riad marrakech medina, top notch accommodations marrakech:dar najat I'm not used to write reviews but in this case I just have to. We returned from our three days staying in Dar Najat few days ago and we keep talking about this place and especially - about people and service. They read you like a book - they know exactly what you need, what would help, what you like ... how to behave! Amine takes you through medina to teach you how to come back next time by yourself. Oliver is amazing! Such a great guy. He gave us great suggestions where to go, where to stay in Essaouira, he also arranged a trip to Atlas for us. For us this place has no mistakes. Toof-terrace is perfect: nice music, jucuzzi, natural orange juice, food if you want (just tell them enough in advance). Tajine, cous cous, vegetables - it's nothing but dellicious. Decoration, rooms, location, athmosphere, service - you will love it all. We really did. Hopefully one day we come back to enjoy Dar Najat again. mt tamborine accommodation escarpment winery entrance One of the delicious past times that visitors to Mt Tamborine are discovering is wine tasting. Sheraton Mirage, Gold Coast Sunrise over the Sheraton Mirage, Gold Coast, Qld, Australia. While staying here a few days for work training I was able to get up early for several sunrises. This one in particular was quite colourful. Those are coconut palms, I was quite surprised to see them growing so far south. Chatting with one of the gardeners confirmed they don't actually ripen here (Gold Coast is only a subtropical climate). Although it's still a big job to cut the coconuts off whenever they grow (don't want them dropping on any guests now do we). I didn't want to crop it like the way it is. The horizon is too close to the centre for my liking. I cropped the bottom quite a bit as there was a distracting crack along the bottom of the pool. Hotel Cipriani Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Hotel Cipriani is a hotel in Venice, northern Italy. On May 26, 1958 Giuseppe Cipriani, founder of Harry’s Bar in Venice and inventor of the Bellini cocktail, opened the Hotel Cipriani on the island of Giudecca. In 1976, Orient-Express Hotels was founded with the purchase of Hotel Cipriani in Venice, and began as the leisure division of Sea Containers Ltd and was later incorporated as Orient-Express Hotels Ltd., a Bermuda company. Some sharpening in PhotoShop Locanda Cipriani, Torcello Although it doesn't look much, this hotel on Torcello is apparently very popular with the rich and famous. hotel cipriani venezia The complete history of the legendary Venice landmark where Hemingway, Welles and others were regulars. A meeting place for writers, artists, models, and the stars of stage, screen, and corporate boardrooms, a luxurious restaurant whose fabulous concoctions and timeless decor have often been imitated but never matched, Harry’s Bar in Venice has remained one of the world’s most renowned watering holes for more than sixty years. Ernest Hemingway, Orson Welles, Sinclair Lewis, and other luminaries have tasted its famous cocktails and enjoyed the bar’s original inventions, such as the “carpaccio” appetizer and the now-ubiquitous bellini. Filled with engaging wit and lighthearted charm, Arrigo Cipriani’s history of Harry’s Bar is a delight to read—and the next best thing to a table at Harry’s Bar itself. 16 black-and-white photographs For the weary traveler or isolated expat, there is nothing like finding that special bar or cafe that can make you feel welcome when you are far from home. While the desperate characters of Casablanca had Rick's Place, we have our favorites as well: Willi's Wine Bar in Paris, Jo's Bar in Prague, the Cafe Greco Antico in Rome, or Magaritsa in Sophia. Harry's Bar in Venice is such a spot--and one of the most famous at that. Just off the Palazzo San Marco, Harry's Bar has played host to such literary luminaries as Truman Capote and Ernest Hemingway, cinema heavyweights the likes of Orson Welles, and rich and powerful guests such as the Aga Khan. Harry's Bar is the biography of this institution. In this witty memoir, Arrigo Cipriani gives us the view from behind the bar, sharing anecdotes about the operation of the Venetian watering hole, disclosing secrets of mixacology, and passing on the old stories of his father, who cofounded Harry's in 1931. Windemere Hotel, London The good mood dampened considerably when we hit our hotel room at the Windemere Hotel in Westminster. For over $300 US per night we got a room barely larger than the two double beds it contained. But, frankly, I think what really ticked Mike off was the fact it was in the basement. Of course, being a woman, I felt he was judinging me, not the room and it was pretty much all downhill from there. Hotel Baker St.Charles, IL. Leica 25mm/1.4 D Summilux. Hotel Baker is a historic landmark in St. Charles, IL. