Trumpet 3

Trumpet 3

It took some finageling to hold the trumpet in my right hand while holding and taking the picture with my left hand. The note played with the first valve down could be F, Bb, or D (among others), depending on your embouchure or lip position/tension, but my first instinct is to see this as F.

Let's not forget that ecosystems provide an important 'provisioning service' (P) in providing the wood to design the musical instruments which creates the sounds that bring a lot of good vibes to our lives. So naturally, there is an added cultural service (C) here: this guitar provides the foundation for the songwriter (i.e. Xavier Rudd) to inspire others with his music. And in this case, you also have the nature('land')-inspired Aboriginal art giving the instrument a sacred touch...

No, he is not somking.
The various Indigenous Australian communities developed unique musical instruments and folk styles. The didgeridoo, which is widely thought to be a stereotypical instrument of Aboriginal people, was traditionally played by people of only the eastern Kimberley region and Arnhem Land (such as the Yolngu), and then by only the men. Clapping sticks are probably the more ubiquitous musical instrument, especially because they help maintain rhythm for songs.

1968 (age 25) July 10th & 11th > my Miracle tour > Liverpool Cathedral

1968 (age 25) July 10th & 11th > my Miracle tour > Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on the following Wednesday 10th July is the first performance I clearly remember - firstly because it was, according to my diary, "FANTASTIC!!!! Indescribably beautiful." and secondly because Doreen Tanner, the drama critic for the Liverpool Echo, who had seen and enjoyed our production of The Surprise of Love #2 at the Everyman Theatre, came to the first night (we did it twice at Liverpool) and wrote a good review (see above).

I'm glad she mentioned "effective lighting" since the dress rehearsal had been marred by having insufficient lamps, so Lynn and I spent all day of the first night getting hold of more lamps and positioning them strategically, and working out a lighting scheme - we made a great team!

I appreciated Tanner's comments about the verse translation - in the first place because I had striven to make the verse easy on the ear, and in the second place because Mike Hale and I had spent a lot of rehearsal time in training the actors to avoid the 'doggerel effect' that can occur when actors aren't used to working with a script in rhyming verse.

Tanner's comment about the Cathedral's immensity was meant as a compliment! Since our performances were part of a week-long celebration of the completion of the first 'bay' at the west end, it was fitting that we drew the building itself into the action. But what Tanner doesn't mention is that we weren't all simply watching Mary walk down the aisle for five minutes. During her walk, Theophile was speaking one of his most beautifully lyrical soliloquies - his prayer to Mary - and between each of the four verses a clarinet and violin duo played. It was all timed so that Mary arrived at Theophile's side just as he finished his prayer.

Dean Patey wondered about a revival in the autumn.

Roedelius - Selbstportrait (1980) review

4 Fabelwein 5:05
5 Prinzregent 5:53
6 Kamee 3:59

9 Arcona 5:05
10 Staunem im Fjord 3:33
11 Minne 2:09

Wunderbar. The most criminally neglected solo Roedelius album finally gets a proper CD release.

Selbstportrait was the first of five volumes of Roedelius keyboard vignettes progressively released by Sky Records in the early 1980s, just as Krautrock’s commercial sun dipped below the horizon, not to reappear in the public eye until after Julian Cope’s Krautrocksampler. Even then, Cope overlooked these unassuming quiet self portraits while Sky lazily bunged volumes one and two into a single CD with tracks reshuffled or left out. So hats off to Bureau Buskies editions for faithfully restoring them with the addition of sleeve notes by Asmus Tietchens.

In the early 1980s, these rippling Zen pastorales were as radical for their time as any existential guitar thrash. Pale and fresh, like February flowers pushing out of cracks in asphalt, Roedelius softens Krautrock's industrial strength metronome into a grainy volksmusik all of his own. For trapped within the mechanically tumbling loops of these 18 Farfisa vignettes are sublime melodies with oblique hints of the school piano, Bach, fin-de-siecle organs, harps and accordions.

