Pierce The Veil Interview (below)

Pierce The Veil Interview (below)

-I did not take or own this photo-

These are the interview questions that I asked and all answers are by Pierce The Veil's Vic Fuentes.

1. How did the band start?

-The band started with just my brother Mike and I about five years ago now. We didn't become a full band until about a year into the project, after Mike and I had written and recorded the first album. Soon after we were fortunate enough to find Tony and Jaime in San Diego and since then we have been touring our asses off.

2. How did you get the name for the band?

-I got the name randomly from a class in college. The teacher was talking about "piercing the corporate veil" so I related the term more to real life. With the idea that if you have a problem in your life that is building up and bringing you down, sometimes the best thing that you can do is to cut the problem out completely at the source, before things build up and hurt you over time.

3. Are there any special traditions you have when preparing for a show?

-We all hang out in the bus or our RV and listen to music together. We also developed a little backstage song that we sing every night right before we walk out onstage.

4. How it is on this tour so far?

-This is one of the best tours we have ever been on! It has been so nice to finally hear kids singing our new songs on a real club tour. Plus, all of the bands are friends of ours from Warped Tour, so we are all having fun and hanging out after the shows.

5. What is one unforgettable tour (or tour memory)?

-I will never forget when I knocked off our AC unit on top of our RV trying to go under a low bridge in New Jersey. It left a huge hole in our roof and of course it rained for like three days after that. Needless to say I am well aware of our height now.

6. Do you guys have any other hobbies (besides making music)?

-Yes, but they are all pretty nerdy haha! Jaime is a yo-yo master and can do magic, Tony can do a Rubik's cube in less than two minutes and collects Star Wars toys. I guess one sort of cool thing is we all love soccer and bring a ball on every tour we do.

7. If you weren't a musician, what would you be and why?

-I would have most likely continued with college for graphic design. I had to quit to start a life of touring full time. No regrets!

8. If you had to listen to one artist for the rest of your life, who would it be?

-Seems cliche to say, but it would have to be The Beatles. They just have so much diversity and so many songs that it's hard to compete with any other band.

9. Do you prefer to play in small venues or larger venues? Why?

-I like both for different reasons. We love a huge stage because we get to run around and do a lot of fun things that we can't do on small stages. Small venues are always fun because they are sweaty and chaotic. I love being able to grab a fan's hand when they reach out or look right into their eyes while they are singing and connect with them on a new level.

10. If you guys were to describe yourself in simple word choice...what would you say?

-Mexicore

11. What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

-The biggest challenge is honestly trying to make enough money to continue touring and also have the means to live while we're home. It's difficult because people don't buy CD's like they used to, so we have to make most of our money on merch and T-shirts. We have been lucky enough to make enough to fuel the fire so we are happy.

Reef (dryly): "The male perspective on girly clothes has been the same since the beginning of time."

Chloe: "Do tell."

Reef: "It all started back when the first cavedude spotted the first filth cutie in a fur tube top. He grunted, 'Less more. Skin good,' and it's been part of our man code ever since..."

Suki (distractedly): "And you wonder why I dumped him."

Chloe: "Eh, he's cute, though. Think I'll keep him around for awhile."

Reef: *sunny smile* "Thank you, baby."

Chloe: "Uh, Reef, you do realize that's Yuri's bra you're fondling, right? If Luke catches you, you're gonna lose higher brain function for at least an hour."

Suki: *mutters* "He can't lose what he never had..."

Reef: "Hey, after living with you two, the allure of the chick undie is dead to me. Y'all leave 'em hangin' all over the damn place. A dude can't walk in a room without getting a face full of lace."

Chloe: "So we've cured your boyhood fascination with bras, huh?"

Reef: "Ya, but no worries, bunnies. I still have much love 'n' fascination for what goes in 'em. Aloooha."

Chloe & Suki: *synchronized eye roll*

this ran last thursday in the new orleans picayune section - the freebie paper that's thrown in everyone's lawn. it's kind of a dumb picture, if you ask me, with me not even looking into the camera. i didn't even know she'd taken this one - i thought she had the camera pointed towards Rex and lance vargas, who were to my right, where i'm looking.

but whatever. i guess i can't complain. it's free publicity! she did spell my name wrong, but thankfully i have a friend who is a copy editor there who fixed it.

lisa jo from the craft mafia also got some props here. pretty cool!

