Heavy duty chains and padlocks seem to be de rigueur in New York. I didn't see a single U-lock. And apparently they come in handy for fisticuffs between couriers.

BMX Track Evening Sunlight

BMX Track Evening Sunlight

I took a wander down to the local bmx track in Crewe to try and snap some shots while the light was still good. After the daylight dropped away there was quite a bright and warm sunset. Not really shot in these conditions much and it was made harder by the riders mainly riding the straight going away from the sun. This meant me shooting straight at the bright orange ball of light.

Fairly happy with the results though, something i wouldn't normally do, shooting directly at the sun. Was tricky to stop it getting too full on to the lense. But thanks to the lads that were riding, gave me something to shoot. Technically maybe not my best shot from the night, but i just love the colour and warmth.

Article text reads: Just a few short years ago, a small team of world-class cyclists set out to create frames and bicycles that rode at the same caliber they did. They wanted machines that were light enough to fly uphill, totally efficient so every ounce of power reached the ground, fine-tuned to soak up vibrations for ride-all-day compliance, and had the perfect geometry for a custom fit and phenomenal handling.

The result was Blue Competition Cycles, and their impressive bicycles immediately proved themselves achieving glory at nearly every major North American road race, in UCI cyclocross races, 24-hour MTB races, and even Olympic qualifiers.

Clearly, Blue bicycles live up to the company's "built to win" motto making them a great choice for your next dream bike. And, when you buy a Blue, you get the same exact design that Blue's sponsored athletes ride. Looking for a world-beating cross-country bike? You can get the same model Blue that Paolo Montoya commanded to a second place finish in the grueling La Ruta de los Conquistadores. Is road racing your game? You might choose the same Blue that Tina Pic piloted to criterium glory. You want to win and Blue makes it possible!

Beyond the eye candy of Blue's exotic tube shapes and bold, colorful graphics is cutting-edge research and design. Blue utilizes carbon-shaping technology borrowed from Formula 1 race cars, wind tunnel testing to ensure the utmost efficiency, tube and lug designs that minimize weight and maximize strength, and also sleek, light monocoque designs. Most importantly, every Blue is tested thoroughly by top riders long before it's put into production to ensure the final product is the best it can be.

Whether you prefer to play in the dirt or burn it up on the road, build your own or buy a complete, there's a Blue that'll carry you across the finish line of all your cycling goals. And the ride there will be nothing short of spectacular.

Stop by the shop and let us show you the many reasons Blue is our favorite color!

Day 11: The Resistance

Day 11: The Resistance

Heh. Get it? Wind resistance. Man. I can be really punny sometimes.

Anyway, today was tuesday. My first tuesday of school. Twas a delayed start, and it marked the "you've been here one full week now" mark. It's been a really good week back. Today I got up at around 10:30 to the charming sound of alexes alarm blasting at full volume, accompanied by the regret of missing my own alarm two hours earlier. That got me up quick :D Then a shower, 20 minute nap and breakfast with Claire, Meghan, Ashley, and Kahla, who had all just gotten out of class. Then I watched Episode 1 of the Universe (part of a TON of DVDs my very awesome uncle gave me for viewing pleasure during college) with alexis. Then went to Target to get tea, coffee, creamer, cereal, vanilla soy milk, a tea mug (plain white for viewing of the tea color) and foam swords. Then home, more universe, dinner with Casey and Justin (who rock) and Meghan (BFFL) and then a bike ride with Meghan during which I made a turn to fast and slid. Turns out hands don't agree well with pavement when that pavement is moving 20ish mies per hour under you. So after I slapped some bandaids on there and got the feeling in my hands and arms back 20 minutes later I regretted that turn. Anyway, back to the dorms for two episodes of lost and some general hanging out with friends and playing the N Game and then sleep at 12:30 or 1 am.

Wow. That was verbose.

Anyway, Here's an interesting picture from my trip to Grama's for Christmas back in 2010. I keep finding new wonderful pictures from that trip. Such good times.

I'm over a decade of days now! 355 to go!

So many bike brands have names appropriate to the way we use our bikes in Copenhagen.

There are so many called "Shopping" or "marcado" or "street" this or "city" that.

Or the retrostyle "tourist" theme.

Lingering at the back like a dodgy aroma is a Ragazzi - probably leftover from the mid 90's when mountain bikes were popular for about three and a half months.

For some reason the market was flooded with Italian mountain bikes.

Dad, the accursed halo, and his girls.

Dad, the accursed halo, and his girls.

