NEXT DAY PHOTO PRINTING : NEXT DAY

PRINTS!
I ordered a bunch of stuff from mpix.com and I am totally thrilled with the results. Ordered Sunday night late and did next day shipping (very reasonable) and they arrived this morning! Everything looks great! I think I will probably see if they have printer color profiles so I can color correct myself and send them over. On the framed image it came out looking ever so slightly color corrected instead of holding all of the green tint I originally put into the edit. Overall, nice. On the other 4 images the color looks PERFECT.
Print for Auction
Someone (Hi, Martha!) suggested this would be a great item to put in the Bloom! Auction. It feels kinda strange to see this print sharing display space with $2000+ sculptures and other fantastic pieces of art and craftsmanship.
I'm not sure what it went for because we were in Galena on the day of the auction. Someone said they heard a bid call at $80, but they weren't sure if that was a high bid or call for next bid so not sure how it ended.

Homemade Camera Photo
This is a 5x7 photo from a camera that I made and used a few times. It was made mostly of cardboard and it was fixed focus and had no viewfinder but the negative was 5x7 inches and that is impressive. The camera used an old back from and 8x10 camera to convert 8x10 to use 5x7 holders and the lens was from a Graphlex. The lens was designed to cover 4x5 but it seemed like it could cover 5x7 if stopped down to F16 or F22. The dark upper right corner is not due to a lack of lens coverage but only because the camera was braced on the lower rail of a fence and the corner is part of the upper rail. there is a lack of sharpness at the right hand side but it's not so bad. I should have worked with the camera more before dissassembling it.
Cardboard City
When we started preparing for Elliette's arrival last October, our cardboard intake absolutely exploded. From Ikea, to Amazon.com, our cardboard pile grew daily.
Minneapolis has very strict rules regarding cardboard recycling, so I waited all winter before tackling the Cardboard Beast.
This was what we ended up with...

This is the Mentone Beach water tower. The nearest ocean beach is 66.5 miles away (31st Street, Newport Beach), according to Google Maps. The nearest lake beach (Highway 173 and A Lane, Lake Arrowhead) is 29.2 miles away.
I still haven't got the hang of geotagging my photos yet. The GPS info in the EXIF data shows 33°59'5.353"N 117°8'27.087"W. Google Earth shows the point where I was standing at 34°4'0.01"N 117°8'11.13"W. The EXIF info is in San Timoteo Canyon. I drove through San Timoteo Canyon on my way home, so maybe I'm off due to daylight savings time or something like that.
Update: I was trying a program called Download Pro. I set the time in Download Pro to -7:00 from UTC instead of local time, since we are on Daylight Savings Time right now. The I re-geotagged the photos and the new photo has a location of 34°4'0.442"N 117°8'11.193"W, a difference of 0.432 seconds of arc on the latitude, and a difference of 0.063 seconds of arc on the longitude. That's close enough.

