39 Allann Jon VENTER

Allann Jon has kept his good form up and put his MAP Triumph in 8th place on the grid at Cadwell Park. Yesterday in the first free practice session he was 3rd with the track still damp in sections. The second free practice was run in wet conditions. After a discussion with the team both AJ and his team mate Jimmy Hill opted not to go out. Both had previously practiced in the wet there and had a satisfactory set up already. This left an extra set of tyre stickers for use in Qualifying if they were needed. The amount of tyres that a rider can use on a race weekend is limited and controlled by the use of coloured stickers.

Saris Cycle Glide

Saris Cycle Glide

Free up floor space in your garage or basement. The Cycle-Glide gives individual access to each bike without having to remove adjacent bikes while offering compact nesting. Wheel hooks automatically adjust to the bicycle wheel base to accommodate a wide range of bicycle designs. Allows access and compact storage of 4 bikes. Finally - A Company That Loves Bikes as Much as You Do...Chances are, your bikes are just like ours - your most valued possessions. And whether it has the Saris or CycleOps name on it, nothing we build goes out the door unless it's worth putting those possessions on. Call it obsessive. Call it eccentric. We just chalk it up to caring a hell of a lot about creating the last rack or training system you'll ever need. Pedal to the People - At Saris, building energy for positive change starts in the bike world. But it doesn't stop there. We're passionate about creating more space for cyclists in our communities. More bikes mean less congestion, less pollution, and healthier, more active people. In addition to our own local and national efforts, we support the work of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, Bikes Belong, People for Bikes, and other key advocacy groups. We realize, though, that it takes more than increasing bike ridership to build a healthy community. That's why you'll find us devoting our time and resources — as a company and as individuals — to worthy causes like Boys and Girls Clubs and Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin. Is a better, healthier community good for business? Sure. But it's not just about profits. Being more successful allows us, in return, to give more back to the community. It's a virtuous cycle that benefits us all.

Get your bikes up and off the floor and store them neatly and efficiently with the Cycle Glide ceiling mounted rack from Saris. The Cycle Glide can hold up to four bikes weighing up to 50-pounds each--of virtually any frame size--thanks to automatically adjustable wheel hooks. Meanwhile, the rack's patented Glider design allows you to access each bike individually, without having to remove the other bikes from the rack. With the addition of a two-bike add-on (sold separately), you can expand the Cycle Glide to store of up to six bikes.

Ducati 1098S Motor Bike Birthday Cake

Ducati 1098S Motor Bike Birthday Cake

This large Birthday Cake (16" x 12") has kept me pretty occupied for the past couple of days!

The bike is copied from a photograph of the recipient's own bike and done freehand in bas relief in fondant and sugar(gum)paste.
The name and age have been done to (hopefully!) resemble the Ducati logo writing.
I don't normally leave the cake board silver, but on this cake I felt it looked right. There is a narrow black ribbon round the base of the cake and black ribbon with a narrow red stripe in the middle round the edge of the board.

This was partially inspired by the amazing sculpted cake that Debbie (debbiedoescakes) did of another Ducati bike a while ago.

We are delivering this up to London tomorrow.

Yesterday's cycling

Yesterday's cycling

I spent a bunch of time yesterday biking. I've been trying to do some cycling every weekend, on top of my regular commute (5 miles each way, every workday). This is partially because I want to build up to randonee form, but also because it's damn fun.

So I've been mostly doing road-ish cycling of late, which means that my triathlete boss's urging that I really need to get a road bike and ride that more has been resounding.

This weekend, I randomly decided to bike to Fremont Older, which has a number of nice mountain bike trails. As always, I started at home and biked there (which was a good move, because the parking lot for the park was packed, but also because I'm too cheap to buy a bike rack for the car). And I grabbed the map and started riding.

Now, the thing about mountain biking vs. road biking is that mountain bike trails are usually akin to hiking trails. So, there might be a 50% upward grade, but it's not going to be that long before things flatten out a little bit. The technique for extreme grades like this, to prevent your front wheel from lifting off the dirt, is to get your center of gravity low to the ground and towards the front of the bike, which is where bar ends come in handy. It was fairly taxing, but again, the Wirehead of 2 years ago wouldn't have gotten anywhere at all.

