Fence, Field & Ocean Sounds like a law firm, hahaha! This was taken in San Francisco, close to Ocean Beach but I can't remember the name of the place... Finally Friday, we had a Code Red drill in school yesterday that sucked the life out me! Imagine 50 Kindergarteners hiding in a small closet for 50 minutes... Happy weekend and a Happy Fence Friday to everyone too! Beale, Davis, Market & Pine The title rather sounds like a law firm. In fact, it's just the four streets that intersect near the Embarcadero in San Francisco. I got on the ground to take this so I could get the exaggerated vertical perspective. Using my ultra-wide lens also helped. Ben Lawers Ben Lawers 22.08.09 Meaning - Hill of the loud stream Altitude - 1214 metres (3982 feet) Grid Ref. - NN63554142 Ben Lawers is the highest peak of a long ridge formed by six peaks, five over 3000ft. Ben Lawers was long thought to be over 4,000 ft in height; accurate measurement in the 1870s showed it to be some 17 ft short of this figure. In 1878, a group of twenty men spent a day building a large cairn in the hope of bringing the summit above the "magic" figure. The cairn is no longer there; in any case the Ordnance Survey ignored it as an artificial structure that was not truly part of the hill. This mountain is composed of four ridges, mostly grass with some rocky outcrops but the slopes between the S and W ridge are steep crumbling cliffs on which some of Britain's most beautiful alpine flowers grow. The short W ridge connecting to Beinn Ghlas and the longer N ridge to An Stuc are the normal ascent routes for Ben Lawers, although a direct ascent from Lochan nan Cat to the S is possible. The most common ascent via Beinn Ghlas is a wide badly eroded path. Yes, I'm a Bad American Stolen from e-mail I Am the Liberal-Progressives Worst Nightmare. I am an American. I am a Master Mason and believe in God. I ride Harley Davidson Motorcycles and believe in American products. I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some Liberal governmental functionary be it Democratic or Republican! I'm in touch with my feelings and I like it that way! I think owning a gun doesn't make you a killer, it makes you a smart American. I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and does not entitle you to anything. Get over it! I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac, do it in English. I believe everyone has a right to pray to his or her God when and where they want to. My heroes are John Wayne, Babe Ruth, Roy Rogers, and Willie G. Davidson that makes the awesome Harley Davidson Motorcycles. I don't hate the rich. I don't pity the poor. I know wrestling is fake and I don't waste my time watching or arguing about it. I've never owned a slave, or was a slave, I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks and neither have you! So, shut up already. I believe if you don't like the way things are here, go back to where you came from and change your own country! This is AMERICA We like it the way it is! If you were born here and don't like it you are free to move to any Socialist country that will have you. I want to know which church is it exactly where the Reverend Jesse Jackson preaches, where he gets his money, and why he is always part of the problem and not the solution. Can I get an AMEN on that one? I also think the cops have the right to pull you over if you're breaking the law, regardless of what color you are. And, no, I don't mind having my face shown on my drivers license. I think it's good.... And I'm proud that 'God' is written on my money. I think if you are too stupid to know how a ballot works, I don't want you deciding who should be running the most powerful nation in the world for the next four years. I dislike those people standing in the intersections trying to sell me stuff or trying to guilt me into making 'donations' to their cause. Get a Job and do your part! I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child, it takes two parents. I believe 'illegal' is illegal no matter what the lawyers think. I believe the American flag should be the only one allowed in AMERICA ! If this makes me a BAD American, then yes, I'm a BAD American. If you are a BAD American too, please forward this to everyone you know. We want our country back! Okay, I shared on Flickr basically what my political position is, thanks dude! "Literary Roost: To Kill a Mockingbird" a Mockingbird oil painting by Camille Engel Title: Literary Roost: To Kill a Mockingbird Artist: Camille Engel Size: 20 x 16 inches Medium: Oil on Linen Camille Engel is typically known as a still life contemporary realist artist. This realism oil painting is a Male Mockingbird and books bird painting. To Kill a Mockingbird is my latest painting in the "Literary Roost" series. A Male Mockingbird is perched on the "evidence" in a stack of law books. An attorney in Austin, TX commissioned this painting. (For historical purposes... this is my first painting on linen.) This Literary Roost series of paintings is inspired by and dedicated to my daughter, Audry Camille Engel-Beckett, an avid reader and aspiring Opera Singer. Judge Harry N. Graves Born April 4, 1877 in La Vernia (Wilson County), Harry Graves attended Southwestern University in Georgetown and later served three terms as city attorney. He aided the prosecution in a landmark trial against the Ku Klux Klan, 1923-24 (he lived at this site at the time). District attorney and future governor Dan Moody led the team. In 1929, voters elected Graves to the Texas house of representatives, where in 1930 he wrote the bill establishing the Texas highway patrol. In 1937, he became a judge on the Texas court of criminal appeals. Graves died in 1957 and was buried in the State Cemetery, Austin, leaving a legacy of civil rights and public safety for Texas. Justice Todd house... Former home of US Supreme Court Justice Thomas Todd. Built in 1812 and purchased from the builder, believed to be either Hayden Edwards or William Walker, in 1818. The original house did not have the Victorian look visible today. It was a Federal style bldg without gables, gingerbread, or the covered front porch. These were added later. In 1945 the Good Shepherd Church bought the house at auction and it became a convent for the Sisters of Charity. 