Shot with a Lensbaby Composer on Philadelphia's famed South Street yesterday, at the site of Zipperhead, a punk rock/alternative clothing and accessories store that has relocated up the street and changed it's name to Crash Bang Boom.

For a taste of what you might have missed by not visiting this location, here's an excerpt from a 1993 NYT's article:

"It was Saturday afternoon and, as usual, the browsers were out in force along the commercial stretch of Philadelphia's South Street. They were almost everywhere, in all corners, from near the Delaware River where the section of retail stores, cafes and theaters begins to where it peters out in benign urban blight 12 blocks to the west.

In one cluster, three young girls and two adults stopped in front of a shop window display where two battered mannequins modeled the black lace and leather apparel associated with sadomasochistic games.

"Is that a boy or a girl?" one girl asked, pointing. The adults exchanged a nervous look. One mannequin held a whip and a poster that said, "Keep an open mind." The man said, "We're not quite sure."

After a moment or two of giggles all around, the man decided they should move on. "That's enough street education for now," he said, rounding them up with his arms and pushing them forward.

The store, Zipperhead, an 11-year-old alternative boutique that has followed forward fashion trends from punk to grunge, has gained a reputation for outrageousness in this hugely traditional city of 1.6 million people, where one of the fiercest debates of the last decade was over whether a building could rise taller than a statue of William Penn atop City Hall. (The building won.)

When he opened the store in 1981, Rick Millan gained attention by running a "name this store" contest. A college student came up with the name as well as designing the store's logo, a zipper opening to expose the insides of a man's skull."

According to Wikipedia, The Dead Milkmen's 1988 song "Punk Rock Girl" makes references to Zipperhead. (("One Saturday I took a walk to Zipperhead; I met a girl there -- almost knocked me dead").

I wouldn't know about that. I think I was still listening to James Taylor in 1988.

Abel Iloco is a fabric locally crafted in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Three Baranggays in Vigan (Camangaan, Mondoro and San Pedro) is best known to be the center of abel weaving. Abel weaved products can be locally found in Vigan’s souvenir shops located along Crisologo Street and Vigan Public Market. Abel-weaving involves the use of a wooden handloom and other accessories. The wooden handloom was the equivalent of a sewing machine in the past. The material used to make the abel fabrics are cotton yarn locally called “sagut”. The northern Philippines, particularly, grew cotton plants whose flowers were then intricately and lengthily processed in the homes to produce yarn. On the whole, abel-weaving follows a very intricate process – from preparing and dyeing the yarn, to arranging different colors of yarn to produce the desired design, and operating the wooden handloom with the synchronized movement of both hands and feet.

I've been drawing a lot lately, for a hobby. My mom is an artist and I've been drawing my whole life practically, but now I'm trying to get better and I have a reason - I love fashion sketching and would love to design clothing, not necessarily a line, but at least for myself so I can sew them. I'm not as good at people but hopefully getting there. ;) Now I just need to work on translating a drawing to a sewing pattern, lol. This one isn't my design, it was a dress I saw and drew, but unfortunately I haven't got the foggiest idea where it was from. =P

Me, Ready to Take the Bridge

The duster did not go well in Calgary, regretfully. Two hundred pieces did not fly off the racks. Twenty-something crawled off the racks. One Sunday, I wear the duster to my salon in London. I'm closed Sundays and I usually don't dress on Sunday all too well. The ripped jeans look, stilettos and a t-shirt and a long coat to cover it all up. On the way from the coffee shop on the corner of Piccadilly, a young man stops me and asks "dude, where did you get the coat (British accent) ?" He's dressed in Goth and he has his cheek pierced. Great looking guy, "jail bate of course" of maybe 18 or 19, but the safety pin through the cheek has me wondering if I have lost my mind asking this kid fashion advice. I take out a pen and ask him where he shops for his clothes. I write some names on my paper cup. Two weeks later the remaining coats are hanging in a Goth shop in London and within three months they are completely sold through. Why did they sell in London and not in Calgary? I was told by the shop owner, who wanted me to make more (gently,I refused his kind offer), "it was because of the electric blue poka dotted liner." Go figure. PS. I never made another leather duster and never will. Lesson learned. One has to know one's marketplace. I got lucky on this one.

I had come along with the famous Talwadi Mazgaon Mandal of Yeshwant Jadhav and patron Bala Nandgaonkar..I shot it by accident , as the Talwadi boys had taken me along with them to all the places they break the Dahi Handi and Vartak Nagar was the last stop.. Sanskruti Yuva Pratishtan Vartak Nagar Thane .

This year due to work commitment I was at Lokhandwala with my wife so missed out on the Ranade Road Dadar Dahi Handi that I shoot every year , and after I completed my work I dropped my wife home took the Slow Local For Thane..my tryst with destiny..

I walk barefeet and I was fasting too , Pratap Naik is not just a Shiv Sena leader he is man of the masses and for 3 years I am trying to understand his magic with the crowds , they love him as much as he loves them , they are like his children , and this man iconic ever loving never tires, his energy levels are not human at all..

Since morning actors drop by ,. first it was Bollywood Hunk John Abraham than Neha Dupia Udita Goswami and the lover boy dude Rohit Roy and ace fashion designer Vikram Phadnis the list is long.. they all love Pratap Sarnaik.. I love him too..

He is the Showman of Thane no doubt about it and let me remind you he is down to earth , humble but that is all fine you try not to rub him the wrong way he is street savvy and difficult man to have as an opponent this is my observation , I read his body language and he is always smiling , his wife Bhabiji I found has the remote control.. though she pretends she lost it somewhere in the Bazar..

The team Sarnaik has some great personalities all working as family , Papu Bhai made sure there was victuals for breaking my Ramzan fast and I cant get over his words ..Apka Swab Hame Bhi Milta Hai Aisa lagta hai ke hamne bhi roza rakha hai and I am crying as I write this this is Love India .. beyond Hindu Muslim Sikh Isai.,. This is the true spirit of Vande Matram everybody under one Flag Ek Jan Ek Tiranga ..

And in keeping with the mission of peace Pratap Sarnaik saw that all his guests wore the Gandhi cap keeping the Soul of Anna Hazare alive yes whatever party whatever our caste creed we have get rid of Corruption at all cost .. Lau Ya Jau..

The tribes in south Ethiopia recycle everything. An empty bottle of water has a high value. For months now, tribes uses the scratched sim cards that they find in Key Afer market as earrings. For some reason both of Smiley Cultures album where rather rare which is really odd since the man was some kind of cross-over sensation in the UK with his hit songs such as »Cockney Translation« and »Police Officer«.

This set, which I was totally unaware of about until about a year ago, gathers his most known songs in showcase format. The two songs mentioned above are included in their original mixes while the songs »Entertainer, Entertainer« and »Shan A Shan« are presented in brand new remixes. Personally I've never heard the original mixes of those songs so I can't really say if they're any improvement to their original cuts. But both songs are brilliant UK dancehall. The cut of Heavenless used on »Entertainer, Entertainer« has that really pumping bass. The remaining two songs are presented in »previously unreleased versions«. »Slam Bass« has a nice rub-a-dub rhythm over which Smiley flows in finest of patterns, nicely interjected by elegant and sparse horns. A brilliant new version. »Roots Reality« is over a nice cut of Sleng Teng.

If you rate the UK chatters of the mid 80's then this is a crucial set. Generally I feel there are too few showcase albums with deejays. This one shows that it works brilliantly.