By boldly juxtaposing Krautrock’s brutalist mantras with classical and folk tradition, Selbstportrait confirms Roedelius among the finest native voices of post-War Germany. Here is a tone poet listening in to his own history and the clamour of voices and well-caught scraps of this and that which blow across his psyche. And the result is hypnotic and life-affirming.

From the moth-eaten brocade of German history, Roedelius extracts ancestral voices and transposes them into new settings with just a trace of the original left over. “Kamee” detunes his Farfisa to slightly off-key but chromatic settings so that his tumbling loops circle around ambiguous tonal centres delighting the ear with their timbral strangeness. For a minute it hovers between rhythm and pulse – seemingly undeveloped and unchanging, Cluster-like – inviting the question: “What’s the point of this?” The music seems hermetically sealed in its own space. Divorced from centuries of tradition. It seems to lack any linear harmonic structure where things develop, peak and resolve in some kind of way. But with the deep listening that Roedelius fans bring to his work, slowly and intermittently, an inner complexity opens out. Shifting from major to minor and back, muted colours fade in and out, like a quivering Rothko canvas. And, what’s that? It sounds like a hurdy-gurdy spooking the modernist repetitions.

It’s dance music for the head. Taking off from the odd and unfamiliar while interleaving it with oblique melodic nods to the past. Within a rigid gridlock of pattering tik-tak of keyboard drums, “Arcona” evokes the quirky syrupy melodies of Paul Hindemath’s Gebrauchsmusik. The analogue synth plinky-plonk of “Inselmoos” is pure plastic and fibreglass delight until a woozy melody opens a wormhole to Alpline folklore.

The composite effect of these 240-volt pastorales is exquisite. Like music for a hilltop view of patchwork fields, woods and streams that takes in asphalt, pylons, a nuclear power station. Past and present, urban and rural, inner and outer space neatly folding into each other.

In the original vinyl sleeve notes, Roedelius felt compelled to apologise for the lo-fi quality of these home-made tapes using a Revox reel-to-reel. He needn’t have bothered. Their 240-volt hiss and grainy resolution is equally suggestive of buzzing electronics or bacterial growth – and so applies the perfect finish to the album.

And now to pay tribute to the greatest pop album of all time ...

Heroin-fueled addiction and chemistry rife with turmoil between singer Brett Anderson and guitarist Bernard Butler led to an unparalleled album of tragic, dark and painful songs that are at times classical - The 2 Of Us and Still Life - gritty and noisy - This Hollywood Life and We Are The Pigs - beautiful - The Wild Ones - political - The Power - mesmerizing - Heroine - and epic - The Asphalt World. Anderson's drugged baritone singing soars to unfathomable heights. Butler's layers upon layers of overdubbed guitars pile on so thick the weight comes painfully close at times to collapsing the entire thread of the music but never does, and reaches epic proportions on the enormous cadenza of The Asphalt World before being joined by Anderson's powerful vocals ending in an explosion of sound and samples evoking a proper drug addict's and distraught lover's delusions.

Grandiose and at times seemingly over-the-top, the production afforded by Ed Buller was a major factor in the demise of the Anderson/Butler songwriting team that would then spell the end of this era of Suede. But he produced this album expertly, never too overworked or overdone. Guitar fuzz leads to classical piano strains leads to full-blown orchestral arrangements and within all he handled with absolute integrity.

The album art of a nude figure collapsed on a bed that, in Suede fashion is left ambiguous but that we can only assume is a man, symbolizes the tragic nature of the album, that or a personification of the ending of the last song Still Life from its enormous symphonic power that collapses in on itself with a final crash of cymbals and percussion and brings with it a close to the all-too-short era that was Suede with the Anderson/Butler force.

One reviewer mentioned "this album is best heard through headphones on a system turned up to a level not entirely healthy for one's ears. Even if you do go deaf as a result, chances are there's nothing much worth listening to after having sat through Suede's sophomore set." I can personally attest to blowing a pair of headphones whilst listening to The Asphalt World.

