Day 76 - Micro Machines (series)
When it comes to the Micro Machines series. I immediately think back to the SNES and Megadrive days.
Most likely due to the fact it was those consoles I owned versions of this game on. Although in Micro Machines case I definitely have to give the edge to the Megadrive versions, simply for the J-Cart's. Which basically combined both the game and a 4 player multi-tap in one package for you. In fact, outside of the arcades, Micro Machines was the first game I personally ever played that was more than 2 players.
Micro Machines was a dream game to me, and many kids my age back in the day though. Set in real world locations such as Kitchen tables, bathrooms, back gardens, living rooms, pool halls, etc...not to mention the fact "Micro Machines" had there own line of toy cars you could buy from toy stores and own at home, it just brought to life those childish playtime moments that most guys (and some girls) had of racing our toy cars around our houses and such.
Made by the UK studio "Codemasters", whom have since gone on to have quite a reputation for making racing games (Toca, Colin McRae/ DiRT, Fuel, recent F1 games, Race Driver. The series kind of got a bit overplayed as we moved from the 16 bit era, and thus I believe a lot of people either lost love for the series, or just grew up after it's prime and never "got it", but I'd definitely like to see Micro Machines make a comeback as a downloadable game for the likes of PSN/ XBLA, but then again there is something more homely about digging out the Megadrive and playing it as I did as a kid.
Shout outs to Micro Maniacs on PS1 also ^_^ ¦
If you do want a Micro Machines fix I can definitely recommend "TnT Racers on XBLA for 800points" as that's definitely more of the same (and has that same "be the first one to get an edge forward on the track so that you're pushing opponents off the screen" type gameplay that Micro Machines was all about.