Thomas W. Plummer
Company C, 6th Wisconsin Infantry
History of Allen and Woodson Counties, Kansas: embellished with portraits of well known people of these counties, with biographies of our representative citizens, cuts of public buildings and a map of each county / Edited and Compiled by L. Wallace Duncan and Chas. F. Scott. Iola Registers, Printers and Binders, Iola, Kan.: 1901
THOMAS W. PLUMMER.
THOMAS W. PLUMMER, whose business activities have largely connected him with the substantial improvement and upbuilding of the west, has for sixteen years engaged in handling real estate in Yates Center and is one of the well known and reliable business men of the city. He is a native of Lincolnshire, England, born July 8, 1839, but since early youth has been a resident of this republic. His father, John B. Plummer, was also a native of the "Merrie Isle" and there married Mary E. Wilkinson. He was a farmer by occupation and in 1846 he came with his family to the United States, locating in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. where he resided until 1859, when he went to Prairie du Chien, that state, there spending his remaining days, his death occurring in 1890, when he had reached the ripe age of four score years. In his family were sixteen children, nine of whom are yet living: Emma, now Mrs. Shipman, a widow, of New York city; Thomas W., of this review; John W., who resides in Wilmington, North Carolina; Mary, wife of Dr. Stiger, of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; Ellen, wfe[sic] of George M. Rising, of Minneapolis, Mnnesota;[sic] Edward, of Augusta, Wisconsin; Harry W., of San Francisco, California, and Sarah W., wife of M. J. Scanlon, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and John W. Plummer, of Wilmington, North Carolina.
Thomas W. Plummer was but seven years of age when he bade adieu to the land of his birth and came with his parents to the new world, he pursued a common school education in Wisconsin and at the age of seventeen years left the parental home, going into the pineries where he was engaged in cutting, sawing and hauling logs for two years. On the expiration of that period he went to Grand Raven, Michigan, and worked on the construction of the Milwaukee & Grand Haven Railroad for two years, acting as time-keeper and book-keeper for tthe[sic] contractor. In the meantime his parents had removed to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and he there joined them, being at that place at the time of the inauguration of the Civil war. He had watched with interest the disturbance in the South and the growth of the spirit of rebellion and resolved that if an attempt at secession was made he would strike a blow for the defense of the Union. Accordingly, in April, 1861, he enlisted in Company C, Sixth Wisconsin infantry, under Colonel Lysander Cutler, and was mustered into service at Madison, Wisconsin, on the 16th of July, the regiment being attached to the Army of the Potomac at Washington, where he remained until the spring of 1862, with McClellan's forces. He then went South with General McDowell's army and was in the engagements at Slaughter Mine and Gainesville, was also in the second battle of Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Fitzhugh Crossing, Chancellorsville, Mine Run and the Wilderness, after which his company went up the James river to Petersburg. Mr. Plummer was commissioned second lieutenant at Arlington Heights was made first lieutenant and was promoted captain on the Potomac river just before the engagement at Chancellorsville, while in 1864 he was breveted major and commanded his regiment a part of the time.
Major Plummer left the army on the 16th day of July, 1864, and returned to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, where he engaged in the stock business for some time. His residence in that city covered altogther an aggregate of fourteen years. On leaving there he entered the service of the Union Pacific Railroad Company, then constructing its line, being employed as bridge foreman. He followed the line out to Ogden, Utah, and then returned to do bridge work, in the capacity of
foreman, on the St. Paul & Duluth Railroad, being thus engaged for more than a year. He next went to the Red River of the North and for a time followed the business of trading with the Indians, after which, he came to Kansas, locating in Woodson County, where he carried on farming until 1876. That year witnessed his removal to Texas and locating near Dallas, he furnished wood and ties, under contract to the T. & P. R. R. Co. and Cotton Belt Railroad Company. In 1881 he returned to Woodson County, where he again engaged in farming for two years and then sold his land and took up his abode in Yates Center, where for sixteen years he has conducted real estate transactions, handling some valuable property. He has a comprehensive knowledge of realty values and of favorable locations, and is thus competent to advise his clients to their best advantage.
Major Plummer was married in Woodson County in December, 1878, to Miss Mary F. Hamilton,

Wacom Graphire3 4x5 USB Tablet (Graphite Gray, CTE430GR)
All of Wacom's tablets are pressure sensitive-- they literally feel the full range of pressure from the pen on the tablet. With a pressure-sensitive tool, such as Photoshop's Rubber Stamp or History brush or any Painter brush, you get unparalleled control. Press hard, and you get a more opaque clone, a fatter paintbrush, a darker stroke. Press lighter, and you have a transparent clone, a thin brush, a gentle stroke of color. It's intuitive, because it's how tools work in the real world. If you spend any time at all creating and working with images on a computer, a pen tablet will make you faster. You can go from light to dark, thin to thick, or opaque to transparent in one pressure-sensitive stroke. The pen's absolute positioning is also faster than a mouse, allowing you to access every area of your screen without detours.

