Sweetwater - "Elite" 15mm Demolition/Breaching Cannon "Johnny"

Sweetwater -

For the sake of being alive, go to all sizes.

Knock, Knock... Johnny's at your door!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Sweetwater Precision Weapons latest hand-cannon, Johnny.

This odd and thought provoking firearm is the newest addition to SPW's "Elite" line of weapons. This weapon in specific, is not mass produced, nor custom made for any individual. It is a pure experimental (and explosive) new firearm design. Produced only for those with the specific needs for this gun, and with loads of cash. Due to the limited quantity and lack of demand, this speculative weapon features a wide variety of odd looking pieces that serve for different purposes.

Essentially, "Johnny" is a heavy duty, multipurpose rifle that fires a large variety of 15mm ammunition. The weapon fires a standard high velocity projectile with a heavy explosive base, similar to the AA12's FRAG 12 ammunition. This round can pierce 1.5 inches of steel up to 150 meters away, and can safely destroy any personnel hiding behind a barrier, door, or vehicle in a certain diameter. This makes for simple killing at a reasonable range, while still being highly effective. These kind of weapons are being sought after more and more because of there aid on today's modern battlefields. Other ammunition types include; heavy armor piercing, white phosphorus, frag, and anti vehicle. One can make full use of this gun by utilizing each type of ammo for every situation.

In addition, this breaching tool has an immense battering type muzzle, absolutely perfect for destroying any sort of cover. One can beat down just about any wooden door, brick surfaces, or concrete faced walls. You can even blow the shit out of any heavy duty/reinforced steel doors with the pressure plate function. Switch the safety to a sub-setting, and and when the round pressure plate impacts a hard surface, the weapon will fire and decimate what lies before it.

Just like any other Sweetwater weapon Johnny the demo canon comes with a set of stock features. Three sides of rails for mounting any personal parts or gadgets, reinforced iron sights, and other top quality parts. Sling points are located on many parts of the gun, and can be altered. The weapon has a thoroughly gutted bolt system with a near indestructible feeding system. This gun fires at a semiautomatic pace, with a slower feeding rate compared to other semi-auto weapons. Included with this gun is an SPW special, 500mw high intensity green laser aiming designator. This burning attachment makes for easy targeting for both the user of the gun, and for his squad mates. The laser beam is visible in both day, and night and has a lengthy opertaion time with V2 lithium batteries.

This weapon was a pain in the ass to finally complete, there were multiple browser crashes, frustrating deleting of parts, but I am very proud of how it all turned out. Unfortunately, the code won't even load when I choose to export, so no pastie :'(

Credit to the whole SPW team, thanks a bunch guys! You've all been doing amazing work, and sorry for absence.

IMG 0607 Stone carved trough

IMG 0607 Stone carved trough

This sort of fluke-shaped carved stone is a bit of a mystery to me. It is imbedded in the concrete just outside someone's door in the old town of Daxu, ??, (south of Guilin). The town's name literally means Big Fair or Big Market. Many of the building along the street housed small factories or other businesses. When I was there 15 years ago I watched steel cable being braided through a card. And there is still a small wine factory on the street.
The carved granite stone must have been part of a drainage system. The fact that the two wings curve down slightly to the central runnel certainly sest this. Also there is the stone's open underside, sesting that it was used, together with others, as a sort of catchment, not a floor. Why use granite and not the ubiquitous Guilin limestone? Granite may resist heat better and is certainly harder than limestone. It may also resist caustic liquids better. Or it may be that heavy tools were being used in the vacinity of the drain and so a material that could withstand hard impacts was used. If the stone were for drainage, though, I'd expect the channel to be rounded at the bottom, not flat. Perhaps the channel is more for catching than draining. I know that in foundries where scrap iron is melted, sand is used to remove impurities. The liquid glass floats to the top of the blast furnace and is drained off, along with the impurities. when the liquid glass has partially solidified, a gaff is used to pull away the glass. But, now that I think about it, the glass is usually drained into loose dirt or sand so it can be pulled away easily, and not onto a solid surface that the glass will adhere to. So I'm still not sure how this stone was used.

