Materials used: Page from 1901 schoolbook, scrapbooking paper, images from Astrology book, Moon image from Dover clipart used on iron on t-shirt transfer, butterfly wing acrylic stamps, marker, colored pencil, sewing pattern, and some rub on ribbon stuff. Whew, I think that's it. Somewhere along the way I forgot that less is more. And what's with all the orange? I don't think I even like orange that much. This is my third recent collage with orange - no one gets to see number one unless it miraculously gets good. Bench Diary - 6/11/2009 Santa Cruz, CA (6/11/2009) - Continuing to work on the Beadwork Magazine challenge. As you can see, the pattern inspiration is at the top right--a greeting card from Paper Vision in downtown Santa Cruz. The platform for beading consists of two layers of medium weight fusible pellon (I come from a sewing background), a layer of cotton (the horizonal-striped fabric), and a layer of t-shirt transfer. Adding the T-shirt transfer was an experiment to see how it would affect the piece as I worked on it and the finished product. Looking back, it seems it was unnecessary so I probably will not do it in the future unless I'm actually using the pattern from the T-shirt transfer as a guide for the beadwork. Me & My Uncle Father's Day 1956. Age 22 months. June 17, 1956. Last year, my uncle gave me a box of old photos. Most had pictures of people I couldn't identify. This one had a caption on the back. It was taken on Father's Day 1956 when I was 22 months old. Me and my uncle went ridin' down, South Colorado, West Texas bound. We stopped over in Santa Fe, That bein' the point just about half way, And you know it was the hottest part of the day. I took the horses up to the stall, Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all. Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt, Indian summer, I took off my shirt, And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt. West Texas cowboys, they's all around, With liquor and money, they're loaded down. The owners of this t-shirt were a young British couple who'd come to Iran for a two week visit. I coincidently met up with them at Cafe 78 after the Poster Biannual. Shortly after they left to visit Isfahan and Shiraz and upon their return I met up with them and friends to spend their last day traveling the classier spots of Tehran. It was great to spend some time with folk of similar background and to discuss about our current locations. They mentioned that they'd read many blogs about Iran and I asked if they'd read mine - to my surprise/embarrassment they had done. It's weird meeting people who could know so much personal information about yourself. It was also strange to hear how much they love the country and that they are considering moving here. Their knowledge both current and historical was impressive so I'm sure the idea is not ill advised. Diagnosis After I returned from Viet-Nam, I received my orders for a second tour of duty at The Naval Schools of Photography. It wasn’t long before I realized that I was different. I didn’t fit in, or feel comfortable around the photo school like before. I cried a lot when I was alone. I went to sick bay looking for help. I was admitted into the Mental Ward, and locked in with addicts, and alcoholics. The doors were locked at all times. Hallucinations, to these doctors, meant only one thing, drugs. It was 1970. It was too soon for Vietnam Vets to be coming in. The first of us were coming on the scene, but there was no medical clarification or diagnosis to cover what we were suffering from. Along with flashbacks, I suffered from positive hallucinations, and occasionally negative hallucinations. In the first, you see people “who aren’t there.” In the latter, you don’t see people “who are there.” After a couple of weeks, Pensacola decided I needed more care than they were equipped to handle. One of the male nurses on my ward came in and told me I was being transferred to the Naval Hospital, Philadelphia and the plane would leave at 0930. I began packing a few things from my locker. When that was done, I put on my chief’s uniform, buffed my shoes to get the dust off, and sat down to read a magazine. I didn’t get to the magazine. The nurse saw me and hurriedly made his was to my bunk. “You are no Chief in here, Jaynes,” he told me. “Like hell I’m not. I was appointed by the President of the United States.” He called in two more male nurses. Are you going to change, or do we have to change you?” I stood there, finally realizing I didn’t stand a chance, and put on the blue pajamas. Then a doctor, whom I’d never seen before, came back to my bunk. “I need to give you a shot right quick, Jaynes,” he said. “Turn around and drop your pants.” The shot only took a second. “We’ll be leaving in just a few minutes,” he told me. The shot kicked in and I barely remember getting in the airplane. Truth is, it was a Medical Flight. I didn’t know there was such a thing. The shot was in full control now. My mouth went dry and my eyesight blurred. I was lying in