Caption from Down Beat: [from article] My photo of Louis shows him just before the concert. The horn you see belongs to Bobby Hackett. Louis' had just been stolen. Satchmo' had to borrow a mute, too. All he had of his own for the concert was his mouthpiece, which he had in his pocket when the thief grabbed his case. Horn has since been recovered at a pawn shop.

ELECTRIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BEGINNERS - STRINGS FOR BEG
Electric Guitar Strings For Beginners - Clarinet High C.
Electric Guitar Strings For Beginners
- a guitar whose sound is amplified by electrical means
- An electric guitar is a guitar that uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to convert vibrations of its strings into electric signals. Since the generated signal is too weak to drive a loudspeaker, it is amplified before sending it to a loudspeaker.
- "Electric Guitar" is the seventh single by the English electronic music band Fluke. Taken from the album, Six Wheels on My Wagon the track was released in many formats but did not generate the same amount of interest as the previous single, Slid.
- A guitar with a built-in pickup or pickups that convert sound vibrations into electrical signals for amplification
- The Basics | Intervals and Power Chords | Open Chords | Muting and Raking | Learning Songs | Song Library
- Thread (a series of small objects) on a string
- string section: the section of an orchestra that plays stringed instruments

Just me
It all started in 1971. Our
Hawaiian group split up
when the lead singer ran
away with the hula girl taking
our saved up money with
them. The lead guitarist,
steel player, drummer and I
(Bass) set out playing at a
few bars, Elks etc. Just wasn’t
working out. I decided to
start my own band. Country
music was just becoming popular in the Phoenix
area again and I had an Idea. Why not get a girl
lead singer and add some boogie background to
country music.
We tried out the Final Touch Band at a
few bars… it went over very well. We landed a
job with the Maryvale Elks on Friday nights.
Were playing private parties and weddings -
anything that came along. Glendale Elks, Phoenix
Elks even the Ajo Elks once. Playing Friday
and Saturday Nights at a restaurant on the
slopes of South Mountain was Fun. That is
where Marty Robbins left us a note saying he
liked the group. The people that ran that place
wanted us to play 5 nights a week. I wasn’t
ready for that as I worked full Time for the
Safeway Distribution Center (44 years and 8
Months) We soon started playing up and down
the Scottsdale Strip, even at Carefree. Rawhide
(Scottsdale) heard of us and asked us to come
play. We did, and were hired. We had a previous
engagement booked for the city of Glendale
for the 4th of July. There were 40,000 people
there. My knees were shaking badly. I was going
to open with Johnny B Goode. Somehow my
voice wasn’t squeaky like I thought it would be,
and It went over great. My other musicians rotated
songs. We were a trio this night. Wow
what a night! We only played for 45 minutes.
The main music was the old time Fiddlers. The
Newspaper was very generous to us, barely mentioned
the Fiddlers, and saying we rivaled the
fireworks. The city wanted us the next year, but
we were under a contract then.Playing an average of 3 nights a week at
Rawhide starting out was great. Later we were
Rawhide’s main Tourist band. Four and some
times five nights a week were coming our way.
Now I know a lot of bands played at Rawhide,
but they didn’t last that long
We played mostly out back of rawhide
for the tourist groups and conventions that came
in from all over the world… I lost track of all the
countries that came there. There were several
big Groups. John Deere International Had
5,000 people, but Rawhide could only feed 1000
people a night. We played for them for 5 nights
in a row. There was another 5000 people job, but
I can’t remember who it was. Lots of 500 to almost
1000 company parties. Most were 50 to
100 or so, especially the tour groups. One remarkable