A Life Lesson
By: Kiley Bathrick
Your parents always tell you not to break your neck, now I understand why! Imagine getting into bed on a quiet summer night, just beginning to doze off, only to be awakened by the shrill ring of the telephone. My sister, Kendra, came in and told me we had to go to the hospital, that dad was hurt. It was 11:30 p.m. Kendra,my mom and I quickly got ready to go to the E.R. At the time, we didn't know what exactly had happened; only that he fell off his bike on the pier. We were more angry than upset. I mean, who’s dumb enough to go bicycling on the pier at night?! We had no idea how severe the situation was. It was bad. The doctor told us that he had broken his neck, and that he would be airlifted to Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids. As my dad faced possible paralysis, my world had suddenly come crashing down. Words cannot express the empty feeling we all had as we watched our hero be loaded onto the stretcher. Everything was so uncertain,and we had no idea what my dad was about to go through.The next morning, my sister and I made the long drive to Grand Rapids.When we arrived at Spectrum, we could already tell that the situation wasn’t a good one. My grandma's eyes were red, as were my mom's. When I saw my dad just lying there on the hospital bed, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.Dad honestly looked like death warmed over. I mean, he was pale, he couldn’t move his legs at all and his arms were weak. His hands were swollen three times their normal size and he had the accursed halo on his head! The halo head brace completely restricted ANY movement of his neck and head,and the way it was held to him was by four titanium screws drilled into his skull.Yeah, he was pretty rough.The next day he went into surgery to fuse his vertebrate together. Afterwards, the doctor said the surgery had gone well but considering dad's age and injury he had less than a 25% chance of ever walking again. I was devastated. We had been planning to run a 5k together the next week. Now it looked like we wouldn’t ever be doing things like that again.Over the next five days things didn’t seem to get any better. I don’t think people realize what can be affected with a spinal cord injury. Even the simplest of normal functions, like swallowing Jello, won't work. He still had no movement in his legs. We would stay late into the night to watch over him because his breathing was so labored. That first week after the accident was probably the hardest week to go through. My mom and sister and I would get back to our room and we would all just break down and cry ourselves to sleep every night. After only five days he was moved to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital,also in Grand Rapids. The first few weeks there, he mostly just stretched and strengthened. His arms were too weak to push himself so they had him in an electric chair. He also had no leg activity or strength, so he was hoisted up in a huge sling to move him from the bed to his wheelchair and from the wheelchair to the exercise mat. He couldn’t even situp. He relied on help to do everything. Eventually as he gained upper body strength and some core muscle control so he could sit up on his own. His legs were still not working. He was continuously gaining strength in his left leg, and was able to sit up for short periods of time without support, but his right leg still didn’t want to cooperate. Even though we had tried to stay positive we were all worried sick. The longer it takes for the movement to return the less chance that it will come back at all. Finally, one day after hundreds of times asking him to try to move his right leg, just try, we asked him one more time. My dad tried so hard, he put so much effort into it and we saw a flicker of movement in the muscles surrounding his knee! Icouldn’t take it, I began to sob,because I think all of us thought that we would never see any movement in that leg again. After this,things began to get a little better. His physical therapist, Amy, tried electro stimulation (e stim) on his right leg which seemed to help alot. The purpose of e stim is to make the muscles work by sending electric shocks into the muscles that make them contract. Sometimes, when they do this the brain will find new ways of reaching the muscles, new pathways that it never knew about before. This is what was happening for my dad. A miracle was occurring. As my dad’s time at Mary Free Bed progressed, so did his healing. He learned how to walk again in multiple steps. He used a stationary bike, stood with support, stood without support. He then began to walk in the pool using parallel bars, then parallel bars outside of the water. Then he started walking very short distances with a walker,slowly the walks lengthened as his legs became stronger. As simple as all of this sounds, each time my dad tried something new and walked farther, it took him all ofhis strength to do so. Walking is still a struggle even now, and his right side is s