Ice Cream! No.. this is not from Jollibee.. Its from Molave Milk Station, Brgy. Dakit, Barili, Cebu, Philippines. This may look like an ordinary ice cream but once you have tasted it... gives you the feeling of that rich fresh milk! So soft and sweet. And it is actually made of milk.. fresh from the farm! (more details in the notes on the picture) This ice cream also gave me the feeling of happiness especially this was eaten together with my family and relatives. I was so happy that it warms my heart and it also warmed my hands that it made the ice cream melts right away!

So, by now, my viewers have probably caught on that I'm not a sweet-tooth, except for ice creams.

Not being a huge fan of souffles, I asked for ice cream instead of souffle. The choice betwee vanilla or passionfruit was a no-brainer.

Here, three scoops of passionfruit ice cream come with macerated strawberries in a syrup (not sure what was in the syrup). It's garnished with a dollop of whipped cream and two almond shortbread-like crisps.

Highway 72 to Loa

Highway 72 to Loa

I love to travel a road or hike a trail, for the first time and this was my first time to drive Utah's high scenic narrow highway 72. I would love to drive it again when the aspen are in fall attire.

My wife and I left our home at 4 pm 17 April 2009 and pretty much drove straight through (19 hours) to a 5 tent site, remote camping spot along the east edge of Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. We traveled in our 1994 Toyota four wheel drive pickup with a cab high canopy; a nice mattress bed in the back; and all our travel, hiking, and backpacking gear “roughly organized” and stored in either the back of the pickup or in the extended cab section of the truck.

When I tired, either my wife drove, or if we were both tired, we pulled into a place where we could both catch a little sleep. The pace was steady, persistent, but not rushed. The highlight of the drive down was Utah highway 72 up over the aspen laden high hills between I-70 and the tiny town of Loa. It was spectacular scenery; it had just become light and most important, we had never traveled this nice little section of road before.

Saturday 18 April 2009
We stopped at the Capitol Reef National Park visitors’ center for some information on Cedar Mesa camp and for me to cheerfully purchase my $10 LIFETIME America the Beautiful pass (one of the benefits of being an “oldmantravels”). The lady ranger, who gleefully sold me the pass, smiled when she said, that the pass would expire, when I do.

We stopped often to take photos as we worked our way down the Burr Trail Road south of Notom, Utah to our campsite. We were pleased with what we found. Juniper trees for shade; knock out view of the snow covered Henry Mountains; trailhead to Red Canyon right next to us; and a picnic table; fire pit; and nearby outhouse - - for all the amenities of camping you could want. Most of all it was quiet and uncrowded.

We arrived at camp near mid-day so we ate and organized our camp. I put up our Siltarp so I could sit in my folding camp chair in the shade. My wife loves to sit in the sun and I have always preferred the shade. Soon, we had the camp ready to our liking so we shouldered our day packs, and headed out for a five mile (with side scrambles) hike, up into scenic “Red Canyon”.

A swarm of gnats attacked us at camp, when we returned to camp so we took a short hike across the road until the combination of increased wind and decreased temperatures, removed our tormentors. We slept well in our truck canopy bed that night, though it got so cold that our water bottles in the cab of the truck, froze.

Sunday 19 April 2009
After a great night’s sleep, we fixed breakfast and repacked the truck to a bright sunny, if cool, desert morning. After leaving Cedar Mesa Camp, we turned south and drove along the capitol reef to the intersection of the Burr Trail leading up over the reef and through nice canyon country to Boulder, Utah.

We stopped frequently along this scenic road to take short scrambling hikes to viewpoints, wildflowers, or just for the fun of it through the slickrock country (always with camera at ready).

At the top of the switchback road up to the top of the reef we turned north on a four wheel drive road to visit “Peek-a-boo” rock and walk some of the washes in the area. An ice chest full of cold diet Pepsi, was always handy back at our pickup truck, and appreciated.

We stopped along a short, sweet, steep, narrow canyon along the paved portion of the Burr Trail and I took a fast hike to the headwall, to get a few photos. It was here, that I had my first, of many, “raven” encounters we would have during this trip. The raven became the “colophon, hallmark, and icon” for this road trip.

