A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture -- effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box.

The most basic form of a camera in which no lens is used. A pinhole camera is made by making a lightight container and poking a pinhole in the front of the camera where a lens would go.

A camera whose lens is covered except for a pin-sized hole. You have a very small aperture, so you have to shoot long exposures.

Pinhole Camera

This is my latest pinhole camera creation, which I have been working on for the past month or so. It has been a while, but I decided that it was probably about time that I should consider building a pinhole camera completely from scratch; as apposed to modifying an existing camera (which I have already done a few times).

The camera itself is not quite complete yet. I still need to paint the insides of the camera black, devise an actual "pinhole" for the camera, as well as drill out a notch for the film take-up spool.

The main materials used where basically cardboard (from an old shoebox), and Popsicle sticks for the inner framework of the body, film housing, shutter and the rear cover. I used plastic bottle caps for both the advance and rewind knobs. As well as an old wooden bird cage perch, which I used to make the take-up and rewind spools.

The main goal of this project was to build the best pinhole camera that I could; using items and materials around the house as much as I could. So far, I have spent approximately $0.00 on building this camera.

I have to admit that this was a pretty good "thinking project"; a lot of considerations where made in the design and construction of the camera. Such as figuring out a way to make the camera completely "light-tight" (which is very important), also calculating the optimum distance between the film and the pinhole, as well as the ideal diameter of the pinhole, film type/size, etc. Not to mention trying to be as resourceful as I could in making all the individual parts; using materials around the house. The only real thing that I have to figure out now would be the number of turns of the "advance wheel" needed to advance the film roughly one frame. From what I can gather, about one to one and a half turns seems to do the trick. I guess I will not know for sure until I actually run a roll of film through it.

I am eagerly waiting for spring/summer, I hope to get out and take a lot of neat pictures this year with this camera (once it is finished of course).

Pinhole Camera

When I was a kid, perhaps around 11 years old, I made a pinhole camera from scratch. I believe it was for part of my photography merit badge in Boy Scouts.

Here's the photo I took with that pinhole camera to earn my badge. This scan is from a contact print I made myself from the negative. The exposure time for this shot was 30 seconds. This is the scene from the porch of the house I grew up in. The same day, I shot a 35 mm photo of the same scene with my little Petri camera.

I plan to put together a set of all the images related to the pinhole camera project. The final set will include a sequence of 35mm photos showing the construction, the 35mm shot of the same scene from the porch, and a scan directly from the original negative.

Worlds within Worlds

You know the effect you get with two almost parallel mirrors, the one that gives you multiple copies of yourself extending off into infinity in both directions? Or the camera-looking-at-monitor-showing-camera-looking-at-monitor effect? That's what this is.

You should see (in the real-life outermost level) my souvenir TEDxOntarioEd shirt, my new Apple Wireless bluetooth keyboard, my iPad, and a set of iPhone earbuds. Then, on the screen of the iPad, you should be able to see the same items replicated (not quite 180 degree rotation) one level in. Then, on the screen of the picture-of-the-iPad on the iPad, you should see the same again. And so on.

I shot this image using a unique new pair of apps called Camera-A (which you install on the iPad) and Camera-B (which you install on the iPhone). Although the first incarnation of the iPad does not have a camera, this simple pair of apps lets you use your iPhone camera to send the live image directly (via WiFi or Bluetooth) to your iPad. On the iPad are the controls to manage the taking of the photograph -- you can see my finger (not in real life, but in the first level iPad image) pressing the button to activate the picture. So although the iPad is not caputuring video, you essentially have live-motion appearing on the iPad as if it were a monitor connected to a video cam -- you then do a still capture from the iPad when you have the image you want.

It would have been nice to have this installed for last night's event, as it is much easier to easily tweet out text/image combos with the iPad keyboard. As it was, however, any such combos were sent from my iPhone, with the much smaller keys. (I tried using Fliq from my iPhone to my MBP, but it wasn't taking over the WiFi network.)

Next time, however, I'll have Camera-A and Camera-B

(I typed this entry with the BT keyboard, connected to the iPad. Almost like using my notebook. So Cool!)

