Falling

Falling

In Falling, Christopher Pike explores the depth and breadth of human emotion through two brilliantly etched characters: Kelly Feinman, who pays a terrible price to understand the nature of true evil; and Matt Connor, a classic anti-hero who captures the reader's sympathy.

Kelly Feinman: Once a brilliant FBI profiler and field agent, Kelly went rogue on her last case, hunting the serial killer known as the Acid Man. Now, still recovering from the madman's brutal assault, regarded by her fellow agents as a weak link, Kelly struggles to find her footing on a new case: the kidnapping of an infant, Jimmy Techer. Making matters worse, Kelly's husband has taken their daughter and left. Kelly fears she cannot even trust her own instincts.

Matt Connor: Deeply in love with his girlfriend, Matt is devastated when Amy leaves him for another man. He plots a diabolical revenge that begins with his apparent death. By the time Matt is through, Amy--Jimmy's mother--will know the intensity of Matt's pain, because it will have become her own. And Matt…Matt will pass through the fires of hell and, in the eyes of baby Jimmy, will recover his soul.

Matt Connor is a kidnapper. Kelly Feinman is the agent on his trail. They should be enemies. Instead, they become friends, and together, they help each other become whole.

Barrier Lake

Barrier Lake

Barrier Lake was our first stop on a beautiful drive through Kananaskis yesterday. Friends very kindly invited me to go with them for the day, as they needed to check out the Mt. Lorette area before the Golden Eagle migration takes place just a few minutes' drive away from this lake. We were lucky that a group of people were taking kayak lessons while we were there. After endless rain and grey-skied days (a whole summer of it!), we were so lucky to have a decent day yesterday. A healthy mix of sun and cloud went perfectly with the fall colours that suddenly seem to have appeared. Today, we are back to rain, and more rain in the forecast. Thanks, D and S for such a wonderful day!

Barrier Lake is located approximately 80 km west of Calgary city limits, so takes about an hour to drive there. The Barrier Lake Visitor Information Centre is located 6 km (3.6 miles) south of the Trans-Canada Highway, on Highway 40. If you ever get the chance, Highway 40 takes you on a spectacular scenic loop through Kananaskis!

Barriers to faith

Barriers to faith

Barrier to faith, grand mosque, Kuwait.

The Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the State of Kuwait covering 20,000 square metres surrounded by gardens with a variety of flowers, plants, palm trees, fountains and waterfalls. The Main Prayer Hall (seen here) is 72 metres wide on both sides, has 21 teakwood doors and lighting is provided by 144 windows.

At the time of Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be peace, there were no barriers separating male and female members of the congregation, men simply prayed in front, with the women behind them. Today, almost, if not every mosque erects a barrier separating the genders. You have to ask, if following his example is so important, why isn't it being followed in what should be the holiest of places, the mosques?

In general, innovation investment has a balanced spread across this matrix. However, JISC's emphasises

"taking the risks that institutions would not normally take themselves" while institutions tend to be

responsible for low risk incremental innovation (although clearly institutions do take risks in innovation and

varying levels of risk are acceptable dor different systems/developments). Overall, JISC seeks to balance its

investment portfolio largely in the remaining three quadrants of semi-radical and radical innovation, with

some activities attempting to support good practices and processes without significant change to existing

software and services, while others seek to introduce innovative new services and software that fit into

existing practices and processes without demanding significant change, although the majority of innovation

efforts will require both in varying degrees.

dear private company: "nice" "try"

dear private company:

I just found this notice hanging on the mailbox with a pee bottle attached. It's from a private company NOT affiliated with the health department or water utilities commission, trying to get me to provide them with a sample of our tap water so that they can analyse it and then try to sell us a purification system.

Fat freaking chance, losers, and here's why:

1. I do not do your market research for free for you. You should be paying people to do it.

2. You must think people are stupid if you expect them to fall for a trap that will open them up to receiving annoying targeted junk mailings.

3. Home water purification systems are as much a crock as the bottled water industry. I pay taxes in order to have clean water come out my taps and I trust that. And it's healthy and clean.

4. Your scare "quotes" make me question the intent of your instructions and also the intelligence of your copywriters.

5. Your half-page notice contains four different typefaces for no apparent reason. This is abhorrent to me.

I am kind of tempted to return the bottle filled with apple juice and write a bunch of crazy stuff on the questionnaire but I don't really want to open myself up to further communication from these people.