Before leaving home a good flickr friend of mine (petalouda62) from Belgium, had recommended a book for me. I bought it and saved it to read on this trip, which I did, every chance I got, when we weren’t hiking. The book: Mind of the Raven by Bernd Heinrich. I thought I knew quite a bit about these highly intelligent, often mischievous, and often aloof birds - - but I would find in the book both entertainment and interesting information on these “wolf-birds”.

So deep in this short dead end sandstone canyon, I heard the constant calling, echoing back and forth down the canyon. As soon as I left the canyon and turned to take a few more photos of it - - silently down and out of the canyon, glided the resident raven. It was one of many magic moments on this trip, involving Corvus corax. Thank you Roberta.

We reached highway 12 at Boulder, Utah and drove on to Escalante, where we had a motel room reserved for Sunday and Monday nights (Circle “D”). Robert is the live in manager of the friendly little Escalante, Utah motel, and it is where we always try to stay when in the area.

Dinner at Escalante Outfitters, and a visit to the Escalante visitors’ center, completed our fun second full day of this road trip.

Couldn't get a good shot at Peek a boo rock as I was facing the sun, but still I wanted a photo or two to remember it by. This view is off a four wheel drive route to Upper Muley Twist Canyon.

Palace Umer Hayat From Above

Palace Umer Hayat From Above

My Historical P A K I S T A N.

Omar Hayat Mahal (Urdu: ??? ???? ???) is a 19th century wooden architectural wonder of Chiniot, a tehsil of Jhang District in Pakistan. It is also known as Gulzar Manzil.
Omar Hayat Palace is a five story building which stands in the heart of the city. Two upper stories were removed in 1993 due to heavy rainfall and storms which may have affected the adjoining buildings. It is a great tourist attraction for both local and foreign visitors.
Members of the Shaikh family migrated from Calcutta to Chiniot around the 18th or 19th century. Sheikh Omar Hayat who was a successful trader born in a middle class family. He decided to construct a magnificent palace for his newborn son in 1923.
Syed Hassan Shah was assigned the task of palace's construction. He gathered many famous artisans from different places who continued working day and night for 10 ten years. Rahim Bakhsh Pirjha and Elahi Bakhsh Pirjha who were masters in manabat kari did wood carving. Gazeteer Vol XXXII, Jhang district 1929 states, "The house built by Sheikh Omar Hayat is a sort of local wonder, as it cost more than Rs 200,000 to make and rises high above all other buildings of area". The construction of the palace completed in 1935 and Mr. Hayat expired in same year just a couple of months before its completion.
History claims that Mr. Hayat's only son Gulzar Muhammad's marriage in 1938 brought an ironic twist of fate in the shape of death. He (Gulzar) was found dead in the palace the very next day of his marriage. The news of son’s death lofted loads of grief on mother who died remembering him. Both the mother and the son were buried in the courtyard of the ground floor of the palace.
Mr. Hayat's relatives left the palace thinking it as a subject to bad luck for sheikh family, while servants continued living for a couple of years and then parted from it. An orphanage was established by some religious leaders and then it was evacuated when its top story collapsed. Next came the Qabza groups who got shops and houses constructed on the piece of land lying next to it.
The palace's building is perhaps the last of Mughal’s architectural style, or a Mughal Revival building ("revival" buildings are interpretations of an old architectural style by people of a later era). Unique carving cuts on the doors, windows and jhirokas reflect a colour of their own. The roofs, balconies, stairways, terrace and the stucco designs make a perfect interior. The facade of the building is decorated with a fine inlay of bricks, the dazzling shine of marble and picturesque shades help it rank among the great palaces of Mughal era landlords.
Later on this placed was occupied by Qabza mafia who destroyed most of the building However seeing death of its glory in 1989, Athar Tahir, the then deputy commissioner of Jhang, took the palace into his custody. He removed the encroachments and started its renovation with an expenditure of Rs. 1,700,000.
It was handed over to local municipal committee and a library, cultural centre and a museum were new additions which regained some vigour. A rare collection of thousands of books and subscription for seven dailies was introduced to learners and it was publicly opened the then Punjab Governor, Mian Azhar.
In Year 1997 the municipal committee refused to bear the expenses of the latest achievements and terminated the subscription of newspapers and other reading material.
It was later handed over to auqaf department in year 1998 which also failed to improve its condition. The situation is getting worse by day. The library has been closed while the reading room is standing without its assets. It was only in 1989 when the building was last looked worth renovation.
At present the palace is very much out of sorts. Its walls have developed cracks rainy water pours in. The woodwork has lost colour. If the situation does not soon be handled in good manner, days are not far when the city will lose one of its historical monuments.