What's in my camera bag

The bag is a Canon kit-bag from when I bought an EOS 300 back in 2002. Great bag.
There is only room for 2 rangefinders in the bag.

Ususally I have ISO 400 in the Leica M6 and ISO 1600 in the Bessa R4M.

I also have spare batteries for the light meters in the cameras, a lame hama table tripod (never used it) and a wire shutter release.

I've always been a gadget geek. I always buy the latest things. It's an addiction.

I bought my first digital camera a couple of months ago. I had not been taking photos for 8 years and I had never owned a digital camera.

The first question I asked myself was: "I wonder if Leica has a digital rangefinder?"

And they had one. The problem was the price.

So.. I bought a Sony Nex-5 instead. Actually a great camera, but it's not my style.
I had to have a Leica.. so I bought a Leica M6. It's great. It's really my style.

Then I found a Bessa R4M. It's great. It's really my style too.
I found myself leaving the Sony Nex at home every day only using the older cameras.

I sold the Sony Nex to a great english bloke. And then I sold some other stuff to.

I knew I had to get the Leica M9. And I did. It's crazy. I know.

The only things missing now are some really good lenses :)

Nadine Off Camera Shoot

Taken with my D300S and Nikkor 18-55mm VR Kit Lens in RAW. This is the first opportunity I have had recently to try an outside off camera flash shoot. This was taken on the Black Mountain, Carmarthenshire at sunset using a single Nikon Speedlight SB28 with CTO gel at 1/1 through a shoot through umbrella high up to camera left just above Nadine and pointing down. Triggered with Cactus V2s.

Am hoping to upgrade my 18-55mm to the Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC soon it is supposedly a great deal sharper and generally nicer (and obviously faster) than the kit lens.

Edited in Lightroom 3. I like the high key look and the tones of this preset.

35 mm film is the basic film gauge most commonly used for chemical still photography (see 135 film) and motion pictures, and remains relatively unchanged since its introduction in 1892 by William Dickson and Thomas Edison, using film stock supplied by George Eastman.

A small format film, with an image size of 24 x 36mm available in 12, 24 or 36 exposures. It is the most commonly used film size, but does not offer the quality of medium or large format, because this small negative must be enlarged quite a bit in the darkroom loosing it's clarity and sharpness.

The standard film gauge for films intended to be shown in cinemas. Depending on the film stock being used, 35mm film is capable of producing an image of sufficient detail to fill even a large cinema screen.

Sony Nex-5 Custom Lens

A lot of friends and interested parties asked how I took some of the interesting photos. And here's the secret.

I'm using CCTV lens that's connected to most closed circuit cameras or used as movie camera lens. With a proper adapter, I can literally match it to my Sony Nex-5 with ease. As you know everything is manual, you can really get some very interesting photos depending on how you use it.

I've on this page a 7mm, 25mm, 35mm and 75mm lens ... all have different functions and my favourite is 35mm. It doesn't cost a lot but the quality is awesome.

My 50p car boot sale Balda Baldamatic 1 Rangefinder 35mm Camera & Schneider-Kreuzneck Xenar f2.8 45mm Lens mounted in a Synchro-Compur Shutter. It also has a built in exposure meter linked to the shutter aperture ring which adjusts the depth of field red markers! The camera is marked with a transfer as originating from Wallace Heaton Ltd. Not much more I can say about this camera except it is in feels like a Leica or Contax in build quality and finish.

Camera Mamiya C3

This was one of the earlier of Mamiya's twin lens reflex cameras, manufactured in 1964. The revolutionary design included interchangeable lenses, complete with light tight internal shuttering to make this possible mid film.

I used one of these during my work for The Rank Organisation, during the mid 1960s. Had to give it back when I left, so obtaining one for my collection was a must. There is more kit here than when I had it way back then.

Here we see the 80mm normal lens fitted to the camera and a 30mm wide angle to the left and a 250mm telephoto to the right.