I was absolutely floored by Kid Cudi's charismatic persona on stage. I admit to not being entirely familiar with his music but after seeing him live, I will most definitely check him out. I feel like his performance was definitely standalone and now I know why he was able to sell out the Commodore Ballroom.

Also, he was wearing a Boston t-shirt so props on that. Bonus.

Rome AT&T Microwave Tower

Rome AT&T Microwave Tower

As unusual as the ones in Aspen and Winter Park, Colorado is the one at Rome, Georgia.
But this unusual find is surpasses by the story of the picture. I took two shots from slightly different places in the parking lot of an architecturally insignificant office building. As I took the first picture from beside my car, two old men* with lawnmowers by their pickup truck in the far corner of the parking lot started jumping up and down, waving, and yelling at me. I backed up fot a better framing and the scene repeated itself. I thought I'd play with these security wannabes. So instead of driving off, I drove over to them.
"What's the problem?"
"You can't take pictures of that."
"Why not?" I chided.
"That's a Federal Building" he said pointing at the non-descript building.
I looked at the building for the first time and said "I own it".
His whole demeanor changed, not sure if I was somebody important. "You do?"
"So do you", I replied. "And they may not remember, but they still work for us or are supposed to".
"But you still can't take pictures of it." He was back in efficious mode.
"Why would anyone want to take a picture of that unattractive thing. I want a good picture of that" I said pointing at the tower.
"Oh the Bellsouth thing; that's different".
I didn't bother to explain that it's all AT&T now

*They were as much as 10 years my junior, but looked much older than I do. I was wearing a batik Hawaiian shirt and new very light khakis and a dark fedora hat. I guess it was the hat straight from the Master Spy Supply Company that did it. Or my Nikon D2X sneaky spy camera.

The Politics of Personalised Medicine: Pharmacogenetics in the Clinic (Cambridge Studies in Society and the Life Sciences)

Pharmacogenetics, the use of genetic testing to prescribe and develop drugs, has been hailed as a revolutionary development for the pharmaceutical industry and modern medicine. Supporters of "personalised medicine" claim the result will be safer, cheaper, more effective drugs, and their arguments are beginning to influence policy debates. Based on interviews with clinicians, researchers, regulators and company representatives, this book explores the impact of pharmacogenetics on clinical practice, following two cases of personalised medicine as they make their way from the laboratory to the clinic. It highlights the significant differences between the views of supporters of pharmacogenetics in industry and those who use the technology at the clinical "coal face." Theoretically, this work builds on the developing area of the sociology of socio-technical expectations, highlighting the way in which promoters of new technologies build expectations around it, through citation and the creation of technological visions.

HehuanShan.7.JPG

HehuanShan.7.JPG

A thin paved road brought us to the remote Mt. He Huan, high in Taiwan’s mountainous interior. We had no intention of coming this far. We’d actually been headed somewhere else. High atop the ridge just below the peak was a parking lot high. It surprised me that there were so many other cars in this place, way out in the middle of nowhere. Shuyuan said Mt. He Huan draws a lot of tourists from Taiwan’s subtropical lowland towns because at 11,000 feet it’s one of the places on the island where it sometimes snows in winter.

Across the road, at the base of the peak, we spotted a restaurant. We hadn’t yet found a place to have breakfast and now it was almost lunch time. We decided to go get something to eat. The moment I stepped out of the car, I felt the chill and noticed everybody else around had on ski jackets and thick winter clothes, even though it was the middle of summer. All I had on was a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. On my feet I wore sandals. We hurried over to the restaurant. It would be warm inside. But when we got there we found it closed down.

By the restaurant there was narrow footpath ascending the rest of the way up to the peak itself. It didn’t look like too difficult a climb. There were children clambering up and down the trail with their parents, and even several elderly individuals. Now that we were here I didn’t see any reason why we shouldn’t climb the mountain before going back. We began picking our way up the trail. There was a family in front of us going up the mountain. At the same time a whole crowd was coming down from the peak. We had to stand aside to let them pass. From down in the parking lot the mountain had looked like it was covered with short grass. But up close, the grass turned out to be a kind of dwarf bamboo almost waist-high that grew in thick clumps. Here and there, pressed to the ground, grew an alpine-looking plant with pretty star-like blue flowers. There were ants way up here. I was amazed to see their busy little highways. I wondered what they were eating and how they survived the winter.