It was a little fun at points because of all of the ruts in the dirt from people riding their horses in wet weather. I was glad to have the suspension on my bike, that's for sure.

I made it up to the highest point of the park, Maisie's Peak, which is around 1100 ft above sea level, before heading back.

On the way home, it was rather fun because some roadies on a ride came up behind me. I realized they weren't going above my top speed on a mountain bike, so I sat there behind the last guy, but outside of wheel-sucking range, riding at somewhere around 25mph the whole time. I kept pace with them until I veered off. I think they call that being a "Fred".

Urban Assault NTV

Urban Assault NTV

For those who care this is a list of the work I did to get this bike back on the road:

-- Replace front forks (both bent, one snapped)
-- Replace front wheel (brake disc bent)
-- Replace front mudguard (destroyed)
-- Replace radiator, fan and assorted tubing (smashed)
-- Replace handlebar (bent)
-- Straighten headlight mounts (bent)
-- Replace foot brake lever (twisted)
-- Replace rear brake pad (worn to the metal)
-- Respray front mudguard, gas tank matt black
-- Stencil stuff on the side

All in all a pretty insane amount of work. All the parts are second hand and were dirt-cheap because this bike is so common every other guy in London has one sitting in parts in a shed somewhere. Can't do that with a Ruckus, at least not yet. I don't even wanna think what all these parts would have cost from Honda, or what a mechanic would have charged me for all this work...

Viscount framed single speed with fenders. Brooks Flyer saddle. Tange fork. Ma3 rims. Conversion to single was done by using spacers on the cassette hub, a Shimano DX bmx cog, and a lockring.

Visount bikes were a brand in the 70s that were made in England from very thin "aerospace" tubing. Their selling point was being decent and very light for a good price. Their claim to fame, however, was selling a model with a cast aluminum fork that tended to snap off, the death fork.

This one as built is a bit heavy, around 24 pounds since I've used very durable parts to make a maintenance free bike. It's still nice and fast though, and the ride is stately due to the long wheelbase, wider 28c tires and fork rake. Not twitchy one little bit.

sheldonbrown.com has more info on this brand.

The Campus Guide: Cranbrook

The newest titles in the Princeton Architectural Press Campus Guide series take readers on an insider's tour of the University of Washington in Seattle, Rice University in Houston, and Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Beautifully photographed in full color, the guides present architectural walks at three of America's finest campuses, revealing the stories behind the historic and contemporary buildings, gardens, and works of public art.
The community of Cranbrook, designed by Eliel Saarinen, combines modernism with arts-and-crafts and art deco impulses; more recently, Steven Holl, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, and Rafael Moneo have made contributions to Cranbrook's campus.

Cranbrook Mill

Cranbrook Mill

To give her full name Cranbrook Union mill is a living museum still producing flour when the wind is over 15mph and the volunteers can get there. Cranbrook is a particuarly tall mill because when she was built all nearby hils had been taken by other mills. As a result she was built in the centre of Cranbrook and had to be taller than average to rie above the wind turbulence caused by rooftops.

Cranford

The BBC drama series adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's classic novels of small town gossip, secrets and romance. 1842. Cranford, a market town in the North West of England, is a place governed by etiquette, custom and above all, an intricate network of ladies. It seems that life has always been conducted according to their social rules, but Cranford is on the cusp of change… For spinsters Deborah Jenkyns, the arbiter of correctness in Cranford, and Matty, her demurring sister, the town is a hub of intrigue - a handsome new doctor Frank Harrison from London has arrived; a retired Captain and his daughters have moved in to a house opposite and the preparations for Lady Ludlows garden party are underway. Everyone - from charming rogue Dr Marshland to mean Mrs Jamieson and her lap dog talks, and is talked about, behind closed doors. The town also has its secrets which it slowly reveals: Mattys encounter with an old flame at the garden party; Lady Ludlows gardener, Mr Carter, teaching a gypsy lad to read and write; the wild expectations of the May Day celebrations and - news that shakes the town when it is revealed - a railway line from Manchester is coming to Cranford.

Adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's novels, the five-episode miniseries Cranford focuses on female characters in the 19th-century British town to thematically contemplate encroaching modernity in rural England. With the camera roving house to house, each drama within the grander story is constructed of scenes featuring dialogue between several gossipy ladies obsessed with moral code, romantic ideas about courtship, and social occasions. Three main characters, the ever-appropriate Deborah Jenkyns (Eileen Atkins), her sweet sister, Matilda (Judi Dench), and their younger, more savvy relative, Miss Smith (Lisa Dillon), continuously weigh in on situations, providing a dependable view when other ladies, like the nosey Miss Pole (Imelda Staunton) are too judgmental. In fine period dress, the women of Cranford remind the viewer of how little action was needed in their small-town lives to provide unceasing entertainment. The series'most intriguing aspect lies not in the ample female conversation but rather in its display of earlier technologies and ways of life. Part One, for example, quickly launches a main narrative thread that runs throughout the series, namely the arrival and assimilation of London doctor, Frank Harrison (Simon Woods), into village society. Dr. Harrison's medical practices, such as his refusal to amputate a man's arm because it's broken, are all the more radical because they are so fundamental by today's standards. In subsequent episodes, he recommends Miss Smith get spectacles to cure her headaches, and saves his love's life by cooling her fever after conservative doctor, Dr. Morgan (John Bowe), recommends the old school practice of burying her in blankets in front of a raging fire. In Part Two, Lady Ludlow (Francesca Annis) throws a garden party at her estate, treating all the women in their fancy hats to a new novelty: ice cream. This scene foreshadows Ludlow's future concern at a railroad plan involving her land that would connect Cranford to Manchester, symbolizing the ruin of this idyllic setting.
In fact, fluffy and clever as some scenes are, death and rebirth assert themselves in each showing, both physically and idealistically. Part Four shows an auctioning off of a deceased man's antiques, and focuses on issues of class and women's education, as Mr. Carter teaches a peasant boy to read while his assistant fumes at her trappings as a seamstress. Part Five ushers in a new period of medical emergencies, securing Dr. Harrison's shaky position in town. In total, Cranford offers a powerful, if sentimental, look at how death begets life, love, and passion. --Trinie Dalton

High Rise Swiveling Bed Frame Caster Wheel, Adjustable Height, Set of 2

High Rise Swiveling Bed Frame Caster Wheel, Adjustable Height, Set of 2

The Problem:
More in-home storage space needed for seasonal decorations, out of season clothing, children's toys, or other items.

The Solution:
A good solution to the above problem is to increase under bed storage space. An easy, economical, and practical way to accomplish this is with the High Rise Bed Frame Adjustable Caster. This High Rise Caster will increase the height of your bed from the floor. This increase in bed height easily translates into increased under bed storage space.

Height Dimensions:
Unextended, the High Rise Bed Frame Adjustable Caster is approximately 6" in height (not counting the top shaft which will insert into the bedframe). Fully extended, the High Rise Bedframe Adjustable Caster is approximately 7 1/2" tall (not counting the top shaft which will insert into the bedframe). This caster will add approximately 4 1/2" to the height of your bed above the height provided by the typical caster. Including the height of the attachment point on the bedframe, the High Rise Caster can add up to an additional 12" in height to the bedframe.

Wheel Dimensions:
The wheel is approximately 2 1/8" wide and approximately 1 3/4" in diameter. The soft wheel is ideal for hard floors. Its soft construction will help prevent floor damage. Its wide stance also makes it ideal for carpet. The weight of the bed is spread out over a wider area as the wide wheel makes contact with the carpet.

Heavy-Duty Construction:
Swiveling casters and ball bearing construction guarantee easy mobility of your bed. The casters are equipped with foot activated brakes which firmly and securely lock the bed into a stationary position. These casters are built to last and perform well.

Plastic Plugs Included:
The included plastic plugs make replacing the existing standard casters easy.

Package Includes:
One package includes 1 Set of 2 High Rise Adjustable Casters with 2 Plastic Plugs.

Do everything bike

Do everything bike

This was a great bike, completely at home on the road, on trails, or in snow. It had the dreaded 1.25" steerer, and for non related biking reasons there came a time, I couldn't bend forward comfortably with that reach (and no new stems with a higher rise were being made (or so I thought at the time)) I lgave it to a friend in New York who lazily left it locked up overnight one night, and that was the last it was seen, after 15 years of hard use. I chose this MTB model (bought it new in 1992) because it was the most like a roadbike made, road it very hard through Appalachia on successive trips. Fast, stable, comfortable essentially like a Range Rover claims to be; huge clearance for mud. If I ever come across this model of frame again, I'd pick it up in a flash. As it was in that photo it was barely 23 lbs...pretty impressive w a Brooks seat and fenders! Often when riding in NY people thought I was a cop, it has that "blues brothers retired cop car" look to it.