Tashiro-shuku

I should note that this is a really nice, spacious, well maintained private company park, with plenty of room for children to run and jump with a low fence that is designed to say "ha ha, you can't come in" and the surrounding public parks are a mess of weeds and broken equipment full of garbage and the children of the workers that work for Hisamitsu that I did see in that area were playing on the street.

Now, I am not one to say how other people should spend their money, but I felt a deep sadness walking by here, a drop of beauty, in a cement wastelandt, that is for the benefit of a very few (maybe only 1) people while the kids are left without a decent place to play.

The irony is that the Nakatomi foundation, created by the Nakatomi family that founded Hisamitsu, lists "scientific research on the promotion of health, predominantly involving exercise" as one of its two objectives.

Hirotaka Nakatomi; open up your private park!

UNHCR/ B. Gysembergh/ 1978

UNHCR Appeals for 15.5 million dollars for assistance to refugees from Burma in Bangladesh.

GENEVA - May 1978. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Poul Hartling, today appealed to governments for US$ 15,565,000 to finance a humanitarian assistance programme for refugees recently arrived in Bangladesh from Burma.

UNHCR has been requested by the United Nations Secretary-General to coordinate the response of the United Nations system on behalf of this group of refugees, and has drawn up an assistance programme in cooperation with other UN agencies and the voluntary agencies concerned.

Some 150,000 refugees have arrived in Bangladesh from the Arakan State of Burma during the past weeks; almost half are under 15 years of age. Out of the total, 113, 000 have been installed in 8 camps located south of Chittagong. The influx continues and the Government of Bangladesh estimates that the number is likely soon to reach 200,000.

In view of the dramatic nature of the situation the Government of Bangladesh has taken emergency measures in order to meet the immediate needs of the refugees as have voluntary agencies and the UN agencies on the spot: The World Food Programme (WFP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. UNICEF for its part has made a preliminary contribution of $ 500,000 from its Emergency Fund. Following a request for assistance by the Government of Bangladesh, coordination machinery was set up in order to ensure maximum efficiency for the humanitarian action of the United Nations system.

The programme drawn up by UNHCR estimates needs for 200,000 persons over a period from May to December 1978. It includes the requirements presented in the appeal recently launched by the League of Red Cross Societies. The total value of requirements for this period is estimated at US$ 15,565,000, including food (wheat, sorghum, rice, vegetable oil, dried skim milk etc), valued at US$ 7.9 million. UNHCR has expressed the hope that the food component of the programme be covered by government through contribution in kind. The programme is also aimed at covering the needs of the refugees in the field of health, shelter and clothing.

MY LAST BCA PHOTOS FOR 2011 (Best viewed in LARGE)

I thought I had posted all of my BCA photos until I ran across these. Now you know I could have just waited with the rose in a kaleid frame, but the ones of Zoe, well, I had to post those.
She inspires hope within me. I know God sent her, against all odds to my daughter, for the whole family. She is our gift from God. A great reason all by herself for me to take good care of my body and try to be there for her as long as the Good Lord permits.
Thanks to all of you who have posted forr Breast Cancer Awareness in 2011. For that matter, we ALL want a cure for ALL cancers. While breast cancer4 is devastating and kills many women every year, the leading cause of death is from ALL sorts of cancer. If there is ever to be a cure it may come from different sources and for different reasons, It will have the HAND OF GOD in it as well as medical research.
Be aware and have physical exams once a year for ALL TYPES of cancer and especially this one. Breast cancer can be beat! Once you have cancer, there is always a chance that you can get it again, but let's concentrate on the positive and hope and pray that we can help save some lives this year. God bless you for the courage to speak out, you who are now undergoing the treatments for BC, and for those survivors, we praise the Lord for every moment you live! We will keep you in our prayers always. Be strong and be aware and CARE! JJ

** A special thanks to my Flickr sisters and friends for making a team effort and posting so many beautiful BCA kaleids. You are the best and we thank you honey! GOD BLESS YOU!

Toil and Spoil

Toil and Spoil

'Toil and Spoil' - Bloemfontein City, Free State Province - South Africa.

Absolutely cannot get enough of the roadworks and people participating in upgrading the road infrastructure around the country not only to accommodate tourists come 2010 and the Fifa world cup but also to enhance and help any trucking and ordinary South African road user which had to endure years of road neglect and it's famous potholes which caused havoc for any driver unfortunate enough to drive over (or inside) one. ^_^ Roads are getting better and better and I hope this would be an insightful / nostalgic look back to 2010 in future years and generations.
