Bicycle Treadmill

I take Dr. Smith's fixie for a spin on my dad's Cortina rollers. The two rear rollers are driven by the bike, and are connected by a belt to the front roller, which drives the front wheel of the bike. You want the front wheel to spin because the gyroscopic effects (allegedly) allow you to stay upright without support. Fancier models have another belt that attaches to a fan which increases resistance and provides a life-like breeze. I'm told that in some places, more than one set of rollers are connected to a mechanical clock and people can race. A few weeks on these, and your balance is wicked good, something you don't get from a stationary bike or "trainers." Note: it was slightly scary. (Info on bike: Gitane frame, 42x21 gearing, retains vestigial 52 tooth chainring.)

Short Shorts Scandinavian Pride Ride 6.24.2009

Short Shorts meet Yoga at Piccolo Park.

Only in Portland during Pedalpalooza could you lead and event called the Short Shorts Scandinavian Pride Ride and over 100 participants will show up!

The pre-ride picnic in Piccolo Park in SE Portland brought around 20. What a feast of open sandwiches with a choice of cheeses included Brunost, the Norwegian brown cheese and IKEA pickled herring and salmon. Also homemade sour cherry jam (Deena!), lingon berry jam, and Lefse! Dan Miller picked up some on his trip to Minnesota, and I don’t know of anything tastier!

As more short shorts arrived, I ushered them to the flag making station with paper and crayons and also Elly was taking portraits in the park. At one point the Yoga by Bike Ride converged in the park. But there wasn’t much intermingling. Soon the tiny park was a sea of short shorts and homemade flags on bikes, ready to parade around town. I asked if there were any native Scandinavians, but we were all Americanized or a Swede for the day. Thanks to Shawn G for bringing a portable ‘bull horn’ so people could have slightly more of a clue of what was going on.

The bike route was done “Viking Style.” At the start, Carl Larson –the original inspiration for the ride* – treated us all to an extended Ladd’s Addition alleyway ride. Through out the entire night we yelled out “Who’s got Short Shorts! We’ve got Short Shorts! We then rode over the Hawthorne bridge to Keller Fountain for a short break, a few folks got in the water, and why not, as we were wearing short shorts.

Then we biked through downtown to the Pearl for another fountain visit at Jamison Square and a group photo. Though the funny thing is as we all got up and posed, I realized our photographers had left the ride. Luckily Tom and couple others stepped in. We headed back eastside, but this time we did it crazy Scandinavian style. We bike over the top of Steel Bridge! On the road! And lastly the ride ended at Norse Hall, where the ladies generously opened up the Oslo Lounge – Horny Troll Bar just for us. And boy were they pleased with our group – now at about 50! Many a drink was poured including the house special, the Horny Troll (orange juice and Akvavit ). The ladies knew I was in charge of this crew and poured strong, and soon I was taking lots of blurry short short pictures. Wow, is it only Thursday?

A view from a war Transport report into street layouts. A view of one of the many 'back to back' housing streets typified by Coronation St and that would, often quite rightly, be condemned as slums and cleared in the post-war period. Bad as they often were some of the housing that replaced these streets hasn't weathered well - and has now been, in turn, demolished. Some of these terraces that were 'renovated' have at times kept some sense of community - but we forget how basic these houses were. In the background is what I think is an air-raid shelter.

The 'play street' road sign is of interest as well as the 'players'. "Ring a ring of roses" looks to be being played - boys and girls - and that lad on that trike - classic. Real social history.

This year i wanted to do something a little different to capture the night of the ball and after having to scrap my original idea decided to use my focus as my main focal point.

What an incredible weekend. We were fortunate enough to go to Budds Creek, MD for the 2009 Pro National Motorcross Championship. That place is "Amazing". When I got inside the venue, I just stood and looked around and couldn't believe how beautiful it was. Large, very tall pines lined the paths making it look like a national park, even the dirt was gorgeous. We had just had a deluge of rain over night and you would never have known it. Another thing that struck me right away was how this place was designed to be 100% fan friendly. I just can't over state that fact. I could get to any part of the track I wanted even in the middle of the most heated race. They had designed the mountains, jumps, twists and turns with large pipes running right under the track it self so you could walk thru them to any vantage point you liked, incredible. If you ever get a chance to go, don’t miss it. We were so blessed with amazing weather until about 15 minutes before the race went “live” on NBC. Even then it only drizzled adding another dimension to the incredible day. I hope you enjoy the new set and please bear with me as I upload shots to it. I’m going thru them now and can you believe I took a lot;) Ben.

The Blessing of the Bikes is an annual event held each May in Anchorage, Alaska. I lot of rough and tumble Alaskan bikers bring their bikes to town to get a blessing for a safe and fun riding season. The 2010 Blessing took place on an absolutely freezing, gray, blah day - we cut it short and make for the closest coffee shop to warm up. Hopefully we'll have better luck next year!

Hotel Harrington

Washington, D.C. We were very lucky to find this place just one block from the National Mall and three blocks from the White House. We stayed 3 nights, paying 139 bucks per night for a room with two beds, including taxes and parking. Until the end I wondered, what the catch would be, but there wasn't any. The room was nice, not even too noisy from the street traffic (we were on the 9th floor, I think). Internet was also included, but it worked only in the lobby and wasn't very fast. We found it by stopping at the Maryland Welcome Center on Rt 15 right after the PA-MD border. They have these free brochures with discount accomodation ads. These are a great tip for all budget travelers, I think. This place had an ad in there and turned out to be great value for money. Similarly, we found a good affordable place in downtown Philly a few days later.

Torrot Folding Bike

Not bad for a fiver! Found this bike at the tip was pretty rusty but i've work on it over the weekend and i think she's looking pretty good. I've replaced the brake pads, rubbed a fair bit of the rust away, painted the rack and front mudgard.
All i know about the Torrot Bike is they are Spanish. I would guess this model comes from the 70's or 80's but if anyone knows any more about these bikes i would love to learn more about them.

Brian and Sisco SOLD!

6-25-06... This is Sisco. He is a 9 year old 1/2 foxtrotter 1/2 arabian. He is broke to ride and is very gentle. I have put numerous beginners on him. He has mainly been used for trailriding. We have taken him to Blue and Grey and Clinton Lake trails. Both places always had very beginner riders. We have 4 wheelin trails down the street from our pasture and have to ride a short distance on a neighborhood street. He does that fine and is fine with the 4-wheelers and dirt bikes going by. He is my mother's horse and she is only 5'0. He is 15.1hh. Not that tall but too tall for my mom. He can be kinda squirmy on the ground when it comes to "scarey" things. Nothing too bad though. He neckneins very nicely and backsup quickly. He can do rollbacks and is sensitive to leg cues. He stands for bathing, flyspraying, feet trimmed, (never had shoes on before) saddling, and loads into trailers nicely. 4/1/08 I loaded him in a 2 horse to see if he would and he did with a little coaxing. He may be sold, I am holding him till Sunday 4/6/08. He is for sale for $1200 (neg)

Campsite #2. We rode into Templeton, CA and couldn't find any place to stay. So we rode for a few more miles and found a dirt/gravel road that had two mailboxes at the start of it. This told us there were two houses up there. So we rode up it a bit and then Cheryl knocked on the door and asked the lady that answered if it would be okay if we camped on their land for the night because we couldn't find any place to stay. She was cool with it! Then two guys came out of the house in this picture and told us we could use the shower they had in the trailer behind their house. They were super nice guys and even came and talked to us in the morning before we left.