How sad to leave you.

This photo appeared in the following ideotrope albums:

Biking the Mojave Fall 2007 - Introduction
I biked through Death Valley in October 1996. It was 109°F at Furnace Creek. The area is beautiful, but it was way too hot at that time of year. I knew I wanted to come back on my bicycle when it was cooler. This year it worked out to take about 3 weeks after Thanksgiving. I ended up spending 18 days to cycle from Palm Springs to Las Vegas. I spent about half of that time in Death Valley NP. In Baker I met a group of cyclists on racing bikes with a support vehicle. They were cycling from Palm Springs to Las Vegas in 2 days. I saw a lot more desert than they did.
Coachella Valley and Joshua Tree National Park
I crossed the Coachella Valley on Ramon Rd. It was over 70°F, probably the warmest day of the trip. It wasn't 'til I turned onto Thousand Palms Rd. that I felt like I was heading out into the desert on my own. The San Andreas Fault system runs along the northern end of the Coachella Valley. The faults allow groundwater to rise to the surface resulting in a number of California fan palm oases. It's wonderful to see oases in the desert.
It was a 1300m climb on Berdoo Canyon Rd. to the Coachella Valley-Pleasant Valley saddle in Joshua Tree NP. I didn't see a single person or vehicle in Berdoo Canyon. Climbing out of Pleasant Valley I saw the first person, a fellow adventurer. Patrick was walking solo across Joshua Tree NP from west to east. That's a heck of a trek. That park is huge and has only one known spring. Patrick had set up two water caches before his trip.
Amboy Road and Mojave National Preserve
I bought enough food in 29 Palms to last 4 days to Baker. Heading east on the Amboy Rd. I met the only other touring cyclist of the trip. He had come down from Bishop through Death Valley NP, Baker, Kelso, Amboy - much the same route I was planning to take. When I met him, he had run out of food. I shared some almonds with him but didn't have much sympathy with his plight. The reason he didn't buy food in Baker was because there wasn't a health food store! Well, I told him there was a grocery store in 29 Palms, but it might not be up to his standard.
One of the things I was looking forward to on this trip was experiencing the transition zone between the Sonoran Desert (lower, farther south) and the Mojave Desert (higher, farther north). Creosote bushes grow in both, but most other flora is limited to one ecosystem or the other. In the transition zones you can see a mix of vegetation. What I saw ended up being less dramatic than Washington County, Utah where the Colorado Plateau, the Basin and Range country, and the Mojave Desert all come together. Joshua Trees were the main ecosystem indicator for me. I knew I was climbing high when I started to see them.
I was surprised how much traffic there was on the Amboy Rd. It wasn't much, but a lot of the paved roads that I was on during the trip would have one car every 10-30 minutes and perhaps none all night. The only truly busy roads were the road north out of Baker (on a Saturday morning) and the Pahrump-Las Vegas superhighway which has a wonderful bicycle lane.
I climbed Sheep Hole Pass to get into the Amboy Valley. It was in the Amboy Valley where I became accustomed two aspects important to cyclists in the Mojave:
Distances are deceiving. You can see really far. It takes much longer to cross these valleys that it appears that it would.
The slight inclines up alluvial fans or other fill climb a lot more than they appear to. In Colorado I'm not accustomed to seeing the whole climb since there are usually canyon climbs here. Leaving Amboy, for example, I climbed over 3000 ft. on a slowly rising alluvial plane. It took hours.
I enjoyed time off the bike to walk out to and up Amboy Crater. The following day I climbed to the top of the Kelso Dunes. And one day later I climbed one of the cinder cones east of Baker. I enjoyed having a diversion each day. Each of those areas is beautiful in its own way. The creosote bushes in the Amboy Valley are particularly green because of the shallow water table. Kelso Dunes are simply fantastic, and the cinder cone area with over 30 cinder cones and not another person felt like another planet.
In Baker I bought enough food to last 10 days and ate at the Mad Greek at my brother's recommendation. I had taken a rest day the previous day because of rain, and Baker was a bit flooded. Folks were out pushing water around with brooms. At the store the locals were telling each other how much their roofs leaked.
Death Valley National Park
Heading north of Baker the saddle that separates the Silurian Valley from Death Valley is only about a 50' climb. From there I left the pavement and stopped at Saratoga Springs to see the incredible wetlands in the desert. I had planned on climbing the Ibex Dunes, but wind was b