tour was when we were set up at one
of the portable band shelter out back. We were
waiting for the hay wagon to come. It was late,
and we were wondering if were going to play or
not. All of a sudden and out of the bushes they
came. They were Russian City officials, much
like our mayors. There was a group of secret
service and Russian officials with them. Wow!
Only mishap was that one of them wanted to
play my guitarist’s Guitar. My man wouldn’t let
him. Kinda ticked me off.
One year during the monsoons before
Pinnacle Peak road was paved, I could see rattlesnakes
crossing the road. One night on the way
home I thought one would make a good hatband
for my country hat. Using a mic stand to hold
the mad critter down and my pocket knife, I
subdued the snake and threw the body into the
back of my Van. It was still thrashing around in
a garbage bag. My lady singer promptly protested
and climbed over the seat. Later another
band person wanted a hatband just like mine.
He got one. Over the years, perhaps after some
of the redneck left me, I quit doing that and just
took pictures or relocated them out of peoples
yards.
We opened for several bands including
the Nashville Brass, Stella Parton (Dolly’s Sister), did warm ups for Nashville on the Road show and several less famous shows. Amanda Blake often sat at our break tables. She sponsored one of my lady drummer’s CD “Little Doggies Need Loving Too”. They made a couple of TV ads of us advertising Rawhide in Europe and Japan.
After 6 or 8 years playing out back and at private parties they offered us a chance to play at the Golden Belle Restaurant on the main street of Rawhide. We went in to play for two months and ended up playing for 16 months at 5 night a week.
I was getting too old to work two jobs. My wife was getting sick. We still had jam sessions at my house once a week. I would get the guys off the road and we would have a great time. One guy got back on drugs and I had to let him go. Things just weren’t the same after that. I just worked on my day job. My wife kelp getting sicker and sicker. She finally quit her job. She had a brain bleed, and even though she got through that, diabetes and dementia started. It was really terrible. My kids helped much as they could for a couple of years, even taking me on day photo shoots. I just kept working. Nothing else mattered anymore. I sold all my musical stuff except for my 5-string Bass, amp and a mic. Carol
MERHS Green benefit concert
Assignment: PCA63 - Echo
Deadline: May 3, 2009
Image tag: pca63
From: Tim TheRed
Mission:
Well initially I was thinking the assignment would be "Abstract Concept" -- pick any non-concrete idea and try to depict it.
But that seemed way to broad. I needed something more specific.
Then, along a different path, "Repeated Pattern" was one of my top choices for a more concrete assignment.
So I settled on "Echo". The abstract concept of a repeated or reflected pattern.
Note: Feel free to keep this semantically abstract. It's going to be challenging (though quite acceptable and perhaps very interesting) if you're trying to photograph reflected sound waves. But if you think outside the box, "echo" can have a lot of meanings.
WIT
High School Benefit concert, load music and a very energetic past student playing base.
This past two weeks have been crazy for me with work - but I did get out to photograph some sport and this concert so I had to settle on choosing one that fits the theme rather than shooting for the theme.
The head banging hair and the movement of the strings and hands all fit the theme for me.
I started off shooting with my 28-135zoom on 5.6 and then half-way through the evening switched to the 50mm prime at 1.8. I was able to turn off the flash and the clarity difference between the 28-135 and the 50mm prime is remarkable. I was a little worried about depth of field but at a distance of about 15ft I don't think it was a huge problem.
This image has an awful background so I look forward to the recommendations.