40 years later Don and Toni Wood bought the property and donated it to the First United Methodist Church. It now houses church offices, a minister's study, a library, classrooms and dining room. The bricks used in 1812 were hand made and placed on the ground to dry in the sun. On some bricks you can see prints of goats and chickens that walked across them while drying. The ash floors on the first level are original, as is the plaster which contains hog hair bristles and horsehair commonly used in the 1800s to bond plaster together. The two two-story wings were added over 100 years ago. The front door, fanlight, and the door lock are original, as is the stairway with cherry banister in the entry hall. The chimney system is unique in that the parlor fireplace shares a flue with fireplaces in the dining room and the second floor. At each end of the house, flues from the first floor fireplaces run vertically, then make right angle turns toward each other and join the flue of the fireplace upstairs. Justice Todd was born in 1765 in King and Queen County, Virginia. He fought in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, then he studied law and surveying. When KY held its conventions seeking separation from Virginia, Todd was selected as the secretary. Kentucky attained statehood in 1792 and Todd was appointed Clerk of the Court of Appeals, the first to hold that office. In 1806 he became Chief Justice and was later appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Thomas Jefferson. After his wife Elizabeth Harris died, in 1811 he married Mrs. Lucy Payne Washington, the sister of celebrated Dolly Madison, wife of President James Madison. Their marriage took place in the East Room of the White House, the first celebrated in the Presidential Mansion. Lafayette met with Mrs. Todd here on his famous tour of the US in 1825. Thomas Todd died February 7, 1826 and was buried in a family graveyard of his mentor and friend Henry Innis. Todd and his wife were re interred later in the Frankfort Cemetery. Kentucky's first native born governor, James T. Morehead, and his wife, lived here with Mrs. Todd after her husband's death. Morehead was born in 1797, just 5 years after KY became a state. Chocolate raid (12/30) My love of chocolate has always been a source of amusement to my friends and family. In the mid-1980s I spent a year as law clerk/bailiff for a state district court judge in Utah -- the heart of Mormondom -- and while thus employed, part of my daily ritual was to buy a pint of Hershey's chocolate milk at the snack bar in the courthouse. One day a couple of colleagues teased me about it, and I responded by affirming that Hershey's was the one true brand of chocolate milk; that all other brands were apostate versions; and that Hershey's had been miraculously restored to the earth in these latter days. More recently, and up to and including the present, Commissioner Myra Harris of the Maricopa County Superior Court always maintains a stash of chocolate of one kind or another for the benefit of her co-workers. I show up almost daily for what I call "chocolate raids." One of her clerks tells me that she knows by the way I walk if I am there on official business, or for the chocolate. According to her, I stroll into the Commissioner's chambers with brisk purposefulness if the visit is related to court business, but at a much more leisurely pace if I am conducting a chocolate raid. The same clerk who made that comment took this picture at my request. The Commissioner wasn't in on the day I made this particular raid, but she wouldn't have raised any objection if she had been there. I like to tell people that as long as I have my chocolate, I am the sweetest fellow they will ever meet in this life; but that contrariwise, without my chocolate I become a savage beast, something worthy of Dante's Inferno. Nobody seems to take this claim very seriously, however. Here I am admiring a handful of Hershey's chocolate kisses, which I very much enjoy, although much as I love chocolate, I prefer the other kind of kisses. Which, in turn, is why I shave extra close every morning; I figure it makes my face more kissable. Grant's Tomb Sited south of Harlem and west of Morningside Heights and Columbia University is the tomb of Ulysses S. Grant. (b. 1822 Point Pleasant, Ohio – d. Mt. McGregor, New York, 1885) The tomb is a fitting memorial to a great American general and president. John Hemenway Duncan designed the tomb, beginning in 1897. Grant had requested that he be buried in St. Louis, Galena, IL, or New York City, rather than Washington DC. The monument was never really finished. The granite for the exterior is from Maine and was quarried by the New Hampshire Granite Company. Grant's Tomb is now run by the U.S. Park Service. The monument, like President Grant himself, has had its share of controversy. Ulysses S. Grant (b. 1822 Point Pleasant, Ohio – d. Mount McGregor, NY 1885) won the Civil War as the commander of the Union Army and served as President of the United States. He was the son of a tanner. Grant went to West Point against his will and graduated in the middle of his class. In the Mexican War, he fought under General Zachary Taylor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant was working in his father's leather store in Galena, Illinois. He was appointed by the Governor to command an undisciplined volunteer regiment. In the