My mom has always had a thing for bicycles. When I was a kid (and I still am), it was my mom who fixed all the flat tires, loose chains, torn seats, bent wheels and crooked handlebars. The only thing that my dad did was buy those glittery gems that you stick on your spokes so that people could see you better at night. It was always my mom who did the heavy mechanical work. When I was in college, I never had to worry about having to buy a new bicycle or sending it in for repairs; I could just take it home on weekends. After a few hours, I would have a bicycle that was rideable again.

I had forgotten this until the day that Addy and I had come home from lunch to find my mom was missing during the hours that she would usually be home. "Where did she go," I asked my sister.
"She went to Kaiser to get medicine," my sister said.
"How did she get there? We took the only car that was home," I said.
"She rode her bike," she said.
"What do you mean she rode her bike?" I said.
"Exactly, I mean...she rode her bike," she said.

It was around five o' clock and I thought about all the cars on the road and my mom riding all the way to Kaiser on her own, so Addy and I drove to Kaiser to find her. I hoped she wasn't too far away from the house so that we could just give her a ride and get her off the streets. But we didn't see her along the way. By the time we reached her, she was unlocking the bicycle chain in front of the entrance. The center was closed so she was unable to get her refill. "What are you doing mom!?" I said when I saw her, "It's dangerous, don't you know?"
"It's not dangerous. What are you doing here?" she said.
"We came to give you a ride," I said.
"You didn't have to. Why are you making it such a big deal?" she said.
"I'm not. I just think it'd be better if you didn't ride your bike all the way here. Come on, I'll give you a ride back," I said.
"I don't want a ride back," she said, "I can just ride the bicycle back. It's not a big deal, you didn't have to come rushing out here."
"Come on, just let me give you a ride a back," I said.
"No. I will ride my bicycle back. Don't waste your time here," she said.
I relented and got back to the car. But we didn't go home right away, Addy and I followed her as she rode down the street.

At the crosswalk of a busy intersection, the chain on the bicycle came loose. She got off the bicycle and began to exmaine it. While she examined it, I parked the car in the parking lot of a nearby shopping plaza and ran out to her. "Look, the bicycle's broken, can you just get in the car and let me drive you home," I said.
"No. Go back. I'll just walk home okay?" she said. I was getting annoyed by her stubborness so I relented and let her walk back home. "Alright," I said, "I'll call you later or you call me when you get back." I felt guilty watching her walk across the street while towing her broken bicycle.

At around eight o'clock the next morning, it was a Saturday, I walked downstairs for a morning snack. I walked into the kitchen to see that my mom was already there, with the bicycle and a tool set on the floor. She was working on installing a new chain, which she had bought the day before, onto the bicycle. When i walked in, she was turning the wheel with her hand, making sure that the train travelled along it's path smoothly. She took a break to make breakfast for those who had started to wake up and by the time for her to get lunch ready, she was finished and was test riding it around the neighborhood.

126.365 - Scar

126.365 - Scar

I was absolutely uninspired today, so here is my favorite scar. I got it somewhere around third grade. I was biking as fast as I could to catch up with my big brother and his friend when the pedal fell off my bike! Of course I skidded out, and this was on a newly-paved road - but not paved with nice flat tar, no, it was some sort of very rocky jagged surface.

Needless to say, my entire kneecap was a bloody mess. That scar is about the size my knee was at that age, I think.

After I fell I couldn't really get up and walk (a feeling I've only ever had again when I broke my ankle), but my brother and his friend heard me screaming and brought me to the closest neighbor who we knew was home. I still remember how much the antiseptic hurt! And I remember her trying to clean out the chunks of gravel, until we realized they were actually just pieces of dead skin.

My mom once said she wondered if it'd have been better if I'd gotten stitches, if it would have scarred less, but I pointed out that 1) there wasn't any skin left TO stitch and 2) I don't mind the scar. It's part of who I am and I wouldn't be any happier without it. Plus if something hurts that bad, I figure it's better to have something to show for it.