Junkadelic light bulb
This is a photo of a light bulb that was in a mexican restaurant I went to yesterday in Nakameguro. (Junkadelic, which happens to be a pretty good Mexican restaurant by Japan standards) I took a few photos of this lightbulb trying to get the look I was looking for, but I couldn't get the filament and lamp shade to both look how I wanted in the same photo, so this is actually the result of a little bit of transparency and editing with GIMP. (Like Photoshop, only free and not quite as fully featured.) My editing skills are pretty non-existent, but this is the kind of look I was trying to get. Both photos used in this image are straight out of the camera.
(The two images are light bulb (0853) and light bulb (0854) if anyone wants to try to do a better job!)
Nothing like a good book...
Despeckled a bit using The GIMP because for some reason the original was quite noisy...

Many photos were taken of me from birth to 5, and almost no one until after the war at around 11 - by decision of my parents because persecutions to have no photo memories of me that could put me in danger - also they never told me openly why they have done it.
Then, suddenly, after the war, they took me to a photographer in our town asking many photos.
I think, this is one of them, also it could be also by someone from our family - the original is a tiny square image, linked with another small square image where I am with my mother.

My Artist's Way Creativity Group*
THE ARTIST'S WAY BASIC PRINCIPLES (if you are unfamiliar) may be read at the bottom of this post.
*******************************************************************************************
Stranger that I was, Margie (far left) contacted me and invited me into a group she was forming in 2003. It was her second Artist's Way study group. Due to a job, we were newly relocated and living (temporarily) in a two bedroom apartment.
These women, all of retirement age when I was of working age, opened their hearts to me, a stranger ... in my 40s. (Over years, they've taught me more than one can imagine about a vibrant retirement, but I'm getting ahead of the story.)
In the photo are [left to right]: Margie: Elsa, Maggie, Pat, Dorothy and Mary. At our first meetings there was another woman (very much younger, who sadly didn't stay and missed a lot) and a woman named Dolly, a writer, who now has Alzheimer ’s disease. Also, Patricia and Carol who are part of our group, but missed this holiday celebration.
The initial invitation Margie extended struck another "mysterious" chord with me: For home on my shelf, I'd had "The Artist's Way" book by Julia Cameron for years. I'd scanned it all and read parts in depth.
It's not enough to own a book; it's not enough to read a book. It takes "special chemistry" for people's lives to change at a deep level.
So as you may have guessed, it didn't "take" in my spirit until this group of strangers opened it up for me by allowing me to listen to their sharings and giving me their kindness, hospitality and at times, their love . . . particularly, one particular member, Pat.
My friend Pat (third from the right) died one year ago this month from lung cancer. It all happened very fast. She was my supporter, my phone pal and a confident on many subjects that went far beyond our Creativity Group. She stood by me through many things and was another wonderful blessing in my life who has passed this year.
All of these women bring their own special world view; most of group have had spent their professional life connected to being educators. They ALL care about children (and I'm fairly sure understand why I photograph Dora the Explorer and put messages to children in my photostream).
Beyond the majority having education connections, post-retirement, we now have writers, painters, a photographer, children's book writer for her own family, creative cooks . . . things I don't even know about . . . they are all just creative lovers of life.
Getting them together, in theory, involves a meeting once a month. However, as Margie put it perfectly, gathering these busy, creative women is "like herding ants".
We don't live in the same neighborhood (they live near each other... I live far away). But I don't open Julia Cameron's books without thinking of them and feeling grateful for the ways I've grown courageous because of their opening their homes, their lives and their dreams to me . . . a stranger who in many ways doesn't quite "fit" . . . age, background, life story, etc. Still, there's a connection, a bond that is unique for me with this group.
The Artist's Way book by Julia Cameron espouses a certain philosophy. You may agree or disagree with it.
Other people's opinions of the Artist's Way are not my concern at all. It's theirs.
What is mine is "the walk". I "walk the walk" of the Artist's Way right here on Flickr. In fact, I can say that the Artist's Way and a Graphic Designer friend (who also studied The Artist's Way) . . . (spiced by seasonings from another study group in 2008) are completely responsible for my trying my hand at art photography and now photo-blogging.
These women support one another, love one another and are COMMITTED to one another.
What a gift I have been given . . . even if I do not live near them, don't match them and don't get to drop in to every meeting they host. Still they are mine and my friends and my INSPIRATION to live out "The Artist's Way" book in my life.
There have been other groups, but "the heart" must be right for the bond to last. I have other "Artist's Way" friends, but not like this group!
And yes, at this anniversary, I do miss my friend Pat's participation in the group . . . her stories of her family, grandchildren and all the wonderful creative things she use to share with me and with anyone who was interested.
But I know that the one thing she would encourage me to do is march right on ~ creatively ~ right though the center of life!
So here I am . . . marching away, the banner held high, sharing with all of you, my newest Flickr friends!
Thank you Julia Cameron and "The Artist's Way".
Thank you, Pat . . . and Dolly. Your contributions are both missed.
Thank you remaining Creativity Group!
May you, dear Flickr Friends, be blessed with as rich a fortune - having nothing to do with wealth - as I've bee
UNHCR News Story: Q&A: Alexander McCall Smith's wish for Darfur