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been in and out of the hotel business since 1928. The structure of Hotel Baker is made up of brick, concrete, and steel-encased utilities-elements, effectively making the building “fireproof”. The exterior of the building showcases aspects of Spanish Romantic Revival architecture. At the top of the five story building sits a square tower, while the front entrance has a peacock stained glass window centerpiece. Outside are gardens, terraces, and once a putting green and fishing pond. History Hotel Baker was the vision of longtime St. Charles, IL resident, Colonel Edward J. Baker. In 1918, at the age of 50, Baker inherited 20 million dollars from his sister Dellora Baker Gates, heiress to the Texaco Oil Company . In 1926, using the interest off the money, Baker started construction on Hotel Baker on the banks of the Fox River in downtown St. Charles on the site of the old Haines Mill. He commissioned Wolf, Sexton, Harper, and Trueax of St. Charles to design the hotel. The 55 room hotel blended the latest technology with Spanish Romantic Revival architecture. It was completed in 1928 and cost around 1 million dollars to build. The grand opening of the Baker Hotel commenced on June 2nd, 1928 with a dinner for 301 guests. The price for spending a night at Hotel Baker in those early years was $2.50. After living on the 5th floor for 31 years, Baker died in 1959. He left Hotel Baker to his niece, Dellora Norris. Norris attempted to sell the hotel, but after failing to find a buyer she donated it to the Lutheran Social Services of Illinois in 1968. It closed for remodeling and reopened in 1971 as a nondenominational residence for the elderly . During that time it was put on the National Record of Historic Places. In 1996, St. Charles businessmen Craig Frank and Neil Johnson bought the hotel and following a $9 million renovation, cleaning, and upgrading of utilities, the hotel once again welcomed guests. In 2003 after a temporary shutdown due to a lack of owner, Hotel Baker was bought in auction by Joe Salas. Amenities The Hotel Baker opened with the most luxurious amenities of the late 1920s. There were several shops within the hotel including a women's clothing store, a newspaper shop, a barber, and a beauty shop. The main attractions inside the hotel were the Trophy Room and the Rainbow Room. The Trophy Room imitated a Spanish courtyard, complete with balconies, awnings, a fountain, and a simulated sky. The Rainbow Room featured an oval glass dancing floor and a pipe organ connected through the Trophy Room. Until 1955, red, green, blue, and amber lights beneath the floor could create spectacular patterns, and images such as an American flag. Unfortunately, following a flood, the lights were re-wired manually and since, the lights 'Amber, Red, Green, and Blue' can only be turned on or off. Though permanently damaged, the Rainbow Room is still a major attraction for guests and the public. The Hotel Baker was also unique in that the hotel was designed with every guest room being different. Not only were the furnishings unique to each room, the floorplans did also differ. This distinction no longer stands, however. Awards The Hotel Baker is listed on the National Record of Historic Places. It also helped earn St. Charles the title of "150 Great Places in Illinois" and the Great American Main Street Award in 2000. Famous Guests The Hotel Baker has been the hotel choice of many notable people for their stay in the western suburbs of Chicago. Famous guests include: * John F. Kennedy * Gerald Ford * Chicago Mayor Richard J Daley * Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson * Illinois Governor Jim Thompson * Senator Charles Percy * Senator Everett Dirksen * Senator Edmund Muskie * Tommy Dorsey * Guy Lombardo * Louis Armstrong * Lawrence Welk * Evangelist Billy Graham * Jerry Lewis Hauntings As a trend among old antique hotels, there are rumors formulated of ghosts within its walls. A popular story is said to be that a chambermaid was engaged to another employee, but he up and left her. Distraught, she cried inconsolably for days. A few weeks later, she disappeared, presumably after drowning in the river outside. This story was actually made