Mark Douglas Bozman “Boz”, 47, died on September 10, 2008 from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident on August 31, 2008 in Valencia, CA. He was born on July 27, 1961 in Boise, Idaho to Caroll and William Bozman. His 10 pound birth weight led to the nickname “Tarzan”. He was raised in rural Eagle, Idaho and Boise. As he grew older, his adventurous nature became more apparent to the neighbors as well as his family. Drama drew him like a magnet. Playing rock and roll music, racing and wrecking cars are just some of the more noticeable activities in which he regularly engaged. He also spent many hours eagerly exploring the Donnelly, Idaho area of West Mountain, which surrounded the family cabin, roaming the ridges with his brother Scott and sister Kathy. He almost always caught his limit of perch or trout while fishing from Retirement Point on nearby Cascade reservoir. He attended the University of Idaho and began his career as a television news cameraman in Boise for KTVB, and later with KTRV. Eventually he moved to Spokane, where he worked for several years as a news cameraman for KREM television. He pursued his career in photojournalism and relocated to Los Angeles, California. He had an incredible ability to tell a story through the images he captured. Mark won an Emmy for one of those stories. He started his own company, Digital Point Of View, which offered the latest in HD and HDV camera and audio technology. His playful nature allowed him to become the king of 4th of July fireworks. Mark would always provide a good scare to any unsuspecting individual on Halloween. You could always depend on Mark to make a mean pot of chili and home baked bread which were eagerly devoured by all! Throughout his life he was an avid outdoorsman, and with his playful and competitive nature, he strived to out-fish everyone! His innate skill to document life, whether through digital video or photographic media, allowed him to travel and experience more of the world than most of us can imagine. His through-the-lens perspective captured the beauty and, at times, the ugly reality of our world. He visually led us through each story allowing us to share his unique viewpoint. Mark’s professional accomplishments include major network projects with NBC, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and Fox Broadcasting. A small sample includes Cops, America’s Toughest Jobs, Ax Men, Street Patrol, The Amazing Race, The Pick-Up Artist, Filthy Rich:Cattle Drive, Disaster in the Oil Fields, Ocean Force:Panama City Beach, Pimp My Ride, Man vs. Beast, World Championship Adventure Race:Switzerland, Boot Camp, Payback, The Ultimate Gamer:E3, Big Brother, LAPD:Life on the Beat, and placement of numerous cameras to capture the Stardust Casino demolition in Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his beloved father, William D. “Boz” Bozman. Mark is survived by his wife Shannon and his sons Erik, Zachary and Jacob. His three boys were the center of his life. To Mark, his boys were his pride and joy, and he shared his adventurous spirit with them through regular fishing, camping, and dirt bike excursions. Mark will always be remembered as an incredible father. He also leaves behind his parents, Ray and Caroll Behrman of Boise; a sister, Kathy (John) Oswald of Boise; a brother, Scott (Mary) Bozman of Spokane; step-sisters, Shelly (Dick) Miiller, Terry (Greg) Davis of Boise; and many other friends and family who loved him. Mark, we will miss you so much! You will forever be in our hearts. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation, in memory of Mark, to your local Humane Society, or, Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O. Box 5030 Hagerstown, MD. 21741-5030. A Memorial Celebration of Mark’s life will be held in Boise at the Willowbrook Community Clubhouse, 5601 Willowlawn Way, Garden City, ID on Sunday, October 19, 2008 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

HAPPY CATURDAY!!!

HAPPY CATURDAY!!!