Birth of mary

Birth of mary

MARY'S BIRTH.

Several days before the Blessed Virgin's birth Anna had told Joachim
that the time was approaching for her to be delivered. She sent
messengers to Sephoris, where her younger sister Maraha lived; to the
widow Enue (sister of Elizabeth) in the valley of Zabulon; and to her
niece Mary Salome at Bethsaida, asking these three women to come to
her. I saw them on their journeys. The widow Enue had a serving lad
with her; the other two women were accompanied by their husbands who,
however, went back on approaching Nazareth. I saw that on the day
before Anna was delivered Joachim sent his many menservants out to the
herds, and among Anna's new maidservants he kept in the house only
those who were needed. He, too, went out into his nearest pasture. I
saw that Anna's firstborn daughter, Mary Heli, looked after the house.
She was then about nineteen years old and was married to Cleophas, one
of Joachim's chief shepherds, by whom she had a little daughter, Mary
Cleophas, now about four years old. After praying, Joachim chose out
his finest lambs, kids, and cattle, sending shepherds to take them to
the Temple as a thank-offering. He did not return home until nightfall.

I saw the three cousins arriving at Anna's house in the evening. They
went to her in her room behind the hearth and embraced her. After Anna
had told them that the time was near for her to be delivered, they
stood up and sang a hymn together: `Praise the Lord God; He has shown
mercy to His people, and has redeemed Israel, and has fulfilled the
promise which He gave to Adam in Paradise that the seed of the woman
should crush the head of the serpent,' and so on. I can no longer
recite it all by heart. Anna prayed as though in ecstasy. She
introduced into the hymn all the prophetic symbols of Mary. She said:
`The seed given by God to Abraham has ripened in me.' She spoke of the
promise to Sarah of Isaac's birth and said: `The blossoming of Aaron's
rod is perfected in me.' At that moment I saw her as though suffused
with light; I saw the room full of radiance, and Jacob's ladder
appearing above it. The women were overcome with astonishment and joy,
and I think that they also saw the vision. When the prayer of welcome
was over, the travelers were refreshed with a slight meal of bread and
fruit, and water mixed with balsam. They ate and drank standing up, and
then lay down till midnight to rest from their journey. Anna did not go
to bed, but prayed, and at midnight woke the other women to pray with
her. They followed her to her praying-place behind a curtain.

Anna opened the doors of a little cupboard in the wall which contained
a casket with holy objects. On each side were lights--perhaps lamps,
but I am not sure. They had to be pushed up in their holders, and then
little bits of shavings put underneath to prevent them from sinking
down. After this the lights were lit. There was a cushioned stool at
the foot of this sort of little altar. The casket contained some of
Sarah's hair (Anna had a great veneration for her), some of Joseph's
bones (brought by Moses from Egypt), and something belonging to Tobias,
I think a relic of his clothing; also the little shining, white,
pear-shaped goblet from which Abraham had drunk when blessed by the
angel. (This had been given to Joachim from the Ark of the Covenant
when he was blessed in the Temple. I now know that this blessing took
the form of wine and bread and was a strengthening and sacramental
food.)