So. That's the story of my favorite scar.

PS Yeah, I picked my scabs when I was a kid.

Pants Pass, a real kick in the pants

Pants Pass, a real kick in the pants

[chuck12600 photo] Pants Pass is what they call a knapsack pass, meaning it doesn't have a trail. It's that notch way up there, past steep loose piles of scree. We arrived here late in the day after a long hike, and everyone was pretty tired. I got here first and just started up to the pass. It became more and more difficult, with the sliding rock, to go forward. I heard yelling from way down below, "Come back, come back." We camped at the base that night, turned around and headed for Mt. Whitney, with a new trip plan.

Polar CS100B Cycling Computer Heart Rate Monitor (2008 Model)

Polar CS100B Cycling Computer Heart Rate Monitor (2008 Model)

The CS100 combines all the features of a high end cycle computer with a fully functional heart rate monitor. With key features like AutoStart, Autostop and Autolap you'll have everything you need for sport or fitness riding.

The handlebar-mounted Polar CS100 combines all the features of a high-end cycle computer with a fully functional heart rate monitor--the Polar T31 coded transmitter. (The similarly featured CS100B offers heart rate monitor compatibility, but does not come with a monitor.) The CS100 provides a full range of cycling computer functions, and adds three new features to Polar's arsenal: the Polar Cycling Coach (a Web-based coaching program and diary), estimated time of arrival (based on your speed), and automatic display scroll, which switches the information on the display according to your preferences. Features include:
Wireless ECG accurate heart rate with Polar OwnCode (5kHz) to prevent cross-talk from other heart rate monitors
Target heart rate zones with visual and audible alarms
Graphical comparison of heart rate and speed
Heart rate measurements: maximum of total and each lap, average of total
Cycling measurements: Speed (current, average and max); trip; distance
Calorie consumption rate per kilometer
Wheel size settings for two bicycles, speed sensor installation for different fork shapes
Automatic lap recording (up to 50 laps) with exercise date
Exercise file info page with date and time
Semi-automatic backlighting
Water resistance to 10 meters (protects against rain and splashes)
SpeedPointer: Points out the difference between average speed/pace and actual speed/pace on the display by up/down arrows.
Estimated Time of Arrival: Set the distance you are going to ride, and your cycling computer calculates the estimated time of arrival based on your cycling speed.
Polar OwnCal: Shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. Compatible with Polar WearLink 31 and Polar T61 coded transmitters
Manufacturer's Warranty
The original purchaser of this heart rate monitor is backed by a limited warranty that states that this product that the product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for two years from the date of purchase.

Polar heart rate monitors are precision instruments; consumers are not advised to change their own battery. Polar recommends that all service be done by an authorized Polar Service Center which will include a warranty for 90 days on repairs and 6 months for batteries.
About Polar
The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

Space Walk

Space Walk

Earth

"On space walk day, you start off with an exercise period on a stationary bicycle while breathing 100% oxygen through a facemask. After that, the task of suiting up begins. You rely on help from an extra crew member who tugs on sleeves, straightens out wrinkles, locks connectors…. It reminds me of a squire in the Middle Ages helping his knight suit up for battle."

"It takes about six hours from the time you start in the morning until you are ready to open the hatch. After all of this preparation, you will not take lightly to a hatch that does not want to open. That’s what happened to us before our spacewalk earlier this year. The hatch dogs were partly released and allowed the hatch to crack open only 3/8th of an inch. A shaft of brilliant sunlight came through the crack, as if teasing us to come out and play."

"Fortunately, experience gained by owning an old pickup truck with cantankerous doors came in handy. With a little jockeying on the handle and some soft-spoken words, the hatch came open and we started our day."

"If we were chasing bad guys, I am afraid they would be well into hyperspace by now."

"In the sci-fi movies, astronauts can quickly do their spacesuits and in short order, be out the door into the vacuum of space. They’re always in a hurry to chase bad guys, alien monsters, or look for holes in the hull spewing out precious atmosphere," ISS science officer Don Pettit.