To Those of Us Born
1925 - 1970

~~~~~~~~~
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank
while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then, after that trauma, we were
put to sleep on our tummies
in baby cribs covered
with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets,
and, when we rode our bikes,
we had baseball caps,
not helmets, on our heads.
As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes..
Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And we weren't overweight.
WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day.
--And, we were OKAY..
We would spend hours building
our go-carts out of scraps
and then ride them down the hill,
only to find out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Play Stations, Nintendos and X-boxes. There were
no video games, no 150 channels on cable,
no video movies or DVDs,
no surround-sound or CDs,
no cell phones,
no personal computers,
no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS
and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut,
broke bones and teeth,
and there were no lawsuits
from those accidents..
We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand, and no one would call child services to report abuse.
We ate worms, and mud pies
made from dirt, and
the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and
-although we were told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts
and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn
to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers,
problem solvers, and inventors ever.
The past 50 to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas..
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of those born
between 1925-1970, CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
While you are at it, forward it to your kids, so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?
About that day
About that day
So. You wanna know how it all went down? Fine. I’ll tell you.
Well, I’ll tell you what I remember, anyway.
It was a pretty long time ago. 76? 77? Something like that. Back when I was living up above the shoe store.
Yeah. Remember that place? It was crazy. I think they called it a railroad flat. Like, the whole thing was laid out consecutively, like cars on a train. Room after room. You couldn’t get to one without passing through the others. No hallways or anything. Just these four rooms, stacked together… Like… 1, 2, 3, 4.
The place had a window that looked out over Front Street. Remember? You could see all the action downtown from there. Well… what action there was.
Small town. Yeah. Not a hell of a lot going on. But summers were always busier, what with kids out of school and nothing to do. They did a lot of cruising… just walking or driving around downtown… looking for parties, scoring drugs, getting laid. The usual.
Seemed like Rog was everywhere that summer. On his bike. I remember looking out my window and seeing him, turning slow circles in the empty street… all by himself at dusk on a Sunday.
We laughed at him. Remember? Weird old dude on a bike. Like, he must have been 30 or something. And into the young chicks. Always the young ones. I think the older ones must've been way too smart for him.
The day you wanna hear about… it was pretty hot. Typical summer day back there. My place was hot, being upstairs and all, and not having any kind of air circulation, what with the only one window and all. So it was pretty sticky up there.
I didn’t have a phone, remember? So I went down to the Red Rooster. Put a dime in the coin-op phone and called up Steve, and said What’s doin’, man? and he agreed to meet me by the tracks.
We really didn’t have anything in mind. We sat there, just across the tracks from the store, by the lake, and smoked some weed. Rob and Richie came by. And we smoked some more weed. And it was hot. We were all pretty bored by then.
When Rog came by, we kinda perked up. Because we always got such a laugh out of him. I dunno, man. I still don’t really know what his trip was. Retarded, maybe? Crazy? Fucked in the head from too many drugs? I dunno. But man, that dude was weird.
Remember his hair? That big fuckin’ fro? Never seen that on a white guy before. Big fuckin’ fro. On that long skinny body. And him always cruising on that bike with the banana seat. Looked like some kinda freak, man. Like an overgrown kid with a really old face, all wrinkled and hardcore tanned from the sun, and those perma-stoned looking half-closed eyes. Or maybe they were crazy eyes.
Wasn’t he French? He talked funny. Yeah, I think he was French. Whatever. It was one more thing to make fun of.
That day, when he came by the tracks where me and Steve and the guys were smoking, we were bored, so we asked if he wanted a toke. He said yes. And I guess it started there.
Nothing much happened at first. We just sat there, smoking and talking, watching the geese and whatnot on the lake. Then a train went by. And we all shut up because the rumble was so fuckin’ loud, we couldn’t have heard each other anyway.
As this train is rumbling past, Rog starts shaking. Like, his whole body… vibrating. First he’s just sitting and then he’s standing up, and it turns into this whole, like, spastic kinda dance. He’s mouthing something, but we can’t hear him. Can’t hear anything over the train. After it’s passed, he looks at us all bug-eyed and smiling. Says, Hey you guys, wanna do some shrooms?
Of course we do. Shrooms, man. Like, instant escape from boredom. Only trouble is, Rog doesn’t have them on him; he’s got them stashed in Canoe.
Canoe, man. Like… really. What kinda dimwit shit is that? Why would anyone stash their drugs like, 10 miles away?
But Rog was a freak, right? And we had nothing else to do. So we said Yeah, sure, let’s go to Canoe.
I dunno how much time you’ve spent down there, but it’s a hole, man. Really depressing. All these little houses, and they’re all sort of home-made. Like, no right angles or anything, anywhere. But it’s so out in the backwoods, it’s sort of safe. Or feels safe, anyway. And maybe that’s why Rog stashed his drugs there. He thought Canoe was safe.
No one had a car so we hitchhiked. Me, Steve, Rob, Richie and Rog with his fuckin’ bike. I kept telling him to just fuckin’ ride to Canoe on his bike and we’d meet him there, but he’d latched onto us and wasn’t letting go, and it was really starting to get on my nerves.
Just because a guy’s gonna give you drugs doesn’t mean he’s your new best friend. But sometimes you have to play like that. At least till you get what you want.