the middle bunk. There was one above and one below me. A nurse pulled straps across my body and cinched them tight to the bunk. My next memory is on a gurney in a hallway, still restrained. I wasn’t alone. There were many more gurneys with people on them. There were some who just walked all the time, talking to themselves. A few of them stopped to talk. I met God there. And if that wasn’t enough, I also met His Son. They wore blue pajamas same as mine. I don’t know how long I lay there, but a huge burly guy wheeled me into a room, removed the restraints, stood me to my feet, and left. I walked over to the door and pulled on it. It was locked. The walls were soft, padded. No windows, except a tiny little square in the door. “Somebody!” I yelled. Nothing. “Somebody let me out of here!” Nothing. It was no use. They weren’t going to let me out. I went to sleep on the floor leaning against the door, in case someone opened it, I would know it. Very early the next morning they came for me, and 'Hey, they let me walk to the plane this time, barefooted and cold." "Damn, it’s still dark out here.” An aid took me to my bunk and assisted me in getting up there. I thanked him. First polite gesture I’m seen since I left the photo school in Pensacola. It was only a couple of minutes before a nurse came over, a real woman-type nurse. She sort of grunted at me, but didn’t really speak. She wrote something on a little tag with a string on it, and pinned it to my pajama shirt. When she walked away, I tucked my chin down as far as I could so I could read it. I wanted to try it on without worrying about stretching the neckline (and for me, this step is easier while the garment is still flat). Anyway, it was very apparent that the shoulder and armhole needed to be narrowed a bit. I marked the sliver of fabric I removed so that I could accurately transfer the info to the pattern pieces. I also flattened the cap of the sleeve pattern piece just a bit, as a high sleeve cap generally doesn't fit me well. What's the story? Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Businesses close their doors and everyone goes skating. According to Richard van Ammerzoden, a skater from Rotterdam, skating in Holland originated as a poor man's sport. Isolated by mud and water in the damp winters, rural farmers prayed for ice. When it came, just like Hans Brinker, they strapped on their wooden skates with leather thongs, and traveled great distances to visit friends and relatives they hadn't seen in months. Then they skated home. Perhaps that explains the origin of the Elfstedentocht or "Eleven Cities Tour", a 200-kilometer mega-tour in the province of Friesland known as "the mother of all skating tours." In the 1890s, some Frisian farmer with well-developed leg muscles tried to skate through all eleven cities of Friesland in a single day. He succeeded, and the rest is history. I did skate a tour from Amsterdam - Ransdorp - Holysloot - Uitdam - Zuiderwoude to Monnickendam and back - about 40km. This photo I took on my way home to Amsterdam. Toen hadden ze nog geen ijzer uit gevonden dus deden ze dat met botten van geslachte of dode dieren. De schaats is ook in Nederland uitgevonden. Ook in Noorwegen schaatsen veel mensen maar lang niet zoveel als in Nederland. Er ligt daar meestal te veel sneeuw op het ijs. Als er twee nachten matige vorst is geweest slaat de gekte weer toe. Erwtensoep in de pot, schaatsen uit het vet en tochten maken. Helaas heeft het al jaren niet meer gevroren, weet een hele generatie niet wat natuurijs maar nu lijkt eindelijk de weer een vorst periode aan te breken waar op natuurijs geschaatst kan worden. Dit betekende oorspronkelijk gewoon 'water' en heeft zijn oorsprong in het Oudgermaanse aha of ahwo (ook verwant met het Latijnse aqua en tevens terug te vinden in het Deense en Zweedse A.) In het Nederlands is Aa door betekenisverenging meer specifiek een naam voor rivieren en is het weer lokaal verder verbasterd tot Ee, Ie of IJ. Soms is het aan de naam voorafgaande lidwoord de geassimileerd met ie en wordt zo Die. Zoals even verderop hier de Holysloter Die en de Ransdorper Die. March 17 Happy St. Patrick's Day! As an Irish girl it has always been one of my favorite holidays. I started the day off by meeting my friend Alex for brunch at a bagel and sandwich cafe called Zi Pani. I immediately asked Alex where his green was and he thought I was talking about money. When he realized I meant green clothing he said, "Oh, today is Wednesday." I love Alex. He even paid for my food which was so sweet. It was a nice day so we sat outside and ate, chatting for about an hour before I told him I better start my job hunt. My goal for Spring Break is to apply to places around Frederick where I can work this summer. I went to two golf courses and Ceresville Mansion where a lot of weddings and fancy events are held. Hopefully I will hear back from someone! After putting in all the applications I hung out at the rink with my mom for a bit and when she was done working I drove to the Greene