Q&A: Alexander McCall Smith's wish for Darfur
LONDON, United Kingdom, July 7 (UNHCR) – Mma Ramotswe, Isabel Dalhousie and the eccentric inhabitants of the Corduroy Mansions have become much-loved literary characters for millions of readers worldwide. Now their creator, best-selling British novelist Alexander McCall Smith, has become one of 18 acclaimed authors helping to ensure that children living in refugee camps can also enjoy the pleasures of reading. The writers have each contributed a short story to a collection entitled "What You Wish For" and organized by the Book Wish Foundation. All of the proceeds will be donated to UNHCR to build libraries in camps housing more than quarter-of-a-million refugees displaced by the conflict in Darfur. McCall Smith, who is best known for "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," spoke recently with UNHCR's Laura Padoan about "The Strange Story of Bobby Box," his contribution to the collection, and why he believes that books are vital to our well-being. Excerpts from the interview:
Why did you think it was important to support this project?
I think there's the general importance of supporting people in need and facing often pretty cataclysmic disasters in their life. And this group of refugees is, I think, particularly deserving of support because what they have suffered is particularly acute. So, generally speaking, we should do what we can to help people in need, and refugees are very much in that category.
Can you give readers a preview of "The Strange Story of Bobby Box"?
"The Strange Story of Bobby Box" is intended for younger readers. It's the story of a boy who has a really rather remarkable life, a life which starts oddly and involves a certain amount of deprivation and suffering before things turn out well. He's the victim of cruelty and he has rather a tough time, but he's a bit of a survivor and things work out rather well for him at the end. So the story might perhaps tell the younger reader that things can be difficult, but it's always possible that they will sort themselves out or one will find what one's looking for in this life.
Bobby Box is a boy who finds what he's looking for, which is a home, and that's the general lesson in it. But children don't want to be preached at, so it's meant to be an exciting story of a boy who succeeds against the odds and, in particular, ends up working in a circus . . . When we're young, we all entertain at some point the idea of running away with the circus, and he does, but of course it doesn't quite work out as he'd hoped.
Are there any parallels between Bobby Box and refugee children?
If you look at what refugee children have to put up with, yes there would be parallels. I think that someone in that position has their whole world turned upside down in many cases. Their education is interrupted and they have to cope with very, very difficult circumstances. So, yes, I think there's a fairly obvious parallel. But I think that young readers don't necessarily grasp that there are children who have a tough time and lose all their possessions and end up living in a foreign country – they don't necessarily understand what's entailed in that. So I think that if you tell a story about a fairly vivid childhood or a child who has had that happen, you can do it in a way that gets that message across a bit better.
The book's proceeds will fund a library in a refugee camp in Chad. UNHCR and other agencies provide food, shelter and water to refugees. Do you think that books are also important for people living in refugee camps?
Oh tremendously. I should imagine that books for many people in difficult circumstances provide an escape from the grim reality of their lives. But they also give people an opportunity to pursue their education, to remain in touch with the outside world. Books must be really important in those circumstances. If you look at a charity in the United Kingdom called Book Aid International, that's a wonderful, wonderful thing. They send half-a-million books over from the UK to African countries, and these books are an absolute lifeline. So I think books must make life much more bearable.
Darfur is a very different place from the Botswana that you describe in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency." Do you feel a need to present a different image of Africa to the one we read about in newspapers and see on TV?
Yes, I think I do. Because, while I recognize that awful things have happened in many African countries and that Africa seems to have had more than its fair share of humanitarian disasters, I think it's also important that people should realize that there's another side to Africa, that there's a very positive side to Africa and that's the side which I portray in my Botswana books. I think that it's a great pity if we see