The entire album is one drug-induced frenzy. Tragically beautiful and heroic. Mesmerizing and larger-than-life. There are not enough superlatives to aptly describe this work of pure pop art, coming dangerously close to breaking out of kitsch, and symbolizing both the epitome and the demise of Brit Pop and the entire era, ushering in after it a new sound infused more with polished glam and less of the earlier disenchantment and tragic ideals. It represents the culmination of an era that has now been written into pop culture history, an era noted for its dark glam and obscene stylings that will always be Brit Pop.

and other such musings ... I digress

Karen gets very angry at me if I even breathe when she's playing Guitar Hero. Here's an common "conversation" we'll have while she's playing:

Me: Ok, so make sure you hit all the Star Power phrases.
Karen: I have my own style, don't tell me how to play.

Me: Oh, wow, you nailed that phrase.
Karen: Shh!

Me: Oh man, you almost had that.
Karen: Ugh, you messed me up!

Still, I've watched almost all of her performances.

Race Classification under South African Apartheid

"Racial classification was the foundation of all apartheid laws. It placed individuals in one of four groups: African, described as 'Bantu' in apartheid laws, 'coloured', 'Asian' or 'white'. To illustrate the everyday reality, visitors are arbitrarily classified as either white or non-white. You will only be permitted to enter through the gate allocated to your race group. Identity documents, like those which you see on both sides of the corridor, were the main tools used to implement this racial divide."

The Saxophone

The Saxophone

Wednesday, (2/24/10)
Any time I want to chill, I go into our family office and play my tenor saxophone. I learned to play this lovely instrument 3 years ago when I was a sophomore in high school. The reason I learned to play the sax was because I wanted to play in the marching band the following fall. Over the years, I have played in two marching band shows, West Side Story and La Nouba, four concert band shows, as well as one jazz ensemble concert. My favorite type of music to play is jazz. Although I am still learning, I have become quite successful at playing songs such as, I Feel Good by James Brown and Free Ride by Edgar Winter. These songs are a lot of fun and allow me to get a little funky. I love playing the tenor saxophone and hope to join a small group in college, where I can continue to perform for people.

My oldest Coltrane LP - but heard him a lot before that. Furious, fantastic, ecstatic... It took a while until I really learned to like it - quite difficult (and I was quite young in those days, 19 and listened more Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton... - it's still quite ruff and very strong....
My favourite here is the slow, peaceful and meditative Attaining.

Just Because Your Star Shines Bright, Doesn't Mean My Star Doesn't Shine

I don't normally photograph people, but something about this gentleman playing the saxophone for money in front of Fishbone's in Greektown inspired me. Instantly the line by Billy Bragg ( "Just because you're better than me, doesn't mean I'm lazy" ) popped in my head. So many people walked by him, without even giving him a second glance ( or any loose change ) . He was trying everything, impressive scales, the theme to Sanford and Son, etc. There was a chill in the air and people just ignored him to get to the casino quicker. It made me realize how quickly we can make a judgement about someone. For all you know, he could be going to Wayne State University to complete his doctorate and just wanted to make some extra money. All we are saying, is give people a chance....

A pleasant place to compose music

A pleasant place to compose music

I've struggled for some time to create a place to compose music in my tiny home; limited space and budget have made it a challenge. I think the result is quite nice, however. The key thought was to prioritize activities and do the simplest possible thing to achieve activity level. Here were my top musical priorities:

1. Just make music. This meant connecting speakers (Yamaha) to the keyboard (Roland SD-700SX). 2 1/4" patch cables, 3 ordinary power cables, and a small plug multiplier. Easy.

2. Record MIDI. This meant adding a computer to the mix (Thinkpad X41 Tablet P-M 1.5GHz 1.5G RAM named "Quirky") , installing software (Ableton Live 7), and attaching the keyboard to the computer (via USB). Worked great.. However once I plugged the laptop into wall power the speakers got very noisy. This was because of a cheaply constructed third-party power supply - by replacing it with the official Thinkpad power supply the noise disappeared. (This would have been difficult to diagnose if I had put everything together all at once, I think.) One small innovation: flipping the screen around but keeping it at an angle, to serve as a kind of touchscreen music stand; reminds me of the Korg OASYS.