Anna knelt before the little cupboard with one of the women on each
side and the third behind her. She recited another hymn; I think it
mentioned the burning bush of Moses. Then I saw the room filled with
supernatural light which became more intense as it wove itself round
Anna. The women sank to the ground as though stunned. The light round
Anna took the exact form of the burning bush of Moses on Horeb, and I
could no longer see her. The whole flame streamed inwards; and then I
suddenly saw that Anna received the shining child Mary in her hands,
wrapped her in her mantle, pressed her to her heart, and laid her naked
on the stool in front of the holy relics, still continuing her prayer.
Then I heard the child cry, and saw that Anna brought out wrappings
from under the great veil which enveloped her. She wrapped the child
first in gray and then in red swaddling bands up to her arms; her
breast, arms, and head were bare. The appearance of the burning bush
around Anna had now vanished.

The women stood up and received the newborn child in their arms with
great astonishment. They shed tears of joy. They all joined in a hymn
of praise, and Anna lifted her child up on high as though making an
offering. I saw at that moment the room full of light, and beheld
several angels singing Gloria and Alleluia.

Title: Le Canigou

Date Made: 1921

Artist: Juan Gris

Artist Bio: Spanish painter, sculptor, and illustrator, 1887-1927, active in France

Materials & Techniques: oil on canvas

Dimensions: overall: 34 3/4 x 48 5/8 x 2 3/4 inches (88.265 x 123.5075 x 6.985 cm)

Inscriptions: signature, dated, upper left, Juan Gris / 12-21; inscription, upper center, LE CANIGOU

Credit Line: Room of Contemporary Art Fund, 1947

Description from Albright-Knox Art Gallery: Painting and Sculpture from Antiquity to 1942

To avoid the rigors of winter in Paris, Gris spent from late October 1921 to April 1922 in Ceret, a small town at the eastern end of the French Pyrenees. The window of his hotel room looked out onto the mountains, of which the Canigou was the highest peak. On 23 December 1921, he wrote to his friend and dealer Kahnweiler in Paris, "I am really enthusiastic about a picture I am beginning of the white peak of the Canigou covered with snow" (D. H. Kahnweiler, Letters of Juan Gris [London: 1956], 134). It is virtually certain that this remark refers to the painting in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

The problem of unifying a landscape viewed through an open window with a still life placed before it was not new to Gris's work. In his 1915 "Place Ravignan," now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, he wove together a vista through his studio window and the boxes, bottles and papers placed on a table in front of it. Several other works dealing with this same problem date from 1921-22. Gris accomplished the integration of objects widely separated in distance, size and identity through careful analogies of form which establish sparse geometric accords on the picture surface. The peaks and sweeps of the mountain range are repeated in the upper triangular corner of the table, the lower contour of the guitar and the draped tablecloth at the bottom of the picture. Additional duplications of forms confound the identification of objects and their placement in space: the tilted ovoids of sound hole and goblet, the decorous upper curve of guitar and the identical contour below and to the right and the centerfold of the book, which appears to extend for the entire height of the canvas. The curiously irregular margin confuses the reality of painted image and frame, as does also the painted lettering at the top. Golden Section relationships, principally in the left side of the painting, create a fundamental sense of order and agreeable proportions. (Daniel J. Heenan has diagrammed this painting and has discovered at least 12 verifiable applications of the Golden Section along the painting's major linear axes [Gallery files]. Gris was a participant in the early "Section d'or" group discussions and 1912 exhibition. Specialized mathematical relationships figure in other of his works. See Canfeld, Art Bulletin, March 1965, p. 128f.)

Although Gris did not consider himself primarily a colorist, here he constructs elegant harmonies from a greatly restricted palette. Sober browns and greys, familiar Cubist tones, are modified by a chill and biting blue. This icy hue and the stark whites convey almost tangibly the crispness and clarity of a winter atmosphere and reaffirm the cold of which Gris continually complained in his letters.

332 West 83rd Street House

332 West 83rd Street House

Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The 332 West 83rd Street House, designed by well-known architect and developer Clarence F. True, was built on speculation in 1898-99 as one house of a picturesque group of six houses on the southeast corner of Riverside Drive and West 83rd Street. Today the 332 West 83rd Street House is architecturally significant and as one of the five extant houses in this group represents the first period of development on Riverside Drive. True designed several hundred houses, primarily in groups, on the Upper West Side in the years between 1890 and 1901, and was largely responsible for promoting the development and establishing the character of lower Riverside Drive.

