Motels In Sunshine Coast

    sunshine coast
  • There are several places around the globe that use the name Sunshine Coast. They are collections of coastal towns and/or cities that have banded together, usually for tourist promotional reasons. This list contains only those regions that use the English version of the name.

  • The Sunshine Coast is a region of the southern mainland coast of British Columbia, on the eastern shore of the Strait of Georgia, and just northwest of Greater Vancouver.

    motels
  • A roadside hotel designed primarily for motorists, typically having the rooms arranged in a low building with parking directly outside

  • (motel) a motor hotel

  • A motel is a hotel designed for motorists, and usually has a parking area for motor vehicles. They are common in the United States.

  • The Motels are a New Wave music band from the Los Angeles area best known for "Only the Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer", both of which peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Their song "Total Control" reached #4 on the Australian charts in 1980.

Upper Rogue River

Upper Rogue River

We left the ocean fog at Crescent City, California and soon broke into the blue skies and sunshine on our way from the coastal redwood trees to Crater Lake National Park. We stopped often along the Rogue River. The lower portions had the scent of many dead spawned out salmon.

We took a short hike to what is called the "natural bridge" of the Rogue River. Here the river disappears under basalt for perhaps 100 yards and then comes gushing out to rejoin the original river bed. The vine maple were in full color and this is perhaps my favorite photograph of the entire road trip, so I did not reduce the image size when I uploaded it.

Wednesday 7 October 2009
After a prolonged visit at the Colquille River lighthouse and a walk on the beach we drove on to the Cape Blanco lighthouse. What a spectacular setting it has! The wind was howling, so we took photos, a very short hike along the northern bluffs, ate lunch in the cab or our pickup truck and headed on south along the Oregon Coast.

We had visited two more Oregon lighthouses on this day (bringing our total for the trip to four: Yaquina Head; Heceta Head; Coquille River; and finally Cape Blanco).

South of Port Orford we found our favorite place to camp in the future. We light small snug campsites and this one fit our likes perfectly. It is the Humbug Mountain State Park campground and we noted the nice beach you could walk to from this nice little campground. If ever in the area again, we will plan to camp there.

Another beach stop or two and we arrived in Crescent City, California. We knew we were in California because gas jumped from $2.61 - $2.72 along the Oregon Coast to a crisp $3.29 a gallon. No problem though, the motel we checked into early afternoon, was just right (well priced, clean, roomy and one story where you could park right in front of your room (Curly Redwood Lodge - - Crescent City, California). Nice man working the front desk too.

We unloaded all of our gear in our motel room and took a nice long hot shower, and then we grabbed our cameras and headed for Jedediah Strong Smith Redwoods State Park. Here we hiked the short but lovely loop trail through the Stout Grove of old growth redwood trees. What a beautiful sight they are. Not as massive as the Sequoias but graceful, tall, big, and beautiful.

Two nights camping followed by a night in a motel, works well. We both slept well.

Thursday 8 October 2009
On our way early, we drove out of the ocean fog and into the sunshine, heading for Grants Pass, Oregon. We stopped for a couple short hikes along the upper Rogue River (Natural Bridge hike was a short favorite), and gradually made our way to Crater Lake. Though we had visited the national park before, we had always been in a rush, so it was so nice to take the rim road drive all around the lake and enjoy the views of the lake from different view points. Skiffs of snow had fallen at the higher elevations and another strong wind picked up more and more during our visit.

It was some time around 5 o’clock in the afternoon before we finished our sight seeing at Crater Lake, and pointed the nose of our dependable old pickup truck, north towards home. We had no idea whether we would camp along the way or drive it straight, but once headed for home, the urge to keep going kept us doing just that. We arrived at home just before midnight, tired, happy, and glad to leave the unpacking and organizing for Friday morning

The redwood trees are difficult to "see" in one glance. You must start at their trunks and then shift your gaze ever upward to their sun lit canopies.
