The 2009 Report on Punched and Needled Stitch-Bonded Wool Felts and Manmade Fiber Felts Excluding Carpet and Rugs Suitable for Outdoor Use and All Hats: World Market Segmentation by City This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "punched and needled stitch-bonded wool felts and manmade fiber felts excluding carpet and rugs suitable for outdoor use and all hats" for the year 2009. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of Persian culture and art, and dates back to the Bronze Age. The earliest surviving corpus of Persian carpets come from the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736) in the 16th century. However, painted depictions prove a longer history of production. There is much variety among classical Persian carpets of the 16th and 17th century. Common motifs include scrolling vine networks, arabesques, palmettes, cloud bands, medallions, and overlapping geometric compartments rather than animals and humans. This is because Islam, the dominant religion in that part of the world, forbids their depiction. Still, some show figures engaged either in the hunt or feasting scenes. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for punched and needled stitch-bonded wool felts and manmade fiber felts excluding carpet and rugs suitable for outdoor use and all hats. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). Islamic Center of Washington DC Source: Islamic Center web-site The Islamic Center of Washington is a mosque and Islamic cultural center in Washington, D.C., United States. It is located on Embassy Row on Massachusetts Avenue just east of the bridge over Rock Creek. When it opened in 1957 it was the largest Muslim place of worship in the Western Hemisphere. Some 6,000 people attend prayers there each Friday. The center was originally conceived in 1944 when the Turkish ambassador Munir Ertegun died and there was no mosque to hold his funeral in. The Washington diplomatic community played a leading role in the effort to have a mosque constructed. Support came from most of the Islamic nations of the world who donated money, decorations, and craftsmen to the project. Support for the project also came from the American-Muslim community. The site was purchased in 1946 and the corner stone was laid on January 11, 1949. The building was designed by Italian architect Mario Rossi and was dedicated on June 28, 1957 with President Dwight D. Eisenhower in attendance. The main prayer hall of the center is covered by Persian carpets dedicated by the late Shah of Iran. The center continues to be controlled by a board of governors made up of various ambassadors. Around the building are arrayed the flags of the Islamic nations of the world. The mosque has been visited by many high profile dignitaries, including several presidents. The highest profile visit was by President George W. Bush on September 17, 2001 only days after the attacks of September 11. On national television, Bush quoted from the Koran and worked to assure Americans that vast majority of Muslims are peaceful. In addition to the mosque, the center contains a library and classrooms where courses on Islam and the Arabic language are taught ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source: Wikipedia 2008 The 1977 Hanafi Siege refers to an incident that occurred March 9-11, 1977, in which three buildings in Washington, D.C. were seized by 12 gunmen. They were held responsible for taking 149 hostages and the death of two people. After a 39 hour standoff all hostages were released from the District Building (city hall) – now called the John A. Wilson Building, B'nai B'rith headquarters, and the Islamic Center. One of those killed was 24-year-old Maurice Williams, a young radio reporter from WHUR-FM, who stepped off a fifth floor elevator into the crisis. (The fifth floor is where the Mayor and City Council President have their offices). The gunmen also shot DC Protective Service Division, Special Police Officer Mack Cantrell, who died a few days later in the hospital of a heart attack. Then-D.C. council member, later mayor, Marion Barry walked into the hallway of the District Building after hearing a commotion and was hit by a ricocheted shotgun pellet just above his heart. He was taken out a window and rushed to a hospital. The gunmen had several demands. They "wanted the government to hand over a group of men who had been convicted of killing seven relatives – mostly children – of takeover leader Hamaas Khaalis. They also demanded that the movie Mohammad, Messenger of God be destroyed because they considered it sacrilegious." Time magazine noted: "That the toll was not higher was in part a tribute to the primary tactic U.S. law enforcement officials are now using to thwart terrorists—patience. But most of all, perhaps, it was due to the courageous intervention of three Muslim ambassadors, Egypt's Ashraf Ghorbal, Pakistan's Sahabzada Yaqub-Khan and Iran's Ardeshir Zahedi." Causes of the siege The leader of the siege was former national secretary of