80s Fashion Leg Warmers

80s fashion leg warmers

    80s fashion
  • While in the 1970s, the silhouette of fashion tended to be characterized by close fitting clothes on top with wider, looser clothes on the bottom, this trend completely reversed itself in the early 1980s as both men and women began to wear looser shirts and tight, close-fitting pants.

    leg warmers
  • A pair of tubular knitted garments designed to cover the leg from ankle to knee or thigh, esp. worn by dancers during rehearsal

  • Leg warmers are coverings for the lower legs, similar to socks but thicker and generally footless. Leg warmers were originally dancewear worn by ballet and other classic dancers. Leg warmers are worn by some dancers to warm the lower calf, but others doubt their usefulness.

  • Knitted footless socks, worn by ballet dancers to conceal warmth during and after exersize. Come in a wide range of colours.

Descobri novas paixoes.

E a onda 80's continua! Mais polainas por ai!!!

ps.: Amo meu sapato cor-de-rosa!

Richard Todd

Richard Todd

Richard Todd obituary

Actor best known for his role in the classic second world war film The Dam Busters

Richard Todd, who has died of cancer aged 90, will be best remembered for the films in which he played a wide assortment of clean-cut British heroes. His most famous performance was as Wing Commander Guy Gibson in The Dam Busters (1955), although he also played Robin Hood and Sir Walter Raleigh.

As dour and stiff upper-lipped as any of the characters he portrayed in his highly successful film career in the 1940s and 1950s, he was one of the first members of the Parachute Regiment to jump on D-day – a real-life role he later echoed, albeit at a higher rank, in The Longest Day (1962), the reconstruction of the invasion of Normandy 17 years after the event (another actor posed as Todd himself).

As Gibson, Todd starred as the leader of the daring airborne mission in May 1943 to smash German industry in the Ruhr valley by strategic bombing of its dams, causing massive flooding. The movie retold the story of Barnes Wallis's invention of a bouncing bomb that skimmed the surface of the reservoirs before colliding with the three targets – two of which were destroyed.

Born in Dublin, Todd was the son of an army major of Scots and Irish descent. His early life in England was one of private schools, including Shrewsbury, genteel poverty and family squabbles, usually over his father's drinking and extravagances that included buying a large Chrysler roadster behind his wife's back.

Through two divorces, Todd himself displayed a love of large cars, large houses and large domestic staffs, which only his earlier career as a film star – one of the busiest faces in British cinema – could comfortably support.

After the Italia Conti school of acting in London, where a teacher advised him to "bring it up from the genitals, dear!" – advice beyond his dramatic range – Todd first appeared with the Welsh Players, a precarious touring group, then with Dundee Rep. Just before the second world war, he appeared at the Regents Park open air theatre, then got a part in a mediocre film, For Them That Trespass (1949), and a seven-year contract with the Associated British Film Corporation (ABFC), then the main rival to Rank.

His tear-jerking portrayal of a dying and bitter Scots corporal in his second contract film, The Hasty Heart (1949), made him an instant hot property. Ronald Reagan was in a supporting role, his only appearance in a film made in Britain. The two men stayed in touch and once dined together at 10 Downing Street with a woman they both admired, Margaret Thatcher. Hitchcock used him in Stage Fright (1950), Walt Disney used him in Robin Hood (1952). But Todd was always uneasy in Hollywood. Once, in his enthusiasm for tennis and ignorance of local idiom, he told a startled Ruth Roman that he would love a knock up with her, and on another occasion he arrived for work in a car with a flat battery that his distinguished director King Vidor had to help push-start.

Todd nevertheless appeared as Raleigh, alongside Bette Davis, in The Virgin Queen in 1955, made The Sword and the Rose (1953) for Disney and Saint Joan (1957) for Otto Preminger. He certainly made ABFC more money than his salary by being hired out to other film-makers. But he was happiest while filming in England, although he refused the lead in The Guns of Navarone (1961) and was also unable to accept the role of James Bond – despite being Ian Fleming's first choice – because of other commitments. Sean Connery took the role instead.

By the end of the 1950s, the studio system was breaking up, his contract was not renewed, and wheeler-dealing over individual films became the norm. While flirting with television, for which he did Carrington VC in 1960, he became a stage actor-manager by forming Triumph theatre productions and touring middlebrow plays. Under the Triumph umbrella, he appeared in Royal Shakespeare Company productions, including The Hollow Crown. He also played the lead for eight unbroken years from 1981 in Richard Harris's The Business of Murder in the West End. His denigration of his own business sense and his squire's tweeds and eyeglass were partly a pose.

