could catch the other side of the city sky-line.
Almost to the dark night, probably some time after the sun set , the sky is not totally dark yet.

Could see the light is still on , as people here usually work late.

Cityscape at different perspective, from Singapore river.
Another favourite spot to take photo.
Night Shoot, long exposure with tripod. some weekend ago

This is actually the "centre " of the Singapore River, at this hour, some office worker are still around in the work place. Visitor could take a stroll along the river, or have some seafood dinner nearby. A good chill-out place will be further down-stream, at the clark-quay, where you could find some faourite night-spot. And even a Bungy jump Station for the daring one.
A common activity will be a bumboat ride along the river, there are a few stand to hop in for a small fee.
Or make a ealrly turn to the Orchard road where all the shopping is, if time is not too late.
A few good musuem is nearby if you have more hours to spare interested in some history and arts
...just some intro and info on hometown...some go around about tips...

City Hotel, Santiago, Chile.

This is the first of a series of pictures about buildings that I'm doing. The idea is to show the contrast between some constructions here in Santiago: Old vs new. The whole process was manual and it was harder than I expected, but the final result it's pretty acceptable i tink. I tried to keep the sky as white as possible because this gives an affect of decontextualization of the building. You can see more clearly this in the others pictures that i'm gonna upload where some buildings seem to be part of Sin City. Let me know what do you think.

Warwick Hotel New York

Warwick Hotel New York

Warwick Hotel New York
65 West 54th Street (at Avenue of the Americas)
New York, NY 10019

The Warwick's signature piece - the entrance marquee.

--------
It is not the Hearst Castle, but the Warwick shares ties with William Randolph Hearst’s San Simeon, California showpiece. The newspaper tycoon built both in the 1920s. Like Hearst Castle, the Warwick courted movie stars. Hearst built The Warwick as an apartment hotel for his Hollywood and theatrical friends, with a penthouse for his mistress, the starlet Marion Davies. The cost was $5 million.

The Warwick’s architect was Emery Roth who along with Thomas Hastings designed the Ritz Tower, an apartment hotel at 57th and Park Avenue. Emory Roth also designed the Hotel Belleclaire and Benjamin Hotel and the ornate, eclectic apartment/hotels San Remo and St. Moritz.

Roth adorned the 36-story brick tower with arched windows near the top and cascading setbacks. Roth purposely designed a small lobby for the Warwick. The modest size was intended to maintain a residential feel and limit access to press and spectators.

The Warwick was built across the street from the Ziegfeld Theatre, built by Broadway producer Florenz Ziegfeld. William Hearst financed the theater and he took control of the theater after Ziegfeld’s death in 1932. Movie stars followed, among them Cary Grant, who kept a terrace apartment at the Warwick for 12 years. The Beatles gave a press conference at the Warwick while staying there prior to their legendary August 15, 1965 Shea Stadium performance.

Richard Chiu, a Hong Kong-born businessman, purchased the Warwick Hotel in 1980. He subsequently named his company after the hotel – Warwick International Hotels. WIH is a privately owned company. Warwick Hotels has over 50 hotels worldwide of which 17 are wholly owned.

With 31 years of ownership Chiu’s company has provided the Warwick with major renovations most recently in 2001 and 2006.

Designer Pierre Court (the Plaza Athenee, Paris; the Palace and Villard Bar in New York) restored the public spaces.

Murals on 54 is Warwick New York Hotel's refurbished dining room. Pierre Court, who also redesigned the New York Palace, Villard Bar, Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris, spearheaded the refurbishment of the restaurant.

Pierre Court’s work accentuated the room’s historic murals painted by Dean Cornwell, known as the 'Dean of American Illustrators'.

According to the Warwick Hotel the history of the murals dates back to 1937, when William Randolph Hearst commissioned Dean Cornwell to paint murals in the hotel’s dining room, The Raleigh Room. Cornwell completed the murals in 1938. The breathtaking murals depict Sir Walter Raleigh receiving his charter from the Queen in 1584 and Raleigh landing at Roanoke Island. A payment dispute between Cornwell and Hearst resulted in Cornwell painting obscene images on the murals. One large mural was covered for more than 40 years. These murals, now completely restored, have received so much attention, in fact, that The Museum of Modern Art approached the hotel about purchasing them for $100,000 several years ago, but the hotel owner declined their offer.

Today the 33-story hotel has 359 guest rooms and 67 suites.