up for publicity after the hotel's re-opening in the 1990's. There have been no valid, confirming reports of any ghosts in the Hotel Baker. There have been a number of deaths on the ground though The first owner and the builder of the Baker Hotel, Colonel Edward J. Baker died in 1959 of old age in Room 505. The site of the hotel was originally a mill that burned to the ground years before, at least two mill workers were claimed to have died in the fire. It is rumored that since Al Capone visited the hotel in its earlier years, his croni Royal Hotel Breakfast Room The Royal was one of more than 60 pubs that lined Levuka's rowdy waterfront, catering to every imaginable traveller. There were frequent raids from warring tribes, violent altercations among the settlers, disease and blackbirders trading their human cargo. The Hotel's front steps were often the site of many slave auctions. Times may have changed, but the Royal remains. Situated adjacent to the waterfront, in the heart of Levuka town (the Old Capital of Fiji), The Royal Hotel represents the finest embodiment of Levuka's Colonial past. Binion's Hotel, Restaurant and Casino - Las Vegas Nevada Binion's is one of a few main casinos anchoring the old downtown section of Fremont Street in Las Vegas, which for most represents "The Old Vegas." The "New Vegas," of course, would be The Strip, the home of the monster-sized theme hotels/casinos such as Caesar's Palace, The Mirage, The MGM, and many others. Fremont Street features a few city blocks which are blocked off to vehicle traffic. and is open to pedestrians only. Shoppers, tourists, gamblers and gawkers can wander the streets and imagine what Gambler's Vegas might have looked like back in the days before The Strip. Binion's itself does not appear to have been remodeled for a generation or more, and exudes a history-ness almost pioneer like, and beloved by many who are averse to change. (Canon Powershot G12) Japanese Restaurant At the Mirage. We passed this (and other) restaurants in the Mirage as we left Siegfried and Roy's "Dolphin Habitat" and "Secret Garden." For some reason, restaurants in Las Vegas that feature Asian cuisines like to spell their names the French way -- like this one at the Mirage and "Chinois" at Caesar's Palace. WIFI Pet Friendly Island Acres Motel opened in the summer of 1954 to much fan-faire. Built that spring by Elmo Bevington, who later went on to develop the Monarch ski area, with a a two-part plan for the motel. He constructed the original motel using Gunnison Homes, which has nothing to do with Gunnison, Colorado but was a prefabricated kit home that a buyer purchased from a catalog through a dealer. Bevington just happened to be a Gunnison Homes dealer and offered lots for sale that surrounded the motel. The motel was expanded in the summer of 1958 to include a duplex, probably in anticipation of the workers that the Blue Mesa Reservoir project would be bringing to the valley. While Island Acres was closed that winter, one of the Gunnison Homes buildings was lost to an unexplained fire. This building was replaced with a full log building that was produced locally. The Loc-Log plant was close to were the airport now sits. Unlike the Gunnison Homes, which seemly only sold a few buildings in the area, one can find many Loc-Log buildings throughout Gunnison, including a church. In the early 1960’s, the owners of Island Acres moved another log building onto the property. This building originally sat on the Rippling River Ranch, located by the famous Lake City bridges. It was a part of a dude guest ranch that could accommodate up to sixty guests. The buildings were built by the ranch’s owner and his sons. This is our only building without kitchens as all the Rippling River Ranch guests were fed three meals a day by the ranch owner’s wife in their ranch house, which now sits on the north end of Gunnison. In the 1980’s, two buildings were added on each end of the current configuration, enhancing the tourist court appearance of the motel. Vagabond Motel, Evanston, Wyoming The main reason I stayed at the independent Vagabond Motel in Evanston, Wyoming, is because, at $49.95 plus tax, it was ten dollars cheaper than the nearby Motel Six. It could well be the least expensive accomodation in Evanston. My room was clean enough but could have been cleaner and definitely could have used some updating. Still, I slept soundly knowing that I was saving at least $10. If Karen had been with me we would have stayed at a nicer place, but this one is okay for those on a tight budget. My