He became a dairy farmer from 1957, leading to his appointment as president of the Henley and District Agricultural Association in Buckinghamshire. A very British perfectionist, he confessed to a dream that, despite the warnings of his friends and everyone else he talked to, there would always be a market for the best. So he bought the very best Jersey cows, the best hens and the best pigs – and ran straight into trouble. Todd claimed that this came about because the Milk Marketing Board tended to help mediocre produce at the expense of the best. In those days most dairy farmers found it expedient to market their produce through the board, but he decided to go it alone.

"I saw to it that my Wensleydale cheese came from Wensleydale, my Gloucester from Gloucester," he said

Salaryman

Salaryman

According to researcher Ezra Vogel, the word "salaryman" saw widespread use in Japan by 1930, "although the white-collar class remained relatively small until the rapid expansion of government bureaucracies and war-related industry before and during World War II."[1]

The term does not include all workers who receive a set salary, but only to "white-collar workers in the large bureaucracy of a business firm or government office".[2] Workers in the mizu shobai and entertainment industries (including actors and singers) are not included even though their income may be salary based. Similarly, doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants, musicians, artists, politicians, the self-employed, and corporate executives are also excluded.

A typical description of the salaryman is a white-collar desk worker in a suit and tie, who may or may not have a high grade of education. However, the term may also be used to give a highly negative connotation (see Social image). The word "businessman" is often used to avoid the negative image. A significant percentage of Japan's workers are salarymen. In sociology, the salaryman is known as Japan's new middle class, as opposed to the old middle class consisting of farmers and storeowners.

The media often portray the salaryman in negative fashion for lack of initiative and originality. Because of this portrayal, communities may be less willing to consult the salaryman for his emotional problems, which often leads to clinical depression or even suicide. Corporations are often more willing to fire salarymen to lower costs, and many Japanese students are attempting to veer off the typical path of graduating from college to enter a corporation and become a salaryman. The act of escaping from the corporate lifestyle is known as datsusara.

Why Your Prescription Takes So Damn Long To Fill: A Foul-Mouthed, Liberal Pharmacist Breaks The Curse Of Christmas And Strikes Back Against The ... The Profession He Grudgingly Grew To Love

" .... I call your doctors office and am put on hold for 5 minutes, then informed that your was phoned in to my competitor on the other side of town. Phoning the competitor, I am immediately put on hold for 5 minutes before speaking to a clerk, who puts me back on hold to wait for the pharmacist. Your is then transferred to me, and now I have to get the 2 phone calls that have been put on hold while this was being done. Now I return to the counter to ask if we've ever filled s for you before. For some reason, you think that "for you" means "for your cousin" and you answer my question with a "yes", whereupon I go the computer and see you are not on file. The phone rings..."

That's part of the reason why your takes so long to fill, and after almost 20 years of this, a question I was never quite able to answer loomed larger and larger each day: "Why did I get into this profession?" Cranky customers whose only questions seem to involve their insurance co-pays. Pointless paperwork. People begging for early narcotic refills. Staff cuts. That was my workday. The strle to get people the medicine and information they needed seemed almost futile at times. Then one day I got the answer. It hit me like a ton of bricks while driving home one spring evening along the California coast. I was born again, but it had nothing to do with Jesus. It did have a lot to do with a little plastic motorcycle. And I did become the pharmacist who saved Christmas. I absolutely know now why I became a pharmacist.

I still don't know why your co-pay is so high.

The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant

The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant

Rainer Werner Fassbinder adapted his own play for this modern twist on The Women, the great all-female Hollywood classic of sex and social conventions in high society. Margit Carstensen is successful dress designer Petra, Irm Hermann her silent, obedient secretary/servant/Girl Friday Marlene (whom she alternately abuses and ignores), and Hanna Schygulla the callow, shallow young Karin, a seemingly naive blond beauty Petra treats as part protegee, part pet, until the calculating kitten turns on Petra. Michael Ballhaus's prowling camera finds Marlene silently hovering on the borders of Petra's dramas, looking on through doors and windows like an adoring lover from afar. Bouncing between catty melodrama and naked emotional need, it's a quintessentially Fassbinder portrait of doomed love, jealousy, and social taboos. The DVD features commentary by Fassbinder scholar Jane Shattuc, the early 1966 Fassbinder short films The City Tramp and The Little Chaos, the bonus documentary Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and filmographies. --Sean Axmaker

NTD TV’s Global Han Couture Competition a Stunner

NTD TV’s Global Han Couture Competition a Stunner

NEW YORK—Silk painted with lotuses, long trailing sashes, and royal brocade were some of the fine details on display at the first Global Han Couture Design Competition held at Manhattan's Prince George Ballroom on Sunday, Oct. 18.

