I tried slicing some of my beautiful radish with a mandolin slicer and did the rest by hand. I'm afraid I ate the only perfect paper thin slice without getting a picture of it. This was the next best. They seem milder when sliced thinly.

La vita di Borodin

La vita di Borodin

The life of Borodin

the next time you listen to Borodin
remember he was just a chemist
who wrote music to relax;
his house was jammed with people:
students, artists, drunkards, bums,
and he never knew how to say: no.
the next time you listen to Borodin
remember his wife used his compositions
to line the cat boxes with
or to cover jars of sour milk;
she had asthma and insomnia
and fed him soft-boiled eggs
and when he wanted to cover his head
to shut out the sounds of the house
she only allowed him to use the sheet;
besides there was usually somebody
in his bed
(they slept separately when they slept
at all)
and since all the chairs
were usually taken
he often slept on the stairway
wrapped in an old shawl;
she told him when to cut his nails,
not to sing or whistle
or put too much lemon in his tea
or press it with a spoon;
Symphony #2, in B Minor
Prince Igor
On the Steppes of Central Asia
he could sleep only by putting a piece
of dark cloth over his eyes;
in 1887 he attended a dance
at the Medical Academy
dressed in a merrymaking national costume;
at last he seemed exceptionally gay
and when he fell to the floor,
they thought he was clowning.
the next time you listen to Borodin,
remember …

(Charles Bukowski)

La vita di Borodin

La prossima volta che ascolti Borodin
ricorda che era solo un farmacista
che scriveva musica per distrarsi;
la sua casa era piena di gente:
studenti, artisti, barboni, ubriaconi,
e lui non sapeva mai dire di no.
la prossima volta che ascolti Borodin
ricorda che sua moglie usava le sue composizioni
per foderare la cuccia del gatto
o coprire i vasi di latte acido;
aveva l'asma e l'insonnia
e gli dava da mangiare uova a la coque
e quando lui voleva coprirsi la testa
per non sentire i rumori della casa
gli lasciava usare soltanto il lenzuolo;
per giunta c'era sempre qualcuno
nel suo letto
(dormivano separati quando proprio
dormivano)
e siccome tutte le sedie
erano sempre occupate
spesso lui dormiva sulle scale
avvolto in un vecchio scialle;
era lei a dirgli di tagliarsi le unghie,
di non cantare o fischiare
di non mettere troppo limone nel te
di non schiacciarlo col cucchiaino;

Sinfonia n.2 in si minore
Il principe Igor
Nelle steppe dell'Asia centrale
riusciva a dormire solo mettendosi
un pezzo di stoffa scura sopra gli occhi;
nel 1887 partecipo a un ballo
all'Accademia di medicina
indossando un allegro costume nazionale;
sembrava finalmente di un'insolita gaiezza
e quando cadde sul pavimento,
pensarono che volesse fare il pagliaccio.
la prossima volta che ascolti Borodin,
ricorda...

Blood, Sweat & Tears

Blood, Sweat & Tears

American music group, formed in 1967 in New York City. It fuses rock, blues, pop music, horn arrangements and jazz improvisation into a hybrid that came to be known as "jazz-rock". Unlike "jazz fusion" or simply "fusion", which tended toward virtuostic displays of instrumental facility and some experimentation with electric instruments, Blood, Sweat & Tears' sound merged the varied stylings of rock, pop and R&B/soul music with big band coupled with "combo" (small ensemble) jazz.

Help - I've been tagged!

Help - I've been tagged!

16 things about me

1. I was born in Glasgow in 1955. Scottish, European, British even - don't call me English! As an "honorary Portuguese" I get to vote in local and Europpean elections (and I do) but not for the parliament or the president. Not fair!

2. I'm married to Diana, my companion for the last 19 happy years.

3. I don't have children, but spend most of my working week teaching English to other people's kids. I think this helps me stay young.

4. I really enjoy teaching kids, especially in the 10-12 age group. And some former students are now grown up and still friends.

5. At other times I think they put years on me!

6. Things with strings! I love guitars, banjos, mandolins, cavaquinhos and the like. I'll never be a great player but it's given me a lot of pleasure and made friends.

7. Guitar gurus - Ry Cooder and Stefan Grossman have taught me a lot. I love Jimi Hendrix (playing as I write), Buddy Guy, the Kings (BB, Albert and Freddie) and a number of folk and blues players alive or dead.

8. I've kind of grown out of pop and rock music. What do Ilisten to? Blues, Jazz, Folk; music from Greece and the Balkans; Gypsy music from all parts; Cuban and other Latin music; African music . . . there's a whole world out there! I confess to preferring Lisbon fado to that of Coimbra.

9. I read a lot - usually with a work of fiction and one of non-fiction on the go at the same time. At the the moment - Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie (re-reading) and (just finished) a biography of George Orwell.

10. Favourite writers (dead): Robert Burns, James Joyce, RL Stevenson, Dickens, Eca de Queiroz (deserves to be world-famous!), Anthony Burgess . . .