So there we are on the highway... the TCH... in the blazing sun, five guys and a bike. No one’s gonna pick us up, I keep saying, over and over. Like, who’s got room for five guys AND a fuckin’ bike? Most of what’s go
44: My first home
44: My first home
Or, at least, the first one I can remember since I lived in another home in Ocean View until I was two.
9426 Atwood Ave, Ocean View, Norfolk, VA 23503. The school where I attended pre-K and kindergarten is right up the street, a beautiful Art Deco monstrosity, and a building that had that unique scent of "old" that actually smelled good.
We moved into this house in 1981 when I was just two. Our room, the one my sister and I shared, is the double windows on the right. Our room was pink and featured bunk beds made up with Strawberry Shortcake bedding. The kitchen was painted a super bright orange, and had a fake brick backsplash behind the stove. I was always fascinated by that fake brick as I rinsed the dishes that my sister washed, mainly because it looked substantial but was really just plastic.
To the right of the house is a dirt driveway leading to the enormous backyard in which we spent many happy hours, playing on our old metal swingset. We even camped out back the summer my grandmother stayed with us, since we had to give up our bedroom for her to stay in. One time the neighborhood kids and I were playing Red Rover, and right as I went to break through their arms, the kids let go -- and I landed on my face in the dirt of the driveway. I used to love to take my bike with the training wheels and straddle the ruts of the driveway, so I would pedal and pedal and pedal but go nowhere. That driveway was bordered by a huge bush of honeysuckle that smelled heavenly when it was in bloom.
It's amazing all the things I remember from living in this house, especially when you consider that I only lived here full-time for four years. But I suppose it's something burned into my memory, something I'll never forget.
Day 19 - The Collective
Day 19 - The Collective
Day 19 - Mountain bike ride. 2.5 hour GMBC ride on slightly drier trails than last night!
It was a different challenge on tonight's club ride than yesterday's. Today the struggle was keeping up with the front while keeping an eye/ear out to make sure you had someone behind so the group didn't split.
When you're whizzing along having fun it's quite tricky to remember to check the person behind hasn't missed the turning you just took.
It might not seem important but the group gets fragmented easily with all the different abilities and it is meant to be a sociable thing plus if someone falls or has a mechanical then they could get left behind.
It's a case of remembering you're part of a club or a collective; one for all and all for one sort-of-thing. So what is the collective noun for a group of mountain bikers? Any suggestions?
A rack of bikers? A faff? A tumble? A multi-tool?
No prizes - it's just for fun!!
Broadway malls, Jun 2008 - 199
Broadway malls, Jun 2008 - 199
Between 112-113th Street, on the east side of Broadway, I happened upon a chess game being played on the sidewalk, right next to the curb. The table was an old slab of wood resting on a milk crate, and the small skull with a potted plant was an interesting decoration whose purpose I never did learn.
********************
Among the spectators watching the chess game was this bicycle-helmeted man and his daughter. They seemed quite interested in what was going on, though I don't know if the little girl understood any of the chess moves at all...
Between 112-113th Street, taken from the east side of Broadway, heading south. In late June, I spent three afternoons walking up and down Broadway, on Manhattan's Upper West Side, from 72nd Street to Columbia University at 115th Street. My objective was to photograph the variety of people sitting on park benches along what is formally known as the "Broadway malls" -- ie., benches located on the north side and south side of the median strip that separates the uptown side of Broadway from the downtown side.
Since my travels did encompass three separate days, I saw an even wider variety than I might have seen on a single afternoon; on the other hand, the pictures all reflect a single season. At Toni's suggestion, I'm going to make a similar photo-journal in the fall, winter, and spring -- to see if there are entirely different people, or whether it's basically the same people, but wearing different clothes...
In any case, on this occasion I saw young and old, black and white, men and women, rich and poor -- students, children, retired people, widows, widowers, homeless people, construction workers, babysitters, and tourists. As is common in today's society, a remarkable number of them were chatting on cellphones; but it was refreshing to see that many of them were chatting with each other. It was also a little sad to see several people sitting alone, with a wistful, melancholy look on their face.
Most of the park benches were occupied, though a few were empty. Most of the empty benches were fairly uninteresting, but a few looked sufficiently inviting that I felt they deserved a photo of their own.
For the most part, I ignored the photo opportunities that I saw on the sidewalk as I strolled along. But there were two major exceptions, as you'll see midway through this collection: a young man with a bubble-making gadget, blowing the largest soap-bubbles I have ever seen; and a chess game between two middle-aged men. I also photographed a few of the street signs along the way -- actually, I photographed *every* street sign, so that I could identify (and geotag) the location of all the other photographs.
I must have looked fairly serious as I went about my picture-taking activities, for three different people asked me if I was a photographer; and two different people asked me if I liked the Nikon D300 that I was using. As for the subjects of the pictures: most didn't even realize I was photographing them, for I took advantage of a long telephoto lens to shoot them from afar. But a few did notice, and I got a couple of smiles and scowls. If any of them do happen to stumble upon the Flickr site where these pictures will live, I hope they'll feel I've treated them kindly... I love them all ...
When I was a little girl, the bike of my dreams was the Schwinn Hollywood, pale, creamy white with mauve accents. What I got was a Schwinn Hollywood, in a metallic fuschia. The color was a huge disappointment, it was not the iconic paint scheme, but I came to appreciate its uniqueness. (I never saw another in that color.) I came across this one at the Oak Park library, clearly a much-used (and abused) version of my dream ride!
