Using night vision goggles, A-10 pilots can conduct their missions during darkness. The Thunderbolt IIs have Night Vision Imaging Systems, or NVIS, goggle compatible single-seat cockpits forward of their wings and a large bubble canopy which provides pilots all-around vision. The pilots are protected by titanium armor that also protects parts of the flight-control system. The redundant primary structural sections allow the aircraft to enjoy better survivability during close air support than did previous aircraft. The aircraft can survive direct hits from armor-piercing and high explosive projectiles up to 23mm. Their self-sealing fuel cells are protected by internal and external foam. Manual systems back up their redundant hydraulic flight-control systems. This permits pilots to fly and land when hydraulic power is lost. The Thunderbolt II can be serviced and operated from bases with limited facilities near battle areas. Many of the aircraft's parts are interchangeable left and right, including the engines, main landing gear and vertical stabilizers. Avionics equipment includes multi-band communications; Global Positioning System and inertial navigations systems; infrared and electronic countermeasures against air-to-air and air-to-surface threats. And, it has a Pave Penny laser spot tracker system; a heads-up display to display flight and weapons delivery information; and a low altitude safety and targeting enhancement system, which provides constantly computed impact and release points for accurate ordnance delivery. There is also a low-altitude autopilot and a ground collision avoidance system. The A-10 is currently undergoing the precision engagement modification, which adds upgraded cockpit displays, moving map, hands on throttle and stick, digital stores management, LITENING and Sniper advanced targeting pod integration, situational awareness data link or SADL, variable message format, or VMF, GPS-guided weapons, and upgraded DC power. Precision engagement modified aircraft are designated as the A-10C. The Thunderbolt II can employ a wide variety of conventional munitions, including general purpose bombs, cluster bomb units, laser guided bombs, joint direct attack munitions or JDAM), wind corrected munitions dispenser or WCMD, AGM-65 Maverick and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, rockets, illumination flares, and the GAU-8/A 30mm cannon, capable of firing 3,900 rounds per minute to defeat a wide variety of targets including tanks. Now he prepares to do what any of us would do after such an awful chore—he wants to wash his hands. But another problem arises: where to put Medusa’s head. A sculpture of the patron saint of both the church and the city of Amsterdam was placed in a niche in the upper section of the gable top. The well-known sculptor Bart van Hove (1850-1914) made the sculpture in 1886. The crossing is articulated by a large octagonal tower with a baroque dome and lantern and crowned by a cross. The basis of the groundplan is the scheme of the classic three-aisled cross-basilica, i.e. a nave, two aisles and a single transept. The choir is located in the usual place, at the end of the nave. In the corners formed by the transept and the nave, two chapels are located, traditionally devoted to Mary and Joseph respectively. Inside the newly renovated church, a 19th century Sauer Organ can be found, on which concerts are given and mass is accompanied.. The church is still a very active parish, which serves the city centre. It boasts 3 choirs, 2 of which sing choral evensongs every saturday at 5pm. Saying goodbye to a grand old lady... Due to the ongoing economic situation, UPS recently retired its DC-8 fleet sooner than anticipated with the last UPS DC-8 flight taking place on May 12. I thought that April 16 was the last time I'd seen the UPS DC-8, but going through my photos tonight I've found a set of shots that would be the last time I'd be seeing UPS's venerable old DC-8s 'round these parts ever. These shots were taken on a gloomy afternoon on April 30 from Founders' Plaza. This particular aircraft is N894UP, built in July 1969 as a DC-8-63CF for charter airline Capitol Airlines. In 1984 she was to have been sold to Evergreen, but the deal fell through and she ultimately ended up with UPS who had her converted to Super Seventy standards with the re-engining to more efficient CFM56 engines. The last information I have she is in open storage at UPS's hub in Louisville.