The houses in the group at Riverside and West 83rd Street were designed in True's signature "Elizabethan Revival" style based on French and English Renaissance prototypes and built by True's development firm, the Riverside Building Company; they are the northernmost of True's designs built along the Drive. The design of the 332 West 83rd Street House is characterized by such picturesque elements as an asymmetrically-placed bowfront, contrasting red Roman brick and limestone facing, segmentally- arched and rectangular openings, keyed surrounds, decorative ironwork, a steeply-pitched tile roof with a gable, a dormer, prominent chimneys, and end-walls. All of the houses in the group were originally designed with projecting bowfronts or bays and low stoops, but these features on the houses along Riverside Drive became the focus of an interesting legal controversy several years after construction.

As the result of a lawsuit brought by an adjacent property owner, the court ruled in 1903 that no one had the authority to place permanent encroachments onto public thoroughfares, and the owners of the houses facing onto Riverside Drive were thus ordered to remove the projections. In 1911 these facades were removed and rebuilt to follow the diagonal of the Riverside Drive property lines. The 332 West 83rd Street House (owned by Robert E. Dowling, president of the City Investing Co.) apparently was not subject to the lawsuit as it does not face the Drive. It remains unaltered in its original picturesque Elizabethan Revival design.

The Development of Riverside Drive

The Upper West Side, known as Bloomingdale prior to its urbanization, remained largely undeveloped until the 1880s. In the early eighteenth century, Bloomingdale Road (later renamed the Boulevard and finally Broadway in 1898) was opened through rural Bloomingdale and provided the northern route out of the city which was then concentrated at the southern tip of Manhattan. The Upper West Side was included in the Randel Survey of 1811 (known as the Commissioners' Map) which established a uniform grid of avenues and cross streets in Manhattan as far north as 155th Street, although years elapsed before streets on the Upper West Side were actually laid out, some as late as the 1870s and 1880s, and the land was subdivided into building lots. Improved public transportation to the area contributed to the growth and sustained development of the Upper West Side, particularly the completion in 1879 of the Elevated Railway on Ninth Avenue (renamed Columbus Avenue in 1890).

The biggest boost to the development of the West End (the area west of Broadway), however, was the creation of Riverside Drive and Park (a designated New York City Scenic Landmark). The presence of the Park and Drive was an important factor in making this area desirable for high-quality residential development. In 1865 the first proposal for converting the land on the Upper West Side along the eastern shore of the Hudson River into an ornamental park had been presented by Park Commissioner William R. Martin. The purchase of the park site and initial plans were approved in 1866. The drive, as proposed at this time, was to be a straight 100-foot wide road; however, this plan was impractical due to the existing topography. Hired by the Commissioners in 1873, Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) , already distinguished by his collaboration with Calvert Vaux (1824-1895) in the successful design for Central Park, proposed an alternate scheme.

Olmsted's design for Riverside Park and Drive took into consideration the pre-existing topography, landscape possibilities, and views, resulting in a park and drive that would be amenable for horses and pleasure driving, would provide shaded walks for pedestrians, and would also allow easy access to and scenic vistas from the real estate bordering it on the east. Olmsted's plan was adopted by the Commissioners but the park was not executed under his supervision, due to his departure from New York City; it was actually developed between 1875 and 1900 by other designers including Vaux, Samuel Parsons, and Julius Munckwitz, who did not adhere to Olmsted's original scheme in its entirety. By the fall of 1879, work was completed between 72nd a

Sycamore Gap

Sycamore Gap

Well..... torture was the name of the game for this shot! Not with a 3am start this time, but the slight bit of physical exertion it took to get here! Those of you that know me, will know I am not the worlds fittest person, those who know me even better will know that I am totally unfit, that I don't like heights, or downward slopes, or hills, or climbing! Put a combination of all of the above together several times over and that was what it took to get this shot.