Civil War at Shiloh, Grant fought a bloody battle and did poorly. President Lincoln deflected demands for Grant's removal by saying, 'I can't spare this man — he fights.' For his next engagement, Grant fought and won the key city on the Mississippi — Vicksburg. His victory cut the Confederacy in two. Then he broke the Confederate hold on Chattanooga. Lincoln appointed him General-in-Chief in March 1864. Grant directed Sherman to drive through the South while he, with the Army of the Potomac, pinned down General Robert E. Lee's Army. On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Lee surrendered. Grant wrote out generous terms of surrender that would prevent treason trials. As President, Grant brought part of his Army staff to the White House. Grant was honest, but his administration was corrupt. There were federal patronage scandals in New York's Customs House. His brother-in-law was involved with speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk, who attempted to corner the gold market. Grant's administration had a reputation for criminality. Grant drank heavily, as always. In his 1872 reelection campaign, Grant was attacked by liberal Republican reformers. He called them 'narrow-headed men,' their eyes so close together that 'they can look out of the same gimlet hole without winking.' Grant's friends in the Republican Party came to be known as 'the Old Guard.' Grant allowed the bitterly resented Radical Reconstruction to run its course in the South. He backed it up with military force when necessary. It was a disorganized mess. He achieved success when he established Yellowstone National Park. In retirement, Grant invested in a Wall Street financial firm, run in part run by his son, which went famously and scandalously bankrupt. Grant was financially wiped out. Desperate for money, he wrote his memoirs, which earned his family the then astronomical sum of $450,000, but he died of cancer just days after finishing them. His tomb is a national monument in New York City. Winchester Guildhall, Hampshire Winchester Guildhall is on the site of an estate granted by Alfred the Great to his wife Ealswith probably as a coronation gift in ad 871. After his death she retired there and founded a nunnery known as Nunnaminster. Known in the later medieval ages as St. Mary's Abbey, it was one of the foremost nunneries in England. In 1539 Henry VIII dissolved the abbey and the site passed to the crown. The land came into the city's hands to help defray its costs for hosting the wedding Mary Tudor and Philip of Spain in Winchester Cathedral in 1554. Winchester's earliest guildhall was located next to the Butter Cross in a small chamber above the passageway leading from the High Street to the cathedral. In 1712 it occupied the upper chamber of the Old Market House on the High Street, while the ground floor served as a covered market. The expansion of civic responsibilities following the Local Reform Act of 1835 markedly changed the role of guildhalls and Winchester needed a newer and larger building. The Hastings architectural firm Jeffrey and Skiller submitted a design in the Gothic revival style. On 22nd December 1871 Viscount Eversley laid the foundation stone and in May 1873 Lord Selborne opened the new Guildhall. The total cost of construction was ?16,000. The Guildhall was part of a larger complex, housing the law courts, police station and fire brigade. The greater part was given over to civic roles including council meetings, mayor making ceremonies, the mayor's leaving banquet, and the mayor's charity events. For a building of Gothic revival design, the Guildhall facade is relatively uncluttered. Its decoration includes four statues of kings and bishops with Winchester connections. Placed in the arches above the principle windows are sculpted panels showing events reflecting the ancient dignity of the mayor and major events in the city's history. In pride of place is the central panel below the clock tower that shows Florence de Lunne, Winchester's 1st mayor, receiving the city's charter from King Henry II. Paradise Valley Truck Accident On the N3 Durban bound just past Paradise Valley Bridge in the emergency and left hand lane of the freeway, a collision occurred where two trucks and two light motor vehicles had slammed into one another causing most of the freeway to be closed to traffic. ER24 Discovery Medicopter Ground Support Unit was the first to arrive on the scene had to do protective parking as motorist that were travelling on the N3 toward Durban were unable to see the debris that was lying across the freeway because of poor visibility. When paramedics got closer to the vehicles, they found an articulated truck; a delivery truck and two vehicles had been involved in the collision. The delivery truck had been sheared in half by the articulated truck and had come to rest up on the embankment. The two vehicles were found just in front of the articulated truck. With an impact like this paramedics feared the worse but their minds were quickly put to rest when everybody on the scene was miraculously unharmed. The necessary authorities were on the scene and had to close off the freeway for a short period until the scene was cleared. It is believed that the delivery vehicle was travelling on the M13 and had just taken the glide off on to N3, when the driver allegedly lost control of the truck, went through the Armco barrier and down the embankment and landed on the N3 on its side. The driver had already climbed out and just in the nick of time because moments later the articulated truck that was already on the N3 slammed into vehicle which could not be seen due to poor visibility on the road. The two vehicles at the time were travelling pass the truck when the secondary accident occurred. Paramedics are just gratefully that no one was hurt in the accident.