Climbing the trail was mostly a matter of which rocks to grab on to, where to put the one foot, then where to put the other. We hadn’t gone very far before I noticed I wasn’t cold anymore. We stepped aside for another group of people coming down from the summit. They carried their ski jackets in their arms.

At one point as we neared the summit the crowd on the trail for some reason melted away for just a few moments and we found ourselves alone way up on the mountain. I stood there marveling that we should have gotten to a spot like this, where we could stand alone with nature, plumb in the middle of Taiwan’s central mountains. It certainly was not off the beaten track but there weren’t many places on the island as remote, or at least I had gotten to any. Here and there on the surrounding peaks patches of forest crept to higher elevations in sheltered places but mostly the slopes all around, like the one we were on, had no trees, or only stunted ones hiding in the shelter of some rock or under some cliff. What dominated at these elevations was the much simpler ecosystem of this dwarf bamboo. As an undergraduate I’d taken a course with the famous alpine ecologist W.D. Billings who had lectured endlessly about timberline. Of course, I’d seen pictures of it in books. But this was the first time I’d ever come across anything that looked like it in real life. Severe winds, low temperatures and physiological conditions prevented trees from growing above a certain height. What lay all around spread before our eyes was the Taiwanese equivalent of an alpine meadow. I pulled out the camera and snapped pictures.

Then, in the flash of an eye, there were people again in front of us and behind us on the trail again, going up and down. We climbed on up to the summit, and then later came down, got in the car and headed home. The dwarf grassy bamboo, I found out from the internet when I got back to my computer, was Yushania niitakayamensis (Hayata) Keng f., a species also found elsewhere in Southeast Asia. The pockets of forests hiding in sheltered areas would be composed mainly of Abies kawakamii (Hayata) Ito, which is endemic to Taiwan. I posted my pictures on Flickr for friends back home to see, typed in a comment about timberline under one or two of them and went on to other things.

A month later I happened back on the Flickr site. With the intention of deleting some of the less interesting photos, I brought the thumbnails of Mt. He Huan up large on the screen, one after the other. The remarks about timberline I’d posted with them suddenly struck me as strangely beside the point. What cried out to be seen in these photos was so much more rudimentary, so much more important. I could see it now. I must have seen it when I stood on the mountain and snapped the pictures — only I hadn’t realized it at the time. A concept got in the way.

Standing in front of her apartment building, she began to count the number of floors that were below her home. She did this by counting each window below it. There were fifteen. In some of them, the lights were still on. She enjoyed these apartments the most because of the silhouettes that would sometimes appear in front of them. For all the others, the lights were off, and the curtains were pulled close. She stood for at least half an hour, on the sidewalk, even after counting, until her cell phone broke her from her focus. She looked at the display. It was her mom. At the same time, the light came on in her kitchen window and she could see her mom's figure, holding the phone and looking out over the street. Not onto the sidewalk.

She put the phone back into her breast pocket where it lit the interior of her coat with each ring until it stopped ringing and the it became dark again. Upstairs, on the sixteenth floor, the kitchen window light turned off and her mom walked back to her bedroom. She hadn't wanted to go home, but she felt obligated to, that once in a while, it was a necessity.

There had been an accident on the road earlier. A man crashed his scooter into the front end of a taxi cab at full speed. His body flipped over the handlebars, across the top of the taxi, bounced off the trunk and into the car behind it. The light was green and it was sudden. No way that traffic was able to stop in time to keep the body from being dragged underneath the frame of the second car, even as the driver slammed the brakes. Nothing stops instantaneously. She heard the crunch of the impact, of the body, of the scooter, of the cab. Each sound was distinct and though it happened among many other competing sounds, each was sparse in their placement and delivery. They traveled through the hard plastic shell and padding of her helmet. There was a long silence afterward as everyone tried to assemble and playback what they just witnessed.
"Damn," her boyfriend said. She was on the seat behind him, her arms wrapped around his torso, hands crossed at the wrist, fingers hanging loose and unhinged.