11. Favourite writers (alive): William boyd, Ian McEwan, Jose Saramago, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende and lots more.

12. Films - two idiosyncratic favourites: Nic Roeg's psychological horror-thriller "Don't Look Now" and Billy Wilder's "Some Like it Hot" ( I have most of the dialogue by heart!)

13. I love cooking. My mother inspired me at an early age, and my first teaching job was in Italy, where lots of people wanted to teach me the ONLY way to make risotto, etc. . . . (but it was always different). I still cook lots of Italian food.

14. I love walking and the outdoors. In the holidays I prefer the mountains to the beach. Every weekend we try to escape to the countryside, and living in Coimbra its not too difficult.

15. I love to travel whenever possible. I'm a great fan of islands - Madeira, Azores, Canarias, Cabo Verde, S. Tome . . . Fell in love with Cuba some years ago, especially Havana and the countryside around Vinales. Didn't have digital camera in those days! There are still so many places to discover.

16. Thanks to Flickr for opening up the world a bit more and introducing me to new friends across the world!

16 things about me, as I was tagged by Rose and several other friends:
1. I studied with the Open University for my degree;
2. I play guitar, and used to play in pubs and clubs in and around London. I have also played various other instruments, including mandolin, concertina, 5-string banjo, and Appalachian dulcimer;
3. I was divorced before I met Rose, and went through a breakdown;
4. My favourite ever TV program is Kung Fu, starring David Carradine;
5. I have a black belt in karate, and used to instruct;
6. I love photography - having had a plastic Coronet roll-film camera in my childhood (thanks to my Uncle Phil), I began "serious" photography with a Zenit SLR in the early 70's (I still love heavy cameras!);
7. I have run several half-marathons (but not for some years now); now I love walking;
8. My father was a manic depressive and a boxer - I miss him;
9. I love all dogs, but I think Jack Russells are the best dogs in the world;
10. I have lived and worked abroad in France and Germany, and I love trying to learn foreign languages, although I am not as good as when I was younger;
11. I did not learn to drive until I was 42;
12. I am an IT Support Engineer by trade;
13. I love drawing and painting, although my eyesight is deteriorating a lot;
14. I would love to own a printing press for block prints;
15. I would love to write a book;
16. I love my partner Rose, my sons Peter and Daniel, Rose's children Duncan and Verity, our dog, Terence, and Trevor the Tortoise : )

Glasgow Music Venues: Celtic Connections 12 - The Universal

Glasgow Music Venues: Celtic Connections 12 - The Universal

Address: 57-59 Sauchiehall Lane, Glasgow.
Dates: 2002 to date.
Former warehouse. Now Bar/Restaurant/Club.
Capacity: 120.

The Universal was a festival venue between 2006 and 2010. Over 10 nights there was a “Songs of Scotland” series, organised in the early years by region (which I preferred) and then by theme e.g. courtship, seafaring, food. It is greatly missed. In a festival where instrumental music is often to the fore, it was good to hear some unaccompanied traditional singing. Apparently it came to an end because the Universal could not be used, but I find it hard to believe that a similar room above a pub could not be found in Glasgow. Perhaps the organisers see the events at the CCA and the Art Club as suitable replacements.

Amongst the singers I heard at the Univeral were Geordie Murison (2006), Mairi MacInnes (2007), Joe Aitken (2007), Fiona MacKenzie (the one from Morayshire) (2007), Sheena Wellington (20070, Alistair Hulett (2008), Anne Lorne Gillies (2008) and Jock Duncan (2010).

SWEET!!!

SWEET!!!

so i uploaded this photo not cuz its really awesome but to say that this kid is awesome. I have no idea who he is. All i know is that he is from Portland and the plays really good music. First off he played an electric guitar through a bass cab which gave it a unique sound. Then after looping a few licks he would run over to the drum set and lay down some dank beats. This was without a doubt my favorite instrumental music i have seen live.

Empirical - Lewis Wright, vibes; Nathaniel Facey, alto sax; Tom Farmer, bass; Shane Forbes, drums.

Empirical, a band of five young unknowns, burst onto the jazz scene in 2007 their album becoming the Jazzwise CD of the year and winning a number of awards and huge acclaim for their live appearances playing post bop with a clear Ornette Coleman influence. Three members of the band moved on in 2008 and the band reformed as a quartet bringing in vibes player Lewis Wright and bassist Tom Farmer.

Their second album shows the strength of the new band being a tribute to Eric Dolphy mixing Dolphy compositions from his 'Out to Lunch' CD and their own original compositions.

"When they emerged in 2007 Empirical made bigger waves and more column inches than any UK jazz ensemble since Courtney Pine's early bands. Their debut album swept across contemporary styles, including funk, gospel and R&B, although the motor that ran it was fuelled by classic bebop, particularly its ecstatic Art Blakey derivatives. In this session the American jazz tradition still energises Empirical, in a revised line-up in which the excellent Nathaniel Facey's alto sax remains dominant but is now in a more laid back dialogue with Lewis Wright's vibraphone. Facey's fascination with the short lived and often overlooked sax and bass clarinet visionary Eric Dolphy shapes the set."