Turtle for dinner. I let her wear my St. Patty's Day Capitals shirt today since she didn't have anything good to wear. We had a nice dinner and afterwards went to my aunt and cousin's house to watch a hockey game. We didn't have the right channel at home so they let us come over and watch on their TV even though they had other things to do. (16) Robby He was eating dinner at the counter of the old Sitton's North Hollywood Diner on Magnolia in North Hollywood. I was there with my wife, Leslie, and my always beamish and delightful son, Joshua Zollo, who had a hot dog, french fries, a chocolate milk shake and for dessert, cherry pie. An essential and iconic American meal it was, and heaven for a little kid. I had a tuna-melt, which, while certainly not healthy at all, was delicious. I saw Robby from a distance - he had this great long straggly hair, and was wearing an earthen brown sweater vest over a white shirt with a red paisley tie, oddly formal for an Angeleno diner. He was watching the other patrons, the waitresses and the prize-fight being broadcast on the little color TV over the counter. Though my wife doesn't like it when I interrupt our familial functions to take somebody's photo, I couldn't resist - and with my son's encouragement - he always welcomes my photographic proclivities - I went over to Robby, discovered he had great green eyes, and asked if I could take his photo. He smiled at me with a bewildered smile, but rather than ask me what my purpose was, as people often do, he simply allowed me to take his picture. Wanting to know more about him, as is my way, I asked him, if he was a writer. I didn't think he was, but asking anybody if they are a writer, actor, model or musician in L.A. is always a good way to break the proverbial ice, and is often answered in the affirmative. Robby said no, he wasn't a writer. He said he worked at the St. Paul's Church, which is on Magnolia, not far from this restaurant. He didn't expand into details of what he did in the church, and whether it was even a paying job, or if, perhaps, he considered prayer and confession a form of work. I know for some it is. He didn't have much more to say, but he kept smiling at me warmly, and somewhat curiously, as if waiting for what was to happen next. But I had a family sitting in a naugahyde booth to return to, so I thanked him, and he thanked me in return, and kept smiling at me and staring, and as I tasted Joshie's milkshake, I saw Robby ever so slowly creep towards the cash register, where he paid his check, and then almost hypnotically he sluggishly sloped towards the door to leave. Before making his exit, however, he stopped to wave at us with a flourish, and I waved back, as did Joshua. And then Robby stepped out into the evening sunlight, still bright in this Junetime even at 6:45, and he stopped outside of the window, fixed his glance on us, and then waved again before walking off down Magnolia. Ringo Pie - Ayumi's Postal Block Ayumi requested postal themed blocks for her month of Ringo Pie, which is an amazingly fun and stressful patchwork bee. After struggling with a postal scale, I adjusted my plans and went with an "airmail" theme. particularly poignant as the gals in this bee are quite geographically diverse. This block came together a bit more disjointed than I envisioned it, so I wouldn't be offended at all, if you disassemble it and use just the bits you like separately. The envelope was my favourite bit and when the seam allowance is taken in on the other two sides, I think it will look much better. Ayumi, when you are ready with a new address, I can send this. I'm also going to include some of the stamp fabric that I bought and hadn't used. You may need it for "filler" in your quilt. The smaller nylon loop will lie flat after few days of wear. See "sun" around collar. Fabric paints are usually pretty pliable, except when you layer a ton of paint, like I did on this piece. The collar area was a bit stiff. Moody Blues vintage 'Poster' brown Tie Dye t-shirt (X-Large) Moody Blues Tie Dye t-shirt is printed wih the band in a vintage 'Poster' design. The 3-member band is featured inside a framed circle, dressed in a vintage motif. The Moody Blues are an English rock band formed in England in 1964. Among their innovations was a fusion with classical music, most notably in their 1967 album 'Days of Future Passed.' They have sold in excess of 50 million albums worldwide and have been awarded 14 platinum and gold discs. As of 2010 they remain active. The 'Poster' 3-member band image looks incredible on the brown/brown tie-dye in vintage circle design. Welsh singer Tom Jones (1940) is particularly noted for his powerful voice. Since the mid 1960’s, this ‘vocal powerhouse’ has sold over 100 million records. Many of his songs can be heard on film soundtracks, and he also regularly appeared as a singer and an actor in films and TV-series. In his time Tom Jones has tried his hand at styles including pop, rock, R&B, country, big band, dance, techno, gospel and jazz, and he's