Producer-director Moustapha Akkad made a true labor of love out of The Message, which seeks nothing less than to tell the story of the origins of Islam. Originally released in the U.S. as Mohammad, Messenger of God, the film has the appeal of most biblical epics: persecuted true believers, a revolutionary prophet scorned by the powers-that-be, and the miraculous triumph of faith. It also has the cheesiness of many biblical epics, with nose-flaring performances and awkward dialogue, but the whole mish-mash is generally entertaining (and informative for those unversed in the "origin stories" of Islam). Akkad had one major hurdle; he couldn't portray the person or voice of Mohammad himself, as such things are traditionally forbidden in Islam. To say the least, this presents an interesting narrative challenge. Akkad tackles it by having characters address the camera-as-Mohammad, or having disciples step out of Mohammad's tent to repeat what the prophet has just said. It's a weird device, but the surprising thing is how often you forget about it. Akkad is aided by some topnotch technicians, including cameraman Jack Hildyard (The Bridge on the River Kwai) and composer Maurice Jarre (whose score was Oscar-nominated); Anthony Quinn, Irene Papas, and Michael Ansara lead the cast.
Also included in the two-disc set is the Arabic-language version of the film, which was shot at the same time with different actors. (It comes without English subtitles.) It runs about 20 minutes longer than the English version; Akkad explains, in a helpful 44-minute making-of documentary, that Arab styles of storytelling (including pacing) and acting are quite different than in the West. Akkad would also make Lion of the Desert and executive-produce the Halloween pictures. He died in the November 2005 terrorist bombings in Jordan. --Robert Horton

This is where you upload the document you wish to publish or print. You would expect this page to contain information about Lulu.com's file format requirements but there's nothing here, other than to say they accept PDF files and other types. I therefore came to the conclusion that the file I wished to upload (in PDF format) was fine.

It can be seen that my document uploaded successfully. However, the print size I selected on the previous page didn't match the document so I went back a step and corrected this before moving forward.

Despite the system indicating that the file had uploaded successfully, Lulu.com's customer service team later advised me, 'I'm afraid that Mac Quartz is a program used to create PDF files optimum for online viewing - however, it does not optimize files for digital printing. That leads to the problem which caused the printing issue: when creating a PDF file in Mac Quartz, it embeds the fonts multiple times in the PDF file. Lulu requires that all fonts be embedded once in the PDF, as multiple embeddings can cause printing problems such as the one in the book you have recieved. Apart from that, there are a few images on pages 1 and 98 which are set to 88 and 96 dpi - I'm afraid lulu requires all images be set to 300 dpi. Finally, there are transparencies in the PDF, which goes against lulu's requirement for all layers to be flattened before uploading.'

If these 'errors' were as critical as Lulu.com claim, why are they not indicated here? Why do Lulu.com not advise customers of the specific file requirements on this page? As Nielsen Norman Group, authors of the report I was trying to print say, 'This report prints fine on any regular PC or Mac printer'. Given this fact, shouldn't a specialist printer be able to cope with the file?

File format error

this is what happens when you open a file that is still on your camera, edit it in adobe photoshop and then save it back on your camera then reopen it. It's all screwed up but i think it's very complex.

After the box-office success of Phenomenon, John Travolta continued to charm audiences with this 1996 comedy-fantasy in which he plays a grubby angel who's got one last good deed to do before heading back to heaven. Living peacefully in the rural Iowa home of an old, friendly motel owner (Jean Stapleton), the winged Michael (Travolta) is hardly the image of a perfect angel. He's scruffy, unshaven, eats sweetened cereal by the box-full and chain-smokes all day long. But when tabloid reporters (William Hurt, Robert Pastorelli) learn of Michael's alleged existence and head to Iowa to check him out, Michael soon realizes that it's his task to see that Hurt falls in love with an "angel expert" (Andie MacDowell) and breaks free from his habitually cynical attitude. There's more to the story, of course (and Chasing Amy fans will recognize Joey Lauren Adams as a waitress who charms the angel), but Michael is more about the effect that this enchanting angel has on the earthbound humans around him. Whether he's chipping away at Hurt's skepticism or attracting a crowd of women on a truck-stop dance floor, Michael is an enchanting figure, and Travolta plays him with just the right tone of humor, reverence, and effervescent charm. Sure, it's lightweight fluff, but director Nora Ephron specializes in lightweight fluff, and Michael is the kind of feel-good movie that never wears out its welcome. --Jeff Shannon

Screaming Alien Goat Face on Nevada Desert

Whilst flying over the Nevada desert recently, I glanced out my window and noticed this. It's funny, because I was just returning home from TAM8 (The Amazing Meeting) in Las Vegas, wherein one of the speakers at the conference was discussing his research on how pareidolia affects our perception of things. When I look at this picture, I see a screaming goat-headed fellow. Pareidolia is a fascinating psychological phenomenon.

Note: I tried finding this location on Google Earth, but it's like searching for a needle in a haystack.

In the waning months of the 20th century, legendary Seattle band Screaming Trees went back into the studio one last time. Having been released from their label and realizing that the outlook was grim, the Trees entered Stone Gossard's Studio Litho to preserve the last batch of songs the band had written. Financed by the band and produced by drummer Barrett Martin, these sessions proved to be their last. Twelve years later, in the winter of 2011, Martin and long-time friend and producer Jack Endino found the two-inch multi-track reels, carefully baked and cleaned the tapes, transferred them to a digital format, and brought those final 10 songs back to life. To their pleasant surprise, the music had a raw, energetic quality, with the band cracking jokes and howling with laughter between takes - they were clearly having a good time. These final sessions were a remarkable last testament to the band's impressive 15-year career.

"Peep Beep" was a small performance that emerged from the ashes of the Dialtones Telesymphony. Essentially we performed an improvised mix of the ringtone material live on a dozen amplified phones. Ten phones were loaded with about 20 custom ringtone melodies/noises each; these 200 or so sounds were used as the sole sonic material for a 12-minute performance. Here, Greg Shakar and I perform at the 2002 Sonar Festival.