New Photo Mosaic
- An arrangement of photos that are cropped.
- In the field of photographic imaging, a photographic mosaic (also known under the term Photomosaic, a portmanteau of photo and mosaic, trademarked by ) is a picture (usually a photograph) that has been divided into (usually equal sized) rectangular sections, each of which is replaced with
- a number of overlapping photographs glued together to provide continuous coverage of a large area. Aerial photographic mosaics are used in the production of modern topographic maps.
Cat mosaic house, Ixelles - Elsene, Brussels, Belgium, no. 2
Beautiful mosaic of cats, gracing the front of a classic Brussels city townhouse. Very charming buidling that one happens upon in Brussels' Ixelles - Elsene neighbourhood (Brussels is bilingual, with street and place names in both French and Dutch).
The Belgian capital, Brussels, is a city of many small architectural delights on its older private residences, especially on the fin-de-siecle homes of the Art Nouveau era.
A cozy, uncrowded and much less developed city than Paris, Brussels truly retains an Art Nouveau feel, with many homes having whimsical permanent decorations in the Art Nouveau spirit.
These are photos from the daily life of writer and political refugee from the US, Dr Les (Leslie) Sachs - photos documenting my new beloved home city of Brussels, Belgium, my life among the people and Kingdom who have given me safety in the face of the threats to destroy me. Brussels has a noble history of providing a safe haven to other dissident refugee writers, such as Victor Hugo, Karl Marx, Charles Baudelaire, and Alexandre Dumas, and I shall forever be grateful that Brussels and Belgium have helped to protect my own life as well.
(To read about the efforts to silence me and my journalism, the attacks on me, the smears and the threats, see the website by European journalists "About Les Sachs" linked in my profile, and press articles such as "Two EU Writers Under Threat of Murder: Roberto Saviano and Dr Les Sachs".)
If you have read the story of how I narrowly escaped from the threats to murder me in North America, you know that my greatest grief is that, in order to save my own life, I had to leave behind my dear elderly blind cat - Miss Kitty, my loyal companion of more than a decade. In the hands of Canadian friends, my little blind girl paced her room and waited for me, for a few days past exactly one year; and then she died without ever seeing me again, without ever again hearing my voice, or ever again having my touch upon her fur. - I shall grieve for her to the day I die. - Miss Kitty was white in colour, just like one of the cats on this mosaic.
God bless you, Miss Kitty, my little girl, I will see you one day in heaven.

Josh Hurrell | July 2011
It's been a while since i've taken any photos i've been really proud of. It's been a while since i've put so much effort into my own photos when shooting and in post production.
I owe this all to my job with Simon Lipman. He's a Fashion photographer based in London and i'm working as a full time assistant. It's giving me the chance to really understand how to light, how to retouch, how to deal with clients, how to really focus your mind as a photographer I guess, and I've never really had that before.
So these shots were taken at midnight. Josh and I headed out with Lewis on saturday after having a few beers. It cost too much to go out, so we decided to set up my lights and hit the streets. These were by far the best 2 of Josh, and i've got a few of Lewis that will definitely be up here too.
Just pleased to be shooting again.
Off...
to London for a chat about a job and a speaking engagement at that church... We shall return sometime Monday we trust! Hope you have a great weekend...
(We won't really be flying the 90 miles to London but catching a coach - planes though are much more glamourous LOL)
Another old photo retouched, rejuvenated and uploaded... They keep falling off! LOL

93/365: somewhere to hide
I am a total disaster today. The only thing I want is to go to hell and hide there for a bit as I don't have elsewhere to hide. I forgot my mobile phone at home and made everyone freak out. They were so worried which makes me think if I look that depressed. I'm tired and I look terrible, my brain doesn't work, I even forgot to eat today. Traffic was terrible, I managed to get home in 2 hours. I bumped into someone I really don't want to see etc...The only good thing about today is that my webpage design is accepted!
Random Fact: I want to swear constantly.