3. Record audio. This took some experimentation to get right. I felt compelled to test the tablet's native sound abilities even though I was pretty sure it wouldn't sound good. The tablet has a "mic in" which, sure enough, testing showed it to be of very poor quality for accepting audio from the keyboard (primarily a strange warble). So I purchased an MBox (M-Audio Fast Track Pro) and attached it to the computer (USB), and connected the keyboard (2 XLR cables). Now it sounds very good. I was glad to see that a modest computer can do well at audio. I thought it would.

4. Playing virtual instruments. Now I was getting frisky - it was straightforward to get this working (just have to setup MIDI correctly and remember to 'arm' recording in Live). However at this stage I decided to "break" the solution to #2 by removing the direct keyboard USB/MIDI and using the MBox for MIDI. Required 2 MIDI cables and eliminated 1 USB cable. The benefit is that the tablet has fewer cables going into it.

5. Applying virtual effects. Again, works well and sounds great. Surprisingly low latency (I can just barely hear it).

6. Monitoring PC audio. Headphones in the MBox work great. Using speakers turned out to be surprisingly complicated. First, I was loath to abandon the simple solution to #1. I realized that if I plugged the speakers into the MBox I wouldn't be able to "just play" without a computer attached, which from experience I know I don't like being tethered to a PC to make music. Luckily the MBox can be powered separately, although it required the purchase of a wall wart. I also needed a couple of extra cables (XLR) - easily fixed (I do wish the MBox had 1/4" inputs as well as XLR inputs, though). One other annoyance: the MBox pops, badly, when it's turned off with speakers still attached. This is not as much of an issue when the MBox is seperately powered, as unplugging the computer no longer causes the MBox to power down. (Essentially it turns out the MBox is serving as a simple line mixer for keyboard and pc audio.)

For a finishing touch, I draped the (semi soft) travel case over and behind the keyboard. This is not only a great place to store a very bulky item, but it also serves to cushion the tablet and protect the keyboard. I also plugged everything into a power strip so the whole shebang can be turned on and off with one switch (which saves power and avoids pops). I sort of miss using the Roland's power switch, though - it's a really nice switch. Very wide and solid and with a pleasant curve to it.

I actually believe there is a market for a simple standalone MIDI sequencer, even if this solution works for me. To have a small hand-held device that I could attach to the keyboard, play into, then take to a computer for editing might be quite nice, especially if you are prone to long solo jamming, like I am.

Mermaid Morrigam Make Marvelous Music

At the Poplar grove Plantation Wednesday market we were entertained by Mermaid Morrigan (aka Cindy Rhodes) and her hammered dulcimer "Persephone". Every Wednesday morning she will enchant and delight with her ethereal sounds inspired by the waters surrounding Topsail Island, NC.

Cindy performs her original music on "Persephone", an instrument with it's Assyrian/Persian roots from 2000 years ago. The hammered dulcimer was and still IS called a "SANTUR".

Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos presented a proclamation Greenfield Hebrew Academy for entering and winning the Microsoft Bing competition called Our School Needs. They won a grand prize of $100,000. Under the direction of GHA’s music teacher, Ori Salzberg, students posted a rap video entitled “Raising the Roof” on YouTube, which described how their roof leaked when it rained. It has been viewed almost 10,000 times. Realizing their roof would not cost $100,000, the school decided to “pay it forward.” They are donating money to purchase musical instruments for the James M. Singleton Marching Band in New Orleans. Mayor Galambos honored the students of GHA for making a difference in the life of their school and in the lives of others in a school touched by tragedy. Pictured with the Mayor are GHA’s students who performed the rap and GHA’s Head of School Rabbi Lee Buckman and Music Teacher Ori Salzberg.
