Amazon in it for the long haul as profit tumbles
Leading online retailer has defended steep drop in profits as firm invests in expansion and employees.
Amazon reported earnings of USD 201 million, 44 cents a share down from USD 299 million, 66 cents a share from the same period a year ago. With Wall Street predictions at 61 cents a share the retailer’s results were way below expectations.
Chief executive Jeff Bezos told press this morning the figures are evidence of the retailer sacrificing short-term profit to ensure “long-term opportunities.” These include the company’s move into cloud computing and Kindle services.
With infrastructure investments taking priority over driving profit, Amazon’s expenses increased by 41 percent, adding 4,200 employees over the quarter. Amazon has said it expects revenues for the second quarter up to USD 9.65 billion, above Wall Street expectations. The etailer’s first quarter revenues came in at USD 9.86 billion, 38 percent higher than last year’s figures and also well ahead of Wall Street estimates.
would you work for this man?
He's Richard Muirhead, ceo of Tideway (I'm an investr), and he's
looking for a few good people..... VP Product Management and VP
Engineering and some salespeople in the US.
....oh yes, what does the company do? It develops and sells a
powerful tool that crawls a customer's IT infrastructure, figures out
what's there, analyzes the interactions and dependencies and so
forth. In knowledge there is power - to cut costs, manage licenses,
foster consistency and basically manage your systems better (not
that I want CNET's IT group to determine *everything* I use!)