Santana is a phenomenal among the guitar heroes.
His playing technique and the sound of his guitar
is so personal, easy to recognize. His first LP's
are classics, specially the Abraxas.
In 1973 he became disciple of Sri Chinmoy and had
a Indian name Devadip (The lamp and eye of God)
He played with many jazz musicians: in Weather
Report, With McLauglin etc. etc...
- and he's still making records.
The album is full of eastern mysticism: the titles of the tracks,
the Yogananda's aphorism, the cover art... - but the music - it's
quite typical Santana's style. Long guitar solos and high-flying
with the Latin percussions.
The A-side is played without breaks one track after another.
One of Santana's best records ever!

Brainstorm, take me away from the norm
I got to tell you something
This phenomenon, I had to put it in a song
And it goes like
Whoa, amber is the color of your energy
Whoa, shades of gold displayed naturally
You ought to know what brings me here
You glide through my head blind to fear
And I know why
You live too far away
Your voice rings like a bell anyway
Don't give up your independence
Unless it feels so right
Nothing good comes easily
Sometimes you gotta fight
Launched a thousand ships in my heart
So easy, still it's fine from afar
And you know that
Whoa, brainstorm take me away from the norm
Whoa, I got to tell you something

Greek Bouzouki Music Player by Delia Parvu
Stretched impasto oil painting, using knives 20x20x3/4
The subject: Music is an extremely important part of the Greek life since ancient times. Every time I visit I am sourounded by music and I am impressed by everyone's desire to listen and dance to the beat. The Bouzouki sounds are a distinct part of Greek music as they take over the soul and make you feel as if you are part of the sound itself. The Buozouki is always present at all Greek festivals and those who play the instrument play it with incredible passion.
The painting: This painting shows a man playing the Bouzouki at a Greek festival near the town of Kiato. He looks as if he feels the music he plays. The oil colors were laid on the canvas entirely with painting knives. The main colors in this painting are red, black and beige.
My dinner last night, Vol. 3: the Greek Stradivarius
Resembling an oversized mandolin, the bouzouki is the mainstay of modern Greek music. The bouzouki is a stringed instrument which belongs to the family of the long-necked lutes. Instruments of a similar shape can be found in Pre-Hellenic civilizations (Egypt, Assyria, China, India). In ancient Greece, the same instrument was known under the name "pandouris", and from Byzantium onwards, it became known as the "tambouras".
According to my waiter, the bouzouki that this man is playing was handmade in Greece and is valued at between $2,000 and $3,000.

Frieland Z Mandolin Rain.
Mandy, resting at the fair. She's usually either eating or sleeping. Course, when you're a cow and you stand about 65 inches at the hip, that is about all you have time for. Bred back to Fustead Emory Blitz for a June 29th calf, provided she comes in on time.
Now that I think about it, I am going to have an interesting time showing her next year if she comes through okay. She's about as tall as I am.

The Modern Jazz Quartet was established in 1952 by Milt Jackson (vibraphone), John Lewis (piano, musical director), Percy Heath (contrabass), and Kenny Clarke (drums). Connie Kay replaced Clarke in 1955. The quartet performed in several jazz styles, including bebop, cool jazz and third stream.
Milt Jackson, John Lewis, and Kenny Clarke had originally played together in a quartet while in the Dizzy Gillespie orchestra from 1946 to 1950. Together with Ray Brown they played during interludes designed to give the trumpeters time to recover from the challenging upper register trumpet parts. This line-up recorded as the Milt Jackson Quartet in 1951. Bassist Percy Heath joined the line up in 1952 and the group became known as The Modern Jazz Quartet after John Lewis took over as Musical Director, a position which Jackson and Lewis had previously shared.
In their middle years the group often played with classical musicians, but their repertoire consisted mainly of bop and Swing era standards. Among the original compositions from the band's book are "Django" by Lewis (a tribute to the Belgian jazz guitar player Django Reinhardt), "Afternoon In Paris," also by Lewis, and Jackson's "Bags' Groove", the latter borrowing its composer's nickname. The group was first signed by Prestige and later in the fifties with Atlantic. In the late 1960s, in between their two periods with Atlantic, they signed with Apple, the Beatles' label (the sole jazz group on the label), and released two albums: Under the Jasmin Tree (1968) and Space (1969). Both Apple albums were re-released on one CD at the end of October 2010, with a previously unreleased rendition of the Beatles' "Yesterday" (recorded during sessions for Space) added as a bonus track. MJQ came to Apple through the first head of the label, Ron Kass. Kass was a jazz fan, and "Under The Jasmine Tree" was recorded in America prior to signing with Apple. The second Apple album "Space" was recorded at London's "Trident Studios" under the supervision of Apple A&R man, Peter Asher (Peter and Gordon).
Jackson left the group in 1974 partly because he liked a freer flowing style of playing and partly because he was tired of playing for little money (compared to rock and roll stars). As there could be no Modern Jazz Quartet without the two principals Lewis and Jackson, the group disbanded after going out with a rollicking concert in November at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. In 1981 the MJQ reorganized to play festivals and later on a permanent six months per year basis. The MJQ's last recording was issued in 1993. Heath, the last surviving member, died in 2005.

Chopin's grave
Paris, July 2009
Cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise
Frederic Francois Chopin (Polish: Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin, sometimes Szopen; surname pronounced /??o?p?n/ in English; French pronunciation: [??p??]; 1 March 1810[1] – 17 October 1849) was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist.[2][3] He was one of the great masters of Romantic music.[4]
Chopin was born in the village of Zelazowa Wola, in the Duchy of Warsaw, to a French-expatriate father and Polish mother and was regarded as a child-prodigy[5][6] pianist. On 2 November 1830, at the age of twenty, he left Warsaw for Austria, intending to go on to Italy. The outbreak of the Polish November Uprising seven days later, and its subsequent suppression by Russia, led to Chopin becoming one of many expatriates of the Polish Great Emigration.[7]
In Paris, Chopin made a comfortable living as a composer and piano teacher, while giving few public performances. Though an ardent Polish patriot,[8][9] in France he used the French versions of his names and eventually, to avoid having to rely on Imperial Russian documents, became a French citizen.[10][11][12] After some ill-fated romantic involvements with Polish women, from 1837 to 1847 he had a turbulent relationship with the French authoress George Sand. Always in frail health, he died in Paris in 1849, aged thirty-nine, of pulmonary tuberculosis.[13][14]