NASA and other organizations have developed a sophisticated weather monitoring device.
This NASA Global Climate Model (GCM) is used to see how Earth's climate is changing.
A GCM calculates many things, such as how much sunlight is reflected and absorbed by Earth's atmosphere, the temperature of the air and oceans, the distribution of clouds, rainfall, and snow, and what may happen to the polar ice caps in the future.

2003 Bristol Onion Sellers

2003 Bristol Onion Sellers

When it comes to vegetables, no one knows their onions like the folk from Brittany. And nothing, many would add, can beat the taste of a real Breton onion. So if you want to buy some you're in luck, because Fancois Seite the third generation of so called "Johnny Onions" is back in Clifton selling his famous wares from the handle-bars of his old French bike.

Before the Second World War up to 1,500 cycling onion sellers could be found up and down the country - even as far as Orkney and Shetland - loaded down with strings of the pungent red bulbs called Lard de Roscoff.

The Johnnies had been coming over here from Britanny since 1828, landing at Plymouth and then making their way inland between July and December, peddling their wares as they went.

For many decades they were the only Frenchmen that the average Briton ever met and their Breton beret and stripped jumper soon became a stereotype for the French race.

They would sleep in rented barns, string their onions and then walk or cycle around the country selling them to busy housewives. The British called them Johnny for "little Jean" and the name stuck.

The tradition dwindled as competition increased in the 1950s but there are still about 20 farmers in the Roscoff area who are prepared to travel to Britain to sell their onions.

The president of the Onion Johnnies Association (no, its not a joke) Pascal Creach said: "The British recognise the quality of our pink onion. We are much less known in France."

In fact most French people are flummoxed or amused by the British idea of the cycling Frenchman and his onions, and Roscoff farmers have no real place in the French psyche.

Now, however, they have their own ?120,000 museum at Roscoff devoted to its history and events such as bike races with a full load of onions - and onion soup suppers have already taken place this summer.

Pascal had this to say. "We haven't used the Johnnies image properly, so it is time we did to sell ourselves".

The onion sellers were always the poorest sort of the farm workers but now they are being pushed to the forefront with pride. The Mayor even plans to create a Brotherhood of Onion Johnnies!

One of the last of the cycling Johnnies is Francios Seite, who is now 63 years old.

His family have been bringing their onions to Bristol for three generations.

It started with Eugene, who was the onion seller to people in the Clifton and Westbury-on-Trym area where he built up a trade and many friendships over the years.

He died in 1989 but his son Guillaume, although well into his 80s, carried on the tradition.

He had been coming to the area with his father since he was just 12 years old and brought his son Francios with him in turn.

He comes back to Britain twice a year for short trips, now driving a van but keeping his bicycle in the back to keep up appearances.

After 50 years of selling onions around Bristol he is enthusiastic about the revival of the Johnnies.

"It's old times coming back, just before the tradition dies for good," he says in his excellent English but with a slight West Country accent.

The story told in the museum at Roscoff is of canny Breton Henri Olivier, who in 1828, charted a sailing barge, loaded it with vegetables, including those famous onions, and sailed for England.

He returned home with an empty barge but with pockets full of money.

Obviously this was the market to go for and the Frenchmen kept on coming.

The 1930s were the onion men's golden age. Teams of up to 50 worked together under the leadership of a master seller. Each team had to swear to behave, and not to fight or get drunk.

Then onions were tied together in strings with rushes. There was a skill to it and the best binders could make the strings look attractive, symmetrical and solid - but without using too many onions.

The sellers travelled cheaply in the holds of cargo ships, sleeping on their onion sacks.

They didn't actually get paid until they returned home, but skffied binders got tobacco and two pints of beer a day as well as then- wages.

Once in England they lived like tramps.

They stayed anywhere they could find, such as barns, sheds and derelict houses.

At first the onions were carried on sticks over their shoulders, then came bikes, which could carry up to 100 kilos and finally cars and vans.

It could he harsh and miserable for the sellers in the old days. There were tales of Breton children bursting into tears on demand if any housewife should refuse their wares.

They had one phrase that they used constantly: "Want you onions, Missus?" but it got them by. . Unlike tinkers or gipsies they were welcomed with affection by the people in the towns and villages they visited.

Let's hope the tradition continues. It's one of the things that brings a bit of colour into our lives and we can all do with some of that.