People ignored the traffic lights. Everything was stopped. Even though the light was green, the intersection was still. When the initial flash of the event became an echo, a ringing in the ears, the scooters and cars proceeded through the intersection, driving around the wreckage the second car with the body underneath. Tip toeing.
"Hey, pull over," she said when she felt the vibrations of the scooter getting shoved from neutral to first gear her legs. She tapped the back of his helmet with hers. He extended his arm out to signal a turn, pulled the scooter up over the curb and dropped the kickstand.
"Fuck. Did you just see that?" he said.
The question irritated her. Of course she saw that. Everyone saw that.
She turned towards the people further down the river. They were strolling along the sidewalk, standing by the railing, or on benches. The boats, lit like brothels in their hot pink lights, floated along. Maybe they didn't see that. But the people here at the intersection did.

The cab driver stepped out. To her, the act was a long process, the opening stage of an evolving choreography. First, the door opened. Then a foot extended down onto the street. Then the second foot. Then the cab driver pulled himself forward, looked at the scooter embedded into the hood, rubbed his forehead and then, with a flourish, turned around to the car behind him. Like the impact, each action was spaced and apart from the others. Distinct and profound in its own wake. Like most cab drivers in the city, his hair was gray and combed into a thinning side part. He wore a blue shirt and khaki trousers. He had taken off his glass and held them at his side. They were silver.

The driver of the second car was already on the street. He had come out as her boyfriend maneuvered his scooter through the pedestrians to where they were now, next to the railing of the bridge. The driver was crouched on his knees and on a cell phone. He looked like a salaried version of death in his black overcoat, black trousers, black shoes and black tie. She had noticed him at first. Unlike the cab driver, there was an air of calm about him. His being there, on the ground, on the cell phone, was very natural. The gracefulness of his crouching, the way he seemed to talk into his phone, pulled her towards him. No nervousness. No exasperation. The body laying on the ground wasn't keeping him from going home to a wife waiting for dinner to get cold. There was nothing for him to go back to. He was meant to be there crouched on the ground evaluating bodies which found their way underneath his car. She wanted to be the person on the other line.
"Is he breathing?" she would say, "Tell me where you are."
"Yes," he would say, "East Beiping Rd. by the River Ai, next to the Film Archives."
"Don't move him. We'll be

Albert Einstein

Profession:Scientist
Country of Origin:Germany
Country of Asylum:United States of America
Date of birth:14 March 1879
Died:18 April 1955

The face is human, thoughtful. We have all seen it, a mass of unruly white hair framing a weary, yet endearing face. And we've all heard of Albert Einstein and his scientific theories. Yet few of us know of his days as a refugee, when his books were thrown into Hitler's bonfires, and as a German Jew, Einstein was accused of treason.

Growing up in Munich, Einstein was particularly interested in music and mathematics, and his ambition was to study electrical engineering in Zurich. However, he failed the entrance exam, leading some biographers to speculate that he suffered from the learning difficulty, dyslexia. Undeterred, he moved to Switzerland and enrolled in a school in Aarau, hoping to get a second chance to qualify for a place at the technical college. Eventually he succeeded, but he was unable to secure a teaching post at the college, and eventually took up the position of technical expert, third class at the Bern patent office.

In Bern, he worked on his research in his spare time and in 1905 published three papers that formed the basis for his work on the theory of relativity. He was awarded a doctorate by the University of Zurich, and from then on his academic career was made. In 1909, he resigned from the patent office and moved to Prague to take up a university post. In 1914, he returned to Germany to take up a research position at the Prussian Academy of Sciences.

In 1919, Einstein's theory that gravity was equivalent to mass was confirmed by research into solar eclipses. He was idolised in the popular press. The London Times ran a headline on November 7, proclaiming: "Revolution in Science - New Theory of the Universe - Newtonian ideas overthrown." In 1921, Einstein received the Nobel Prize.

However, the rise of the Nazi party and anti-Semitism made it increasingly difficult for him to work and in 1932 he took up the offer of a post at Princeton. He became a citizen of the United States, but retained Swiss citizenship.