I knew I wanted the shot, it looked like it involved a fair bit of effort, I considered that perhaps the shot was not worth taking.. but in the end i decided that climbing the side of Steel rigg was worth it, I mean toddlers were doing it for goodness sake... some were even running up it! (just to show me up!) so we went for it.
We had a bit of a chuckle that knowing our luck someone would decide to have a picnic at the base of the tree just as we got there.

The interesting shade of purple that I was by the time we finally got to this tree was not complimentary! Stumpy bore the brunt, and the camera equipment which i chucked at him at the first stile during an attack of vertigo.

So anyhow, by the time we got here and I rediscovered what oxygen inhalation felt like and had found the energy to put the tripod up.. a couple of very nice people decided to choose that point to sit down for a picnic, right at the base of the tree! Who would ever have imagined that! Which made me very happy indeed.

After half an hour, they were still sat there, we were looking at them, they were looking at us, they were very interested in the tripod and camera set up that we had pointing at them and they watched us for a good 15 minutes more. It was at this point that Stumpy decided to politely sest to me that he would be' jolly chuffed if perhaps they would consider popping out of the shot everso slightly', or words to that effect it seems they possibly overheard this gently worded request, and promptly moved out of the shot, much to our relief and gratitude.

Sycamore gap is a natural cleft between two hills, Hadrians Wall runs along the centre and the tree is in the middle. It was used as a location in 'Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves'. I bet Kevin Costner didn't have as many problems with picnic people refusing to budge.

After we finally got the shot in the bag, Stumpy discovered a really easy and flat route back to the car that involved no hills, climbing, or dips, or vertigo. On asking if he had seen this route on the way there.... he replied he had, but thought that the effort of going the hard way would make me appreciate the shot more afterwards. Hmmmm!!!
I said words to the effect of 'you jolly mean person'

Perhaps now.. I do kind of appreciate the effort involved in taking this shot, and begrudgingly I appreciate the sestion of the crop from him too.

Three Apples

Three Apples

For those of you that aren't Hello Kitty® superfans, the title Three Apples refers the precise weight of the iconic character as listed in her bio. It's also the title of a current exhibition celebrating Hello Kitty's 35th Anniversary. Hosted by the massive, Los Angeles, Harajuku-themed gallery and cafe Royal/T, Three Apples celebrates all things Hello Kitty through a retrospective and reinterpretation of the character by a variety of contemporary, cutting edge artists. I was flattered to receive an invitation to participate from curator Jamie Rivadeneira.

Hello Kitty sat on my desk for a few weeks while I took some time to work on other projects and brainstorm my piece for the show. I had hoped to organically find her character and subsequently a scene to place her in, but instead I came to release the lasting power of the character. She is almost without identity, free of concrete association. Truly an icon for the time, she is a totem and emblem of kinship for devotees of cute. With this realization, it was easy to take another step and cast Hello Kitty not just as a revered symbol, but also as a god.

Young Julia Coburn is seen in a desperate (albeit cute) state, floating away under a canopy of balloons. As Hello Kitty looks on, it's purposely unclear as to what role she plays...or will play in Julia's survival.

Day 116- of longing and jealousy

Day 116- of longing and jealousy

of course today is a beautiful day outside. why am i bitter about that? because i'm stuck inside studying all day for this micro quiz that i'm terrified for. my grade in that class? yeah, not so much, so i would love to knock with one out of the park. so i'll be studying ALL day. i wish i were outside, playing frisbee with my yellow lab, kevin.

i took my psych quiz, i feel really confident about it. i'm glad i'm switching my major to psych, anyway. next is my chem test. not really all that worried about it. they're always straight from the book.

then it's another hour of studying, my micro lab quiz, the REST of micro class [which looks fairly short, actually] and then ZOOM out the door and headed home. i'm so excited to be going home for thanksgiving. i need a long weekend to unwind and get ready for finals week *sigh* i'm super jealous of everyone who's already home, or headed there right now.

i'm going to bring my micro book with me on break and spend a few hours a day completing my final review [which i already have part 1 of.] this is another test i'd like to ace. i really wish i'd treated my ADD sooner, now it feels like a game of catch-up.