still going strong today. Tom Jones was born Thomas John Woodward in Pontypridd, South Wales, in 1940. His parents were Freda Jones and Thomas Woodward, a coal miner. Jones began singing at an early age: he'd regularly perform at family gatherings, weddings and his mother's Women's Guild meetings. At 16, he left school. He married his high school girlfriend, Linda Trenchard the following year, one month before their son Mark was born. To support his young family, Jones took a job working in a glove factory and was later employed in construction. At night, he sang in pubs. Jones' bluesy singing style developed out of the sound of American soul music. His early influences included blues and R & B greats like Little Richard, Solomon Burke, and Jackie Wilson. Jones became the front man for Tommy Scott and the Senators, a Welsh beat group, in 1963. They soon gained a local following and reputation in South Wales. Gordon Mills, a performer who had branched out into songwriting and management went to see him. He became his manager and contrived the stage name, Tom Jones, which not only linked the singer to the image of the title character in Tony Richardson's hit film Tom Jones (1963) starring Albert Finney, but also emphasised Jones' Welsh nationality. Many record companies found Jones' stage presence, act, and vocal delivery too raucous and raunchy. Eventually, Mills got Jones a recording contract with Decca. His first single, Chills and Fever, was released in late 1964. It didn't chart, but the follow-up, It's Not Unusual became an international hit. The BBC initially refused to play it, but the offshore pirate radio station Radio Caroline promoted it. The heavily orchestrated pop arrangement perfectly meshed with Jones' swinging, sexy image, and in early 1965, It's Not Unusual reached number one in the United Kingdom and the top ten in the United States. During 1965, Mills secured a number of film themes for Tom Jones to record, including the themes for the comedy What's New Pussycat? (1965, Clive Donner, Richard Talmadge), written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and for the James Bond film Thunderball (1965, Terence Young) starring Sean Connery. Jones was also awarded the Grammy Award for Best New Artist for 1965. In 1966, Jones' popularity began to slip somewhat, causing Mills to redesign the singer's image into a more respectable and mature crooner. Jones also began to sing material that appealed to a wider audience, such as the big country hit Green, Green Grass of Home. The strategy worked and Jones returned to the top of the charts in the UK and began hitting the Top 40 again in the USA. For the remainder of the decade, he scored a consistent string of hits on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1967, Jones performed for the first time in Las Vegas at the Flamingo. His charismatic performances and style of dress (increasingly featuring his open half unbuttoned shirts and tight pants) became part of his stage act. Women would swoon and scream, and some would throw their knickers on stage. Soon after he began to play Las Vegas, he chose to record less, instead concentrating on his lucrative club performances. However, one of Tom's best-loved singles was released in 1968. Delilah was a dark tale of murder and infidelity, but people were entranced by the melody and Jones' unforgettable delivery. It became a big hit. Jones had an internationally successful television variety show from 1969 to 1971, titled This Is Tom Jones. The show, which was worth a reported $9m to Jones over three years, was broadcast by ITV in the UK and by ABC in America. From 1980 to 1981, he had a second television variety show, The Tom Jones Show, which lasted for a series of 24 episodes. In the early 1970’s, Tom Jones had a number of hit singles, including She's A Lady, Till, and The Young New Mexican Puppeteer, but in the mid 1970’s his popularity declined, although he did have a big hit in 1976 with Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow, which went to #1 on the US country chart and #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. He also appeared in such TV films as Showdown at O.K. Corral (1972, Nicholas Webster) and Pleasure Cove (1979, Bruce Bilson). In 1974, Tom finally moved to America, buying the mansion formerly belonging to Dean Martin in Los Angeles' Bel Air. In the early 1980’s, Jones started to record country music. From 1980 to 1986, Jones had nine songs hit the top 40 on the US country chart, yet he failed to crack the top 100 in the UK or chart on the Bi Wardrobe 1/365 I've been rubbish at this so far, but I'm going to try harder, honest! She whipped out her map and set them in the right direction in no time. They were so grateful they gave us two tickets to the show so we didn't have to scramble to find a place to sit. Very nice of them. I love how the guy on the right has Magellan embroidered on his shirt and he doesn't have a clue where he is. But my favorite thing is how he is totally staring at Belinda's chest.