Teamwork

Samantha works to keep the rest of the staff informed of the ongoings in the Children s Department. She utilizes the Monday meetings for announcements and upcoming event description. She keeps other staff informed of department details so that proper press releases and calendar changes can be made.

Samantha has worked with the Shelving Assistants and Circulation Staff in weeding projects and library betterment projects. She does not leave collection maintenance to the Shelving Assistants. In her busy schedule, she makes time to roam the stacks, straighten up, decorate the end caps and oversee usage and circulation trends. She plans with Jennifer and Carol whenever assistance is needed. If Samantha is out unexpectedly, her planning skills prevail. If Carol and Jennifer step in to lead a story time, they can walk over to Samantha s storage area and pluck a ready-made program! Her planning skills lessen the worry of those that are called upon to cover in an emergency!

Innovation

Samantha also enriches her own story time with her musical skills and her creative use of photography. She brings different unconventional instruments to programs, e.g. a strumstick and a dulcilyn. She arrived at the library with a treasure trove of skills and uses them often. She is also fearless in dreaming! She has a defined vision for the Northwest Children's Department.

We work to implement that where and whenever possible. We have many changes in the works that have be initiated via discussions between Samantha, myself and our Friends of the Library. We are painting, purchasing storage, creating a well-defined teen space, updating the children s furniture and increasing the amount of programming during the school year and during the Summer Reading Program.

Job Performance

Stellar! Samantha s programs are excellently organized, excellently planned, excellently implemented and joyously performed! Samantha is one of the best Children s Librarians in the county. She is dedicated, loves her job and still remains easy-going while being highly-productive. She runs both the Children s Department and Teen programming. Her weekly schedule includes, but is not limited to teen programming, back-to-back Toddler Times, Baby Book time, back-to-back Story Times, crafts and special event programming.

Also, Summer Reading is planned far in advance. The performers for SRP 2008 are booked and the budget is planned and approved. It has been done since mid-January. I have little doubt that my first summer at NW will be phenomenal due to Samantha s planning skills. In 2006, our SRP enrollment was 750 participants. In 2007, Samantha took over SRP and our numbers almost doubled and grew to 1300. This year we are planning for 1500-1800 enrollments.

Leadership

Samantha guides local high school students in the presentation of a monthly Book Club Story Time. She mentors the high schoolers to put on a program and craft on select Saturdays during the month for the younger children. While this is not the easiest way to develop a program, the lessons and benefits to both the teens and the children are the results of Samantha s leadership.

The teens learn to become better leaders under her guidance, the children are mentored by the teens and, ultimately, the programs are really enjoyed by the patrons. This three-tiered process enables greater learning opportunities for all those involved.

Customer Service

When I started at Northwest prior to even meeting Samantha, I walked through Children s and was impressed by the collection. One look and you can tell that the weeding, organizing and layout was done with care and attention. While she did not initially have the resources immediately available to her, she still proceeded with her vision. We have done many changes in the last four months including the rearrangement of the long-standing and inefficient computer configuration in the Children s Area. If Samantha is out, the patrons ask When is she coming back? Where is Samantha? Samantha’s still here, right? The impact her work has had on the parents of the children is also irreplaceable. Positive patron comments speaking to the quality programming are always abundant and available. The children look for Ms. Samantha and she is definitely their advocate. Samantha has also made the Children s area come alive with book displays, end cap decorations, bulletin boards and assiduous dedication!

Introduce Yourself (25/365)

Introduce Yourself (25/365)

Hello there. I realised today I never have formally introduced myself to flickr, so for anyone that looks at my stream and my fellow project365-ers, here are thirteen relatively disjointed points about myself on the 13th of August

1. My name's Robert, but since I was 15 I've insisted that people call me Bob. Now I'm 20, I can't decide which one I prefer.

2. I've learnt (or rather, have had lessons for) six musical instruments in my life, though I'd be hard pressed to remember how to play most of them.

3. I like shoes, sweatbands, belt buckles and sunglasses. The small things that you wear.

4. I've only ever had two girlfriends. Though I was once hit on by three different guys in the space of one week. Kind of flattering, I guess?

5. I'm convinced that the reason I have to wear glasses is because a young greek boy threw a stone in my eye when I was younger

6. I sometimes plan what i'm going to say in advance, for maximum impact.

7. I don't need much sleep. But put me in a moving vehicle and I will pass out quicker than you can open a can of Red Bull

8. I always feel like I'm being judged whenever I go into Comic Book Stores. Yes, I like Tim Burton, Jhonen Vasquez, H.R Giger and The Dark Tower, No, I don't like Superman. I'm not going to apologise.

9. I often judge too quickly whether I'm going to like a person or not.

10. I secretly want to be Josh Homme

11. I weigh 13 stone, 10. I'm not happy with my size and I never really have been, but from today I am going on some sort of exercise/healthy eating thing.

12. When I grow up, I want to be a wildlife photographer.

13. I am grateful to have been so lucky in life and to be where I am today.

=)