"This photo was taken 3/20/2011 on the apron of the A yard. The LRV in the background is an SD100. The group is PAW’s, which is an organization to raise, train, and place assistance dogs with owners with special needs. This group was mixed with veteran working dogs and dogs in training. The Training Team and the current student Train Operator class, coupled with the PAW’s trainers, worked to help the dogs become acquainted with boarding and alighting the three different LRVs, both through the doors and to be boarded on the S/D lift. In this particular photo this 'puppy in training' was not too sure of going up on the lift! But with some coxing and patience, by the end of the day he was a champ!!! What a great day!"

Free Gaza protest.
I would estimate the crowed between 750 and a thousand for this protest. It was truly great to see such a diverse group show up, especially the Jews against the occupation. The march went up 6th Ave from Greeley Park to Bryant Park on 42nd St. where it ended in the typical fashion in a pen. The crowed chanted "free free Gaza now" and was overall very upbeat with the exception of a few words being exchanged with an angry young Jewish man who insisted "Israel was only defending itself."
As an American I feel the need to speak out on this issue for a number of reasons. The most obvious is Americas public, undying and unquestioning support for the Zionist regime. The other big reason is the support the mainstream media gives Israel, not only by journalists, editors and opinion talking heads but in subtler ways with language and photos. Contrary to these aforementioned issues many Americans do not support the Zionist movement and see the mess Israel has created with the urging of western powers. Many assume this is because Israel has so much influence in the American political system but I think that’s only a small part of us support for the Zionists. I think the larger issue is that Israel is a proxy for the US, it serves as a watchdog in a vast sea of sand filled with “hostile” Muslim nations. It acts as a proxy when dealing with countries like Iran and Syria by bombing suspected nuclear sites.
Just today I was listening to Meet The Press, its a news program that airs on Sundays here in the states. One of the guests was Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. When pressed on the issue of civilian casualties Reid promptly changed the subject, using the old tactic of answering the question he wished had been asked instead of the one put forth. Reid said that Israel was only defending itself and if the US were taking rocket fire from Toronto Canada we would act in kind. He then went on to say that Israel “gave” Gaza back to the Palestinians as a measure of good will and a display of peace. Well, if Gaza were never stolen and the other land not settled by the Jews there would be no rocket fire. Its easy to pick a point on a time line of this conflict and say such and such started here and caused this or that invasion. But the simple truth of the matter is that Israel should never have settled where and how it did in the first place. Why must the Palestinians bare the burden of a group hated and persecuted across Europe only to commit those same offenses against those whom they displaced?
In an effort to be completely honest I am an atheist and I hate Abrahamic religions. I think they are tools of intolerance and oppression so this is not about religion for me. It is about an oppressed race of people having the crime of apartheid committed against them.
Day 282: "Blowup" meets "The Ginger Man"
The movie we've been working on is in the can, aside from some fairly minor voice-work and one very simple shot that needs re-doing.
I think I have stumbled upon a key to making movies (and probably to doing anything else, for that matter): Get a lot of smart, creative, talented people signed up in various capacities, and then shut up and get out of their way while they do what they're good at.
The amount of talent working on this little movie has been jaw-dropping. Directors, actors, cinematographers, photographers, acting coaches, general creative consultants, the editor (whose work is still to come), even the folks who showed up to donate their free time as extras or miscellaneous crew.
I'm not particularly good at any of this stuff, but I'm smart enough to know my limitations, and lucky enough to have talented people around me who are willing to donate their free time to working on movies.