the Nation of Islam, Hamaas Khaalis. Khaalis was born in Indiana in 1921 and named Ernest McGee. Discharged from the U.S. Army on grounds of mental instability, he worked as a jazz drummer in New York City before converting to Islam and changing his name to Hamaas Khaalis. He became prominent in the ministries and school of the Nation of Islam and was appointed its national secretary in the early 1950's. Khaalis split with the Nation of Islam in 1958 to found a rival orthodox Islamic organisation, the "Hanafi Movement.". In 1968 he was arrested for attempted extortion but released on grounds of mental illness. In 1972 he published an open letter attacking the leadership and beliefs of the Nation of Islam. A year later five men broke into Khaalis' Washington home and murdered five of his children, his nine-day-old grandson and another man. The murderers were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. A grief-stricken Khaalis claimed the men were associated with the Nation of Islam, and that the Jewish judge in the cases had not pursued this link. The takeovers in Washington On 9 March 1977, seven members of Khaalis' group burst into the headquarters of B'nai B'rith, just a few miles south of Khaalis' headquarters, and took over 100 hostages. Dear Cody, dear Sashi, This week I have been busy trying to make our (in future shared) home a bit more comfortable for you. I have bought food bowls, a water dish, dry food, cat litter, a litter box with shovels, and this ceiling-high scratch pole which I assembled from ca. 45 individual parts for you today. It's even bigger than your old one in Madison. And it's got more different things on it. I hope you like it. I want you to know that I'm doing what I can to make this a good home for you. While you were missing Joey for three weeks in June/ July, she was here, helping me with that. She put vinyl flooring in the storage room so that we can set the litter box there (which, by the way, will have walls, so Cody can pee standing without hitting the room wall, and it will also be huge, so that Sashi can turn around easily while being inside). She also helped me with the netting for the balcony which will prevent you from falling off the 4th floor into the street. It will be a change for you. There will be no more stairs for you to climb here, like you have now. I hope the tall scratch pole will make up for that. There will also be no wall-to-wall carpeting. I know that you, Sashi, love to scratch your claws on the carpet - if you need to do that here too, we can get some extra sturdy rug for you to work on. Since your new home is in the city center, we don't have any squirrels for you to watch here. But when you sit by the huge living room window, you can watch the people walking up and down in the street, the bikers, the cars - and, a couple of times a day, there will be a bird, usually a big seagull, a pigeon, or a crow, landing on one of the lampposts outside the window. Sometimes the seagulls also chase each other in the street - and make a lot of noise! I hope that will give you enough entertainment. And then, there's always Joey and me. And I hope that counts a bit, too? The flight which you will have to board soon is not going to be a piece of cake. First there will be a car ride to the airport that will take several hours. Then you will be checked in and end up in complete darkness, in a little box, and there will be roaring engines around you for another couple of hours. You will not have food, and no litter box either (try and hold it, if possible). Maybe it's best if you just go to sleep. Try not to freak out (especially if your name is Cody), since this is only going to make matters worse. When you arrive, I will pick you up and we will go together you to your new home. Think of it as an adventure, because that's exactly what it is. And you can be really proud too: There aren't many cats around who can truthfully say they have lived on two different continents! I got a sudden, weird jolt of nostalgia as I climbed these stairs today at the Adult Learning Center on W. 120th St. While many aspects of the building were different from my elementary school, other parts were eerily similar. For example, these stairs were very much like the ones we had back then. I haven't seen them in years, but I remember that returning as a full-sized person, everything seemed so much smaller! In this place too, stairs that would have seemed quite large to me as a child have "shrank" just like in Alice in Wonderland. ;) I could probably have put out my arms and touched both sides of the stairwell at once! In response to my posting a remark about these stairs online earlier, my cousin Robin wrote: Isn't it weird how that happens. I have vivid memories of stairs and floors from my childhood (including a rug in your grandmother's house, which I always loved). I think it's because when you're less than three feet tall, floors are among the few things that are really within sight and reach. There may really be something to that!