The competition was part of a series of competitions held by New Tang Dynasty Television this year, including piano, violin, traditional Chinese dance, martial arts, and voice.

More even-paced than your average fashion show, several hours of eye-popping designs from over 50 contestants paraded down the catwalk. The designs ranged from familiar styles seen in traditional Chinese paintings—simple lines, broad panels and airy fabrics—to ones resembling those worn by characters in martial arts comic books.

The competition's guidelines were to “borrow the patterns in clothing of the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties...to create contemporary garments,” leaving the door wide open for a variety of styles and inspirations. But because the Western-Eastern combinations tended not to work, judges reverted to authenticity as their main judging criteria.

“Our selection process is designed this way because we want to use this to help guide the development of Han fashion down the line,” said judge Amy Li, who is an award-winning fashion designer trained in China. “We will be holding this competition in the future, we would like to see, in Chinese culture we have 5,000 years of fashion so we feel it's already very rich and there's a lot to draw upon already and we wanted to see a little bit more of that. There were some other pieces that were not as Asian and we felt that, having incorporated the western elements, even though it was nice in some cases, that it somehow doesn't match, so it detracted from the overall effect.”

Each contestant was allowed to submit several pieces in two categories: casual wear and formal wear. In addition to a trophy and certificates of awards, $10,000 cash prizes were rewarded to gold winners, $5,000 to silver winners, and $2,000 USD to bronze winners.

Liqing Chen from Taiwan, whose pieces featured scooping sleeves and shapes that virtually leaped out from a painting, won silver in the casual division.

“Ancient Chinese fashion was very elegant, simple yet bold,” Chen said. “Mine was not very fancy but you don’t need a lot with Han couture to make it beautiful.”

Amy Li commented on the pieces that won gold in the formal wear division. Its theme was “Moments.” “The evening wear gold winner, the theme was ‘moment’ and we felt that it captured a moment in time of traditional Chinese couture,” Li said. “It was again very beautiful and at the same time very authentic.”

Some members of the fashion industry were in the audience. Sandi Grant, a New York fashion show producer, found the show impressive.

“The different colors, I loved the colors, the sequins, the embroidery, done stitch by stitch, they’re geniuses,” she said.

Lavera Wright, a former model and fashion consultant, now trains young models and holds fashion shows for upcoming New York designers. “It’s different from regular fashion shows,” Wright said. “The models took the time to pause, they really wore those gowns – they didn’t just run across the stage. They were elegant and graceful. That’s the way I am and how I teach my girls.”
5,000 Years of Fashion

The Han clothing is designed based on an old saying, “being one with heaven and man.” The couture reflects on people’s respect and faith in gods at the time.

Clothes initially appeared in China around 2000 BCE, which ended the prehistoric state of people covering themselves with animal skins. Since then, people learned to observe their surroundings and incorporate those natural elements into their clothing. For instance, the sky was black; therefore their top clothing was black in color, as it should symbolize heaven. The earth was yellow, as the bottom clothing was dyed yellow in resemblance of the earth. A sash tied around the waist symbolized the balance man must strike while living between heaven and earth. The Chinese people expressed their faith in heaven and earth clearly in such manner through their intricate attire.

The ancient Chinese believed that gods would unveil the truth to them when they had a kind heart, where human beings could then attain wisdom and a prosperous life.

Jane Russell The French Line (Lloyd Bacon, 1954)

Jane Russell The French Line (Lloyd Bacon, 1954)

IN "The French Line," the new Jane Russell picture which hit the Criterion yesterday, the idea is that Miss Russell is a Texas oil heiress with so much wealth that any self-respecting gentleman wouldn't dream of marrying her. (This, in itself, is rediculous but for brevity's sake we'll let it slide.)
"It would be like marrying a corporation," one of her pious suitors says. And that is the cue to the whole picture. A corporation, indeed.
For it is the corporation aspect of Miss Russell that is persistently and monotonously emphasized to the concealment of any possible entertainment of a more imaginative sort in this film. Let a scene come in in which Miss Russell sits down aboard the liner Liberte to slop up some booze with Gilbert Roland as a great lover truly gone on her and immediately her noted corporation is permitted to get in the way of whatever pretensions to witty banter about a cure for seasickness the scene may have.
Or let Miss Russell pop out grandly at a fashion show in gay Paree to do what one would anticipate to be the modeling of a gown and she pops out instead in the sort of scanties that would go better at the Folies Bergere and does a "grind" to a song called "I'm Looking for Trouble" that is as decorative and uplifting as a burlesque turn.
There's no use pretending about this picture. It's a cheap, exhibitionistic thing in which even the elaboration of the feminine figure eventually becomes grotesque. It looks as though someone had the notion that a very low and rather tight bodice, continued through numerous costume changes, is worth more than anybody's script—which may be, indeed, if we are weighing it against this one, of Mary Loos and Richard Sale, who, to judge by the images in their writing, could be the kids of Anita and Chic.
In a fable that looks a faint stencil of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," touched up with smoking-room humor, "The French Line" uninterestingly tells of Miss Russell's trip to Europe in search of a broad-minded man—a man, that is, who will take her money along with her own sweet self. But the only man of any amusement turned up is the character that Arthur Hunnicutt plays—a lean shanked and bearded Texas-drawling yawr-doggone-tootin' type.
Mr. Roland, as the one she finally ties to, appears bored and casual, as he might be. And Mary McCarthy as a traveling companion is a poor substitute for Marilyn Monroe.
To say any more about the cheapness and obviousness of this R. K. O. film would be but to give it more attention. And that it most certainly does not deserve.