Chopin's compositions were written primarily for the piano as solo instrument. Though they are technically demanding,[15] the emphasis in his style is on nuance and expressive depth. Chopin invented musical forms such as the instrumental ballade[16] and was responsible for major innovations in the piano sonata, mazurka, waltz, nocturne, etude, impromptu and prelude.

He is a member of the Deru Folk Dance and Music Troupe of Haryana State of India. They sing in praise of old warriors and heros. Also, Gugga Pir (snake king). The artist is playing Deru musical instrument, which is bigger than Damru and serves the same purpose.
Haryana is rich in folklore. As noted elsewhere, the region is inhabited by simple, unsophisticated people, with traditions of their own. While of straight and frank disposition, they harbour deep emotions and a sensitive nature which have found expression in a rich body of folk culture.
In a more specific and significant way, folklore will include spontaneous expressions of emotions, song and drama, dance and music and other creative forms of individuals and group life.
Folk dances all over the world have common themes. These may depict seasons, festival, religious rituals, harvesting, hunting etc. Haryana dances come under one or the other category. Broadly, the following dances are common in one area or the other and performed on specific occasions.
Deru is a Dholak type percussive instrument made of a wooden shell and skin mounted on both sides. In fact, it is a large Damru, which is struck with sticks to produce rhythmic beats. Deru is used by folk performers as well as wandering devotees.

Rogue Shakespear Stout
Another fine beer from the Oregon based Rogue Brewery. I like how they include valuable information on the beer such as ingredients: chocolate malts, cascade hops, rolled oats, roasted barley, coastal water, and pacman yeast.
Appearance is dark (go figure) with limited head carbonation. Good lacing with the head.
The smell is chocolate nut and other deep rich tones. No aroma hops to note.
The taste is a robust stout with a bitter bite. An above moderate bitterness of 69 IBU is listed on the bottle. There is a slight metalic finish which I would prefer not to exist.
The mouthfeel is rich and low carbonation while the drinkability is moderate since this has an elevated alcohol %.
amusing my musical muses. amazing isn't it?
for TRP today's challenge: "where the muse visits"
for me, its my room. sitting, lying, pacing, quietly alone. no matter what kind of form my artistic mind wants to take hold of, whether it's a photo idea, a song/poem, or a song i'd like to try playing, my muse almost always visits me in secret, with the doors shut and the headphones on. when i am, in fact, in my own world, this is where im free to be myself.

Saxophonist
Saxophone: The saxophone consists of an approximately conical tube of thin metal, most commonly brass, flared at the tip to form a bell. At intervals along the tube are between 20 and 23 tone holes of varying size, including two very small 'speaker' holes to assist the playing of the upper register. These holes are covered by pads which are capable of pressing the holes to produce an airtight seal; at rest some of the holes stand open and others are closed by pads. The pads can be controlled by a number of keys by the left and right fingers, while the left thumb operates an octave key to open the speaker holes for the upper register. The fingering for the saxophone is a combination of that of the oboe with the Boehm system, and is very similar to the flute or the upper register of the clarinet. On the larger instruments, the leverage required to play the very lowest notes (which are customarily played with the left and right little fingers) is great enough that additional keywork is introduced to enable these to be played with the thumbs.
Blowing Notes
Jesse Carr can blow notes on his saxophone and sing as seductively at the lower registers as Dean Martin in his hey day.
So my five year old son and I took to the dance floor last night for a bit of sway me smooth, sway me now.
Who says we don't have good entertainment out here in the Vermont/New Hampshire sticks?
Mr. Carr thanked me for not using a flash (I used a 50mm lens and available light) and was gracious when I offered to e-mail him the shots I had taken.
"They're your pictures," he said politely.
"Yeah, but it's your face," I replied.