Einstein and his wife worked tirelessly on behalf of German Jews, making visa applications and vouching personally for many refugees. He expressed mixed feelings about his life in exile. "I am privileged by fate to live here in Princeton," he wrote to the Belgian Queen, who had befriended him in the early days. "In this small university town the chaotic voices of human strife barely penetrate. I am almost ashamed to be living in such peace while all the rest struggle and suffer."

In 1944, Einstein supported the war effort by putting up for auction his 1905 paper on special relativity. It fetched $6 million, and the manuscript is now in the Library of Congress. His final letter was to philosopher and pacifist Bertrand Russell, lending his support to the movement to ban nuclear weapons. Einstein died on April 18, 1955.

Black Lips | @ the Royal Canadian Legion | Sled Island 2010

Black Lips | @ the Royal Canadian Legion | Sled Island 2010

Shows started just after 1pm at various venues on Day 2 of Sled. I walked to Republik and checked out some Makeout Videotape. Yeah, 1pm inside the Republik isn't the best experience but it was timely to snag some bbq eats on the patio. I figured I should head my way back to the Local Library for some all ages action. More good timing as there were free pancakes and kool-aid. Stefana and Ellis were set to play at some point in the afternoon as their show was moved to this venue after Comrad Sound was shut down. A new-ish ambient experimental project called Blanket (featuring Chad Van Gaalen among others) played as well as Toronto's RatTail (Unfamiliar). Cave from Chicago slayed out some sweet psych/noise jams - another favourite surprise discovery at Sled. There was a Tron-themed washroom upstairs.

The afternoon wasn't finished as I headed on over to Tubby Dog to catch Feral Children from Saskatoon who were part of the Wierd Canada showcase. I think they played Hokos last summer but I just missed their set. They are coming back in August. A few blocks down was a house show @ Vanessa's featuring more bands I don't know but-I'm-curious-to-find-out. Across the street was this sweet yogurt fruit place called Spoon Me. Got me some fruit smoothies which was a much needed boost for the late afternoon. A 7-piece punk ensemble called Hamas played. Enter Vanessa's through the backyard. Fire up some more BBQ action, relax on the trampouline. Upstairs starting to warm up.

Ok, back to Tubby Dog for Cousins (from Halifax). Couple of members of Cousins were wearing their own band's t-shirt. Isn't that some kind of concert t-shirt etiquette violation? Overlooking that, they impressed though. Nice Nice (from Portland) on next. While they were setting up I thought this better not be some Starfucker kind of shit. It wasn't which was good.

Azeda Booth was on my list to see @ Vern's but skipped it as Azeda were slated to play the Arrata the next day - better sound and space there then at Vern's. Made my way to Broken City for Turbo Fruits and Ty Segall. Wasn't into the Turbo Fruits but Ty Segall really amped it up. He's played multiple shows at Sled so this last show he was shooting the shit with the band playing mostly covers. Last stop of the night was the Black Lips @ the Legion. There was no escaping the front area mayhem after the first song. Lead singer of Black Lips even managed to step right on me while stepping his way onto the crowd. Unhindered smoking, crowd surfing aplenty, lost articles of clothing, mass bruises were just some of the results of taking this in.

The Ur-Jetty-Shaped Spiral Kid's T-shirt

The Ur-Jetty-Shaped Spiral Kid's T-shirt

I wanted to learn how to silkscreen, and to try making a shirt or two for the kids.

So I came up with an image almost at random of an unusual spiral shaped like a jetty. Coincidentally, we'd driven by the exact opposite thing last summer, a jetty shaped like a spiral, which was built in the Great Salt Lake by the late artist Robert Smithson.

At first, I thought of turning the spiral this way, which almost gave me the feeling of flying over a jetty in a geo-imaging satellite.

But the collar didn't resolve quite right--after all, it's a spiral on a t-shirt, not a jetty, which would attach to a shoreline right about there--so I turned it around.

To print, I went to a supervised open studio night at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring, MD. It worked out really well, and the folks were very helpful and informative. I was surprised, though, that in this crafty, DIY era, there are not more screen printing studio facilities available. That said, I was the only one there last night.