room had cable TV, air conditioning, and a bed that was okay. Pets are allowed; they have truck parking and in room coffee. Micro refrigerators and weekly rates are available. Bruneau, Idaho cemetery The weather during the first two days of my 8 day road trip changed quickly and forcefully. Sometimes there were blue skies filled with puffy white cumulus clouds, then a short time later, the winds would roar in and rain and/or snow would fall, from dark low storm clouds. On day one of an 8 day, May of 2010 road trip, I found a road that to the best of my knowledge I had never traveled before. I stopped at Mountain Home, Idaho to get some groceries and gas up the truck (while watching fighter jet pilots poking holes in the clouds with their trainer fighter jets). From Mountain Home, Idaho I drove highway 51 south through Bruneau and Riddle, Idaho. Then the highway turned into Nevada 225. I continued south through the interesting country of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation until I reached the "Wildhorse Crossing" campground, south of Mountain City, Nevada. It had rained heavily and the campground roads were muddy. Still I found a nice secluded campsite, next to a tumbling stream and set up "camp". I took several long hikes, east, south, and west of camp and saw a small herd of elk roaming the sagebrush covered hills. The next morning, everything, including my pickup truck was encapsulated in a veneer of ice. It had got mighty cold that night, and I was happy to get the heater going in the pickup truck cab as I headed south through Nevada to my next destination in Utah (Snow Valley State Park by St. George, Utah). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ May 12th through May 19th - - I traveled 9 states in 8 days, camping, driving back roads, visiting scenic and historic sites, and taking some great day hikes. These are some of the photographs from this solo "road trip". Day One: Home in Eastern Washington; Mountain Home, Idaho; Owyhee, Nevada and a very cold night camped at Wild Horse Crossing south of Mountain City, Nevada. Day two: NEVADA - - Mountain City; Elko; Wells; Ely (through a snow storm); Panaca. UTAH - - Enterprise, Veyo, to a warm and scenic enjoyable camp and hiking at Snow Canyon. Day three: UTAH - - Snow Canyon; St. George; Hurricane; to Fredonia, Arizona. Forest Service Road #22 and many others to places like Monument Point and Indian Hollow. Too cold to camp (got down to 19 degrees that night), so dropped down low to BLM wilderness land off 89 A and spent the night among sagebrush and juniper with curious mule deer as "neighbors". Day four: Opening day of the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Visited the park and arriving early had many places (Cape Royal), entirely to myself. ARIZONA: Vermillion Cliffs; Page; Kaibito; and Navajo National Monument and Betatakin, where I had my nicest camp site (Canyon View at Betatakin). Day five: Betatakin camp to Kayenta; Monument Valley to drive the 17 mile "loop road" through the monument; to Mexican Hat to recharge my camera battery (Canon G10) while eating Navajo stew and fry bread at a cafe along the San Juan River; to Comb Ridge where I took two short enjoyable "rock art and cliff dwelling" hikes (procession panel and Monarch Cave ruins; up to Blanding, Utah where I checked into a small motel for two nights. Day six: Get up early and hike a bit over 14 miles down Kane Gulch; down Grand Gulch to Todie Canyon, with many side excursions to visit cliff dwellings, granaries, rock art sites, etc. Weather started to blow in by the time I finished my hike. Day seven: Changed my mind with the weather. Instead of heading for the Bisti Wilderness (for the first time) and Chaco Canyon (for the third time) - - I headed north through Moab then turned east toward Grand Junction, Colorado. Stopped at Sego Canyon rock art site outside of Thompson Springs, Utah. COLORADO - - Grand Junction, Rifle, Craig. WYOMING - -Baggs, Rawlins, Lander, Dubois (where I got a real nice motel room for a reasonable rate). Day eight: Left Dubois, Wyoming early. Cold, windy, cloudy weather with a hint of snow in the air. Drove up through Yellowstone Park and exited via Mammoth Hot Springs; then on to Livingston, Montana. On I-90; hitting sun, the clouds, the rain, then a nasty storm (between Missoula, Montana and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho). Slept in pickup camper before driving on through the early morning back to my home in Eastern Washington. Day nine: Arrived home at 4:30 am. Another fun road trip.