Do you remember the "French Onion Sellers" on their push bikes going around the hou

[Canon SX130 ISO80 28mm effective F5.6 -1eV ~1/160s handheld > Gimp]

"full wide-angle" as I sat on my bike in the parking-lot

So tell me: would you pay $2500 for the camera and lens that took this shot?

It's certainly not perfect, there's a hint of chroma noise and the shadows are a bit pale, the jpegs are coming out well-sharpened but not overly-so, and the shadows show a bit of NR, the dynamic-range is not that great, like any real p&s it has to be knocked-down a bit for good overall DR. And the lens is only F3.6 wide-open at wide-angle. And the zoom and AF while slow are not overly-so. I shot it comfortably with no complaints.

But for $200 retail?
I don't even care that it's 12MP, that's just a bonus.
I see nothing really obviously, blatantly wrong with these images.
And this camera was half as much as my G9 brand-new in the same store.
I paid more than this for my A610IS and got less out of it.

Yes this is just ISO80 but if this is what it will do at ISO80 I would be very happy with it. I suspect that it has trouble shooting in low light as the image-processing chip seems to want to fiddle around too much but that's a small bridge way down the road. The main thing is that I can ride around with it in my jacket pocket easily and take quite-decent shots with it. Easily. Without it costing me a lot of money. For a "casual" shot where I really don't care all that much about the IQ, this is just fine. It's not great but it's not bad either. And most of all it isn't hobbled by a lens that is too dull, full of distortion (not in jpeg at least), too slow (not with IS), too short or too long.

And have I mentioned that it was only $200 brand-new in Walmart?
Honestly I got sick of watching eBay and trying to get this camera for under $100, at least under $150. I just said fuck it and went out and bought it. It was either that or wait months, maybe years, for it to come down to around $100 on eBay. And for what?

How could I know if it was worth waiting for if I'd never shot it myself?
And is it really worth waiting months, maybe a year, for a camera to drop 25% even 50% in price when it only costs $200 to start with? Not really. You're still spending $100 on it vs $200. Big deal. We're not talking about a filter here, something where $100 is outrageous and $200 is ridiculous, we're talking about the whole camera, and you're going to pay at least $100+ for any decent digital camera in good shape for a reputable supplier. Much less a brand new one retail with a 15-day "no questions asked, no restocking fee" return policy. And it doesn't blow-out highlights as bad as the A610, it doesn't have the fine-detail problems that the A710 had, and so far the only thing that makes me wistful for the Coolpix 9100 is the in-camera HDR. If I had gotten it for say $150 on eBay that would have been half the cost of a Coolpix 9100 but I would have lost the return option. I took it at $200 brand-new with a return option and ran. I will eat that 33% penalty no problem if after 15 days I want to keep the camera in the first place. Especially knowing that they are selling for $150 on eBay, it's not like buying a $1200 DSLR retail when I could only get $600 for it on eBay.

A DSLR just has completely-different economics: you're rationalizing the cost of an outrageously-expensive new camera for the slight improvement in IQ and control that it provides relative to film or a good point & shoot. When you go the other way the economic benefits just leap out at you. Go ahead: compare this to what you'd get out of a GH1 and a 14-140IS, or even a D90 and an 18-200VR. Don't even think about the price. Just look at the IQ. Spend an hour analyzing the IQ to death. Then realize that even if you bill at $100/hr you could spend 6 or 7 more hours analyzing this and still not equal the cost of either of those other two rigs over this little p&s. I just don't need 12 stops of DR, 38dB of SNR, 14 bits per color-channel and 22 bits of overall color-resolution or even SX130-level IQ at ISO6400 to produce decent shots. And I'll bet that you don't either. I'll be the first to admit that having that level of performance makes it real easy to produce good work. But I'm not going to sell my soul for something I don't need especially when it provides little if any real benefit on most of the shots that I take and when I'm not shooting it is literally a pain in the ass to deal with. I love DSLRs, don't get me wrong, but I'm not paying $2k for a camera that's going to sit on a shelf most of the time and when I do carry it, it's an extra 3 pounds of weight and it has to go in a bag. I did that once, I'm not doing it again. Especially not when I have 5 other cameras that I like to shoot, which altogether cost me $350. Including this one. And they *all* can produce good shots like this. Just not at 1/1500s F11 ISO3200.

But you don't need anything *like* that level of performance to take this shot well handhe