BOSLEY CROWTHER New York Times 15 May 1954

Womens Ankle Bracelets Pair in Silver 10.25 Inches

Ankle bracelets or anklets are indispensable to Indian jewelry and to Indian history. Since the prehistoric times, the Indians have had a penchant for elaborately adorning their bodies with jewelry. Silver, gold, gems, and stones defined the intricacy of Indian jewelry. Indian jewelry exhibits a wide variety of styles and ornaments for almost every part of the body. During the ancient times, people religiously adorned themselves in stunning rings, necklaces, and anklets made of metals and crude stones. As jewelry making techniques advanced, Indian jewelry become more refined with gold, silver, and semi-precious stones. Traditionally, the wearing of an anklet is an important Indian custom used to express marital status and integral to wedding garments. Today, the anklet has evolved into stylish statements that can be worn by anyone. There are two basic types of this exquisite foot jewelry, the stiff and the flexible. Stiff anklets are either fabricated or cast by shaping and hammering sheet metals into various shapes. The artisanal techniques of chiseling, engraving, threading, granulation, chain techniques, and wire work make this handmade jewelry an exceptional piece of fine art. More commonly referred to as pajeb or jhanjhar, this flexible variety of employing a close interlocking technique is further enhanced with enticing jingle bells. It has been said that there is no better music to a lover's ears than the seductive sound coming from the steps being taken by his beloved. This beautiful sound has been a constant subject in Indian poetry for several centuries now.

Luisa Via Roma’s concept is taken far and wide in an attempt to fine-tune its image and tactics specifically for the fertile and rapidly developing markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

With a focus on creating targeted brand awareness and legitimacy in all four markets, the project utilizes both online and offline tactics. Specificities and idiosyncrasies of each country are considered alongside cultural tendencies and attitudes towards internet usage to build an idea base and familiarity with each market. High-visibility projects and culturally appropriate forays into more traditional advertising, ultimately aimed at getting under the skin and capturing the affection of consumers in these markets, are intended to increase visits to its website and therefore drive sales.

Several of Luisa Via Roma’s most distinguishing features, such as “Get It First,” are emphasized as is its physical store in Florence, in order to establish an tangible and human link to the e-business. In addition, new concepts informed by the project’s research are proposed for each market.

With a rangefinder, it's light and compact and the images have a special magic to it... however, with this shot here, only an SLR will give you a preview (sorta) of the 'bokeh' through the viewfinder... Platinum Plated Cuff bracelets are purely decorative types of jewellery used in weddings and parties. Many people can not afford real gold and so many a time they take recourse to gold like costume fashion jewelry. These are made in classic and traditional designs in copper alloys like brass and bronze. These have no intrinsic values and extremely archaic, and elaborate forms have survived and are still made. Bangle bracelets exist in enormous variety all over India. Sometimes, unlike bangles, bracelets have an opening to facilitate putting them on and taking them off. Bangles made of a flat metal can vary in width from narrow to very broad cuff like forms. Other rigid bangles types may be made in two parts hinged together, and employ various kinds of fastenings, such as screws or movable pins.

Letchworth State Park - District #2 School

On Trout Pond Road in Letchworth State Park visitors will notice what appears to be an old fashioned one-room school house. Actually this building is a replica of the structure that William Pryor Letchworth designed and financed for the school district and it stands on the original site. It serves now as a warehouse for the park concessionaire. Back in 1873 William Pryor Letchworth proposed to build a school for the district and that he did. The school remained in use until 1934 and was known as District #2 School. In 1948 the building was sold at an auction and torn down by the purchaser who used it for lumber.