The strange device at the front is a Paramender. This, when fitted between tripod and camera, moves the taking lens (the lower of the two) into the position previously occupied by the viewing lens. This corrects the parallax error that occurs when photographing closer subjects.

This camera produces 12 2?" square negatives on a 120 roll. The film winder is arranged to allow fast film advance.

Wedding Kit - What's in my bag

Due to back issues I'm whittling down my wedding kit to the essentials. I'll have a very wide lens, a very fast one, and the best do-everything lens along with great lighting. Sure my full kit will be in the car for back up, but this is all I'm carrying and I'm sure it'll work supremely well.

Basically before I wasn't carrying the 2nd body. I also didn't have the 24-105mm/4. Instead I used a 20-35mm/2.8 L, Tamron 28-75mm/2.8, and a 80-200mm/4-5.6 plus the 55mm and the 16mm pictured. I really only used the 80-200 during the ceremony. I also spent a lot of time switching lenses. I'm -hoping- the 24-105 is wide enough and long enough to adaquately cover those three lenses I'm no longer carrying.

I tried putting the 24-105 on my Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c (FF), and now I -really- want a 5d. The Kodak just can't handle the low light or high iso.

Somewhat obviously, the 40d, bracket, and flash don't go in the bag. The Turbo battery however does fit.

It was a cheaper tripod and served its purpose, but considering how often I use a tripod I thought it was time for an upgrade. This one is really kind of cool. The center shaft comes off and can be mounted like you see in the picture. I can think of a few times this would have come in handy in the past.

You just can't do a decent panorama or pan shot with the ball head like you can with the pan and tilt. I would also like (in the future sometime) to get a straight panorama head. This one is really heavy duty and should last me for a long long time.

The building is open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from April to September and the 1st Sunday of each month from October to March. There is also a web cam, which is switched on 24/7. The webcam is on the top of the lighthouse and during daylight hours shows a view from the top of Leasowe Lighthouse. This is a screenshot still taken from the BBC and BFI film 'The Lost World of Mitchell and Kenyon', a fascinating insight into the late Victorian and Edwardian world of north England.

Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon were early commercial cinematographers based in Blackburn Lancashire. After their company went out of business in the 1920s the 800 films of their archive were sealed in steel barrels and lay undiscovered until 1994. They have now been restored by the British Film Institute.

Note the Tram rails.. The cameraman is almost certainly on the upper deck of a tram.

the old toy, retiring

I got my Olympus 4040 in 2002, right before going to Shanghai. It was a great camera at the time - the best you could get under $1000. I didn't know a thing about photography when I got it. I still don't know enough to take good photos consistently, but at least I know my aperture from my shutter speed and my white balance from my ISO.

My 4040 started losing its luster a few years back. Instead of spending a grand on the SLR I wanted, I stuck that Kenko zoom lens on it. It was like getting a brand new piece. That $150 lens extended my 4040's life 2 more years.

But recently the photo quality has been terrible, no matter how much I cleaned the lens or fiddled with settings. Looking at my Cambodia pics, I knew it was finally time to open the wallet and go SLR. Lucky for me, the timing was just right - You can get a D40 for less than $500 right now if you're patient and poke around for specials.

Some Kind of Bird (Day 67)

[Sunday, March 8] Today I took my camera with me as I went to store to get food for dinner. On the way is Fourth Ward Park, a favorite spot for dog-walkers and people looking for a more scenic route.

The birds were out in force, and don't really have much fear of people. I have no idea what kind of bird this is, but they dart around fairly quickly, making it rather hard to get good focus. Compounding the problem was non-optimal lighting, forcing a slower shutter speed. Out of the 30 or so pictures I took, this was the best, but still a little soft in places.

Yea! I have a new lens. The Nikon 70-300mm. I've been wanting a longer telephoto for a long time, but it just wasn't in the budget. This week the stars alligned with an IRS refund on the way and a Wolf Camera going out of business sale which put this lens over a $100 less than regular price. We were in Charlotte, NC for a soccer tournament and just happened to drive by the Wolf store on our way to the hotel. The soccer photos were much improved for that last game. So exciting!