OH! and my sister apologized yesterday for accusing me of stealing her jeans. i called her earlier that day, and apologized for hanging up on her, told her it was rude, and i hoped she would forgive me. i also offered to help look for her jeans and go shopping with her [on my dad's dime] to find a new pair.

she called me back later that night, and apologized. she said my mother had found the most recent pair of jeans that went missing, and that she owed me an apology. i forgave her, we chatted just a little [because i was in the middle of homework] then disconnected. i think we're still a little bit bristled towards each other, but hopefully it's nothing that a parade, a turkey, too much pie, and sweet potatoes won't fix.

mannequins in deco window, Sidmouth

mannequins in deco window, Sidmouth

Near the sea end of Fore Street, Sidmouth, is a clothes shop with the most beautiful deco-style windows. It's a wonder it's survived.

UPDATE: 18 JUNE 2010
We went past this afternoon and found the place closed up, and surrounded by builders' shuttering. We fear the worst.

FURTHER UPDATE: 29 JULY 2010
Looks very bad, I'm afraid. I poked the camera in through a high hole in the shuttering, as we passed by today, and it looks as though all this window work has been removed.

UPDATE: 17 SEPTEMBER 2010
Last entry wasn't far wrong, I'm sorry to say. The new shop front is very bland and boring, with the only feature being that some of the deco panels have been used along the top. I'll post a decent picture when I can.

Blue Wall with a Moravian Window

Blue Wall with a Moravian Window

"But tomorrow, dawn will come the way I picture her,
barefoot and disheveled, standing outside my window
in one of the fragile cotton dresses of the poor.
She will look in at me with her thin arms extended,
offering a handful of birdsong and a small cup of light."
William Collins

In the late afternoon shadows, I passed by this aged window in the historic section of Salem, North Carolina. At one time a thriving German Moravian community, much of the simple european archetecture and atmosphere still exists.

After I shot this I knew it wouldn't be long until I posted it on Flickr. The shadows are just so satisfying. True, the poem is about dawn, but it sorta fit for dusk as well.

White Dupioni Silk Drapes

white dupioni silk drapes

    dupioni silk
  • The silk yarns are made from the cocoon of two silk worms that have nested together. In spinning, the double strand is not separated, creating uneven yarns that give the fabric a crisp texture with irregular slubs. Also referred to as dupion or doupioni.

  • Produced from two silkworms that spin a cocoon together, thus making a strong double-thread silk. It has an advantage over some other types of silks because it usually resists wrinkles, which assists in the usability of the finished fabric.

  • A crisp fabric with irregular slubs. It is perfect for tailored slimmer silhouettes like flat-front trousers, jackets and fitted blouses and dresses. Silk Dupioni can be machine washed in the gentle cycle and drip-dried.

antique 16 inch light fixtures www.vintagelights.com

antique 16 inch light fixtures www.vintagelights.com

Add some real vintage charm to your kitchen with these antique lighting fixtures. Great for over an island or counter.
At 16 inches across the widest point they would be not be lost in the rest of the details of the kitchen. Nice Greek Key detailing around the top of the bottom bowl.
The fitter would depend upon how long you need the drop to be, so it is not shown. The one in the images is for the picture taking only.
These would have been seen in bank lobbies, dept. stores, and large offices in the teens and twenties and can handle up to 200 watts each (even more with a Mogul socket).
The milk glass provides a pleasant light source, unlike many of the fixtures today where the shade is clear glass and you look directly into the glare of the light bulb.

Vintage red kitchen fixture | VintageLights.com

This antique lighting fixture would have been typically found in vintage kitchens or bathrooms where there was a little bit of red accents in the room. Red has always been popular as an accent color in the kitchen, especially on light fixtures.
The vintage shade has raised ribs which have been painted with a red stripe and it looks to be the original paint. White porcelain fitter is in excellent condition with no noticeable chips or cracks. Pull chain socket has been rebuilt for decades more of usable service and the outlet has been disabled for safety concerns.
Height: 5 inches also the width of the back plate
Width of shade: 5 1/8 inches
Projection: 8 1/2 inches
